In the 1950's my family lived in the flat above the shop. Dad owned the shop where you are. It was a wee dairy. He created a bit of a stir by offering a Sunday Special consisting of a pint of icecream and a tin of peaches for one shilling. He got the after church crowds from First Church and St Johns.

hi from New Zealand Kiwi ,thoes pork pie's your talking about look fantastic and i bet they taste fantastic too but pies here in NZ are genrally just your standard pastry pie ,excellent pie though but not the same as your pork pies
When your in Southland NZ next, stop at Clutterbuck’s 4 square store on the main road in Mataura and try Mataura mutton pies. They are to die for made with hot water pastry with a high crisp edge around the top.
🤤🤤🤤🤤 I’ve marked it on the map! Thanks so much for the recommendation mate- they sound epic! Thanks for watching and commenting, hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Sheena

@@ChasingaPlate my mistake...its the Paris Bakery in Amberley...sorry. Get your molars into their sausage rolls as well. Without reservation they are #1.
OMG to be able to make something this well... must be an absolute buzz. Bloody well done James!! Unfortunately, I'm stranded here in Oz, where a steak pie likely means mince. How do you get the steak pie gravy so dark & sticky? And for the chicken, I guess you use thighs... and thymme... ? I guess no chance of getting my hands on the recipes, just for my personal use and between you & me?? 🤔
Wow! This was interesting and mouth watering. Works of art! So reasonable in price for the high quality you get. So jealous of you two getting a bag full❤️

From a Brit who has started making all his own pies and pasties, hence why you’ve popped up in my recommendations, 6 NZ$ is approx. £2.80 in British Pounds, which seems reasonable for a deep filled handmade pie. Now to check out your other vids.
@@ChasingaPlate Hey, I’m a simple bloke, wrap pretty much any meat in pastry and I’m happy. You should look up the traditional Cornish Pasty, that’s my current go-to. Hoping to get out there soon, my sister lives in Tauranga and your latest Auckland vid has me drooling.

Yes Pies are very popular in Australia. But honestly good pies (we have plenty of average Pies in most convenience stores and bakeries) are hard to come by. Being made from scratch like these ones with slow cooked filling these sure are special.

You kiwi's sure make a good pie the whole process looks delicious, just wondering are traditional hot water pastry pork pies popular down there?
They’re not common Martin, I remember years and years ago you could buy them at the deli counter at the supermarket but I don’t believe they’re a thing anymore. We’ll have to head to the UK to get our fix! Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed this one 😄 Cheers, Sheena
hi from New Zealand Kiwi ,thoes pork pie's your talking about look fantastic and i bet they taste fantastic too but pies here in NZ are genrally just your standard pastry pie ,excellent pie though but not the same as your pork pies
I love the name. That alone would inspire me to buy one of their pies.
😂 it’s a great name! Luckily the pies stack up too. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
That's the idea, heel face. It'd get me in the gaff !
I forgot about mutton pies, been out the country far too long, really making my mouth water thinking about them.
chur I was in clutterbucks todayl! mean as
Wow...... Clutterbuck's still going strong? Does the family still own it? The Clutterbuck's are invaders from Gore though, just sayin'. I live in China now, but I used to live no more than 100 metres from that store, went there every day.
@@Storm4155 No Ken and Allen Clutterbuck sold it to a young couple about four years ago .And the Clutterbucks retired to Gore. Tho the store is till called Clutterbucks and is just as busy as ever.
Kiwi here living broad. I miss kiwi pies so much. Whenever I go home the first thing I do after leaving the airport is to find the nearest pie shop to indulge. YUM!!!!
They’re something we always miss too! There’s something special about a kiwi pie! Thanks for watching Philip. Hope you enjoyed the video. Cheers, Sheena
My stomach actually growled when I saw the opening shot of those pies coming out of the oven.
😂😂😂 my stomach growls every time I see the thumbnail for this video. The pies are SO great! Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
Good Sunday morning, I came across your channel and love it. I make lots of pies, an expat from South Africas living in Huntsville, Texas for the past 33 years. I have just subscribed to your channel.
Thanks mate. So glad you’re enjoying the videos. Your pie making sounds great! Thanks so much for watching. Thomas
World rankings...after 70 years of "getting in amongst the pies"...#3 Millys in Mataranka Australia.#2 Fat Bastards.#1 French Bakery Amberley Canterbury
Love this Bruce! 😍 We were in the French Bakery on this road trip but we bought croissants rather than pies! We’ll have to make sure we get back and give them a go! Thanks for watching and commenting on this one. Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate my mistake...its the Paris Bakery in Amberley...sorry. Get your molars into their sausage rolls as well. Without reservation they are #1.
@@bruceogilvie8553 got it 😍🤤 Don’t mind a good sausie roll 😋
OMG to be able to make something this well... must be an absolute buzz. Bloody well done James!! Unfortunately, I'm stranded here in Oz, where a steak pie likely means mince. How do you get the steak pie gravy so dark & sticky? And for the chicken, I guess you use thighs... and thymme... ? I guess no chance of getting my hands on the recipes, just for my personal use and between you & me?? 🤔
hilarious name for a store! and the pies themselves look great! thanks for sharing the video, guys
💛✨
Isn’t it great?! 😂 mmm they’re such awesome pies. Thanks for watching and commenting mate, so glad you enjoyed it! Cheers, Sheena
I eat two at a time! First the Farmhouse Chicken followed by the Seafood. They don’t scrimp on the prawns either
So good right! Is Fat Bastard your local? Thanks heaps for watching. Thomas
Wow! This was interesting and mouth watering. Works of art! So reasonable in price for the high quality you get. So jealous of you two getting a bag full❤️
We reckon too Jo! They’re a great price for a food made with so much love. I want one right now! Thanks for watching and commenting Jo, hope you enjoyed this video. Cheers, Sheena 😘
Those pies look delicious and I'm hungry for a few of them, I'd eat 10 in one day

