I noticed something Donkey and Winter are kind of like opposites if you think about it, not just in hair color but also in how they turned out. Donkey a traitor all the way then becomes loyal to the apes and Winter loyal all the way until he betrays the apes, quite poetic actually.
MORAL: Never turn your back to those who care about you, even if your actions hurt them before, because they might be the only one who truely care about you. 🦍🐵🦧

At the beginning of the movie you could tell Donkey had doubts when the fighting was happening. Donkey is not a bad person innately but he is a coward who wants to survive. This films explores what people will do when their survivial or their race’s survival is in jeopardy

Red Donkey had lived for himself his entire life, yet in his finale moments he sees a selfless Caesar running through the explosions to save his fellow apes. Caesar’s actions inspire him to finally put himself aside for once and make a sacrifice for others which is what he did. It goes to show it is never too late to do the right thing.

The best part is the look of shock and realization in Reds face seeing how far Caeser was willing to go to protect their kind. At that moment Red had realized he made a mistake siding with Koba and then the humans and betraying Caesar and their kind.
That was an afterthought. The original script was him helping Caesar after sometime, but at the end the director decided not to, despite Will and Malcolm proving that not all humans are malevolent or evil bastards.
I actually liked Preacher’s character. You could tell he felt sympathetic when he shot Caesar, and when he saw Caesar in the cage. The only reason he shot Caesar was because he was about to blow up the gas tank. If he blew it up Preacher and the soldiers would die. Humanity was on the line. Would you betray your own species? You might say yes if they’re bad, but Koba started the war. Preacher ultimately sticked with his gut. When he shot Caesar he felt bad, he was going to kill Caesar just to put him out of his suffering because he had already shot him. It’s a fast decision to make
Well, they were fighting another set of humans. So humanity wasn't entirely on the line by destroying this "evil" organization. Of course, we will never know what went through his head.
I can only agree, he was my favourite Charakter in the movie, it is not about hate against animals but about love for humanity, in this point I think the Wohle message of the movieline is really unthought, you cannot make the world better by showing humanity in such a bad light
That perfectly contrasts donkey’s arc which is why it was so genius to have both of them in the scene & come full circle. Someone who chooses their species survival above all vs. someone who had previously betrayed their species
I like Preacher too, but it wasn't about humanity, he was on a faction of rogue humans that participated in genocide against their own, granted they where infected but, the global human military marked them for termination, if Preacher went through with the original script and sided with Caesar, even if he survived, he'd live to die another day, knowing the North would send more after them, its sad really.

This is one of the powerful scenes I have ever seen. Just devastating, yet makes you feel alive because you realize Donkey turned the tide. Donkey's expressions are real gut punch.
The human “preacher” who was spared by Caesar, deals him a fatal blow. He does this despite showing signs of empathy towards the apes. Signalling how far humanity has fallen. Paraphrasing Caesar-“why did you become a traitor” Donkey-“to save myself” Caesar-“is there any part of you worth saving?” Red then presented with a chance to save his species at the cost of his own life, takes it. This redemption shows that the apes souls haven’t been corrupted by greed and selfishness. Beautiful symmetry in this scene
I remember watching this scene in the cinema. My jaw dropped when it showed Donkey saved Caesar. Such a powerful moment. If Donkey didn't do what he did, the apes would of lost the war.
One of the best trilogies I've ever watched. Expertly crafted, from the performances to the dialogue (and sometimes the lack of it). These movies had real heart, a rare thing these days.
This is the most powerful scene in the movie. War is War. Doesn’t matter what side you own, it cost blood & sacrifice. Some times we empathize and side with our oppressor because we have no leader. Donkey was simply that type, loyal to Koba to the end. No vision, No purpose & No guidance. He went into depression after Koba death. Not so much that he was on humans side but any side other than Caesar. He really didn’t stand for nothing. He would follow and do anything human tell him to do. However, it took him seeing Caesar fighting and clinging to life, For him to snap out of it. ( Years of Koba brainwashing) Caesar kept him alive for a reason- because he knew Donkey would eventually do the right thing. Something Koba would not tolerate you either was with him or against him. Donkey was just a product of his environment.
My favourite scene in the movie! I love the way caesar getting the grenade ready is shot in slow motion and then the unexpected bone arrow going into caesar's body, the music and donkey's sacrifice to save caesar and the apes took the scene to another level, great movie!

Today I watched this film for the first time. From the very beginning, I had this gut feeling that Donkey would find his redemption. When it came to this scene of watching the apes running out of the base, I immediately noticed Donkey realized that he was on the wrong side the entire time, and he was expressing his emotions all though his eyes, most noticeably regret. And I mean it when I say this- When Donkey saved Caesar, I cheered and felt happy for him because I was proven right… only to have my heart broken a moment later when the guard ended up killing Donkey point blank. In a way, his character reminds me of Darth Vader. He lived as a villain, but died a heroic death. What. A. Cinematic. Masterpiece.
I like how Caesar was too much weak after that shot... but seeing another Ape risking his life just to save hims makes him realize that he has strenght to keep fighting...
***Spoilers*** I find Preacher’s death satisfying because despite Caesar showing mercy, Preacher still tried to kill him given the opportunity. Humanity’s ignorance to strive to be on top of the food chain and not accepting the apes to be superior It’s similar to the ending in Kingdom, that despite everything Noa did for Mae, she was ready to kill him if needed at their last meeting - simply because her human intuition was to ensure the grand plan of humans taking back control of Earth
I'm really curious if there was an alternate way they wrote Preacher initially. There were waaay too many scenes of him seeming to show a little bit of doubt about following Woody Harrelson, and it literally turned out to be absolutely nothing. There had to be some other idea they had for this character initially. Maybe not a full redemption arc, but something where he refuses to cross a particular line.

