    i got 1990 k5 blazer 5.7 had it rebuild with a few up grades everything is pretty mush stock i up graded the cam to a howard cam rattler lift 225/230 duration 0.50/227/235 centerline 03 i still have the factory swirl port heads i got headers 3' pipes all the way back i up graded my torque converter to 2000 to 2400 stall and 4:10 gears i just put my engine in about a week ago it was a tbi so i converted it to carb...im having problem trying to get it to run right i put a brandnew edelbrock carb 1406 on it..i got 12-887 holley regulator set it to 6 psi i got it to run starts up good but its backfiring and popping out my exhaust ..i have a vacuum port on my regulator but did not hook it up dont no if thats the problem or not..or is the carb to small for my set up...you can smell the burning and the raw gas in park when u accelerate and give it more gas it sound good but at idling its popping and backfiring like someome popping fire crackers..tell me what you think

    I have an Edelbrock 350 (sbc) supercharged with two 600 Edelbrock carbs, both appear to be letting fuel past the accelerator pump when under hard acceleration, any ideas?? currently in the top hole position

      Did you try the middle hole ? I would if you havnt ! Other wise not sure what to say . Why do you think fuel is getting around the plunger ?

  • @viss001

    I'm running a Blueprint 350 with a 1406 (600CFM). I tried both the top and middle holes while I was first tuning the engine. The top hole definitely delivers a bigger squirt, which made my engine bog for a split second, nothing too horrible. I went to the middle hole and the squirt felt more appropriate. I guess I can see how the top hole would deliver too much initial squirt in a bigger carb (750) that is already providing enough flow. Setting the floats properly is also critical as you mention. Good video.

    This is a great video. I’m having the same problem. 650avs on my 429 big block. Mash the throttle from a stop and it flat lines for like two seconds then runs hard. My wide band tells a different story. It goes completely lean like 19-21 which to means not enough fuel shot? If too much fuel it would flood and the wide band would indicate 10 and below but my MSD would lite it anyway. Car guys suggested a stiffer pump assembly from the bigger 750-800 series carbs edelbrock part #1470 in addition to a bigger nozzle for a faster greater volume fuel shot. What do you think? My builder suggest a Quick Fuel 750 SS-AN series and call it a day…..

    • @theweldor757
      @theweldor757  2 роки тому

      If its just a mild build , and your not sea level .
      Sure sounds to me like its flooding from the stab of the peddle . Takes a cpl seconds to recoup and come around ! Have you ben inside the carb yet ? Ive seen them brand new outta the box with the floats outta wack bad ! I know if you drop the float level to much . It doesnt fill up inside enough to fill the pump well . And results in a partial/half squirt ! If you havnt tried the middle hole on the pump arm give it a shot ! I had a 429 in a work truck . 262 comp cam headers ! Hauled ass ! I leaned the jets one size it ran hard ! But im also mile high brother ! Double check fr vaccum leaks ! Try the middle fr sure if you havnt already ! Check a cpl spark plugs . Are they black n wet ? Or white and dry ?

      @@vela07 I have since done a lot of mods to my car including twin superchargers and a 750 double pump. if you still have the endelbrock I would try the different levels of pump shot along with pulling the needles up quicker as you engine transitions from light throttle to WOT. I used to have my enrichment come in around 8” inches of vacuum which helped dramatically with the off idle stumble. I also found the Edelbrock and my dizzy vacuum advance liked the ported manifold vacuum better because it gave me a more stable idle timing then the advance would kick in as you mashed the throttle. Trial and error but make sure you get those vacuum leaks taken care of first and foremost.

      You really need to look inside the carb even brand new ! I've seen floats sank on one side not the other brand new out of the box . If the floats are to low on Edelbrock style carbs don't fill the well up all the way for the accelerator pump if the floats are set to low . You almost have to get inside and verify some stuff is right before continuing on !

