Jinnah Contradictions in light of Sir Syed | Part 2

  • Part 2: Jinnah's contradictory statements on secularism and an Islamic system must be seen in the context of Syed Ahmed Khan's radical naturalist reinterpretation of Islam. Its central characteristic was its brutal criticism of Taqlid (which was continued by Iqbal). The Aligarh School not only deeply influenced the intellectual milieu of the Muslim League of the 1940s, it provided the intellectual justification (right or wrongly) for reconciling Islam with modernity, secularism, democracy, and scientific rationalism.
Hence, to turn Jinnah's statements into a justification for theocracy totally misrepresents how opposed he was to the Taqlidi ulema of his times. In contemporary Pakistan, however, when we talk of the imposition of an "Islamic system", it is sadly not Sir Syed interpretation of Islam that we refer to (most of the public is not even familiar with this interpretation). But the interpretation of the opponents of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. It is the taqlidi and other orthodox ulema whose interpretation of Islam is put forward and sadly also accepted as the genuine Islam.
Have Syed Ahmed Khan, Iqbal and Jinnah lost in the grand project of reforming the Islamic intellectual tradition? Your thoughts...

I have always been amazed at the quality of researchers in LUMS. Such detached intellectual analysis of our past is absolutely necessary. When we study someone else's ideas, we do not immediately have to either support them or criticize them. Thank you, Dr. Rahman, for this analysis.

Secularism is solely a Islamic concept even at the time of prophet (pbuh). Jinnah followed that kind of secularism, neither theocracy imposed by mullah nor extreme secularist views like Mustafa Kamal and other Western religious phobe leaders.

Thank you very for making an intellectual video with reference.
But at 21:55, the claim is made that Quaid-e-Azam's interpretation of Islam is based on the Islamic interpretation of Syed Ahmed Khan, but no reference was provided.
Similarly, at 23:19, Quaid's response was negative to scholars who were following TAQLEEDI approach towards religion.
If possible, please provide above mentioned references as it is the main part and climax of both the videos.

sayed ahmed khan and jinnah were highly secular and progressive..Md. Ali Jinnah was considered as the ambassador of Hindu Muslim unity in the 1920s.. But what made him change his mind is still a mystery. And not only Islam extremists but also Hindu extremists believe that darwin's theory is false . by the way, i am from Orissa and i really like your interpretations.

You very clearly said in part-1 of your video that when Jinnah referred to Islam as a system for Pakistani state, he was influenced by Sir Syed and it would clarify the apparent contradiction in Jinnah's speeches. You did not touch upon. let alone prove, as to how Jinnah's Islamic content was informed by Sir Syed. Did Sir Syed ever talked about Sharia as basis of the constitution ? Or Sir Syed wanted a state based on Islamic Principles ? Where is the link between Sir Syed and Jinnah's speeches ? It means Jinnah talked about Islam based on his own understanding developed over the years.

While I admit this is an amazing interpretation of islam, I do see a few issues. 1)Thinking there is no difference between science and quran, and curtailing a philosophy in that way does not solve certain issues. Also, questionng Hadith and praising quran based on the idea that Hadihs were written later, makes the time, quran was written, auspicious and a fixed point in time. Which is a dangerous idea and that essentially imploded 2)The contradictions Jinnah had can mean another thing, as an enlightened "british" he wanted to rule a place, which again is a problem.
Personally I think Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah had tons of issues and at the end Punjabis and Bengalis mainly had to bear the burden. We Bengalis are still bearing the burden in a fascist regime in the form of NRC!
I would like to hear from you about a few other things 1)How to interpret stalin 2) A note on partition 3) A note on Gandhi and Nehru 4)Why Pakistan became an islamist state and India is becoming a fascist nation 4) Is there any way we can achieve peace in the subcontinent, like say EU 5) What do you think about "On the eastern question" and Lenin's comment on Pan-islamism?
I love your videos and I seriously wish I had a chance to sit in your class, and that is one of the reason, I would be hating partition :-\ If only India and Pakistan had free passage and I could sit in your class without having to worry about a visa!

Majority of Muslims Opposed the Partition of India
The majority of Muslims opposed the division of India, which is evident from the fact that most Muslims ultimately did not migrate to Pakistan and stayed back in their homeland (India). Muslim leaders who opposed the partition of India continue to be ignored or misrepresented, which confirms that a false history is being taught.

I think when Quran says "Who believe in the unseen will be successful in Akhirah". So why people relate it to science.
Science deals with matter only not with the unseen things.
Islam never rejects science and science never discussed religion.
So these are different terms people can go on with both with no issues.

Occam's razor Dr.Rahman; the cleaner explanation is that the contradiction lies within Sir Syed's thought as well, & the simple reason is that his priority was Muslim loyalty to the British within a separation from Hindus, not a consistent political philosophy.

In Pakistan, the foundation for fundamentalism, extremism, and hate towards non-Muslims was laid by the All-India Muslim League. If you are unsure on this point, read the types of slogans that the Muslim League used and what their leaders and supporters stated to gain support for the partition of India (and creation of Pakistan). Pakistanis still shy away from accepting the truth. -Nasim Yousaf, November 07, 2018

I would to comment on symbolic representation of Quran the idea given by Syed Ahmed Khan.
Sir, you have mentioned at 6:17 that Syed Ahmed Khan started looking at Holy Quran from new perspective, that is symbolic representation of Holy Text.
I found this point interesting so thought I should share it with you and learn from your feedback/ suggestion/ comment.
The idea of viewing Holy Text as symbols particularly prepositions or descriptions is first started with Charch who were Kristian Philosophers who were unable to philosophically prove the existence of God so during the Reynaisaaance period. So, they realised that philosophical ideas adopted from Greeeek Philosophy is not going to help them prove philosophical or logical basis of their religion so they finally came up with symbolic representation of Holy Text. It helped Charch during Reynaisaaance period to convince that religion is still relevant.
Syed Ahmed Khan got this idea from them and used similar interpretation of Islam. So, it was not a new approach. It was done previously couple of centuries ago by Kristian Preeest Philosophers. However, it doesn't mean there is no symbolic text in Holy Quran. It is there to but exceptional (which is also supported by intellect) not general. Quran is a book of Haq (reality), not symbolism.
So, it was natural for scholars at that time and at this time, to show their response because it was coming from Kristian school of thoughts, may be modern interpretation of Holy Bybal.
    This is how I understand.
Wanted to share background of symbolic representation of Holy Text.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Community also believes in the same ideology of Islam regarding the role of religion and state.
    For reference:
"Similarly, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is the only Islamic organization to endorse a separation of mosque and state."

If you listen to the Q&A with the 4th caliph of AMC you can understand other concepts of Islam which are more or less similar than what you mentioned but there is a significant difference i.e the second coming of Messiah and arrival of Imam Mehdi.
Ahmadiyya Muslim Community played a vital role in the creation of Pakistan and Allama Iqbal's use to follow the same school of thought as well. Quaid-e-Azam also use to take suggestions from Ahmadiyya communities second caliph through Sir Zafarullah Khan.

All the he things he said had a source but in the end when he establishes the link of sir syed with Jinnah was totally lacking in source. In my opinion, it is his own belief that Jinnah was influence by Syed But real thing is Jinnah was perfect Politician and good politician knows how to engages his followers. After the two nation theory a lot of people have doubts so he disseminated his messages according to his audience. He praises about Islamic principles and motivated those having strong Islamic ideologies and as sub continent is diverse in nature, so he tried to influence other communities in the light secular ideas... So I guess we shouldn't give any wrong interpretation to his ideologies
