As a post-script to all of this, Tim Anderson's walk-off home run at this game was the 15th walk-off home run against the Yankees by a White Sox player in history. The First? July 20, 1919. The batter? Shoeless Joe Jackson, a man who would be suspended, and then banned, months afterward in the wake of the aforementioned Black Sox Scandal.
Sometimes things just click together like that.

Tim Anderson’s profile as a hitter basically always walked the razor’s edge of viability: he chased a lot, didn’t walk, and didn’t make particularly hard contact or hit a ton of line drives. He had enough raw ability to still get the ball into the outfield with a not great swing, and enough speed to leg out an infield single. Once he started aging a little bit and those skills slowed down though all those just became outs.

Being from Italy and not having access to american sports when I was a child,I got into baseball late in my teenage years and in 2021 I was still in that learning phase about the game itself and the MLB. When I read about all the Field of Dreams event and witnessed the game itself being played I was mind-blown to say the least, because it was so far off from my european view of a sports game. That Giancarlo homer was probably one of the earliest "hype memories" I have as a Yankee fan,as well as that Anderson walkoff was probably one of the earliest heartbreaking baseball moments I have experienced.

The point about current integration I believe is not totally fair. Part of the reason is that there's a significant amount of international players, mostly from Latin America. I very much doubt that the mlb leaders are pro-hispanic racists (for context, 30% of the players in MLB are latino, and they represent 18% of the population).
Also, as a latino myself, I wish the MLB adopted the census system for the ethnicity classification, where hispanic/latino is not a race question (because hispanic/latino is a cultural marker, not a racial one).

    • @jord.an6123

huh? The MLB can, as an institution, have done a *terrible* job integrating black players - while *ALSO* having done a *good* job integrating players from other groups.
That isnt contradictory. You can be good in one area and bad in another. It's definitely a fair point to make imo.

Making this a race video was very unexpected. I love the history and showing that Tim Anderson got to wear a jersey so many black players were wrongly not allowed to wear. But putting blame on MLB for not having more black players is wild. The NFL is over 50% black and the NBA is around 80% black (depending on year). It statistically seems to be that black athletes typically pick other sports down the road. Even Anderson, the highlighted player in this very video, picked baseball over basketball later in his athletic career. I'm not angry about the statement or anything. I just get tired of people saying one thing to make something seem racist or not fair. Clearly the best baseball players get to the MLB. It's not about race.

Tim Anderson also picked Baseball over Basketball solely because of one factor: He is 6'2" and he thought that would mean he would never have an NBA career. He didn't do it because of some deep love for the game of Baseball.

idrk where to put this but i’ve got a great idea for weird rules that also rags on the NFL as the show usually does😂
In 1989 the NFL passed a rule that penalized home teams if the crowd got to loud and the rule was implemented in Indianapolis, there’s plenty of footage and interviews from the game

You can't just compare 2 numbers and say "racism" without actually presenting evidence that racism caused the change in numbers. Maybe the black athletes that would be good at baseball are choosing basketball and football instead because those sports have grown in popularity since 1979 and baseball has declined in popularity since 1979

    • @LEEboneisDaMan
      @LEEboneisDaMan Місяць тому

Yeah. And that’s partially on the MLB for not investing in the community of the sport. You think youth players these days are choosing football and basketball randomly? No. The NBA and NFL pour tons of resources and time into appealing to young people. Both to get them to play the sport and too watch it. The MLB has comparatively done a much worse job of that.

This took quite a weird turn. The sport's two biggest stars are Japanese and biracial and the MLB is made up of around 30% Hispanic players, so to imply there's some agenda against minorities is pretty ridiculous. No one is turning down talent because of color, background, or even planet if it came to that. There's a lot of social factors that play into a sport's ethnic composition and in this case I don't think it has much if anything to do with baseball's "lack of outreach". It's just not as relevant culturally anymore and many kids just grow up wanting to be basketball and football players, so instead of feigning some infantilizing concern that some "sad" or "shameful" gatekeeping is preventing black athletes from playing baseball we should be celebrating the fact that they are exercising their own agency and choosing to play the sports they prefer.

    Good video.
But making Tim Anderson look like he’s some kinda angel is a far reach. I don’t care if he enjoys the game, flips his bat or whatever…as long as he’s respectful to the other team.
He’s shown signs before that he sometimes isn’t respectful.
Also the reason black players (as in from America) are underrepresented in baseball is not because the sport is “racist” or “stodgy”.
One reason of the many reasons is because young black men can make more money in basketball and football in a short amount of time and not have to go through the minor league circuits.
This “everything is because of racism” stuff is getting old.
And I’m brown, by the way.
