Bozzio isn’t just a drummer, he is a true percussionist . Either you enjoy his mind unleashed or you don’t, or you keep listening until you understand. As a drummer I love seeing this genius do what he does.
Terry Bozzio is one of few drummers in the world who can make a kit like this sound good! Earthy, electronic, trashy, eerie, melodic, etc. Not your ordinary kit!
It takes a really powerful mind to make something which is purely conceptual turn into actual musical work. All cymbals? I imagined a constant noise, but this is quite interesting. Terry Bozzio is an awesome percusionist.
People don't understand Terry Bozzio. His "solos" aren't typical drum solos, because they are actually structured and thematic. However, music by nature is structured and thematic. His solo work is more akin to percussion solos, which I suppose a lot of drummers can't appreciate because it's really a different genre. I'd bet those kinda people couldn't appreciate classics like Xenakis' Psappha, either. Anyways, I can totally understand the people who don't enjoy listening to this solo. That's their opinion. But the man is a genius musician and innovator, and I personally think this is beautiful to listen to.
he is a poor figure in music... Inovator? he didn't invent any damn thing. It's a mess-around on milions of drums and cymbals and anything else... but he created a big image out of this. That's the only thing what he invented. How to become a big name with under average musicianship and skills... Sorry, but that's how it it. But you should continue to enjoy. no offense...
Emanuele Stefanutti I think at one point he was really incredible and had insanely good musicality and then he started going more and more downhill as his ego got bigger.
Majestic Dragon i don’t agree. He has abandoned his comfort zone to create a solo project carreer, instead of messing arround with “commercial” music... i see a true commitment and the will to experiment... and i think this was not an easy path to walk through, even for a big name like T. Bozzio.
@@brunch1691980 im sorry you've seen an all cymbal set before? The independence between his feet and hands is amazing. Playing that ostinato pattern on the bass drums while soloing freely with his sticks is incredibly difficult. He makes it look like child's play.
When i started drumming terry used to bore me to death!! all i heard was random spasms of somewhat creative patterns and rhythms never blew my mind, a couple years later this is one of the most profound drum sessions I have ever witnessed, oh gawd I'm one of THOSE drummers now X)
Honestly, I thought this was just going to be a joke. I gave it a chance and I regret having the thought. I didn't think all these cymbals and stacks could sound so authentic and musical. This just left me in awe.
Who else but the one and only Terry Bozzio? Genius! It's one thing to have the idea of an all-cymbal setup, but to actually go through with it is something else entirely. Must be nice to be able to say, "I wanna do so and so," and have a company like Sabian or whoever to say, "Your wish is our command." I know it's not that easy but there's a little truth to that I bet.
First of all most people know what they are getting into when they watch a Bozzio solo. I was actually very impressed with how entertaining this was. Since when have you every heard an "all cymbal drumset"? Haters are going to hate, but he is is solid as hell. I'd rather watch someone being unique than someone just playing the album version of a song on their ipod. Unique-ness....that's why you're watching an "all cymbal" drumset solo in the first place.
I agree.... Bozzio is one of the best things to happen to the "experimental drum" world EVER!!!! This man can make it sound like there's 5 drummers, and 3 other musicians in the same room at once. Show me a drummer who can do that on a 5 or 7 piece kit... DAMN I LOVE BOZZIO!!!
You saying people can't be creative with their drum covers? Honestly, drum covers give you the most opportunities to be creative with the song to add your own fills in here and there
Very creative performance. I can never get bored with the cymbal-only kit because it's Terry Bozzio. I really enjoyed the percussive performance of contemporary music and the drum-like playing with a lot of muted cymbals. Thank you very much.
This was absolutely awesome! I remember many years ago watching a Max Roach solo using only a high-hat. Terry has taken that to a whole new level. This is not your typical drum solo. I would have agree with one commentator saying that it is more of the quality of a percussion solo. You would have to developed a more open sophisticated and broaden musical mind to appreciate this level of creative genius. Keep up the great work Terry!
I don't really care what anyone thinks about Terry Bozzio, this is cool as shit. Props to Sabian and Terry for an amazing demonstration of this concept.
I have been listening to Terry play for 38 years, first with Zappa to Missing Persons to the note playing drummer he is today and today he is the best at what he does which is play notes and beats together at the same time and play a song for you
i, for one, am very happy that weirdos like bozzio are out there in the world just being their weird selves. and aside from that, do the haters think bozzio gives a sh*t? he's playing over 20,000 dollars worth of cymbals, and he probably not only got them for free, he has a team to set them up! haha. who's laughing? bozzio. you can try to knock him down, but it's patently obvious that the haters are way more boring than him. also, his chops aren't as good as thomas lange, buddy rich, gene krupa, jojo mayer or benny grebb, but they're still pretty f*cking decent!