      I just bought the carb,brand new,after fucking with a Holley Brawler carb for about a year,and have not done anything but change the pump adjustment setting,and fuel/air mixture screws.I am waiting for a phenolic spacer plate for heat dissipation.The guy at Edelbrock said that this carburetor was a direct fit to my intake manifold,with no spacer plate needed.I'm getting ready to set the fuel/air mixture by using a vacuum gauge hooked up to the intake.Next I guess would be to take the top off and check the float level's.Damn,you guy's waste no time helping a brother out,that was the quickest response time I've ever seen.Awesome!!Thank's!

      @@scottwiegand2310 always glad ta help a brother out ! Ive seen so many problems brand new outta the box ! You just gotta get in side n make sure everything is right first . Check the the float drop and float level for full . Check your jet sizes while your ther . Pull a primary . Check numbers on jet . Pull a secondary jet fr grins . Check numbers for size . Go on line make sure those jets are what the carb should come with . All the jets should have a 120 number . Then 3 more numbers . Its the other 3 you need to pay attention to ! Itll be like 401 . Take those three numbers , minus 300 . Gives you your jet size . So a 401 . Is a jet size of 101 . If its a 398 . Minus 300 . Is a jet size of .098 . So number 98 jets . Check the needles also . Make sure ther what ther supposed to be . Stay in that middle hole on the accelerator pump !

    That’s interesting, everything I’ve read and researched said if you have a flat spot to wise up to this position because it gives a larger squirt of fuel. But I have to admit, it’s not helped one bit. I’m going to try going back to standard position. Ford 400 with flat head pistons and a mild cam, headers and can’t get it to run like my bronco with the same engine minus the upgrades mentioned. Any other thoughts on what to adjust if this doesn’t work?

    • @theweldor757
      @theweldor757  3 місяці тому +1

      Look at how many ppl in here posted Bam ! Fixed my flat spot ! Didn't watch any videos my self from others on flat spot on launch . But common sense would say if anything a flat spot would be rich . Thats not directed at you . Just thinking you said most other videos said to go fatter on launch . In my mind . Im thinking if you're lean on launch after squirting all that fuel in ther . Youd be having other issues after launch . Only one kid posted some smack about being on the top hole . And his stock small block runs great he said . Its all about jetting he says . Well youd have to run super lean jet wise to off set the accelerator pump squirt . My 2 cents for ya ; If its a new carb ? Go back to stock jets n needles . Stock jets fr secondaries . Put the accelerator pump mid hole ! I talked to Edelbrock . They assured me ; they don't ship them in the top hole ! But they are . And its jackin the average joe up . Its like someone from holley is working at Edelbrock and sabbatoging the carbs ! Make sure the floats are correct ! If you get the floates to low . The one side cant fill the well for the accelerator pump . And you get a partial squirt off line . That will dump you on your face also ! Go back to stock settings . Middle hole see what happens . Check for vacuum leaks ! Brake port on back of carb fr sure . In a new Edelbrock . The secondary jets are one size smaller than the primary jets . So what i do . Is swap the secondary jets to the front a the carb . Put the primary jets in the back a the carb wher secondary jets were . Now your one jet size lean on primary jets from stock . Dont change needles ! Just swap jets front ta back . And then ill plug my vacuum advance . Permanently . So i can run another 5 , 6 degrees of intial timing . Stronger bottom end ! You can tell if your lean or fat jetting wise by how many turns out your idle screws are . If yr idle screws are only out 1 ta 2 half turns and its happy . Your on the fat side . If you have to turn the idle screws out 6 , 7 half turns to make it happy . Your on the lean side ! Go Back to stock settings . Check for vacuum leaks . Check float levels . Mid hole on accelerator pump arm . Watch the Edelbrock staging spring video i did . Help ya some that way . I show you how to check your staging while the vehicle is running . Im here if you need anything brother !

