Getting rid of the special forces characters was a very good move imo, it gave a lot of room to both the story and the roster.
Havik is by far the best returning character

If you've played every mk game so far and havent played this yet, the campaign storyline is absolutely amazing. They went all out with linking every game to date. You will be pleasantly surprised by what goes on in it.

Hell yeah. Will buy it for that alone. MK rarely disappoints in comparison to the vast majority of games that come out these days that are broken or buggy or greedy AF with microtransactions.

Hats off to Mortal Kombat. When the first game came out I was 12 and blown away. I'm still blown away 31 years later. Somehow they keep it fresh and fun for the old and new generations.

I may be in the minority, but I absolutely loved the Konquest in Deception and I'd love to see something similar happen again one day. Seeing the realms all fleshed out like they kinda were in that would be such a fun addition.
I was definitely a fan of that also and I keep wishing they'd do something like it again. Mk11s single player thing was close but not quite.
I was really hoping they would bring my boy shujinko as a main cast fighter I hope they bring him in later but aside from that great game
omg i loved konquest, and it made me appreciate shujinko so much more. i really hope they make a game mode like this again. i still, to this day, replay it every now and then.

I believe to my hear th MK Deception and Armageddon was the last good mortal kombat game that games had lots of fighting styles for 1 character. And the was so much characters now we have not many characters with 1 fighting style. Also so how you can die from the map in old games was fun

@@danielorlovaquinn *SPOILERS* I personally disagree, I think MK11's "2 timelines" plot worked better and was cleaner and better paced than MK1's "infinite timelines" plot. MK1's ending felt very rushed, probably due to having to do so many variations of the ending. But I still loved both stories, and I really loved MK1's changes to the universe, such as "Reptile/Baraka/Sindel are good now"

This game is so bare-bones. The story fell apart at the seams, literally, theres no krypt. There's bo conquest. TONS among TONS of characters are missing, or just a button-press sidekick. Boring unlockables, boring stages... No interactive set pieces, no traps to knock people off of, into, or walls to break through... No nothing. Im so disappointed, I want my damn money back... 11 kicks this game so hard, its a mist... And Im also a fan of 9 and 10. This one was... Real bad. Skip over this one, guys.

They keep putting more and more characters behind paywalls and that's why I stopped buying mortal kombat games.
There was something truly magical about Mortal combat back in the days. Where in order to see finishes and combos, ypu would have to be at a friend's house or playing with others order to witness it, there was no UA-cam and so watching fatalities for the first time was such an incredible thing to do with friends. I really miss this era.
DUDE. Memory unlocked! First hearing about Liu Kang's dragon fatality in MK2 was insane. Finding out about how to play against Noob Saibot. There were no videos, just us on a playground explaining in the most wholesome detail, possible lol.

Oh come on, this roster is AMAZING! A very good balance between klassic kharacters and fan favourite 3D era kharacters. The last MK game trilogy was all about Special Forces and Black Dragon. It's refreshing that they're focusing on others now.
Yes I agree, MK is mainly about ninjas, monks, monsters, realms, and mystical things. Special Forces is boring.

A few things: Lack of content! There is not much too do after one run of invasion. Kameo upgrades take way too long!! Kid friendly story falls flat after 2/3 of the story it self. Shame but not a golden hit if you ask me. In the end I think a lot of players will drop off after 40hours of play.
I hate the Kameos like why couldn’t they just make them fully playable, im praying they do in the future till then 6.5/10
I hate how kameos made half the characters unplayable and people are defending it claiming "they wouldn't exist then", no the real reason kameos exist is because the developers are too lazy to add gameplay and fatalities of more characters. This is just lazy design disguised as an excuse to add less.
I agree .. they should have made all characters playable and us able to choose who we want as a cameo.. this is very lazy game design and I hate the cameo system .. I want to olay with those characters .. also should have gave us a mode where we can play without cameos
Fr I wanted to play as goro and more charaters but I couldn't because of the kameo system I hope in the next game they fix that

They lost me with the cameo stuff, CANNOT stand that mechanic and how they executed it.
The limited gear customisation is a huge bummer for me. I know it wasn’t for everyone in MK11 and there were some third gear pieces that seemed unnecessary but I still think every character should’ve had at least 2 gear slots. Being able to change Scorpions mask but not is sickle makes no sense.
and the fact that all the characters now have the same body, just different skins. Especially the girls. Shao Khan is like 200lbs lighter. smh

Yeah the gear customization is what kept me playing Injustice 2 and MK11 for so long. Without it, there’s nothing really to play for if you don’t play online.

I have MK 11 and I like the character models in 11 they looks stylish. This time in 1 they look like side characters. 11 was stylish. Sindel was great in 11.😂

Making characters cameos only seems so weird and unlike a fighting game. Why not just make them playable?
one thing im not seeing mentioned a bunch is how immaculate the stages and stage themes are, with the stages being split up pretty evenly between metal album cover and colorful landscapes/locales. and if u dont believe me about the music take Black Dragon Fight Klub (arguably the best and most memorable stage theme in 11 despite that not meaning much), and put that up against The Pyramid (Top) . its obvious they are both going for a dark and foreboding trap beat, but one is much more memorable and catchy than the other

The thing i am most hyped about is them bringing kenshi back as a main character, was kinda bummed that he wasn't in MK11 but so hyped he is in MK1

