you'd think the automakers could just put some UV protection into the plastic when they make the lenses.
They do but it breaks down over time. If they didn't your headlights would be faded in less then a year.
How would they make money selling you new ones?
@@1RAYGC Ever see the prices of new ones? Go figure.
They could care less about consumers, why don't you just buy a new car they say ??? ! ! ! Worthless thieves
But that wouldn’t make them money and they wouldn’t ever want that to happen.
If I had a dollar for every thing Scotty told me to do three or four times a year...
Three or four times a year I remember to do one of the 3 or 4 dozen things Scotty said I should do.
I'm glad for Scotty to repeat things again and again cos these days I'm surprised how quickly it fades from memory.
As a mechanic, he should know better. All you have to do is have the lenses clear coated with a two-part clear coat. It has to be clear and a hardener or it won't work. Then it'll last the life of the car and you won't have to do it 3-4 times a year. And if you're worried they might fade (like if you live further south), THEN you can coat them with an extra layer of "something" like what he uses here, but you don't have to.
@@cujoedaman he has a video on that subject. Says it doesn't last and can end up looking worse.

Bro, I'm 14 and not even close to having a car, but I'm still gonna try to remember these sick tips when I eventually do get one.
This tip isn't entirely useful. Once it is clouded, it is best to just use a restoration kit. The spray he uses won't do anything but lock in that yellow tint otherwise.
You are more likely to get a used car that already has some fading by the time you are able to drive. Stores like Walmart have headlight restoration kits that cost less than $20. The kit removes a lot of the cloudiness and then a spray provides a protective barrier. Or some people go to the extreme by using certain grains of sandpaper then putting on a protective coating that will last longer.
If you get a brand new car, it will take a several years before they begin looking cloudy. You can prevent the yellow tint from forming by avoiding sunlight. Such as leaving it in a garage or putting on a cover.
if u 14 and looking at these clips now u are on the right track.stay with us future csr guy.

I covered mine in turtle wax, you'd never know they were faded, because you can't see through the smudges.
You need to wax them again after a few months. I put 3m plastic sheeting over my headlights right after a wax job and they look brand new going on 3 years after.
@@34griter were they faded before you put the 3m or did you put it on to prevent fading? And how would me putting another blob of turtle wax over my headlights help anything? @the Janitor they used to have yellow ones in Europe.

In airframe mechanic's school we were taught to use a fine file to make powder from blackboard chalk and mix with a few drops of kerosene to make a fine polishing compound for plexiglass canopy scratches.
I musta skipped class on that day.
Good tip!
Or you can wax them every season with Nu Finish or any quality wax. They’ll never fade if you do.
Agree. I wax my car every season. Even the headlights. 4 years old. Stays outside in the hot sun and elements. They still look brand new.
On a 2003 dodge ram, i just waxed the headlights with rest of the truck. They stayed clean and fog-free for as long as i owned it and it was parked outside in SoCal sun.
Which wax did you use?
Meguiar's Gold Carnauba Plus Premium Paste Wax. I’m using this on current newer cars as well.
If you already have bad ones, wet sand with 1200 and keep stepping up to 2000 grit, buff them until they're almost clear then spray them with a good UV protected clear. They'll last a good 3-5 years then do it again.

I have found that OFF bug spray will remove most of the “film” on the headlights
That’s just temporary, you should wet sand them up to 3000, buff, then put a ceramic coat or clearcoat
Apparently the bug spray is breaking down the plastic. I would love to see how many applications will lead to the cracking / water leakage.

I've been using the Sylvania restore kit for years. And after a restoration, I install clear protective film. No hazing again
another trick my dad taught me years ago. all you need is 'Off' brand mosquito spray. and a clean rag. blast the spray on the headlights and let it sit for a minute, wipe it off and it will be shiny.
also you can use 3M 36060 Rubbing Compound, the more expensive way but it works better.

WTF!! Why don't car companies make the fronts like the rears that never need refinishing????????????????
Because it’s cheaper that way and they can make money when you buy a replacement. Also the front is mostly clear while the back is colored, so you can see it more visibly when it fades but I bet they both fade just as bad
The rear lights are a different composite plastic which shatter on impact!! The front lights are made of polycarbonate much harder than glass!! Have yet to see any plastic damaged by a stone ever!!!!🤔 And looking at modern car designs these days especially headlights designs which are becoming longer thinner, I would think it almost impossible to manufacturer from Glass!!! Have never had to restore rear light of all the cars I've owned over 20 different models!!!!😅
Why can't I just polish my old headlights and use it on them?
The protective coating is already gone, the plexus only serves to protect the protective coating.
You would have to brush them, coat them, and then use plexus or similar product to protect said coating.
I wet sand mine start with coarse to fine then put light coat of clearcoat
