WRC cars from 25 years ago were much more complex due to regulations allowing it
Short gearing probably helped. 3rd gear in one car isn't exactly the same as 3rd gear in another. Acceleration comparisons in "the same" gear are always to be taken with a grain or a truckload of salt.
Not so much in a rally stage though. Current Rally1 (or even 2017 WRC+ cars) will probably eat it for breakfast. Still, that just shows how much the progress of tech in rally cars has been.
In a rally stage for sure, but I meant these cars are separated by 40 years, so this shows how powerful "vorsprung durch technik" was back in the days. Yet still it is hard to compare a comfortable daily limousine and a wild rally car, I only wanted to point out the matter of weight and driver.

I think the Quattro dint brake fast because the brakes were not up to operating temps. They aren't stock brakes. They are race brakes and don't work as well on the cold
What I think is so amazing is that a ‘regular’ (well, semi-regular) car that you can buy from the showroom can come anywhere close to ‘the Quattro’. That is amazing advances in car engineering. Also the amazingly short wheelbase of ‘the real Quattro’ (all said as the owner of a current road-going Quattro)

@@DaShitProductions in comparison to the RS3. The new RS3 has a haldex system which is controlled largely by software to limit slip. Even more so on the latest version.
In comparison the old rally car had a mechanical system.
You really think the cars of today either rally or road have less software and electronics of those 25 years ago. Really? Have you actually watched a WRC race?
@@fitnessfanatic1450 Yes I’ve watched WRC for countless years and know the regulations. Have you ever owned or done any reaearch on a late Group A rally car or early WRC? The cars back then had electronically controlled differentials, all which are banned today. Modern WRC cars have 5 speed gearboxes, 50:50 torque split, mechanical lsd’s, no abs, no traction control and no electronic driver aids. WRC cars from 25 years ago were much more complex due to regulations allowing it
Shocking results. I did launch control in my Audi earlier today. It still puts a grin on my face.
I laughed so hard on the '3rd gear' race. So much for that whole turbo lag theory. 🤣🤣🤣
there is no turbo hole in this car.
Short gearing probably helped. 3rd gear in one car isn't exactly the same as 3rd gear in another. Acceleration comparisons in "the same" gear are always to be taken with a grain or a truckload of salt.
A proof that tough engine, sututu turbo, low weight and great driver can beat high tech in a modern car. Even with manual gearbox, impressive.
Not so much in a rally stage though. Current Rally1 (or even 2017 WRC+ cars) will probably eat it for breakfast.
Still, that just shows how much the progress of tech in rally cars has been.
@@AbrahamArthemius Is it fair to compare to these newer rally cars though?
In a rally stage for sure, but I meant these cars are separated by 40 years, so this shows how powerful "vorsprung durch technik" was back in the days.
Yet still it is hard to compare a comfortable daily limousine and a wild rally car, I only wanted to point out the matter of weight and driver.
The best shift "stututu" to ever come from a car, it Just never gets old.
The most iconic rally car ever....brings so many great memories...magic 80'!
Mat you and Yianni are my favourite car reviewers and drag racers ever and I love you both so much!
The RS3 looks absolutely terrible, the cheap plastic front grill inserts are horrible - great video as always though!
That s1 sounds so dam good. Gives me chills down the spine.
lots of others trying to copy you but your's are still the best car videos by some margin matt. always look forward to Saturday drag race!😊
When that car hit the rally scene. It was game-over. Quattro really changed the game and was a "Rally Legend".
I hope you can get more cars from the Audi heritage fleet. Great vid, thank you.
The amazing thing about that rally car is that it will go just as fast as that off road too.. Oh and it sounds absolutely amazing
Making a project about the rally. Thank you carwow
If that wasn't for sluggish gearbox, the Quattro would have obliterated the RS3. It's a beast, even more when you consider the fact that it is shaped like a brick.
Hi Mat, audi quattro s1 e2 with secuential gearbox and 770hp and modern wheels vs ferrari 750 hp, very hard duel😉😄. Walter Rohrl: 215 km/h in 250 meters...
The Rally car suffers one other big issue: tires. If the Quattro had modern tyres, you can easily cut at least half a second off the quarter.
And less braking distance
@@razorr_o True, although it does not have ABS. It's useful for a rally car (at least during that period) to not have ABS, it gives the driver more control.
Exactly
The sound of the dump valve from that S1 Quatro as he changes gears, no stability controls required, put your foot on the tin and hold tight. You can imagine back in 1985, that quattro up against an Sri cavalier putting out a full 110 horses. The Audi would have been like a rocket ship.
That Audi Quattro is one of my all time favorite cars! The only one I have a Lego model for
Wow, what a race. And I haven’t even watched it yet, still on the adverts.
