In this video I take a closer look at one of my favorite VW Group cars, the 2005 Audi TT quattro Sport 240. This example was owned by me from Nov 2014 to April 2016 and was a project car for Audi Driver magazine appearing in every issue during 2015.
This is a link to the in-car footage of chasing a TT RS at Castle Combe in October 2015. This was the Audi TT owner's club session hence the number of TTs on track

I think you’ve made a great point there at the end which can be applied right across the board now when we’re discussing our love for fast cars. Driver involvement is being lost now for cars that, with practically zero driver input and feeling, will get you from 0-100mph in silly times. But where’s the fun in that? Some of the best cars are the ones that you perhaps need to work a little harder. Anyway, great video as usual👍

Yup, I have just sold a BMW M135i with 320 BHP and now drive a Skoda Citigo with 60 BHP. The BMW might be able to get to 100 mph faster than the Citigo can get to 60 mph, but on windy country roads the Citigo is maybe more engaging, especially since I fitted Bilstein B14 coilovers. Am going for a remap to (hopefully 85 BHP) - gotta remember that this is about the power of early Mini Coopers though. The BMW could not be safely stretched on the road - I reckon 200 BHP for a car of 1.3 tonnes is about max needed for road. Toyota GT86 fits that bill in standard spec and might be the most engaging car I have ever driven.

Regarding the front brakes, on my 03 225HP TT (BEA 1.8T Engine), I also upgraded to the 334mm semi-floated rotors, but I went with the R32 calipers, mainly because they were cheaper but also lighter weight aluminium vs VR6 TT cast iron calipers. Required R32 lines as well due to different fittings. Of course also used matching blue iron pad carriers. Ironically, the thicker & larger diameter 334mm rotors are also lighter than the OE 312mm rotors due to the aluminium hub mount of the rotor. Also, do yourself a favor and run good old three prong NGK #7808 Spark Plugs (BKUR6ET = 0.75-0.8mm gap for turbo engines, BKUR6ET-10 = 1.0mm gap for non turbo engines). You'd be surprised the power and fuel economy gain just using these better, more durable copper core plugs. These were the OE plugs used in the early 058 block 1.8T's in the early B5 chassis A4's. Much, much better than the bullsh!t platinum tip plugs and a fraction of the cost. Really the power and fuel econ. gain is due to the three prong plugs taking up slightly more space within the combustion chamber, thereby raising the compression ratio ever so slightly. On mine, I have the 7 spoke, 18x7.5 inch wide wheels but I run 245/40 tires instead of 225/40 tires. Slightly larger circumference further adding to improved fuel economy and slightly improved acceleration. Also, I run 10mm wheels spacers front and 15mm spacers rear. (So for me, spacers and longer wheel bolts almost offsets the weight savings of lighter brake hardware). The slightly over sized tires and wheel spacers really gives it that aggressive sports car look/stance it should have had from the factory and a huge handling improvement especially with Bilstein Struts & Shocks. Also, turn your Idle speed adaption value up to 132 instead of 128 so the engine idles at about 780 rpm vs 740 rpm. Better off idle throttle response and much more stop n' go traffic friendly. (I should note that the ECU in my car will actually accept an idle adapt value up to 134 or 136, I think, even though vw/audi engine controllers of that vintage should only take idle adaption values in the 124-132 range. At least all other controllers I've monkey'd with over the years only accepted 124-132 values. Soooo,?????). Also, that restricting intake air pipe fitted to the air filter box which directs the induction noise into the wheel arch, take that off too. Just another touch more power gain and makes it a proper sounding turbo engine. I also removed the AC compressor and lines out of the engine bay to mimic the euro sport model, but also installed a plastic (glass fiber reinforced polyester, I believe) PS pump pulley as used on BMW M54 engines (i.e. E46 & E39 cars). My original pulley was a steel pulley which are heavy as hell for a little dinky pulley. The plastic BMW pulley is lighter weight than even the current OE replacement aluminium pulleys and off course a larger diameter. So improved pulley drive ratio and less rotational mass = more power and fuel economy gain. I should note, to do this you'll need to use the OE pulley as a jig to drill new mounting holes into the plastic pulley. The OE pulley has both the standard ZF pump flange mount holes as well as the smaller VW specific mount holes. Center hub portion of both flanges is the same. I went with the OE BMW pulley cause, well, it's a cheap 30 dollar OE production part vs an overpriced 250-300 dollar aftermarket billet aluminium pulley. Should I ever need to replace the PS pump, I'll use an OE replacement ZF pump also for a BMW E46 car and just swap the back plate of the VW group ZF pump to keep proper 4 bolt mounting. Maybe also swap the suction line fitting too.
The absolute biggest power and fuel economy gain on my car was putting on a good free flowing cat-back exhaust. I went with the good old redneck muffler shop engineering route since I started my car fixin' days as a young man in high school. Which means I ditched that ridiculous 60lbs+ muffler and used 2.5 inch pipe with a straight inline resonator from the cat back split into dual 2.25 inch tail pipes (with proper stainless tips of course). The free flowing exhaust really lets that K04 turbo spool up nice. So much so that it has significantly less turbo lag and it's always over boosting a little bit. When checking and graphing measuring block group 115 for target and actual turbo charge pressure in the ECU, during normal moderate driving, the actual charge pressure always outpaces the target values early and 200-300 millibar over. At full load in the peak rpm range when target value maxes out at 1980 millibar, the actual charge usually peaks out just below 2100 millibar, and occasionally just a touch over 2100 millibar. So basically, it's always over boosting just slightly, but never so much that it sets over boost faults.
Also, the exhaust has a nice moderate deep rumbling growl. She really does sound like a mean little b!tch, not stupid obnoxious like a 90hp honda civic with a 5 inch coffee can scraping on every speed bump.
I haven't dyno'ed the car but I'd conservatively guess the car is turning out 260HP, maybe closer to 270HP on a nice cool and humid day, but easily and consistently gets 36-38mpg's on the highway with normal easy cruising and always 20+ mpg's with in-town driving. In-town is harder to track cause sitting/idling in traffic = 0mpg's.
A few other little things like I use 10w-60 Ester base oil (RedLine brand) mainly because I like it using less than 1/2 quart of oil per 1000 miles and I plan on getting 300K miles minimum out of her (also part of the reason for slightly higher idle speed to raise idle oil pressure since manual trans cars tend to wear crankshaft thrust bearings more). Also, I use 06b109119"F" timing belt and water pump from the 2.0T direct injection engine (BPY engine).....that's another story though. Being one of the HP 1.8T's, 80° Celsius thermostats is a must.
To me, it's the perfect balance between high performance sports car and practical everyday driver, and a driver's car at that. Being front wheel biased AWD makes it really good even in 3 inches of snow with performance summer tires. Not to mention tires last 45-60K miles being such a light small car. Mine is even white, so she kinda is a little cream puff.

