    ***Need a tool.... make a tool***
    I find building my own tools to be much more satisfying than just buying tools... and better quality too.
    Love seeing people think outside the box... and building their own tools.
    Great job, Tim.... can't wait to see the future updates on the surface grinder.

    Nice idea and construction. If it needs more weight, you could even pour the rubbery compound inside of it to give it more flywheel like weight. Thumbs Up!

    fantastic job. I made a hub in similar fashion using aluminum but turned the surface with a course finish as to lock the urethane. I believe the urethane sticks to metal with incredible strength as I found out with a couple of tests.

    If it helps make it better......how about turnings shallow grooves on the cylinder outer side and/or add a few shallow holes.....may help grip the polymer better to the wheel !!

    Nice job. I make knives by hand at the moment. Bevels turn out ok but belt grinder would be nice. I work at a company producing the adhesive to bond urethane to steel for rollers like this, wheels etc.. if you have any problems over time consider giving the steel a mechanical key and applying a bonding agent 👍🏻

    Pretty spiffy there Tim!!! Playing devil's advocate, I hope the surface of the pipe in contact with the urethane is "rough" enough to hold it. Not that I think it would come loose, given that you could pour it and the surface area of the pipe being relatively substantial. Murphy might come calling!!

    Very interesting. Thank you.
    A question: how durable do you think that polyurethane layer would be if a series of two or more drums were used to make a toothless 'gears'-train? If, for example,, there was a 300mm diameter spinning in contact with a 100mm to give a 3:1 stepdown ratio? It would obviously work, but how long do you think it would it last, both the surfaces on the two drums and the bonds with the metal?

    Why didnt you just forged the knife thinner? I mean, if I were you, I wouldn´t have bothered with building a suface grinder first, I would just take the time to forge it closer to the desired thickness.

    You waste to much of good steel .I pounded spring from a Studebacker down for 3 ulu knifes .It was such a chore on my little anvil but none wasted.You had you press flying as you worked the hard ass steel.Then cut it at 3 times the knife thickness you could had 3 more knifes.
    But most of the time your work amazes me .

    Excellent video. I really need a wide belt grinder wheel and it's likely to be much more expensive here in NZ than in the USA. One little point. You keep referring to a belt grinder as a surface grinder. A surface grinder is a totally different machine, much more precise and much more expensive.

    • @MrZetor
      @MrZetor 5 років тому

      Actually, the S&H fees are exactly the same to NZ as to the US. I just posted some prices as a comment to this video.
      And yes, you are correct about the surface/belt grinder definition.