Considering the s1 is a car from the 80s with a manual gearbox, it did amazingly. Now it is a fully fledged rally car and if audi made a rs3 rally car now it would definitely be faster. But still, the s1 was built 40 years ago.
And they are currently detuned (the S1 made a lot more than 500hp/480Nm back in the day) to keep them in decent shape since they are heritage models.
Turbo + AWD = Happiness! Thanks for this video, guys!
Easily one of the best sounding engines ever made
Yes, polyphonic sound, it's like a chord instead of a single note.
I like the wave of videos carwow put up just when you start missing them.
Best race this channel has shown!
That Turbo sound 😳😳😳 never heard something like this before 😇 bravo gents 👏👏👏
Incredible how sport sedans nowadays put out same performances like supercars 20 years ago.
Can't wait to see what future generations will bring
Electric shit
tf you talking about if its not street legal its not comparable… compare it to a modern rallye car … difference would be huge
@@God-gp1qu he said supercars from 20 years ago, like actual supercars
@@God-gp1qu Rally cars are road legal though. You can see the number plates on the quattro
@@God-gp1qu FYI that Audi rally car is street legal, all rally cars are street legal.
Part of rallying is driving on public highways between stages 🤷♂️
Best race yet that turbo sound is amazing
I'm so glad the old school Audi made the new one take a back seat. Respect your elders.Cars from that era were proper. Thanks for this Carwow and full respect to Steve driving the Group B Audi for getting it off the line and across the finish line 1st without the help of modern technology plus being a manual box makes it a real drivers car and a driver out of you........
that’s some serious performance on that RS3 ❤️
The turbo whistles so satisfying 😍🥰
The way it takes off is insane! It is totally held back by its transmission. Imagine it with its PDK
ew
@@Spg-93 WHAT?? WHATS WRONG WITH THE SENTENCE!?
@@DA_BEAMERRRR pdk
@@DA_BEAMERRRR quattro s1 with auto tranny. just no go.
They built one car with something like PDK, there was a knob on the gear lever, you had to push it when changeing gears so you didn't have to press the clutch pedal. Walter Röhrl possessed it for years but sold it.
Loved the turbo sound of that rally car ❤️
The sound of those 5 cylinders is so, so good
the rallycar is incredible, since its so old also.. cant think of how that car felt in the early 80ies to drive :)
A view of the S1's instruments panel with Boost and rpm would have been nice!
That's a 37-year-old car. Actually, the first "Ur Quatro" was built in 1984.
Imagine how that rocketed away back then...AND with a 4-wheel drive! A game-changer that won many rallies.
FF to 3:08 to see the actual drag race
wow, and to think you can also see Steve wasn’t shifting as fast as possible… understandable. he doesn’t want to break a gearbox that’s on a 1.7M quid car 😅
Short and sweet. These videos, I've missed
That turbo flutter still sounds epic 37 years later.
After all these years... all things Audi Quattro is still my favorite Audi.
I think the Quattro dint brake fast because the brakes were not up to operating temps. They aren't stock brakes. They are race brakes and don't work as well on the cold
Mat never fails to entertain, amaze and excite us!
stop.. please... copy pasting
Not aware of the difference between 'buy'and 'by', then?
Thanks for pointing out the typo @@markfox1545, and 10/10 for smartarseness over a typo. May your life continue to be filled with such achievements...
Really nice, loved this one.
I honestly feel the RS3 is the modern spiritual successor to the Quottro S2.
Would love to see an RS3 sedan in either white or yellow with the same yellow white black decal scheme and an aero kit, it would look amazing.
Also with the 3rd gear roll on, I feel Matt underestimated the short gearing in the group B rally car having no overdrive gears like the RS3 no doubt would have.
RS3 in 3rd Quattro in 4th would of been more closely matched.
i wish they would bring back group b rally series
they will give you some overweight electric car instead :/
@@AndrewTSq electric car in group b raly??? they are obese af!!!
@@AndrewTSq Yes that sounds like a vacuum cleaner, electric cars are shite, full stop.
@@superbrit3845 and just wait for the rallycar to crash out in the forest and the lipo batterys catch fire, that you cant easily stop ..
@@AndrewTSq Totally agree fella, I just don't understand this fascination with electric cars. Lipo batteries are lethal at the best of times.
The way how this old insane Quattro Rally standing up against a new Audi RS3 shows us how impressive cars like this Quattro Rally are!
I have about 60 Lego Cars and my Quattro S1 sits in the most prime of display positions. Easily my favorite car of all time.
That S1 was so rapid it looked unreal. Lovely to watch. That S3 looked like a dull small saloon.
Rs3, smart
