This dance is called the Taruna Jaya ("Victorious Youth") and is traditionally performed by girls around this age. I studied Balinese dance in college and on the island itself learning directly from the Balinese people, and they tell you that this is one of the most technically difficult of all the Balinese dances. Not just the length, but the stage presence, the balance energy being displayed ("keras"- strong, and "manis"- soft), the exact timing and power of the *seledets* (the darting eye movements), and the precision of the fan work. This dancer here is absolutely stunning and must have worked so hard for so many years. 🔥😭🌺 Also the orchestra she is dancing with is called the Gamelan. (PS: everything I am stating here was directly taught to me from several Balinese dancers in Bali. Their culture is so beautiful, and I'm just sharing what I learned. 💖)

I am half Indonesian, I’ve learnt traditional dance in my primary school days… you never forget how gruelling the training can be. The music of gamelan is intriguing, you’re almost in a trance… Now I’m in my fifties, and my heart raced when I watched the performance. I can only imagine how much work and practice to perfect this - both by the beautiful dancer and talented musicians.

Wow... talk about a commanding stage presence. Mesmerizing dance. I kept trying to remember to watch her foot, leg and hand movements but she holds you with the intensity of her eyes. But my God...am I the only one who immediately noticed how far back she curves her fingers (and toes)?! That is absolutely stunning. I had to stop the video several times just to check out her fingers and hand movements. Never seen anything like it. Had me thinking this girl comes from a lineage of female Balinese dancers. She uses every single part of her body to convey the dance. No movement wasted. Incredible. And the musicians kept it on point. Amazing performance all around. Much love from America!

I would imagine that she is able to do the curving back of her fingers, due to the fact that she probably began training at a very young age...particularly training the fingers and tendons of the hand to relax...and become more flexible over time.. much the same way acrobats etc train from a young age.

There were these people who came to my school to teach us some things and kids who were in this thing called Kpac got to participate. Kpac was basically an afterschool program where you learned about theatre and get to be in a play. I was in the Kpac so I got to do it. They were teaching us about shadow puppets and some dances kind of like this but easier. It hurt a lot though, one of the teachers said that it can be like that when you first try to do it. It was pretty neat. They came to my school yesterday and today and it was quite the experience.

I'm still identify this type of dance though: It is perhaps one of the recent forms of Legong dance, a genre derived from the old exorcistic form called Sanghyang

    • @kokomputueles4995
      @kokomputueles4995 5 років тому +8

@Jacky Phantom it's local customaries of agabali (the indigenous of the island) mixed with exiled Hinduism & Buddhism of Java island... & ofc Hinduism came from india but the king of java used to costumize it with local attitudes, but later they got conquered by demak sultanate. It's quite complicated historical influences tho to be certainly accurate that made the presentday Balinese cultures 😅🙏

As an amateur dancer myself, I can just IMAGINE the training that took...not to mention that...those type of very precise rigid motions would (I imagine) require lots of relaxation and stretching both before and after the dancing. Not to mention that...she did this for an entire ten minutes...a solo performance...which meant that all eyes were on her, and only her. That makes her performance all the more unbelievable, as it meant that she could not 'relax' for one minute or hope that any other dancers on that same stage might help to 'distract' from her.
All the while moving her overall body, she had to manage the fan, and even 'dance/act' with her eyes.

@@PeachyMushroom Hi! I just read your comment haha. Yes I am Balinese. Our classical dances are also related to Hindu religion, such as Siva Nataraja dance, Rejang Deva dance, and some others.
I don't know what margam format is, so I think I'll have to learn more about that. Here, the dance schools usually start with simpler traditional dances first, then move up to more complex ones with storylines.
All Balinese traditional dances, even the most basic ones, move all parts of the body. Legs, arms, head & neck, face, even fingers and toes. Its just that the most basic ones are the ones with the least variations of movements.

@@Ayu20001 hi, thanks for replying. I am always happy to discuss dance with dancers from other cultures. Especially regarding Indian classical and Balinese classical have similar Hindu roots. Keep up with your learning, it's a fantastic opportunity!!
Sorry, margam is a Sanskrit word used to describe the format/repertoire for Indian classical. I'm sure your school uses different terms.

@@PeachyMushroom Ah, I see! Balinese dances are divided by its functions. There are three of them: Wali, Bebali, and Balih-Balihan.
Wali consists of sacral dances used in religious ceremonies. Bebali consists of supplementary dances that are usually also present in ceremonies but not part of the ceremony itself. Balih-Balihan consists of dances with entertainment purposes, but tell tales of folklore with certain values.
I don't think we have anything like margam. We have several repertoires that are part of Balih-Balihan dances.
Does my explanation makes sense? Feel free to ask again, I'll be happy to reply! Also, can you explain the margam to me? I'm quite curious ehe

You can REALLY see the influence of South Indian dance generally and hand , foot and eye movements in this dance. India's cultural legacy in all of South Asia is Immense. Beautifully executed and carried on by the peoples of Indonesia, Malaysia especially. BEAUTIFUL performance.

Nope, I can't see even a slight similarly with indian culture, different music instrument, different clothing, different music etc, indonesian Hinduism is very very different than your Hinduism, hindu here in Indonesia (balinese and javanese) eat beef and all kind of meat and there is no caste system like your country.

@@worthlessopinion6594 first of all, beef has nothing to do with dance. Even in India, Hindus of some provinces eat beef, Bali is not special that way.
Second, the original commenter said 'South Indian INFLUENCE', key word is 'influence', and that is true. I am Indonesian and even I know this. According to the 'Natyasastra' portion of Wedas, dance has to have rasa (emotions), which Balinese dance follows too. The hand movements are called 'mudras' which are inspired from Hindu God Siwa. Balinese dance is Indonesian, but it has Indian influence, there is nothing wrong in saying this. Bali doesn't become India if it accepts it's true cultural heritage to India. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (seluruh dunia adalah satu keluarga) is a value that comes from Indian influence on Bali only. So stop being insecure. Learn from Indonesian Muslims who never feel insecure despite following Arabic religion.

Not acrobatic dance, but It has a kind of sophisticated structure. She makes these very small sharp controlled moves particularly in arms and wrists, often synchronising her head movement, while doing these body vibrations. This channels expression into a very distinctive, Balinese style. Enchanting
