- Welcome to the first vlog style video with voice over on the channel! Today, we race train against plane to see which is fastest between London and Edinburgh, the capital cities of England and Scotland respectively!
By the way, if you have any pointers as to how to improve on the video (as it really felt like editing my first video all over again!) or there was something you really liked, then I would greatly appreciate it if you left a comment.

There’s a reason LNER’s slogan is “Edinburgh to ACTUAL London in 4 hours and 20 minutes”. I’ve travelled between the two cities many times and can confidently say I am Team Train. You don’t have to arrive an hour and a half before, no security or restrictions on what you can pack (I got a glass nail file confiscated at the airport once - oops), it’s more spacious, I can settle down with a book or have a nap or just enjoy the scenery. The LNER buffet bar has more choices than airline snack trollies, the toilets are nicer, and you step off right in the centre of London, rather than having to get an express train from Heathrow, Stansted, Gatwick or Luton.
You dont have to arrive that early before a flight. As long as you check in online and you only have hand luggage, you only have to give yourself enough time to get through security before your gate closes. Before lockdown I regularly travelled to Paris and Amsterdam and always got to Birmingham Airport 50 mins before flight departed.

Hahaha, pure facts man. A late arrival/departure will get you fired or suspended without pay for at least a month in Japan, a possible warning/talking to in the UK if it happens often enough, and nothing at all in the US.

@@Noam-Bahar Then there's the US' Trolleybuses, a bus running on light rail/streetcar catenary that cannot leave it or else it wouldn't work. I'd almost like to punch the guy who invented it haha
@@Noam-Bahar That all is true. Though I too would strongly prefer the rail vehicles instead as it's not only an insult to the versatility and use of buses, but it also is just a clown train dressed as a bus. Might as well just use the real deal, the rail, instead, you know? No logic to trolleybuses at all. You either make a rail line out of it, or you just use actual buses.
If you want a set of transit lines that are stuck on their own proprietary corridors, you want a train. If you'd like to have a adaptable, versatile, go-nearly-anywhere form of transit, you use buses. It's that simple.
It's the one major reason I actually dislike trains as a mode of transit. If something happens on the line(s), it screws the entire system up and over until whatever it is is removed or resolved. It cannot detour, or continue. It is stuck. Screwed. I'm not against rail at all however, I'd adore having some of that quality frequent service and all over European high-speed intercity and international rail services here in the US. Just... be smart, and separate it from grade, to it's own proprietary track-ways, rather than allowing any grade crossings at all unless absolutely necessary, like when coming into a station that cannot be elevated nor underground.
It also is one of the countless reasons to me, buses are by far the best, most practical, fun and efficient modes of transit out there. Specifically in the form of true BRT service - the entirety of all lines using exclusive lanes or roadways made for them only, priority at signals, and the systems on all buses that automatically take pictures and generate reports to local police of violating motorists using or parking in the lanes. The buses 90% of the time can get out of jams, backups, and make detours/reroute around and by anything that slows them down or blocks their paths in order to keep up with the schedule, and get right back on their usual routes. Something trains again, have no ability to do at all.
The fit the USA airlines would have if you fined them for being late!
Adding a small suitcase that needs to be checked on the plane would already have slowed the trip down by 20 minutes.
The higher comfort and the cheaper price would make me chose the train almost any time on trips within Europe.
Living in Northwest London, we have the odd situation that it's simpler to get to Gatwick by public transport via Thameslink than it is to get to Heathrow plus you get the added benefit on Thameslink of changing at Blackfriars and getting the best view there is of London and the River Thames while waiting for the connection.
Isn't getting a plane to Edinburgh cheaper a lot of the time?
I've usually found the plane is cheaper than train and city airport is often better for Edinburgh
@@jacksimmers1016 yes, but only if you fly from more distant airports such as Luton with its much less convenient connections, and are prepared to compromise on departure time. So if you have a railcard the train can be both quicker and no more expensive than a flight from Luton if you include the full travel time and cost. I'm often taking camping equipment which means that I can't fly unless I buy my fuel at the destination and pay extra for luggage.
Not forgetting there is a faster train that only stops at Newcastle and as Adrian rightfully says 20 minutes if you want a suitcase and then waiting to collect during arrival. All said isn't the train a little more civilized.
This comment will get lost I'm sure, but I regularly traveled London to Edinburgh to see family for a large chunk of my life.
While the trains are not always on time, the last few times I have flown to Edinburgh from Heathrow (last being in 2019) were an absolute nightmare. Every single time the flight was delayed both on the way to Edinburgh and and from Edinburgh - and upon arriving back in to London, we were stuck on the plane for an hour because we had been placed in international arrivals and had to wait for them to procure a bus to take us to the right part of the airport.
Even if the train were significantly slower centre to centre, I would still take it as in my experience it is a far more pleasant and reliable way to travel. Plus it is more ecologically friendly - so it's a double win in my books.

