Lyrics:
We were poor when I was a young'un
I don't remember ever going hungry
Daddy made sure we didn't do without
I went to school with some of these fellas
They had money and I was jealous
I didn't know then what I know now
Daddy'd say you can't judge a book by looking at its cover
It's what's inside that really matters
Daddy never was the Cadillac kind
He said some things just glitter and shine
He taught us that love was the one thing money couldn't buy
Daddy never was the Cadillac kind
I left home right out of high school
Got me a big car thought I was real cool
Cruisin' around the old neighborhood
I'd see Daddy after church on Sunday
I'd say you'll have to go riding with me someday
He just said no, I never understood
He asked me how I bought it, I told him on credit
Daddy just smiled, I'll never forget it
Daddy never was the Cadillac kind
He said some things just glitter and shine
He taught us that love was the one thing money couldn't buy
Daddy never was the Cadillac kind
It took a while but now I'm grown
I've settled down with kids of my own
The more I give them
The more they want
Daddy left us last November
I don't remember him ever looking better
All laid out in his Sunday best
I'm sure instead of all the attention
All he'd of wanted was a few words mentioned
A simple man simply laid to rest
As they drove him away in that big Cadillac
With a tear in my eye, I had to laugh
Daddy never was the Cadillac kind
He said some things just glitter and shine
But just this once,
I hope Daddy enjoyed the ride
Because Daddy never was the Cadillac kind
No, but Daddy never was the Cadillac kind

Hearing this song when your dad is gone is a whole different level of understanding, everything he ever told me was true. Once your Daddy is gone, life is never the same.
I understand how you feel, my dad left us in 2012 and my grandfather left us in 2019 and there's not a day that goes by that I don't miss them and when I listen to this song it brings me back to the lessons they taught me. Granted I may only have just turned 26 but this is the generation of country music is was raised on.
How I do understand.
This song reminds me so much of my Dad.
He was a working class blue collar guy who never had a lot of fancy things, and knew what really mattered.
Everything he did in this life, he did for me and my Mom.
I was their only child, and while they weren’t at all rich, they never denied me anything affordable.
But in everything they bought for me over the years, none of it means anything in what they gave me in love, learning, family bonding, and knowing God.
I lost them both five years ago, within six months of each other and miss them everyday, but I will forever value the legacy they gave me, and anticipate the day we are together again.
Love and miss you Mom and Dad.
I’ll give the girls a kiss from Mimi and Papa.❤️
My dad taught me so much and had so much more to teach me. He never wanted alot, just respect and a legacy he could leave behind.
TRUTH!!
I'm in tears instantly I was thinking the very same thing. Here's to both of our dads may they R.I.P
Country artists nowadays should take notes. This is what country music should be like. Telling stories that actually have meaning.
Preach!!!!!!
You got that right
Not trying to sound like pop music
RIGHT ON!!! This song carries EVEN HEAVIER meaning to those of us whose Fathers are deceased!
Now it's more like pop music instead of real country.
I lost my dad today. I remember listening to this on the radio when it was released. He never could afford a Cadillac but he spent his life working on other folks cars. I went underground to be able to buy my own Cadillac and when I finally did I was so proud of it. I’d gladly trade it for just a second with him to apologize for all my foolishness. Nothing in this world is as precious as time folks, nothing!
❤❤❤
Lost mine two days ago. It's unreal.
I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my dad when he was 47. He was a Vietnam veteran and he died of agent orange.

My dad always told me if I wash my hands before I pee I won't get my pecker dirty🤷🏼🍻

So sorry for your loss.

Love ya buddy. Lost my "pop" 6 years ago August 25th. Music was our common ground. Head up chest out. Heros die, but legends never die ;)

Dear Confederate Railroad,
Please don’t ever cave to the pressure. They can’t rip everything down.

RIP TO ALL THE GRAND DADS AND DADS WE'VE LOST!!
My grandpa died in 2019 and I who I thought was my step dad showed me this then he walked out
I lost my grandfather in 1999 and my father 20 years later. The memories are most valuable.
Just for you Poppy!!❤
Hey how are you doing?
I grew up in the coal area of the north. Poor. Chevy trucks. Five kids. Log house. This song speaks for a proud segment in our country. Let's not forget...
I can't believe that the ass holes ask Confederate railroad to change their name this shit has gone to far everything is discrimination to these fucking negors anymore I stand behind Confederate railroad one hundred percent sure
Shit the union was more for slavery than the south ever was

Lost my Dad 03/19/2022. He had just got a brand new truck. He worked most of his adult life underground in the coal mines and retired as a state mine inspector in 2005. This song hits differently now that he’s gone. I’m in tears as I write this. RIP Pops. Love and miss you always. Thank you for giving me life. ❤️
He was a badass.
Rip to your father.
Sorry for Ur loss.
My uncles & grandfathers worked in the Colorado coal mines, god bless ur dad he & many others like him built this country chasing the american dream. God bless🙏
Sorry For Your Loss My Dad Died In 2021
My dad worked for GM for 40 years and always refused to drive a Cadillac. Cadillacs were for “people that were trying to act rich with a flashy car”. He was a great man and understood the value of a dollar. No credit, just cash for his cars. Thanks for sharing this.
i work for GM and have no desire to drive a cadillac
still a great tune!
This song describes my dad to a T. My dad never owned a Cadillac, he never wanted the best clothes, he wanted to make sure his family was provided for, he was a simple man who loved God and loved his family, and wanted them best for them, often sacrificing things he'd like for his family. Love and Miss him...this Nov. will be 2 years since he passed. He was a great man who taught me so much.
Sounds like a man I would have liked to have known.