Wow, can't believe I've never seen this before. Back in the day, Bozzio was an impressive kit player. His kits were innovative, but the world mostly saw him as a monster drummer. I can't decide if what he's playing is more impressive or the instrumentation. I'm very impressed. The amount of knowledge of percussion beyond just technical knowledge or skill blows me away. He has probably carefully engineered every sound that comes out of this kit. So he not only knows what he wants, but he knows enough about random ass metal percussion things to find exactly that. And then he lays down a very inventive groove that utilizes it all.
TheApostleofRock He is renowned - or if you're his drum tech, notorious - for tuning EVERYTHING to the gnat's ass. I would not be surprised if he tunes the cage, just in case. Like you say, he lays down a groove that takes advantage of all of it.

Agree, Terry has nothing to prove, as a solid player on an acoustic kit, his track record speaks for itself, Jeff Beck will tell you, this guy is one of the most experimental, drummers of the modern rock era.
There are only a handful of drummets(ok, maybe more than a handful) that can actually make the drum set sound like more than a drum set. I first heard Terry's playing when I was 14 years old in high school. I'm 46 now, and every video I find of his that I haven't seen still blows me completely away. A true "master" percussionist.
@Alan Brown No, if it were boxes and pans, technically they wouldn't be a drum set, they would be a percussion set. He's right, this isn't a drum set, it's a cymbal set.
I saw the headline 'Terry Bozzio's All Cymbal Drum Set' and was expecting this to be a load of crash bash nonsense... but actually, this is incredible. Rhythmically and sonically amazing.
I'm sorry but I just don't get it. His actual playing is just... dull. Yeah sure lot's of cool sounds but there's not much rhythmic feel, no cool syncopation, nice rudiment usage, polyrhythm or anything... It's like he's replaced quality with quantity. He's playing is technically easy and musically boring IMO. I don't get it at all. What am I supposed to like, besides "gawd look at all the cymbals"?
Yeah, the gongs are a bit to overwhelmning in the recording to hear the ostinati he plays on them. Other than that I think it is highly musical what he plays. He created a whole now monster, adjust your ears or leave it. Are you in general fan of bozzio, or do you dislike his other solo stuff as well?
Andreas I'm not a big fan of his solo stuff but in a band setting I find him amazing. I'm not trying to take him down, and I'm sure it's me and not the music, I'm just struggling to understand what I'm supposed to appreciate. I love complex rhythms, nice grooves and technical drumming, but to my ears this isn't complex. technical or groovy, it's just "a lot".
@Johannes Wiberg: well, you’re missing that the cymbals here (and drums in other videos) are tuned to different pitches, so it’s not just about rhythm and timbre here, it’s also about pitch. He’s basically playing (*creating) an entire tune on a kit, not just a “drum solo”.
I love this. Love this. Love this! Terri is one of my favorite set drummers, because he's always pushing the boundaries of drum set construction and sound sources. He has excellent technique, but there plenty of players who can match him technically. What sets him apart is his fearlessness in trying new things, his creativity and his killer groove.
For me it's like hearing an acoustic Drum solo for the first time again that sounds like an electric drum solo. Terry really is one of the masters of all things percussion, Simply amazing plus its melodic with emotion and attitude
I've never been a big fan of Bozzios style, but this was a unique idea. the dampened cymbals for toms was pretty cool. what drummer wouldn't want to have this kind of money to just throw away on a whim like this? lol
I agree with you about his style. When I saw this title, I thought, "here he goes being 'artist' again," but when I listened to it I had to keep listening.
Ninja Flips I don't think anyone would really consider a ton of cymbals as, "thrown away" money. It's money well spent. These cymbals can always go right into any drum configuration that a composition would require.
Terry is always pushing the envelope. I prefer the sound and style of a small drum kit to the massive kits he’s been playing, but no one can deny his originality. And he’s very skilled.
Great way to demo nearly every cymbal Sabian makes. Pretty ingenious. I like that marching band cadence he rolled in there in the middle. Nice groove with that.
I am so grateful to have seen him perform live with Zappa Plays Zappa. He's one of the most skilled and creative percussionists of all time, no question.
brilliant for doing this ! ! ! never been done, but after listening a few times . . . i have to admit its not for my ears. Still BRILLIANT for doing this
Anyone who says Terry is a crap drummer has no idea what this man can do. Love to see any one of the Bozzio haters get behind any one of his set ups and challenge them to lay down something that's remotely interesting.
While I'm not the biggest fan of Terry (I've drifted in and out of his work, so I can't say he's NOT influenced me somehow haha), this is freaking amazing.
One of my true heroes ! What an amazing person, crazy good musician, innovator. Amazing story , all of those cats standing around watching are actually just the guys who set up the kit !! (Wah wah wah waaaaahhhh).
I've seen Terry a few times. His performances/demonstrations are inspirational. Last time I saw him he was using the black cymbals up top..He gave my daughter (teenager at the time) a pair of his sticks too. Such a mellow guy.
what a Performance!! inspiring, and demoralizing! This is one of the best performances I've seen. The removal of the drums seems to have allowed and forced him to create something entirely new, while relying on some of his past motifs. Love it!!