I fell in love with the MK1 TT 20 years back when I saw it being unveiled at the motor show as a concept. 20 years on I’m the very proud owner of a Quattro Sport 240. I absolutely love the car. It’s simple basic design is a joy to drive. Many will complain it’s based on a mk 4 golf chassis but if that bothers you there’s plenty of mods out there to improve the driving experience. For me it’s perfect and every time I sit in those pole position seats it feels like a great place to be. Great video showing what these cars are about.

The mk1 is still the best value classic on the market,
Still feels special, loves corners and that 1.8t 20v is one of the greatest engines in any modern car.
They’re unfortunately still stuck with the Hairsresser tag they’ve inherited from people who either haven’t driven them or aren’t drivers and they’re early gen1 haldex is reminiscent of an old evo if you’re friendly with your right foot.
Great video, keep up the good work!

Always loved the Mk1 TT. I had a 225 originally for about three years then a 3.2 for a similar period. I modded the 3.2 (suspension and exhaust). Post mods it looked, drove and sounded awesome. Sadly gone now in favour of something more practical but always hankered after another. The 240 Sport would "suit me sir" - but I'd probably struggle getting out of the Recaros.

Great review. :-) I had a modified TTqs, in fact it was featured in Audi driver magazine, a little before you began featuring your TTqs. I had some great times with it, and one epic drive across France, taking in mountain and coastal B roads. Eventually it was the lack of comfort that led me to let her go. Which brings me to my latest VAG acquisition, an 07 GTI edition 30. I really feel she has a similar blood line to my qs, but is so much a better all rounder, and more usable and comfortable. I remember pulling off the autoroute on my way to the south of France late at night in my qs, desperately wanting to have a bit of shut eye. And the Recaro pole position making that task nigh on impossible. I feel with my now nicely, not overly modified edition 30, I have the best of both worlds. I thought I would share this as I know you love and have owned both. Keep up the great work, really enjoy your videos.

I nearly bought one of these for my wife, about 10 years ago. During the test drive a cat ran out and smacked right into it, breaking the front spoiler. The cat died. The guy wanted me to pay but i felt his insurance should cover it. The deal fell through and we got our r32 instead, which weve still got. Always loved the design of these.

Andrew - always thought you were a car nerd 🤓 with great attention to details and this video proves it - I always thought of TT mk1 as having basic golf underpinnings and best experienced in orange as a 3.2 auto cruiser which btw you’d be great to review - mk1 model here in Oz suffered from press around the first models going off the road like badly driven 911s then ignition coil issues plus reliability issues due to our high sulphur unleaded and the 5 valve head hence I placed them in same category as other nice looks but no substance cars and now I want one :) great project car here as relatively cheap now to buy

Malcolm Another OZ bod , i just sold my 225 with 84k on the clock never had any major issues in 6 years , it was a fun drive but not using it enough and then i got GTI Clubsport which pushed further into the garage .
If serviced on time they are quite reliable , high milers are usually crap with nasty mods , always loved the look .