Looks like classic Invercargill weather.
Perfect pie weather 🙌 Thanks for watching. Thomas
You have some massive self control not eating three of everything 🤤🤤 those look soooo good 😍😍 love it!!!
😂 literally regretting not eating all of them!!!
From a Brit who has started making all his own pies and pasties, hence why you’ve popped up in my recommendations, 6 NZ$ is approx. £2.80 in British Pounds, which seems reasonable for a deep filled handmade pie. Now to check out your other vids.
Awesome mate! What’s your specialty? Thanks for watching- hope you can get here one day and give these pies a taste- we love them! Cheers, Sheena
Love ❤️ your show , you guys are fantastic . Different cultures & mouth watering food to die for . Made me so hungry , Especially when I saw the Koura ( crayfish ) the Paua & the Kina , the ice cream . Really made me home sick now . Thank you for sharing for sharing show absolutely fabulous 💕💕

As Meatloaf sang..... Two outa three aint bad.... NZ is beautiful and the pies are good......😜
Sounds like for home cooking you can use puff pastry for the top tho i wonder what i could use for the bottom.
I often just use a rough puff pastry for both top and bottom and it works a treat! Thanks for watching this one mate, hope you enjoyed it 😍 Cheers, Sheena
My nephews and nièces who have lived in Sydney for many years everytime they came back home we go straight from the airport to the bakery before covid times lol 👍🏻NZ pies the best of the best alrite!💯
Haha wooo hooo! Love the passion for pies here. I have a friend living in London and every time they come home to nz their parents meet them at the airport with a pie. So good. Thanks so much for watching this one! Cheers, Thomas 😀
What a name " fat Bastard Pies " absolutely love it
So great right?! Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
There are many good pie makers in New Zealand. We are a just good at making the pie. Even home cooks make a good pie. Lol

Wannaroo markets have some bloody good pies, Malaysians run it,but they use Flaky Pastry for the tops, really good pies, closest to Kiwis pies I can find.

At 6:32 what is the thing that used to mold the dough?
They’ve popped a huge sheet of pastry from the dough sheeter onto the pie tins- hope that’s what you’re after! Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
Check andersons mince pie.. classic
Awesome. I am curious what the name of that type of pie pan that you roll over the top to cut, is actually named. Does that type of pan have a name? Anyone know? Where would you get something like that in the usa?
Hi Phil! Thanks for watching! It was kind of like a giant rolling pin- is that the one you mean? Hope you enjoyed the video! Cheers, Sheena
@@ChasingaPlate Yes, the pans were basically sharp edges and cut the dough. Also, are you sure the creator used vegetable shortening and not butter? It looks like butter to me. Anyway, it was a great piece of yummy reporting.
That Steak Pie is giving me the goosebumps, would love to see a complete recipe video from start to end, including the filling!
So good right?! Can’t go giving away secret recipes 😜 Thanks for watching! Cheers, Sheena
Are pasties a thing in NZ? Could be essentially the same filling and pastry but easier to eat on the street?
Thanks for watching. You find them here but they’re not that common. A pie is pretty easy to eat on the street. Cheers. Thomas
I know witch way I’ll be heading next trip to New Zealand 🇳🇿

It was worth the wait!! Drooling. Do you have pies like that where you are?
@@brilliantbutblue nope
@@brilliantbutblue do you?
Yes Pies are very popular in Australia. But honestly good pies (we have plenty of average Pies in most convenience stores and bakeries) are hard to come by. Being made from scratch like these ones with slow cooked filling these sure are special.

Best pies I've found here in west Sydney is at St Marys called the Kai Drop which is actually run by kiwis too

I'm a Kiwi from Aotearoa, New Zealand. These pies are called lunch. If you are a tradie, like me, they are called morning tea. I eat four a day. Steak and Cheese unless I can find a mutton pie. I would kill for a mutton pie with pepper.

No argument from me those pies look pretty darn good!! What a labour of love as you have shown in so many vids from this NZ series. Hand made from scratch and full to the brim with quality fillings. I was drooling as you squeezed the pie and the meat oozed out and the colour of the slow cooked beef, mouthwatering. Sheena l cant decide did you want to jump into the pie warmer as you where so excited or just trying to warm up as it was such a miserable looking day. 🤣. The horse in the intro ❤