I liked this format. The plane trip cost over twice as much too. Wish we had the choice of taking a train to more cities in the US.

@TheRenaissanceman65 unless you live in either of the coasts that are comparable to size and density. There a train would make sense. Like the Acela if it was made good and fast.
Also if he had taken the tube would he would make the trip in a little more time but a lot cheaper like you said.
@aviagamer None taken. I'm a New Yorker, which is like the only decent place to live in the US and it's still not great compared to basically anywhere in Western Europe.
@TheRenaissanceman65 There are tons of densely populated corridors in the US for real. The Northeast Corridor from Boston to DC, the Southeast Corridor from DC to Miami, the Texas Triangle, the North-Midwest with all the rust belt cities around Chicago, California, and Cascadia. The only places that aren't really suitable for HSR are the Great Plains, the Rockies, and the Southwest.

Great video, train is the most relaxing. We did something similar 15 years ago in Germany. There were 4 of us on a business trip to Frankfurt, the next day we had to go to Munich. 2 went by plane, we jumped on a high speed train and travelled 1st class and 2 Germans jumped in a Mercedes and belted down the Autobahn. We got to Munich Bahnhof first and we got picked up 20 minutes later by the Mercedes. After another half hour the plane travellers arrived at the office by taxi from the airport. We had a really nice journey, very relaxing, had lunch etc. The car driver and especially the passenger were totally stressed after clocking up 260kph for most of the journey. The flyers were pissed off at all the hanging around at the airport. Best part of the trip was after doing an afternoon of meetings we all went to Oktoberfest.

It is fun flying on the Autobahn, but it is stressful (if you are doing it right). You have to keep an eye on the horizon, cause if a truck going 80kph enters a passing area 1/2mi ahead and pulls out, you have to hit the brakes NOW. Plus at those speeds a Mercedes is probably only getting 10mpg (at $8/gal).

For this kind of trip, train is the only way to go. Plane is TO MUCH hassel & fuss. Train is more picturesque. Great first voice-over video Dylan!

Same thing for London-Paris, London-Manchester, London-Glasgow, London-Brussels, Paris-Brussels, Paris-Frankfurt, Berlin-Frankfurt etc. Trains take almost the same time for city centre to city centre travel (if you factor in airport formalities like getting there and checking in early, which negates the planes' speed advantage) and yet trains pollute waaaay less

That is really interesting. I was expecting the plane to be a lot quicker, but like you say Dylan, the faff slows it down and it's pretty clear that the train is the better option all round. Yay for the train!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed style of this and was surprised at how close the times were. You need to do some more walking around Edinburgh to build up your stamina!
I really enjoyed this video! As others have said, it's nice to hear the voice behind the words! One thing to consider - if you had had luggage with you, the train would've won hands down. The extra time spent checking in and waiting for your luggage at the end could easily have added an hour to the plane journey.
I was thinking the same. You wait forever to retrieve your suitcase after your flight.

This is a journey I've done plenty of times, both on train and plane. It all depends on circumstances and of course where you start and finish.
I live 20 minutes in a minicab from Heathrow, but over an hour to Kings Cross on train/tube (I wouldn't take a cab into central London) which tips the timing in favour of the airport.
If you have loads of bags, the plane is easier, especially if you take a cab, vs having to use a commuter train and tube. I also have lounge access, which makes the wait at Heathrow more tolerable, depending on time of day of course. Pre-Covid, the lounges early on a Monday morning would be manic, for example.
Plane is also easier with young kids, as they're only locked into their seat for a short period of time.
I'd still rather take the train, but practicality usually tips in favour of the plane, for me at least. Plus it adds to my air miles and status.
BTW, you should take the airport bus into Edinburgh. It's faster than the tram. Bus lanes all down Corstorphine Road. You can also get a normal train to Heathrow from Paddington, which is not much slower but quite a bit cheaper, or at least it was last time I used it. The tube is more direct though and the trains come every few minutes. Depends on when your flight is and how long you're willing to wait.
You also have to factor in the costs. Both train and plane can be astronomical. Sometimes it's one or the other. And advance fares are not always an option.

A lot of the time, when looking at a return fare, I've actually found the plane to be cheaper round trip (Manchester) than a train. Of course that's before factoring in Railcard - that was kind of cheating to use that though when you're also looking at pricing.
And yes, absolutely breaking up the journey is important. Plus I'd rather be in a decent airplane seat with acceptable legroom in the air for an hour than on a poor suspension, poor seat 800 series train for 4 hours+.