      Check for vaccum leaks first ! That could cause both problems on each carb ! Make sure you have the right
      gasket , intake to carb . Check yr brake vscvum on back of carb . Make sure its tight ! Make sure all vaccum ports are good ! On the intake also . All ports hooked up or plugged ! Check your fuel out put before the carb . Rule a thumb is one pint mininum every 15 seconds . Make sure your getting good fuel pressure ! We ll start eliminating some stuff that it could be ! All that stuff checks out hit me back . We ll check a few more things !

Ive seen carbs brand new out of the box that had the float levels wrong . If the floats are set 2 low the accelerator pump well cant fill up far enough to give a full squirt . Itll make it fall on its face . Do you have a squarebore intake ? Or a spreadbore intake ? Some times when you put a squarebore carb ( edelbrock ) on a spreadbore intake . I added a Thompson Powerplate and was able use the top hole. If you dont know what that is ill try and explain. The plate deflects the stream of fule from thre nozzle. So instead of the punp shot looking like it comes out a garden hose it fans out. Even on the middle hole i could notice a difference. Better fuel atomization is my guess. They cost about 40 and mount under the nozzle. There are videos with side by side comparison. Being honest the only reason i bought one was someone i know tryed and i drove his Camaro with and with out and it also was a noticable difference. Any time brother ! The top hole if yr just cruisin low rpm , steady . And romp it . Itll choke out some n then come around . But if yr just cruisin . Steady . Mid rpm , , say 2800, 3000 rpm . And DONT give it any pedal . And it starts surging . Id check fuel pressure . At least 4 psi fr single carb . 6 , 7 psi for dual carb min . And as much as i hate to say it 🙄. Brand new dont mean nothing any more . Ive seen the floats totaly outta calibration new outta the box . Ya keep havin trouble . Poke inside the carb . Make sure float height AND float drop are set right ! If the float drop is not as much as it should be . The carb cant replenish the fuel fast enough . It used to light the tires up on the street all day long, I was running 275/60s mickey thompson indy profile ss tires, I know they aren't the best but w/e. Ok so the first time I ran it at a prepped track, after doing a good 3 or 4 sec burnout. it hooked more than usual and it fell on its faced sounded like it turned off for about 3 seconds and then it blew some smoke out , cleared out and hauled but. my more experienced friend called it, he said move the accel pump one notch smaller. it was on the shortest(biggest squirt) and we put it in the middle and bam it worked a hell of a lot better still only ran like a 13.90 but thats besided the point. it was a 750 though but same principal. I have two edelbrock carbs on a 350 sbc with a tunnel ram. Both are using "your top hole" Engine runs great. These carbs are awesome. I believe you have other issues. Not the excelerator pump. Maybe too much carb for your engine. Maybe timming, maybe jetting in carb. Weak spark.

    I've got a Performer 750 on a 454, mounted in the top hole, with no issues like this "flat spot" thing. the only thing i struggle with is getting it over 4000rpm (assuming my rpm gauge is working correctly). Gonna send it to an ingition timing adjustment, and then get someone that realy knows these carbs to take a look at the jet, rods and squirts combination.
    Allso.. saying the top hole will not work guaranteed is kinda "false advertisment". It is made to work for certain scenarios. It says in the manual that the bottom is for smoother accelerations and less fuel usage. Top hole is for street rod/race. But if your jets, rods and squirts are too big or too small, then ther's your problem. The problem is just noticeable different when using the top hole.
    If it doesnt work in the top hole, but suddenly works perfectly in the middle, then something smells fishy, if you cat my drift. Then something should still be wrong, its just not as noticeable.
    That bracket with the 3 holes are not doing anything other than regulating how fast and how agressive the throttle respons is (or Should be), it has nothing to do with the potential amounts of fuel going into the engine!?

