HARLEY Davidson IRONHEAD Sportster CHOPPER Bobber BUILD / THE SAGA CONTINUES

- Decided it was time to start again on the 1976 Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster chopper project. After 5 months, I pulled the motor from it's original frame and installed it into the Paugcho rigid frame rolling chassis that I had already assembled. In this video, I had to disassemble the chassis back apart to install the motor. This video is actually a continuation of some previous videos that were made on this saga. Checkout the links down below. That are listed from most current to the most previous of videos.

Glad I ran across this video. I built a springer front end for an Ironhead back when I was in Machine Tool Tech. My instructor gave me some prints of things to build for my final projects of the course, and I told him they were boring and I'd never use them for anything. I asked could I build something else, and when I told him what I wanted to do he was all in. I didn't have much of a clue as how to start, so I ordered the Crime Scene Choppers Fat Cat Springer plans and went to work.
Fast forward almost 10 years and that bike is gone; I never finished it but I still have that springer hanging in my garage. It will never go away as long as I'm alive and I've got the itch to try and build another bike. I've gained a lot of mechanical experience over those 10 years, plus with the help of UA-cam I think I could pull it off this time.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the content and inspiration and I'm looking forward to seeing this bike finished.
Oh yeah....and I got an "A" for my springer project haha
When the frame fell... BEEN THERE LOL
Love supportin the local hardware store btw
Lol. Glad it's not just me. Figured I'd just leave that in there to prove I'm not a genius.
@@SaddleTrampTV you don't have to prove anything.
I had my bike on a rear stand and was jacking up the body to pull the front wheel and she tried to fall off sideways. That's not a good way to find out your garage floor isn't level.
Hell didn't expect you here
Hey Tramp it's gonna be fun watching you work through this build. The thing I like about Shade Tree is he don't hold back on the mistakes like his new front calipers. It makes me feel better because I do the same stuff and that's why I like your videos to. We are human and it's ok to make mistakes because that's the way you learn. Peace!
That's the main thing I like about you.
You're Authentic.
I'm learning from you how to, as well as how NOT to do things.
We are educated(hopefully)by our mistakes. We are also educated by the correct ways.
Keep up the good work!
Prop to Chris, wishing him the best. Glad the light wasn't mounted when the frame fell!
Wow. What a great gift. It’s awesome the way The Lord blesses the receiver and the giver at the same time. I could see in your face that you were touched. Thanks for keeping it real. Cool video.
Iron heads weigh a couple pounds for sure.
That was extremely cool of Chris giving the taillight. Especially over the reason common health issues. I know where he's coming from dealing with issues myself. Keep chopping!
Ark built about seven bikes, from the ground up everything from wiring paint, welding the works it's been a couple years since my last one but your video has inspired me to possibly build another one even though I don't need it. But I just enjoy doing it as well as riding. Take care man!

I should proofread my message before I send it, it wasn't Ark it was I
1976 Iron Head Sporty dropped into a rigid frame with a springer front end, drag bars on 6 inch risers, Sporty tank. A badass Bobber. I helped my uncle build it and when we fired it up he told me to ride it. When I got back he said happy birthday and handed me the title. Best 16th birthday a guy could ever have.
That's awesome.
I really like your videos. Nice to see I am not the only OPPPPS guy. I never miss watching your videos thanks for sharing with us keep them coming.
Thanks Kevin.
We've all had those "OOOPS" moments! Haha! All part of the fun. Gonna be cool for sure!
It’s people like Chris that make every second on a motorcycle a miracle for those of us that still ride. I’ll take a Little down time with our New England winters over never being able to ride again all day and twice on Sunday. God bless you Chris, even in MC abstinence you bring others good fortune
Very cool brother. I'm diggin it with ya. Lookin forward to see the progress. I sure like that vintage garage/shop. Fits your old school lifestyle perfectly. The tail light Chris sent is perfect. Very kind brother.
I have never seen anyone lay an engine over and drop the frame around it, I always call a friend or two and muscle it in. Have a blessed week SC
It's a lot easier that way when you're by yourself.