@@nanderv You're right, and it's one of the inadequacies of Heathrow. The only trains you can get from there go into London. If you're flying long-haul from somewhere else in the UK, with BA at least, it's far more convenient to take a connecting flight, and it usually doesn't add much to the price. Sometimes it's cheaper.
It's a downside for those of us in West London (and there are plenty of us). Flying is usually more convenient, but we should be taking the train.
@@acciid when i was flying on the route up to edi or gla i was using LCY checkin was swift being last than 30mins. and the DLR got me into the city quite quickly. with 1st class on the train being £250 plus. the plane was quicker and mostly cheaper.
I really like the new narrative format! It frees me from having to read the captions while trying to take in the visuals at the same time. I think that you do a great job with your channel and the voiceover just adds another level of enjoyment. Thanks...

Your voice commentary is perfectly acceptable and must save you a lot of time writing text and extra editing.
This video is so useful to travellers who want to make this trip, and could be used as a reference.
I'd choose the train over the plane any day, not just because I hate flying, but it's more economical and certainly more eco-friendly, and the slightly quicker plane journey doesn't compensate for this.
There are some other factors to consider: 1) Train is less likely to get a delay or cancellation than the plane and also you will never be bumped from a train trip due to overbooking. 2) Train has much more frequent departures than the plane. In that case, one is more likely to find a more convenient departure time. Surely, train is the way to go.
British trains are famous for their unreliability. This video is PR for the rail companies. If you don't believe me ask ten British people who aren't railway enthusiasts, just people trying to get to work, not one will recommend rail in the UK.
Whenever I had business in Germany or in nearby foreign countries, I tried to take the train from Berlin the day before and back in the evening instead of the flight. It is also better for the company if you go to meetings well rested. - Cheers, Heinz

I no longer live in UK, so I thoroughly enjoyed this video, through two ghostly deserted cities. I dare say there will be time differences when the crowds reappear, but I do like the train trip, so thank you very much for doing this comparison.
Hi, this is a great video for foreigners like me who love to travel. First time I traveled from London to Edinburgh I was a young student in Aug. 1981. I think it took me a whole day. I am not sure if I would call the 6€ a rip-off for the train ride from the airport to the city center. It is reliable, on time, and quick. Here in Vienna, one pays 12€ for the airport to city center train. It is 9km. All in all, I found the trip by train far less stressful than flying. Also, compared to what such a ride will cost you here in Central Europe, say from Vienna to Berlin or Frankfurt, it will cost much more and probably be more crowded. Yes, I will now go and see what other videos you have. Thank you, from Vienna.

Love this format! It is great to hear your thoughts. With only a 15 minute difference - train wins! Additionally, trains evoke a more relaxed feeling. A leisurely sight seeing trip as you are transported to your next dedtination. 🚆🚅
The train is cheaper by alot, is only 15 minutes slower, no hassle and great view. Therefore I would take the train.
If booked in advance, even by a few days, the train often beats the plane but....
Next day or even same day journeys via cheaper airlines can often be considerably cheaper and worth the extra hassle, however extra costs related to covid may have made that obsolete.
@@77smp I used train pal for a ticket from kings cross to waverly and it split my tickets to £12.

As there is not much difference in duration people should be travelling by train and it is cheaper. Only actual data taken from the airlines and railways could give the correct picture.

I always enjoy your travel videos but sometimes get distracted from the scenery whilst reading the sub-titles. Apart from basic information such as ticket prices, station identities etc., which are better as sub-titles, your voice-over information is far more easily absorbed whilst I enjoy the journey. Please keep this Vlog format and your sense of humour.
The voice-over is a lot more pleasant and better timed than "The text..." "which always seems..." "to stay on screen..." "for a very long..." "time.".

@@grendel_nz that's the problem most of the time they don't stay on the screen long enough to read so I have to stop it and pause it.
Just so they use a guy's voice when a guy talks and a female voice and a female talks I'm good with it ☺️

You really trekked from London to Edinburgh AND BACK for research but it’s the hills that did you in! Haha. That being said, this was a great vid and you’ve done a lot people a favour with it. I’ve only been on the LNER to Edinburgh and it was very comfortable for standard class. Will take it over airport stress and I’ll be glad to show this to a mate who insists on flying over on our next trip!

I actually prefer the voice over as opposed the text as it obstructs the film, especially in those more picturesque videos like the amazing video last week. Keep up the good work and I hope you continue the voice over format.

I've travelled the east coast line several times and have always found it a pleasant and interesting journey, probably finishing faster than I would have liked. Contrast that with the trip from Sydney to Brisbane on the XPT which takes at least 12 hours by night and if you take the day train (only one per day) you end up on an even more incredibly boring bus from Casino to Brisbane because it's a single track reserved for freight traffic. I can't wait to go back to the UK again!
By the time Japan celebrates 100 years of high speed rail in 2064, Australia might finally have HSR along its east coast, but I wouldn't be holding my breath. I won't be around anyhow.

