I recently did a same-day round trip from Edinburgh to London, flying early in the morning to Luton and getting the train back in the evening (this just happened to be the cheapest combination that day). I've always preferred the train for this and most other domestic routes, because although it takes longer, it's more comfortable and not so broken up. I think in future I'll look at both options and just take whichever is cheapest and most conveniently timed.

let's be honest though, an easyjet flight from london to edinburgh (as long as you don't book it in the same week) is likely to be a LOT cheaper than the train. Train can be routinely £80-90 whereas easyjet put ticket prices as low as £20 if you book a month or so in advance

I can sympathise with Nicky about climbing the stairs from Market Street to the Royal Mile in Edinburgh it is incredibly steep, particularly if you are in a race. So, I get why you would refer to it as a mountain.🤝😖
A little different perspective from an American. It's a MUCH larger country. There are two factors to consider for me. 1) The train system in the US is generally far worse in the US than in Europe. 2) However, our flights are on a whole much more expensive, even the budget airlines. So for me, if a train is even an hour or two slower, I'm ALWAYS gonna take the train in those scenarios. Nonetheless this was a very fun video!
Luton are in the process of building a people mover a la gatwick but between the train station and the terminal i believe. 'The in between carriage bit' u mean the vestibule hehe
Liam, brave man doing LKX to Edi in standard 😃 Great race, I have a similar conundrum travelling throughout Europe or even Long haul being based in the North. Choice is usually BA out of LHR and take LNER down from Doncaster (1hr 45m), get across London to Paddington and then pay exorbitant Heathrow Express fee. Alternative... fly with KLM out of either Leeds, Humberside or Manchester and go via AMS (50min flight) with a 2hr or less layover. When you add up the time and hassle factor, I choose KLM every time. Shame a dutch airline services the north better than our national flag carrier but go with what works.👍
I sympathise with you climbing those steep steps up to the Royal Mile, gruelling exercise then of course you have the slope up the cobbled street to Edinburgh Castle itself.
Even though nick won I think he would have been better off taking the BA flight from London city. Feel like that would be the better option but maybe it’d make the competition unfair
Weird that you got on LNER and went past a Lumo train in one of the stations, Lumo (ECTL) is designed to be a plane beater with very limited stops. Not watched to the end, so hope trains won anyway. Antici....pation!
on 18 Aug EZY delayed by 2 hours ex LGW and on arrival at EDI we had a further 45 mins to wait while some body could be found to deplane us. On that occasion, we could actually have driven quicker! Next time I will go by train!
I've done both journeys several times on business, from Croydon, except I went from Gatwick. Liam - Farringdon - did you know that, if you've pre-bought your train ticket, there's a direct pedestrian link from the District & Circle line Northbound platform, over a footbridge (about half-way along the platform), back down straight onto the Thameslink Northbound platform? You could have saved 5 minutes had you used that. 🙂 Nicky - I found the Edinburgh tram slower than a taxi, but I guess, as you observed, it depends on taxi availability.
Worth noting on the train that it depends what company you use. For me I have to get Cross Country and they often don't have decent (or any) food and drink so not the type of service shown here..
Me, Conor and Russell had a race from London to Edinburgh. We were class peers from school and our class peers referred me to James May, Conor to Jeremy Clarkson and Russell to Richard Hammond and dared us to do a Top Gear version of a race. At 1:00, we can still see your reflection when you stopped running to go back and get your camera 😉🤣
For almost a 100 pounds difference, I'll take the train for sure. But I am train hound, so might still take the train if the price would be the same. Unless I really can't afford 40 minutes...
That depends when you want to go. There are 2-3 flights a day from Luton to Edinburgh & you would need to book in advance. Trains run at least every hour & you can just turn up.
First class is the only way on a long train. Too many scum in second class.
Surprised Liam lost here. I once raced my brother from London Gatwick to Dundee, I took the train and he flew and I won by an hour and I got all the lovely views, no check ins, no waiting in a lounge, no security...... take the train to Scotland
Can you do the same but Rome-Milan ? Frecciarossa vs Ita Airways
Great video! I was trying to decide between train and flight and it was helpful. I prefer to see the landscapes during the trip.
You guys are funny 🫶
For a difference of under an hour? No question, the train all the way. If security was more like normal and you didn't have the quick pass or whatever its called then it would be longer for sure. The train is way more scenic, and better for the environment. And cheaper! Win all around.
At the start you can see that they stop running as soon as they're out of shot in the reflections 😅 great vid as always
While the plane did win. Is the doubling the cost worth the time that was saved by taking the plane?
I checked and the plane ticket can be as low as 30€ so i guess it depends on how much baggage you carry and how much time you have
let's be honest though, an easyjet flight from london to edinburgh (as long as you don't book it in the same week) is likely to be a LOT cheaper than the train. Train can be routinely £80-90 whereas easyjet put ticket prices as low as £20 if you book a month or so in advance
@@andrewhayes92You don't compare the max train fare with the min plane ticket. It's just not an authentic comparison. I just checked and I could easily find a train fare for £36 or £24 with a Railcard.
It actually is an authentic comparison, I looked it up, travelling on the 10th-17th November and here is the prices I found. These are all return trips
EasyJet: London Gatwick-Edinburgh (With cabin luggage) £128.96
British Airways: Economy Plus London Heathrow-Edinburgh (£114.10)
LNER: Kings X-Waverly £128.80
LUMO: Kings X-Waverly £137.80
Avanti West Coast: (I could only book as far as 6 weeks so dates are 13th-20th October) London Euston-Waverly £141.20
5:18 Nice to see Nicky getting the workouts sorted lol
"It's a hot day, It's 27 degree" 🤣🤣🤣😂🤣I am Scottish living in Australia that is not hot!!! 27 degrees is spring here.