My little dumb ass man handled it out of the frame painted frame with a molded tank on old 58 iron head put it back together together damn I wish I had knew that was possible to do.20 years later I might get to do it your way.love the videos...thanks
Awesome gift Kris. Building takes many turns‼️
Watch your videos, make the dark and cold winter here in Norway so much brighter.
My first bike was a 1974 Sportster right side shifter electric start no kick 1500 bucks I think it was 1979 just graduated high school thanks for the ride back Saddle Tramp
This is good shit. Makes me want to.pull out my 91 sporty 1200 chop and finally finish up.
Do it, man!
Thanks ST, a pleasure checking the tab in the morning and seeing another of your posts. Great content and you be good to yourself also.
Really enjoyed watching you. Very cool tail light. Thanks
I know you still have a lot of work to do. But things are coming together a little at a time. Looks great so far. Definitely a on going project for life . That’s what makes it so cool though. 😎👍
This is what a chopper should look like, old school loves it AMIGO.
Man, I am so glad I'm not the only one who sits there just wrenching away to find out later I have to completely undo all my work to fit a part I wasn't thinking about!
Rigid frame sportster... thats cool !
Like the build...I built a 76 ironhead with a rigid frame.
0:00 - 0:25 - 'I think I grew up on this show in the 80's and 90's...'
And I love it!
Now that ya got the motor in the frame ya wanna use a flat end bar and raise the front of the motor up after ya loosen all fasteners then tighten them all up. This takes the strain of the mounts and prevents breakage. Gonna be nice Brother.
Saddle Tramp, same thing happened to me. I took off front end of my 1981 FXWG and the bike went backwards. Luckily it stood up on the rear wheel and didn't fall over. Whew. Scary stuff.
Good thing we only learn that once.
Awesome build love the old school harley just found ur video today have been watching shade tree for a while u guys keep up the good work
Thanks, man. Appreciate it much. Yeah I've been watching him for a while now too.
Every time I stroll into Ace Hardware the old fella in the back knows I'm there for nuts, bolts and washers for the Harley.
Great video. Looking forward to what will happen next. I will be taking notes as I have started on my Ironhead.
It was a pleasure meeting you today in Slidell. Thanks for the sticker and looking forward to more videos. Remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. Can't wait to see the finished product.
Likewise, Amigo. Good meeting you.
Sweet looking build!
And subscribed! I'm just starting with my ironhead. Really dig the content.
Hey Scooter, great video . Brings back a lot of memories. Been there,... (and gotta go back,,... 77 xlch, cam bearing ths time,... plus, plus, plus,...) .
I removed my engine and re installed it in the frame the same way only with an old car tire, miscellaneous wood blocks, and some towels about 20 - 25 some years ago . Best method If you're doing it alone,
Here's a couple more budget ideas you might like S.T.
X front motor mounts were cool back in the day and to me they're timeless and a must on a XL. Easy to make yourself and if I remember correctly you can use the originals, you'll just have a silly hole in the way, I think that was put there for highway pegs.
Another cool thing that doesn't cost a penny other than a cam cover gasket is to cut along the bolt line on the bottom bolts and then you get to see the entire oil pump, kind of a performance or bobber look. Not for everyone but cool if you're into such a thing.
I used to mill off the rib on the Primary cover to give it a really smooth look, but be WARNED, you break through in one area so you need someone to TIG it up on the inside. The look is very cool when finished, but again it's more work than most people are prepared for.
RIDE SAFE RIDE FREE BROTHER 🇺🇸🏍🇺🇸🏍🇺🇸
nice way to put the engine inside the frame,I love Ironheads!mine was similar as yours but wasn't rigid frame.Sure youre going to realise a real old shool bike.
Just keep doing what your doing Bro . Everything is cool and entertaining . Love the bike in the raw state. Cherrs mate
That tail light is going to look great! The bike is coming along nice, can't wait to see the finished product. I'm partial to Sportsters because I've had a few lol.
As usual! a real treat to watch you doing your things. Happy and mechanically inclined 2020. you're the Mister Roger of the Motorcycle Enthusiast world!
