When my son and I were building his '59 Bel Air I did this mod because over the years generators and voltage regulators have caused me nothing but trouble. Last night I got to wondering just how we did it and made it a point to find a video that would jog my memory from 1994. You've done that and more! Great stuff.

Trying to get my grandma's 56 trifive charging and ever since it's last motor swap it's never been set up right, this video helped clear out most of my confusion even though the alternator is on the other side of the block(350). Thanks for this vid great help.

Thanks for watching. really hope it helped. make sure you have good grounding on the alternator as well, that will cause some good sparks if you don't.

Never had to do this, but I'm fascinated by the wiring mods. That's some old-school knowledge right there, kind of like understanding carburetors! And I don't get along with drill bits either!

well, to be sure, I did end up welding one of the holes shut and redrilling it. :p And by the time I start tuning an old carb, it is time for a new carb. :)

I could very well be wrong, but I noticed the nameplate on that generator (which you said was the second one that failed), was printed in black. That was Delco's way of I-D-ing a 6 volt generator. Its 12 volt generators had nameplates printed in red and were prominently marked "12 VOLT." That's what a generator in your car should have. If that was a 6 volt generator you showed in this vid its no wonder it failed as your car has a 12 volt electrical system. That is most likely why it failed so quickly.

I have a 58 Chev also that I was trying to do this on for the last approx. 20 years. I'm not a car electrical person and no one wanted to help me out at all so it sat for these years. Early on once anyone found out it was a four door they literally walked away. It's inside a garage at least so it's not rotting. I'll have to save this video. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment. Most of the stuff you search on doing this just over complicates it so a person throws in the towel.
I was hoping to take the head scratching out of it for folks. I person could always do more. But this gets it done.
I always thought that for a 4 door, the 58 uniquely made the back door handle blend in over most other cars of the 50's. so much chrome happening. I might just go with some of those kindigit handles down the road and blend them into the body color. (on this one at least)

@@3MonkeysGarage Never thought of that door handle idea, Look pretty neat actually. Either chrome or body colour.

I'm working on a sandrail for a customer which is powered with a mid 60s Corvair with points ign. wanna get the motor running after being parked for 20+ years but I'm here in Colorado so no rust issues just dirt and mice 💩. there was a few components missing so gotta figure this one out thee old school way...bust out the "books" and manuals to see what's required to fire her up.
ballast resistor is mounted, tryin to figure out if theres anything important that I'm missing...replaced the following
    spark plugs and wires
    rotor and cap
    points
    alternator
    starter solenoid.....
now the fun part, wiring her up for minimal accessories. Any tips or info would greatly be appreciated. I'm 38 and was born in the wrong generation, I've owned plenty of 60s classics, i have a 68 impala fastback that was supposed to be on the road this summer but too busy working on everyones rides!!
    much love and respect ....

sounds like you are pretty close on all the ignition stuff. set your gaps on points and plugs and If it hasn't been fired in that long, shoot a little oil of some kind into each cylinder. just enough to lube the rings. Turn it over by hand to make sure a valve isn't stuck open, those suck if they ram into a piston. But you are really there. set it up on top center number one, add some fuel and add some juice to the + side of the coil and hit it off.
My neighbor across the road has his 67 impala, we spent many nights rebuilding the top end , new intake and carb, headers, and its his daily driver now in gun metal gray.

-the EZ way is get a one wire alternator on ebay for around $75.
i put a 1975 454 and a th350 in my red 93 pu in my picture and i didn't know how to hook up the 93 charging wires to the old style 1975 alt.
i bought the 93 body with no engine or trans. so i used what i had laying around to build it cheap.

Is that the same for a 62c10 I have a generator I want a alternator on it

    • @3MonkeysGarage

seems like it would be the same. I don't have one handy to look at, but any one with a three wire generator would work the same.