I enjoy these race videos so looking forward to seeing more of them in the future
Thanks for the great videos, is it possible to add the CO2 footprint of the modes of transportation to the video?
The plane will certainly lose in that respect
I have admit that I do like some of the views out of the train, I hope that Liam's carriage has some nice A/C.
My fave duo together again 🥰🥰🥰
I love these videos, my flight anxiety tends to make me favor the the train
Dude, LNER has FREE seat reservations. Use them
Probably wasn't any left on that train if he booked into an unreserved coach.
Nicky rocking the TUMI! Love that backpack, it doubles in size
I flew London to Edinburgh in November. So easy. But next time I think I'll take the train for the views. Great video!
I like how theyre 'sprinting' to the tube away from the camera in the intro but in the reflection of the glass behind em you see they stop running after 2 meters.
Actually running out of the reflections too aint that hard is it?
The points guy uk make my day I love there channel❤️
They've opened a transit from Luton Airport Parkway to the terminal now
A. Skylink 100 quicker than the tram 30 mins and for LNER....Seatfrog, well worth it!
I agree, Airlink 100 would've been much more comfortable and faster.
I went with my dad from London to Edinburgh in September or October in 2019... Little did we know that there was a festival and that the train would be absolutely packed. We were sitting on the floor in that rubber connecting part, it was so full. So I didn't get to see the views, really bummed about that. Not my best afternoon
Amazing editing! Love your videos.
Why was Nick racing to the airport when the flight leaves when it leaves? 😅
always thought the same. in every video it looks like they race to their plane or train as if they would board the first available...
Lol at 27 degrees being extremely hot (laughing as an Australian)
the train wins it for me, the trains are really comfortable and you can be there directly from London city centre to Edinburgh city centre!
Entertaining video. Edinburgh is a nightmare in the summer. You guys did well.
Bro so far best video yet.
Sign: (says ‘Don’t Rush”)
Nicky: “Not this.”
Next time investigate the Elizabeth line, change at Farringdon (next stop from Kings Cross)
Liam! Shorts, shorts man! Great vid gents, like always.
Edinburgh trams are not a bad option at all.
A shade quicker than the bus, less expensive than a taxi so a very decent compromise.
Just love you two!
Weird that you got on LNER and went past a Lumo train in one of the stations, Lumo (ECTL) is designed to be a plane beater with very limited stops. Not watched to the end, so hope trains won anyway. Antici....pation!
Where I live, the humidity is 0% and 30 C is quite nice. Last month it was regularly 40 to 43. Am I missing something?
England
Thanks great video and funny as well. May have summarized the total costs and total time? It appears that you left London at 1130
How to book the train from London to Edinburgh?
on 18 Aug EZY delayed by 2 hours ex LGW and on arrival at EDI we had a further 45 mins to wait while some body could be found to deplane us. On that occasion, we could actually have driven quicker! Next time I will go by train!
Don’t know why you both run at the start - you clearly have set departure times on both of the main legs!
I watched this few months ago, now I rewatch this, got me teary because now I called Waverley my home base for the next year 🫶
I've done both journeys several times on business, from Croydon, except I went from Gatwick.
Nicky - I found the Edinburgh tram slower than a taxi, but I guess, as you observed, it depends on taxi availability.
Does anyone else think Liam is just so freaking adorable? The tousled hair, lisp and earring… 🤤
Liam You could have gone on LumO instead of LNER. It’s cheaper and quicker most of the time
What Is Thamesilk And tram?
If you buy a ticket to ‘Luton Airport’ (rather than Parkway) then your bus fare is included on your train ticket
Yeah, Nicky needs to run at the beginning of the video. He needs to get to Luton.
WTG NIKKI! The icecream did me in hahahahaha
What about the flight book in time ?
I went to Edinburgh this summer and I miss the castle so much
Generally the airport bus is slightly faster than the tram - except at peak times where the tram going off road for much of the route helps it.
Should've used Lumo. They are fast from London to Newcastle
LNERs xx00 departures from kings cross are still quicker. Dont know how but they are
@@ajf3202 Those services make fewer stops. Only stopping at York, Darlington, Newcastle, and Berwick-upon-Tweed before coming into Edinburgh
@@JackJackProductions lumo makes fewer stops but journey time wise LNER is faster
Dylan's Travel Reports beat you to it with this challenge guys. He even featured in the local Edinburgh press for it
Worth noting on the train that it depends what company you use. For me I have to get Cross Country and they often don't have decent (or any) food and drink so not the type of service shown here..
Nicky, yum, jet fuel! You sound like Homer Simpson with donuts! Lol 😝
Me, Conor and Russell had a race from London to Edinburgh. We were class peers from school and our class peers referred me to James May, Conor to Jeremy Clarkson and Russell to Richard Hammond and dared us to do a Top Gear version of a race. Conor had the car, Russell had the plane and I had the train.
Lol this is a nice video. My cousin and I always debating about getting into the tram or plane every time I go out of London. I am a plane person and she’s a tram person. Probably would always take the plane and will just experience the tram once .
On LNER coach c is the unreserve one. alway best to try that coach first for free seat . You can reserve seat up to 5 minutes before train departs too
My ass would be freezing in 27 degrees celcius