Thanks Christophe
Nice ! Me and my son just put together a 76 sporty !
Great vid. Loving the build
Love the ironhead. Great looking motor well done Tramp! Looking forward to see what you do with this bike.
Love your channel brother been watching you for about 6 months now, been riding since I was 7 so forty years under my belt now riding, but i got my first Harley about six months ago. I bought a 2001 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic and I love it. I've owned lots of Japanese bikes and I love all motorcycles, but there's nothing like a Harley, is there 🤘🏻
your intros feel a little like Mr. Rogers meets chopper world..haha..love your videos brother! keep 'em coming!
Your not the first to tell me that. But it's funny everytime I read it.
that's awesome...you are original and real, that's why we watch..do what you do my friend.
With these old scoots it's always an adventure. Been riding a shovel since mid 80's. Had a 79 1000 cc Sporty bought new. I still have the stock exhaust for the 79 if your in need of something different. They were factory tuned with the pipes coming back on each side, like a old dresser. I had drag pipes on it when I sold it. If your in need let me know. Ride Safe!
Never had one of these but love your videos. Keep them coming.
Just started and it already looks cool
I don’t know how you came up on my recommendation feed, but I love this channel. And low and behold I see Fazzios in Gpt! I’m right down the road!
🤜🏼🤛🏼
Cool, man. We be neighbors.
Ole skool chopper,,, ole skool build methods. That's how I'd have to do it bro. No lift table but I got a concrete floor... Haha nice
Looking good so far brother keep up the awesome videos and happy new year's to you and your misses.
This stuff is why your channel has exploded over the last few months. Keep going.
That looks like a repro taillight from a model T... that’s very cool ... and you have a whole new meaning to rolling frame !
Lol
Glad you didn’t get hurt !
☮️
Nice vid! I hope to do a chopper build soon
Good to see ya back out in the shop brother!
Lol,, glad you had the other scooters outside when that frame started floppin!
Thanks for another awesome video drummer.
This is goin to be a great build, I can feel it in my bones!!
I’m watching closely, because I’m trying to figure out what I can build for ya.... maybe a battery box,, I remember you telling me that John built the one under the Tramp,, so I would be honored to build one for the Ironhead.
Your thoughts?
Can’t wait to see this project come together!
You’re awesome brother, UBU! And you be good to yourself also!
Blessings your way 🧷✌️
LOL Please don't jinx my 76 Ironhead that has run fine all these yrs! (Bought it new!) It sat in my shed for the last 10 yrs but I finally fired it up a couple weeks ago. Normally it would start on the third kick but after 10 yrs of silence it finally breathed fire after about 7 kicks! What a sound! Nothing like it! Now I want to put a springer on it and bob it with a solo mustang seat. Going to keep the stock frame with the rear shocks... don't think my back could take a hard tail. Never ridden a bike with just seat springs so I don't know how much cushion they give. It currently as a mini king/queen seat (half the rise of the one you showed in your other video) that is absolutely beautiful but the wife can't physically get on the bike anymore because of arthritis in her hips so... with the solo she won't have to worry I'd be pickin up any other 'riders' lol.
Pulling the motor out of a sportster right now. Pulling the frame off the motor just saved my ass from a huge headache😂😂
Glad this helped.
Thank you man learn something and it's cool
I can’t say it enough ! Harley Houdini! Gonna be awesome! Sweet tail light !
And wonderful job editing ! You’re getting very dangerous! Awesome 👏🏼
Abra Cadabra, Hocus Pocus!!
SaddleTramp 😎🤘🏽
saddletramp keeping it real! Keep the videos coming brother!
Thanks. Will do.
Thanks Chris! 😎👍
Hey amigo! Cool video! I worked with a guy who would lay the rolling chassis on top of 2 tires. (the tires were under the wheels/ tires on the roller) Then he would put his bike jack, covered with blankets, under where the engine would mount. He would raise and lower the engine, as needed to line up the engine mounting bolts. Just a thought.
Now that's an idea there.
