Allergies are definitely one reason some people avoid fish as typically fish, beef, and dairy are the main allergen culprits in a cat's diet! I haven't noticed any allergy issues for George and Eleanor, but the reason I try to limit fish in the diet is because there are some studies that indicate fish based diets may be linked to hyperthyroidism (due to elevated levels of iodine and polybrominated diphenyl ethers found in carnivorous fish) as well as urinary tract issues (due to often elevated levels of magnesium) and mercury exposure from large fish like tuna. So for those reasons, I try to limit fish in George and Eleanor's diet and avoid purely fish based foods when I can.
These videos might be the actual best way to approach nutrition, weighing pros and cons of ingredients, and budget. While i don't think rotating this much is best for all cats, I do LOVE the way that you've been explaining your thoughts and reasons behind all of your decisions in this video series. Thank you so much!!
Thanks! Definitely agree that this much rotation isn’t for everyone… I try to make sure people know this isn’t professional advice 😅 I just have really picky cats that won’t eat the same stuff over and over. If I could do just one food three times a day for a month or two I totally would!
@@sirgeorgetheragdoll for sure! And every cat is different. This is such a good approach though. I'm getting a kitten soon and starting to plan a food rotation similar to this now.
@link.6757 awww big congrats! Giving kittens different flavors and textures can be important to get them used to different options down the road. Just go super slow if you do switch things up every now and then. And no need to rotate as much as I do… this is definitely overboard and a result of picky cats + cat mom anxiety 😹
As a former vet tech, ngl, my cats have sensitive tummies and can't handle a ton of meats and have a severe chicken sensitivity (which really narrows things!). I do minimize the amount of fish they eat, but they still eat a decent amount as they handle it best and their vet is fine with it. They're thankfully very healthy and we had a previous cat with similar issues who lived to 21, so in my mind counterbalancing other aspects like hydration and activity is the bigger battle. I think even for cats that don't have a limited diet, having a bit of fish is alright, especially if it's a minimal ingredient and you're putting in effort to encourage hydration and a healthy range of proteins. I do find it odd that they don't label it on the front though. If it's a big concern for you, I would try the weruva (both regular or the BFF) chicken pate, it's a similar price point and doesn't (last time I checked) include fish.
Thanks for the tips! I’m actually feeding a bit of Weruva this July! Sometimes I worry a little too much 😅 I find it’s a common thing where quite a few food companies put fish in their food, but it’s not the title of the flavor since it will be the fourth or fifth ingredient. A solid reminder that reading all the ingredients is so important, especially if you have a cat with allergies. And that must be super frustrating with the chicken sensitivity! Fortunately I feel like more and more companies are incorporating other flavors into their lines, but must be tough to think you’ve found a turkey pate only to read the ingredients and see chicken broth and chicken liver added!
@@sirgeorgetheragdoll Love weruva, and it's a nice in between cost compared to others. Worrying too much is a good thing, albeit stressful lol. It means you love your cats, and are committed to helping them have the best lives they can. Even just the effort is commendable, so don't beat yourself up about anything. Fed and hydrated is best :) Yes, having the fish in your case and chicken in mine being listed random in the ingredients is quite frustrating! And makes things feel a bit iffy with companies that aren't forthright. A bit like a bait n switch really
Totally agree. The lack of transparency with ingredients and nutrition for some brands is crazy. I don’t understand why there aren’t stricter requirements. The guaranteed analysis on food labels is simply not enough. Allergens buried down at the bottom of an ingredient list is not okay!
@@sirgeorgetheragdoll 100%!! i really wish there were more groups at the state or federal level that monitored this and help companies accountable. So many pet parents want to do their best, and doing so should be made accessible and manageable
Correction: 2:20 AAFCO does not certify foods. I select foods that have been labeled as meeting AAFCO standards 🥰

Oh I haven’t heard about the No fish issue. Why no fish? Allergies?
