What people don't know is that gamelan hits different when you're listening it live. The vibration of the instruments shakes your soul, your heart beat races to the beat. It's beyond amazing.
I mean, music concerts or classical music are also better when listening in person, but gamelan is next level. People should put gamelan in their bucket list, experience it once in your life before dying. You won't regret it.

Live performance is always electrifying in it's immediate impact and intimacy. The very texture of music is different in live performance, and these people are great performers. Wish I could go there. I've heard beautiful recordings of all kinds of music, but there is no substitute for being there.

The gamelan specifically the higher notes on it have varying pitch by just a few hertz so it creates an auditory “wurble” so to speak. This “wurble” is often used in meditation music and was discovered by the Monroe institute in the 80’s to be an extremely effective way to synch the hemispheres of the brain.

I don’t think you really know much about western music. Different scales are not uncommon, even as far back as European classical music we have been using different scales. In fact universally all music has different scales, you hear it in all music, like polyrhythms and such. We have things like drum and bass and techno which switched up generic scales or things like math rock which switch up the scale and timing as the music is being played. So this traditional music doesn’t sound off, it just sounds normal. In fact it is basically just arpeggiated and switched the tempo which again European classic music does the same so to western ears it just sounds normal.

I cannot describe what this music makes me feel.
Its so unlike anything ive ever heard. For a jaded, bored and overworked suburbanite westener like me this feels like a spiritual experience. Where im from i feel like Spirituality and curiosity was long ago buried underneath the great Grey monuments to monotony. The concrete jungle and asphalt seas surrounding me are heavy.
Its something greater than me that has reached me somehow. I dont have to understand it, it probably existed way before me. It dint need me but it filled me with something i cant describe.
It make me feel like a ghost contemplating the dark pulsating silent eternity ahead. With the reassuring cacophony of a lifetime infinitude colliding to each other making infinites harmonies.
    I am grateful.
"Thank you" to these individuals carrying a beautiful and intricate culture.

I came here because my World Music professor (@University of Waterloo, Ontario Canada) decided to add Balinese gamelan to the curriculum when she took over the course. End of class project was to listen to a piece of simplified gamelan and try and transcribe what we heard. Such amazing, intricate, cyclical music. It was an intro course, and I learned that Western music is linear (with a distinct beginning, middle and end) whereas gamelan is super cyclical. I liken it to boss music in video games 😂 I love it though 💖 I hope I can go to Bali one day to see it performed. The vibrations must be amazing!

You know, listening to Gamelan music always brings a smile to my face but I never seem to understand what people mean when they say that western music is linear in contrast to the cyclical nature of, say, gamelan music. I might be a bit thick in the head but I've listened to plenty of western music and I find a vast number of works/styles that are either more cyclical than linear (whether in its tonality changes, harmonic progressions, phrasings, use of ornamentation, melodies... even in its philosophy, not just in its form), or are a mix of both. From christian, "pagan" and shamanic traditions to composers and styles from the middle ages, renaissance, baroque...to more modern styles, either blues or rock, electronic or ambient, metal or ethno revival projects. In all of these it is hard for me to pin point what makes something cyclical and what makes it linear as I seem to find elements of both concepts in most things. Even Gamelan music kinda sounds to me like a mix of both with a very clear beginning and ending which mirror each other but also with many segments adding or substracting different elements. There might be a problem with the concepts themselves, at least for me, as a cycle is something which by definition has a beginning, a becoming and an ending and linear time is more how we describe and measure the succesion of historic cycles and events, and not really something absolute. But its way too late for this kind of thought, so I might be rambling a bit :)

I had the opportunity to visit Indonesia in the early 90's and it changed my life - the art and the music and the dancing and the architecture and the whole otherworldly atmosphere of Bali and Java. I hear Gamelan music and it brings me back just like that. It's absolutely connected to the environment, spirit world and the people. It is so powerful. I just hear this music and it brings me out of any funk I may be in for it reminds me of something else, reminds me of who I am.

Each student had to learn an instrument and at the end of the course, we had to perform in the auditorium. We actually had a special performance for the victims of the twin towers on 911 (which was 3 blocks away from the World Trade center)
Anyways, I love the music. Hope to get back to it soon since I’m almost 39 now, and I was 19 at the time.

If I watched Willy Wonka , and in it I heard a tuba for the first time and said I enjoyed it, I'm not implying the oompa loompas pioneered it's creation. Thank you for your time.

............ Claims of superiority are all futile and useless. If they are superior we are all superior.
None is inferior. All is equal. Get your superiority complex or patriotism or bowing down to ethnicities elsewhere.
Equality is the only Truth. Only in equality can we find peace. In superiority and inferiority there can only be conflict. In duality there can only be conflict. Only in non-duality and equality can there be peace.