Looking back, I had a choice between a (mostly) stock ‘72 XLCH and a rigid frame sporty iron head chopper as my first street bike. I was about 20 and the vintage look of the stocker won my heart over the chopper. In hindsight, I wish I could go back in time and whisper in my own young ear and say GET THE CHOPPER. It was rigid frame, extended (and I mean LONG) forks and an engraved engine. Hindsight is 20/20 and painful.
Keep it up man! The adventures you have riding old iron are unforgettable. Good luck on your build! Btw. If you would like to part with that King Sportster tank let me know. I’d gladly take it off your hands.
Nothing more endearing than a good fuckup on video.
You could've edited it out but you're honest. Respect.
New subscriber I just inherited my dads 73 sportster, I have a channel with a lot of cool tools.
WOW that is such a cool taillight!! Ya know I really have no idea what I should do with this bike its in pretty good condition considering its been sitting for like 30 years inside a garage with a mild climate.
Love it,great vid.👍
I love your iron head Harley sportster I have a 1977 1000 that I need first gear and shims and spacers

We need more of these great bikes resurrected and on the road. Way to many baggers out there nowadays!
The neighbor and I are working on a sportster he acquired two bikes ones a Hardtail Santee frame will use that we pulled the motor from the 98 sportster will use that we painted some stuff just something to tinker with over the winter🖖🏽🖖🏽🖖🏽
Rattle can the old gal. With patience you can get super results cheap. Just my two cents. Thanks for the video. From a brother in Kentucky
Hell yeah really cool man
Nice build I like it it's long and mean.
keeping it real ONE mess at a time!
i rebuilt one of these it kept me in the club haha i was young and it was my first cast irion harley
I'm looking for iron head project, had a 1975 sporty. Loved that bike
Love it man Ontario canada
"Clip in the oil" tip.. I had a 79 iron head and the generator clip sheared, left the nut in the case. So I would pull the generator and check it. Also don't forget to polarize the gen. Hope this helps. Keep us posted. Gl
Tim, I'm working on a '79 Iron head (yeah-I'm glutton-but damn when she runs...!) This may be a stupid question but could you refer me to anywhere as how to connect (correctly) my new solenoid-to starter-to-relay switch? is there a drawing on the internet or something? I appreciate any help-or suggestions (besides getting rid of her) Thanks-Ray
@@tucsonairbrush3233 it's been 20 yrs since my iron head days. It was a blast to ride. There may be a pdf file. There's a fella I know his name is Nick. He owns nick's custom in Williamstown nj can't remember street name. He could probably give you the correct answer for sure. Sorry brother. Don't give up.

Another great video...nice to see someone who is willing to include the oh shit moments...thanks for keeping it real ...
looks great
Hi there, great video man,the bike looks amazing....except for the front fender, but I’m sure you already got that covered.
Yeah the front fender is a no go for sure.
Back in the old days, (when I was young)
I would just unbolt, then (physically) lift the motor out, of a supported tied down frame!
I can't do that nowadays though,
there are too many aches and pains going on, with my knees and my back!
I still ride my 08 XL1200 Nightster everyday, to and from work!!
Take care of yourself, brother!
Ride Safe!
that sporty has good bones, should woork out just nice for ya.
Thanks for the vids, subscribed and watching from Lake Clifton, West Australia
NICE ! I did see that same video man. I was actually looking at this video BECAUSE of Shadetree. LOL just to see who else out there is a weirdo with some gnarly old bikes realy to scrap off and build.
I don't have anything quite as cool as this though sadly. but still , blah blah blah. LOL
RHEC 🔥 🔥 great video 🔥 🔥 RHEC
Cool light
Just seen a ironhead on craigslist no one answered. Im bummed. Looking for a cheaper ironhead with hardtail any help would be appreciated. As i am disabled and getting up there in age, 62 this year. I want to get in the wind again. Thanks for showing us you bringing her back...
Love this vid. I subscribed.
Thanks Jon!
I'm hoping to ride one more season... not sure, I have 55 bikes... I guess for sale, but they're 40 to 50 years old
honest video not editing out the doh! moments. reminded me of that David Mann Easy Rider art work of the guy realising he is just about to unbalance his gas tank. rock on.
