I went to UofA and took a jazz appreciation class one semester. Every week we had to do either one or two live jazz reviews. This was not as difficult as it sounded because there was always some kind of live jazz show going on there. I think I remember being told by our professor that the city at that time had the nation’s largest jazz society, beating out even New Orleans.
I pretty much hated being a student there, but when I stepped away from campus life, parts of Tucson felt pretty cultured. Some incredible restaurants, a pretty good music scene, and a few bookstores that I loved. Beautiful town too. Of course, there were other parts that felt like the land time had forgotten. The Simpsons also used to poke fun at the town (Matt Groening graduated from UofA). Again, couldn’t stand being a student there, but I’ve never really understood why the town itself has been the butt of so many jokes.

I live in Tucson. Our city council is stupid, and the county supervisors are almost as bad.
They live in a dream world.
The pavement on our streets is a wreck, but we have nice programs for graffiti artists. They need to pass a bond to pay for street repair. Imagine needing to get a lone to do foreseeable repairs on your car.
Crime isn't nearly as bad as larger cities. We don't have a subway, but we have never seen a Tucsonan shove someone into traffic. There are shoplifters here, but none have ever gone through a store filling a bag with stuff and leaving like Santa Claus.
Major businesses don't typically move here. And of the few who have come here, most leave. Pay is much less than Phoenix.
Winters are mild, summers are hot but with low humidity and relatively few bugs.
We have a lot of retired people.
We get about half of our water from the Colorado river. Lake Mead is nearly dry, and Phoenix gets their water before we get ours. I think this is a genuine problem, but it isn't talked about. Our long term future doesn't look secure to me.
Other than those things, Tucson is about the same as any other city in the country. Putting the water problem aside for a minute, I'd take our other problems any day before I'd swap them for the problems they have in San Francisco, New York, Detroit, and a few other cities.

In Phoenix, the attitude of drivers is "I can go 20+ over the speed limit as long as I loosely follow all of the other rules" and in Tucson it's "I can run stop signs and red lights as long as I go as slowwwww as possible." I live in Tucson and this is actually true lol. A bunch of people from different states come here for the winter to get away from the snow in their home states. So the diversity of crazy people is insane lol.

I can't have been the only one who thought this was about Peter going to Italy.
But based on his reaction to visiting New York and San Francisco, if they had sent him to Tuscany, he would have come back as Dr. Manhattan.