Love the voice over format, not that the text only format was bad. You have a quite agreeable tone to your voice. Pretty cool comparison. Picking the starting and ending locations like that makes it a realistic comparison. To me the clear winner was the train. A difference of only 15 minutes in time, yet half the price and hassle and twice the view. (Although, the wait for the plane involved "a few" pints. So it's got that going for it.) Look forward to more videos like this.

I went on the train Ed-York return a while ago and loved it.
If you do more vids it would be great to do the sights along the way and drop ins/wanders through the places.
And if you could, run a compressor or something to keep volumes steady and consistent as it gets very loud and quiet randomly

He speaks! Hooray! 👏🏻. Really enjoy your videos but adding voiceover really does take things to the next level. Positives: you have a very clear and appealing voice with a fairly neutral accent (but I detect Northern maybe?). Some light touches of humour but without trying to be funny and ending up as cringe. This was great subject matter for audio.
Things to consider, the audio levels were very low. Watching on my smart tv I had to have the soundbar volume way up. And that first shot in close up.. wow that was close! 😆.
Overall fantastic and a massive step forward. Well done! 👍🏻

Really cool video, man. I was wondering about this exact topic myself, as I want to go from Edinburgh down to London with my wife and son. Seems like a cheaper option, more comfortable, scenic, and takes almost the exact same time. Not to mention that for us, it'd have to include luggage (free on the train, god knows how much more for plane), and you'd have to add time for baggage drop and pick up at the end.

I recently made the trip to Edinburgh by train from Coventry did seriously consdier flying but for that length of trip I find train is far easier and far more comfortable, flying maybe marginally quicker but train is much more convienent and you get some lovely views going up through the lake district.

Thanks Dylan. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I think in normal times the train would beat the plane because getting off a well filled A320 usually takes ages. Then, there is the cost which massively favours the train. 😉
It worked for me. No trouble with the voice over! Why anyone would bother with the plane for this is a mystery. A lot more money and hassle for a few minutes saved. If you had flown into Heathrow it would make much more sense. Heathrow Express is a rip off. TfL much cheaper I think.
I agree! Even if it was the same price, the train is far more relaxed and well worth the extra 15 minutes imo!

Great video, and nice to see there is very little difference in overall time yet the actual experience of train versus plane for me the train wins handsdown. Air travel is a lot quieter at the moment due to pandemic anyway, and you were blessed with no delays on either mode of transport which of course could happen anytime anywhere for any reason. Budget wise, clearly the train wins hands down although if you booked far enough in advance with carriers such as EasyJet you could probably get a closer match on fare prices, likewise train fares can be a lot more expensive too depending on when you book. The new "low cost train service" Lumo has now launched in competition to LNER offering no-fuss fares between London and Edinburgh for around £30 which for me just gives more reason to take the train. I have done this journey in the past on both modes of transport (not in a race situation) and I'm definitely a fan of the train since you just sit down and relax from station to station, you can work, eat, chat, sleep and no hassles with security or having to get to/from airports. Edinburgh is beautiful too!
Great video, I love watching the train & tube portions. As an American, I am so envious of UK’s train system. A comparable distance in US would be Wash., D.C.- Boston but costs at least 5 times as much on our Amtrak system, and 2x slower.

I didn’t realise London-Edinburgh or visa versa was so cheap by train. I’d certainly do more travelling in the uk.
It's down to booking in advance although that ties you to a specific train. If you want or need to be flexible you can leave buying a ticket until the time you travel but it's much more expensive. One way it's £79.20 on Saturdays and Sundays or if you arrive in London after 11:17 Monday to Friday. If you arrive earlier than that Monday to Friday it's £166.00. Both before any Railcard discount that may apply.

Great video. I’ve lived in both Edinburgh and London and had to make trips between the cities for work, and used to wonder which mode of transport would be overall the quickest. Generally I preferred to fly, but I’d pick London City any day over Heathrow. Door to door, to/from City I could make the journey in less than 3 hours. Although flights from City are generally much more expensive.

This is a very cool video... it is extremely more enjoyable to just sit back and relax watching the views while listening to the description of the tour, that way we don't miss any information. Awesome Race...!! Almost 15 minutes of difference... well even though the Plane still Beats the Train, I guess there are still some advantages to using the train, as the cost, less than halfways cut.

I'm a frequent flyer between Belfast and London and would absolutely love to see a train/boat trip between the two! I've always been tempted to get the boat either to Liverpool or Cairnryan (the later of which only takes just over 2hrs!) and then a train down to London. Absolutely fantastic videos, especially this one, and thanks so much for all of the work and effort you put in. Really enjoyable!!