Anyone toying with the idea of buying one I would highly recommend.
Had my 2000 225 for over three years now and I just love it.
She's covered 96k from new with full service history, been ultra reliable and cost nothing apart from routine maintenance.
Only returns about 25 mpg but that's with a heavy right foot.
Feels really safe and secure on the road, I've taken corners at speed where lesser cars would be in a ditch. She annoys Porsche drivers who really have to push their cars to overtake me especially considering they spent tens of thousands on their vehicles and mine cost me £1500.
Insurance for me is only £200 per year. Noticed their rising in value now so if your looking for a fun, fast, reliable sports car for silly money go and get one now !

Hi David, sadly I've already sold it as need the cash due to you know what, I really wanted to take it to the next level with a video project. I've always loved the qS, bought my first 1 in 2009 and as standard they are perfect for the road. Biggest difference over a 225 is the boostyness of that engine, much more important than the extra 15 hp!

Nice to see a video review on the original TT QS. Not many people know about it. I have had all the variations of the mk1 TT and this is the best by far. All the negatives over the years about it not being fast or doesn't feel like a sports car have all been addressed in the QS. If you are a fan of the mk1 TT the QS will tick all your boxes. Becoming rare and prices are going up, not many low mileage ones left for under 11/12k.
    Great video!.

    • @sirpeepsalot1
      @sirpeepsalot1 Рік тому

Clearly the QS doesn't tick all TT fans boxes. You feel it is the best because it is the best handling, but the standard TT is a very capable car. The 3.2 is on a par with the QS for straight line speed, but the heavy engine induces understeer. But not everyone wants to go screeching around corners on the ragged edge just to save a few 1/100ths of a second ! Some people will use their car to carry small children, which the QS can't do. And some people love the style of the TT (me) but can't justify the ridiculous premium the QS commands. There are different models of TT because people have different requirements, for some the 150 bhp convertible is perfect as it provides stylish open air motoring at low running costs and purchase price. Different strokes L !

Quattro sport was the last and best but there is at least one better. I am in the process of buying it. An ABT sportsline tt limited. This model limited 1 as there was a limited 2 and a widebody model, there were only 11 made, mods are perfect. Compared to a standard Quattro which I have a 225 LHD, has bigger front and rear discs, stainless steel exhaust with four exhaust tips sticking out and a 5 speed short shifter. This one is right hand drive with 310bhp bigger Turbo as standard. I live in Japan.

The “ttrs” mk1 was the 3.2 dsg but for Audi looked better show the “3.2” badge than “ttrs”.
By the Way the top speeds is 280 like vr6 but qs doesent reach the vr6 top speed.
Qs is Just a 1.8t inside a vr6 chasis with many vr6 cosmetic enhancements, for collectors.
Sadly Audi did not released a vr6 turbo… that could be the ultimate state of art.

The TT is Still very popular in the UK so the availability of some specific Parts could Be better than in the Netherlands.
I’m looking for an originel cargo net (same as in Your car). Can you help me with some contacts who might have this original cargo net available?
    With regards, Stefan

You like your sports cars don't you! It isn't a Boxster rival, it sits somewhere between a hot hatch and proper sports car, it gives you the sleek looks of a sports car but the practicality (sort of) of a hot hatch and simple/cheap maintenance. And AWD which was unheard of in that sector at the time.

Hi Andrew, I have the same car in blue too. Where did you get the steering wheel retrimmed?

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 роки тому

That's a long story Peter! I bought a TT qS and owner said he's paid for a retrim on the wheel but it had to be sent to Poland! I wanted to sell that car quickly so fitted the wheel from mine and sold it. Then I sent that car's wheel off to Poland and waited and waited (and waited!) and literally the afternoon before an important track day I wanted to attend it came back. Luckily it was perfect but sadly I can't recall anything else. There are no doubt some stressed emails way down my inbox somewhere! Chances are it was via ebay. Must find someone in UK who is as good as for what they cost wheel retrims are awesome value. Royal Steering Wheels are a name that pops up a lot.

    • @volkswizard

TBH with those tyres it just gripped and gripped and gripped as you can see from the track video. Very different to the remapped Edition 30 I tracked next though that too was way better on track tyres. Steering feel is not great but watching the track footage back I think because it was so grippy there was huge window between grip and slip, so easy to avoid understeer, you can here the tyres squealing but far from washing out.

Why would you fit TOYO ditch finders on any car? Ok the 888R's might be ok on a dry track but no where else. Michelin is the only viable tyre option. Spend the money, the tyres WILL last longer and take more abuse and provide more grip in EVERY weather condition, compared to any other make. If you really love your car, buy Michelin.