I know the heartache. My daddy just passed away November 13th. A simple soul, lovable, hardworking and loves Jesus. He always placed us first and made sure all was provided with what his hands and back could support.
While putting away some of his belongings days after the funeral this song came on. I totally forgot it was on my playlist. Lost the feeling on my legs and collapsed. We love you PapaJuan. We will always, always love you. God bless all daddies.
RIP to your old man. I am sure hes proud of you

I love the end of this video when all the workers stop and pay respects as he rides by, damn near brings a tear to my eyes to think about how these newer generations have gotten from this kind of thinking.
I know what you mean. It's like a passing funeral procession passing. I always pull over and get out and lower my head.
I agree brings tears to your eyes
I always pull to the side and I teach my boy to take his hat off if we pass one.

My daddy was definitely wasn't a Cadillac kind, he worked in a coal mine. this song rips at my heart strings
My Daddy wasn't a miner; but he worked hard in steel and wire mills, painted and remodeled houses, and did whatever was needed to make sure we never saw an empty plate!

Hats off to all the hard working dads who give and never ask for much. The good Lord knows this world needs more of you
when country was worth a damn
Hear! Hear!
You have to remember music is kind of like region in a way it can reach deep in to the heart we hope, dreams, love and fear live were some say Angles fear to tread
it can mean so much to so many but not all ways the same meaning at times
Country like rock & Roll, folk or protest songs like come out ye Black & Tans which was born out of the deaths of hell from those who live through it on both sides
Music is to the ears like a good runing engine or art to the eyes or a good meal to the nose and mouth from its taste.
The US like all nations have changed so much and will never stop changing and good music like good food & people come in all nations, walks of life from dirt poor street people to what some call Blue Bloods
May music like good people, food and days never leave this world for it would be a darker place without it. and those to come would have no hope of love, trust and dreams could die a slow death
We owe so much to those of the past from Cold miners to vets and a police officer as well to mothers & fathers who have done their best t make the world a better place
Music like life can be looked at in many ways
as they say this song to me like so may has roots deep in history and life with words of wisdom for all to see and learn from

Mine also!
My Dad was the epitome of this song. When he died in 2013, after serving four years in the US Air Force and 22 years as a city cop, he said he wanted no color guard at his funeral. I boldly answered, that wish will not be honored. The color guard from Wright Patterson UF bade paid Dad their final respect. That was wonderful! The sincere condolences they showed to my mother was worth the phone call.
Missing REAL COUNTRY SINGERS AND MUSIC💔💔💔💔❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Hello how are you doing today?
What an amazing sound and group of raw talent. It saddens me that Nashville would rather play hip hop crap instead of the true country music we all deserve to hear.
+Chris McLain that's why I haven't followed the mainstream in years. I'm in my 30s yet listen to 80s country or older
+Keith Stidham im in my 20s and still follow the old 80s and 90s country music
+mark denton Ditto, although I also like very old country like ol' Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, Ralph Stanley, or Roscoe Holcomb.
+mark denton I'm 17 and still follow all the old classics
+darron huskey im 19 still followin the classics!
Oh the Great 90s country John Michael Montgomery, Colllin Raye, Sammy Kershaw,Dwight Yoachim, I could go on forever, Joe Diffie and Kenny Rogers we will miss you forever but your music Lives on in our hearts!!!❤️
Hey how are you doing…?
Lost my grandfather in 2004, Dad is 75 now, can't imagine life without him. Amazing how the men in our lives taught us so much except how to lose that special someone in our lives.
If I could bring back my dad and my grandparents this would be them. My mom is still alive at 84 and she is the same way.
Song makes me cry every time.
A few days before my dad passed away in 2005 I heard this song on the radio and immediately thought of my dad and how similar our relationship was. So, I downloaded the song and planned to take it to his house later that evening to play it for him. Somehow, I forgot to bring the song with me and when I was talking with my dad alone I began to mention that I intended to bring a song with me that I thought he would like to hear. Before I could tell him, he took a notepaper out of the nightstand drawer and on the paper he had written, "Could you find this song and bring it with you when you come over tomorrow?" The song he was referring to was, "Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind". At the end of my dad's life, it was good to know we were both on the same page.
My dad also passed in 2005
That's a good story man. My dad is the same way, although he is still alive, and I hope he will be for many many years to come, he's only 62, I work in the family electrical contracting business, a trade my dad taught me ever since i was about 10. Although I don't think he has ever heard this song, he has told me more than once that "son, you don't ever need to make a million dollars, if you are doing what you are able to do every day and putting food on the table and a roof over your head, then you are a real man no matter what anyone thinks or says" My dad gave me the life skills, trade skills, and wisdom to provide me with the means to live a fulfilling life, and I never saw him miss a day of work in 33 years.. Im not getting rich, but I am doing well for myself thanks to him. That's worth more to me than any winning lottery ticket in the world.
Eerie!