For a very short time, if at all. That oil tanker was leaking, odds are a well placed shell was gonna cause that explosion regardless.

This is one of the powerful scenes I have ever seen. Just devastating, yet makes you feel alive because you realize Donkey turned the tide. Donkey's expressions are real gut punch.
Donkey betrayed his own to live… but he died defending his own as a hero.
The human “preacher” who was spared by Caesar, deals him a fatal blow. He does this despite showing signs of empathy towards the apes. Signalling how far humanity has fallen.

Donkey-“to save myself”
Caesar-“is there any part of you worth saving?”
Red then presented with a chance to save his species at the cost of his own life, takes it. This redemption shows that the apes souls haven’t been corrupted by greed and selfishness.

I remember watching this scene in the cinema. My jaw dropped when it showed Donkey saved Caesar. Such a powerful moment. If Donkey didn't do what he did, the apes would of lost the war.

One of the best trilogies I've ever watched. Expertly crafted, from the performances to the dialogue (and sometimes the lack of it). These movies had real heart, a rare thing these days.
This is the most powerful scene in the movie. War is War. Doesn’t matter what side you own, it cost blood & sacrifice. Some times we empathize and side with our oppressor because we have no leader. Donkey was simply that type, loyal to Koba to the end. No vision, No purpose & No guidance. He went into depression after Koba death. Not so much that he was on humans side but any side other than Caesar. He really didn’t stand for nothing. He would follow and do anything human tell him to do. However, it took him seeing Caesar fighting and clinging to life, For him to snap out of it. ( Years of Koba brainwashing) Caesar kept him alive for a reason- because he knew Donkey would eventually do the right thing. Something Koba would not tolerate you either was with him or against him. Donkey was just a product of his environment.
My favourite scene in the movie! I love the way caesar getting the grenade ready is shot in slow motion and then the unexpected bone arrow going into caesar's body, the music and donkey's sacrifice to save caesar and the apes took the scene to another level, great movie!
I think this one is the best planet of apes movie not only because of the plot or moments but the soundtrack is so beautiful

Caesar is Beowulf in this scene. Donkey is every redemption story you could ever hope to love. Great scene, great score, incredible plot.

Fun fact Pierre Boulle that author of Planet of the Apes also write The Bridge on the River Kwai so this was a very nice and fitting tribute to him and both of his works
The final look from Caesar to donkey before he gets shoot was like a thank you to him for saving his life

Caesar showed Mercy to Preacher, But Preacher Didn't...
What messes me up is how Caesar essentially became Koba after seeing enough of what humans are really like.
He may have been a traitor but his final act of bravery, knowing it would get him killed, showed how much of a hero he truly was.
Often times we do things out of fear,Pain,or other emotion…here you can see reds regret on the decisions he has made throughout the movie…Its never to late to do the right thing. Here he stands tall and accepts his fate looking at ceaser and not turning around while saying “I am still an ape!!!!”
After his death, I think that there are no other Gorillas seen, what if Luca and Red were the last of their Gorilla kind? What if all Gorillas are now extinct in this film?
Yeah since first movie i count the gorilla is less than 10
I saw at least 5 Gorillas at the end of the film when the Apes reached the Oasis, so there are still some left.

Today I watched this film for the first time. From the very beginning, I had this gut feeling that Donkey would find his redemption. When it came to this scene of watching the apes running out of the base, I immediately noticed Donkey realized that he was on the wrong side the entire time, and he was expressing his emotions all though his eyes, most noticeably regret. And I mean it when I say this- When Donkey saved Caesar, I cheered and felt happy for him because I was proven right… only to have my heart broken a moment later when the guard ended up killing Donkey point blank.
In a way, his character reminds me of Darth Vader. He lived as a villain, but died a heroic death.
What. A. Cinematic. Masterpiece.

Caesar has to one of the best protagonists in any movie
I like how Caesar was too much weak after that shot... but seeing another Ape risking his life just to save hims makes him realize that he has strenght to keep fighting...

I find Preacher’s death satisfying because despite Caesar showing mercy, Preacher still tried to kill him given the opportunity. Humanity’s ignorance to strive to be on top of the food chain and not accepting the apes to be superior
It’s similar to the ending in Kingdom, that despite everything Noa did for Mae, she was ready to kill him if needed at their last meeting - simply because her human intuition was to ensure the grand plan of humans taking back control of Earth

I'm really curious if there was an alternate way they wrote Preacher initially. There were waaay too many scenes of him seeming to show a little bit of doubt about following Woody Harrelson, and it literally turned out to be absolutely nothing. There had to be some other idea they had for this character initially. Maybe not a full redemption arc, but something where he refuses to cross a particular line.
Initially, preacher was going to join the apes.
Although it is possible to show remorse, even to the enemy! If you look at Ancient Warfare you actually see a glimpse of it.