    • @theweldor757
      @theweldor757  4 роки тому

Thers quite a few ppl that chimed in Thanx in the coments . Looks like it solved the problem fr a lot of ppl . Seems ta me any how a guy would half ta be really really lean on jet / needle combo to off set the the extra fuel . Or , have a low float setting to wher you only get a half squirt any how . @@whodatisful i cant help ya on a holley brother . I gave up on those in the 80s . I could bore you all night with stories helpin ppl out by taking ther holley off and putting a edelbrock on . Problem solved ! Ive throwin around 30 holley carbs in the trash . One example . An old neighbor 20 years ago . Had a like 65, 66 mustang . 289. 4 barrel heads . 4 speed . Car was at a local garage . Tune up dont run right . Garage talked him to a holley . Didnt run any better . Takes it to another garage . They told him you bought the wrong holley ! Buy this one . He buys that one . Left the garage with the car barely runnin . I didnt know him yet . But hes out side workin on it . Sounds horrible . I introduced my self . He told me the story . Wanted ta know if id work on it . Nope sorry . I only no one guy that has luck with those . Send him up to the mechanic i know . He tells him the same shit . O you bought the wrong holley . So my neighbor buys a third holley . I see him a cpl days later . Hey howd that work out for ya ? It didnt he says . Same problem . You drive it he says . Went around the block . Tital disaster ! As soon as you hit the pedal the motor would flood out . Couldnt even rev it up and side step the clutch . Instant choke . So i told him i had a edelbrock if he wanted to try it . Nothin ta loose he says . Took about 20 mins . Git a 600 edelbrock on it now . Fire it up . Seems way way happier ! Test drive . That little 289 laid down about a 25 foot patch a rubber jumpin on the highway . I told him ya got posi ay ? Geuss so lol ! Cars never ran like this ! Little car hit 128 mph . In third gear ! Guy called me Mr Edelbrock for the next 2 years till he moved . Guy was goin through a tank a gas every 2 days goin to work with that holley . He drove almost 2 weeks on a tank with a edelbrock ! And laid rubber doin it ! Ive done that 50 flippin times through years for other ppl . Threw ther holley in the trash put the original q jet back on or a edelbrock . I havnt worked on holley for 30 plus years ! Sorry brother ! See if someone you know has a edelbrock you could try !

    i have it on the top hole and it responds perfect with no bog out, adjusting the jets is what it is

    • @theweldor757
      @theweldor757  4 роки тому +1

      If you adjust your jets lean enough for that much gas on the excelerator pump at launch your gonna be way lean after you give it the gas on launch . After the launch , vacuum is pulling fuel through the Venturi the accelrator doesnt give it any more gas .
      This last guy we left the jets stock for a 750 cfm . It was on a 427 BBC that produced 650 hp on the dyno . Top hole was to much fuel ! It still ran , but not right . So what your sayin dont make sense unless thers a vacuum leak off setting the extra fuel its gettin ! Hey , as long as its running right ?

      @@JM-xi8uz your the FIRST person in over 30 years that ive ever herd of running the top hole and NOT having a issue ! The 427 guy got that 750 Edelbrock for free . It came off if i remember right a motor that had like over 800 hp . Guy was racing with it at the track . Didnt like the way it ran so he gave it away . Edelbrock ASSURED me they do not ship on the top hole . Which i know isnt true cause ive seen them brand new outta the box twice now in the top hole ! I know if the floats are set to low the gas cant properly fill the accelerator pump well . Maybe your on the top hole . But only getting a half squirt ? When i tried it it was on a 350 sbc . 305 heads . RV cam . Headers . It took like 3 seconds plus to recoup from that much gas ! Fell on its face BAD ! I changed it back to the middle hole immeadently ! My flat spot went away ! Just my opinion . But something dont seem right brother ! Be safe !

    Thanka for tips, from your experience! But please, PLEASE, do something. Stop saying El debrock. The word, the brand, the family name is Edelbrock. It sounds as dumb as the people that say Wall Mark. It's Wal-Mart. Say it with me EDEL BROCK, EDEL BROCK. There, fixed it for you.