Yea...and they let snoop dog perform. WTF
Illinois is yankee territory
The Republicans or accused of being racist, but I watched the Democratic debates just to see who was going to offer the most handouts and all I heard was white this and black that! I have never heard that in a Republican debate.
@G H I don't know of anyone in Southern Illinois who has voted for ANY of the past few Governors or the corrupt politicians from Chicago. Chicago runs illinois politically. I don't know who you think you are but you had better do your homework before making a blanket statement like that.
Man I miss these guys!!! Anyone else get Goosebumps when they hear this song?
YES! EVEN MORE so after Daddy dies! Life is NEVER the same again!
Me too!!!
My Dad for sure. His love was more important.
Hey how are you doing today?
I heard this song on the radio the other night. I couldn't believe it. I mean nothing against new country but stations need to play the classics once in a while. The classics will never die. That's what was true country.

all the miners at the end, their show of respect, makes me a little teary eyed. I have always loved this song.
when you leave like that , with the men removing their hats from their soiled faces, leathered skin, and work hardened hands, you know you have lived among the best. What more could you ask for. He had his eye fixed on other treasures not the worlds.
I am a PROUD grandson of a coal miner who worked in the mines of Pennsylvania. I never had a "daddy" in my life but my grandpap has been a source of inspiration to me cause he was a hard working man...a man's man! He's gone now but my pride for him will never diminish! God Bless all the hard working men who made this nation prosper!!!
+majic 44 the lyrics and the video reminds me of my late grand pa who worked in an american owned goldmine here in the philippines as a miner for 40 years to feed mom and her siblings. he is a poor man but made sure that they have the basic needs and made sure that his kids go to school and went to church on sunday. " be thankful always' be a good as God says and let no man fool you." he always told.. he died at 93..5 years ago.. have a blessed day

This is real Country music..... 80's 90's country was Magical
Amen, the last gasp of Nashville. It's rare these days any real country breaks through but most of what is called country today is just pop music pretending it's country.
I agree
Both my grandpas still listen to this kind of country and every time I visit them they play it and I never get tired of it.
This song came out 2 months before my grandpa passed. He'd been a mechanic owned his own garage for years. He never owned a new car. My cousins and I all decided since he never owned or probably rode in a cadillac. Robert who's 5 years older than me decided grandpa's last ride should be in his pickup not some hearse. So when we carried him out of the funeral home Robert backed his old ford p/u next to the hearse. The funeral director had a major hissy fit, we told him to back off. The funeral procession followed us to the cemetary with Robert behind the wheel and the rest of his pallbearers in the back of the truck.
Wendell Stafford wow
That generation was humble and proud but they were honest in what they said, and believed. they walked the tight rope of the Depression without a safety net and with their heads held high for themselves, their families, and Their country. You all did right by him, he’s proud of you for giving him his last ride in manner he was happy with! Good job!
No better tribute than that.
Thats respect right there brought a 😢 to my eyes when i read that
hell of a way to go bet he was a good man

This song reminds me a lot of my dad. He never drove a Cadillac. He always made sure that we always had everything that we needed. I lost him to cancer 12 years ago. I have to say that who I am today and everything that I believe in is a result of everything he taught me while I was growing up. He taught me about responsibility. It finally came unfortunately, and we laid my dad to rest Sept 6th. I've probably watched this video a dozen times since Tuesday, cause my father never was the cadillac kind either. A simple man, simply laid to rest, with family, friends, and a love that even death won't ever break. R.I.P. Dad, till we meet again!
Sorry for your loss, everything changes when your parents pass on. After that you run on the memories ❤️
🙏🙏🙏🙏
This song hits me deep right in the heart because I live and have grown up in West Virginia and my late pawpaw absolutely adored this song and was just like one of the people in this song, not one to buy a Cadillac.
My Daddy wasn't the Cadillac kind this song was him, he went home to heaven the November before this song came out 30 years ago today
You men are lucky to have a father that love and care for you. 0 - 18 I saw my father twice and we lived in the same city. I knew he didn't care. You men are lucky
my father is annoying, he calls me after midnight and tell me to come home even though im 35 years old.

Hey Danny
This Katie
I'm so sorry abut your mom
Dad never had a new vehicle or a home to call his own, we were a family of 7 kids and when we closed the door at night we were a happy family that he somehow held together with nothing to work with hardly and despite his shortcomings he was strong in so many ways when some Men would have just left , he never left us alone once no matter how bad things got. After 36 years I still think of him often.
God bless your Dad and your family.
I lost my dad last month, and am already cherishing every time that I find an old pic of him. Words of wisdom to those still lucky enough to have both parents to lean on: take as many pictures of them now while you still can. Don't find out latter how precious they really are.
my father is my hero, A Vietnam vet, i myself a vet of operations OIF and OEF. he always made sure we never did without. now im grown, and now i make sure my children have everything they need. and now i understand, the more i give them, the more they want.