I've seen this video a few times now and I love it. It reminds me of a Gamelan or some sort of far-east prayer music or something. Not using those giant china stacks until 12 minutes in makes them all the more impactful.
Just superb. TB is constantly taking playing 'the drums' to new levels. Great skill & use of dynamics, but also so creative in what is mechanically possible with the humble drumkit.
Just enjoy the man's genius! He is an artist....I have read so many rude comments. I have the Largest Drum Set in the World and I love his Cymbal setup. I like better whats he's doing than what many of you are NOT doing....Be classy....speak the truth...When you see something cool...give it some respect.....All the best...Dr. Mark Temperato
Guy is a amazing. You should see the modern drummer piece he did where he plays triplets between his bass foot and right hand while playing a completely independent drum pattern with his left hand.
Bozzio isn’t just a drummer, he is a true percussionist . Either you enjoy his mind unleashed or you don’t, or you keep listening until you understand. As a drummer I love seeing this genius do what he does.
You nailed it. The haters don't understand, and unfortunately some won't ever get there.
If Terry was lost on a desert island, he'd quickly fabricate a huge kit out of shells, fish bones, coconuts, & driftwood.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_island
Mount Desert Island would be a hip place to do something like that. www.acadiamagic.com/MountDesert.html
so would i
He only dies if he stops drumming for more than 12 hours.
And it would probably sound better than this garbage.
"No, you don't understand. I *really* like cymbals."
"Oh.
*Oh god no*."
DarkFlameSquirrel did anyone get a final count of how many freakin cymbals there are in this craziness??
Terry Bozzio is one of few drummers in the world who can make a kit like this sound good! Earthy, electronic, trashy, eerie, melodic, etc. Not your ordinary kit!
As far as I know Mr. Terry Bozzio worked incredibly hard to devellop his talent. And that deserves all respect.
perfect ! exactly love him just look at his resume...it speaks volumes.
🤣🤣🤣
It takes a really powerful mind to make something which is purely conceptual turn into actual musical work. All cymbals? I imagined a constant noise, but this is quite interesting. Terry Bozzio is an awesome percusionist.

Love his playin'!!!! :)
As always, Terry transcends the instrument.
brilliant for doing this ! ! !
never been done, but after listening a few times . . . i have to admit its not for my ears. Still BRILLIANT for doing this
All hail Terry Bozzio..
Anyone who says Terry is a crap drummer has no idea what this man can do. Love to see any one of the Bozzio haters get behind any one of his set ups and challenge them to lay down something that's remotely interesting.
He is a great drummer. Nobody can deny that. This, however, is a dumb gimmick that sounds like garbage.
These cymbals have so many different timbres. It’s not possible for me to agree with you that it sounds like “garbage”.
Who the fuck ever said Terry Bozzio is a crap drummer?! 😂😂😂
Just for all the haters like fiddles withnippless, this guy is in the top 50 drummers of all time in the modern drummer list, so think before talking
David H , key word...drummer. Unfortunately, this isn't drumming. This is like miked up dripping water.
You think "modern drummer" is a reliable source? This guy is a huge advertisement for all the products the push. That's why they like him.
I think its way cool and different is good. What a boring world, if ya always did the same thing all the time. Bozzio kicks ass in my book.
what a Performance!! inspiring, and demoralizing! This is one of the best performances I've seen. The removal of the drums seems to have allowed and forced him to create something entirely new, while relying on some of his past motifs. Love it!!
I WANT ONE OF THOSE HUGE CYMBALS!!!
I've seen this video a few times now and I love it. It reminds me of a Gamelan or some sort of far-east prayer music or something. Not using those giant china stacks until 12 minutes in makes them all the more impactful.
Ryan Masecar gamelan is Indonesian traditional music
One of the best drumming innovators of our time.
I've never been a big fan of Bozzio, but this was really, really good. Enjoyed that immensely :)
@@commercialssuckbutts7464 how many dudes on 5 piece kits can do complex polyrhythms?
Still my all-time favorite drummer! The dude is a beast!
Real fly paper for internet trolls this vid... i dug it myself...especially near the ending with the China crashes.
Love it!!
This is such a neat concept. Sounds almost like an electronic set!
Just superb. TB is constantly taking playing 'the drums' to new levels. Great skill & use of dynamics, but also so creative in what is mechanically possible with the humble drumkit.
This is cool!!!
196 Travis Barker fans.
206 people who doesn't enjoy a freak show.
hahahahaahh XD
someones jelly
Only ten dorks in 3 years. impressive.
That was just insane.
Sabian and Terri have a bright idea! Pure cymbals sound!
Great drummer & a great musician!!!!! You can give Terry a shoe-box & a pair of #2 pencils & he would make art out of it! Simply incredible.
this is cool, something like organic rhythm machine :)
You should see the modern drummer piece he did where he plays triplets between his bass foot and right hand while playing a completely independent drum pattern with his left hand.
i actually dig it !
"Heavy Metal"
Totally awesome, this is the real percussive spirit.
Absolutely amazing