REAL gamers who don’t play fighting games still wake up early to watch the MK story mode on UA-cam.
The only thing I don't like about this game is how characters with jacked up mouths like Baraka and Mileena speak perfectly fine with no lips. It really bothers me, lol!
Despite some issues, which I'm certain will be dealt with by NRS over time, I've fallen in love with this game over the last few days. A vast improvement in gameplay compared to MK11. And, as a fan of these games since the first, im kinda glad the likes of Sonia and Kano are relegated to Kameos. Its a nice way to keep them in the game without bogging us down with the special forces aspect of the games like the last three NRS iterations. Great review Jake, as always 🤌
Before you buy there’s a whole cutscene where sindel talking and the one of the lines isn’t even translated. It just shows a file name and they haven’t patched it yet 😂
As an avid fighting game player, I think Street Fighter 6 raised the bar so high for the genre it's pretty much an uphill battle for any upcoming AAA fighting games. MK1 excels in a lot of things, but it has a handful of lows in quality-of-life features that just snowball into being annoying at times.
IMO, the lack of a lite-tutorial in story mode every time a new character is introduced is a bit baffling. Other genres have been doing it for nearly decades, like how CoD campaigns also serve as tutorials for the multiplayer mode. The tutorial mode outside of story mode itself from my experience is really good, but everyone knows that the majority of the playerbase isn't touching that mode, or even care that it exists. It's why Street Fighter 6 and the upcoming Tekken 8 have made modes to organically teach players how to play the game outside of the tutorial mode with modes like World Tour and Arcade Quest.
As for online, I haven't experienced much problems, but it's very much MK11's netcode, for better and for worse. It doesn't happen often, but audio can desync for an entire match, which is quite jarring. The netcode is very much functional, but is just not top of the line anymore like it was when MK11 was released. Also there's an annoying bug for private room matches that straight up makes them unusable most of the time. Gameplay itself is great, other than Kameos eating certain inputs for select characters, it's very much a fun system to play around with.
I would honestly give it an 8/10 for its current state at release. Some QoL things really need to be ironed out or patched. For example, there is currently no way to pick your characters' costumes and colors from the character select screen. You have to exit back to main menu and choose your costumes and colors in the Kustomize menu. It's a small thing, but it's a baffling design choice nonetheless that's just annoying.

Good points. Additionally is spending Koins in shrine, and queuing for ranked from practice. Sf6 seems to get you into matches way quicker, and even trying to get one combo out in practice before you’re matched would be preferable to doing nothing in a loading screen
I was thinking the same thing. SF6 has made this game less exciting to me. Great game but I fell off world tour. It's kind of just a side mode to me though.

@@BeaverB0nes I think most other fighting games nowadays allow you to matchmake from training mode. It's pretty much a basic feature.

The visuals look so good for this. I love that striker throwback with the run in and zap lol. I liked the coop options in the last game in the towers mode thing. Not big as a fighter gamer and getting into them is notoriously hard because of how high the skill level is with other people.

I’ve always loved MK .. but I think ima wait for a sale on this one, it just doesn’t look new enough to warrant a full price buy, and most of the fighting areas look bright as hell, too much light! Mk was better as a dark, sort of horror theme game

Love the changeup in this one very well done and thought out. Invasion mode is great too definitely a great buy.
"Tripe Threat" in Fengjian Village is the quickest way to level up in character mastery and unlock the things u want. Be level 30 or close before u do it. Keep repeating the process and you'll level up in no time👌

Im as noob as noob can be. Causally played n64 mk and xbox 360 its not bad
The dlc characters being Homlander omniman and peacemaker is really dope as I watched all 3 shows but im still not a huge fighting game enthusiast and have never liked playing online. I play for the story and the single player stuff like towers of time and now invasions... but after looking at the new mode im kinda disappointed, it looks more like a chore than a fun mode imo.
The only negatives for me are:
1. Megan Fox's cheesgrater of a voice (they should honestly re-record all her lines with Christina Vee Valenzuela)
2. Downgraded customization
3. Invasions is a tedious/monotonous grindfest
4. Not able to fight without the Kameo
5. No krypt

Finished the story mode today, was really awesome and way better than 11, also the ending definitely leaves room for a great DLC story
Otherwise the combat is also really fun and engaging, and the Invasions mode seems to be quite interesting as well
It’s definitely the best story they have done since mk9 it’s amazing and makes you really drawn to the characters.
Having played MK10 (MK X), I did enjoy the living towers and the general kombat with X-Rays.

Deception Konquest was the best idea they ever had. The little secrets with being at spots at different times, the characters you would find and challenge. The progression of leaving the village and shujinko's age. Onaga as the last boss. Fuck I loved that game. Idk if they'll ever have the passion/opportunity to be that ambitious again. Micro transactions killed gaming, art doesn't profit. Creativity not rewarded. Maybe one day it will come back
They won't tell you the truth. If you have a Johnny or Omi man, you're untouchable online. Certain characters can't keep up with others because all their moves are safe on block like a Johnny Cage to the point that's all people pick online. There are no overhead combos for most characters. If they low block, all you can do is grab, which most people do 30% of the time because there's no time to punish with nothing but a grab. Seriously, if you pick a character like Reptile, against a Johnny cage you're cooked because all Johnny have to do is low block and attack you soon after block while Reptile is still recovering from his hit on block. Mk11 and MkX, the characters felt balanced, like if you're good, it shows. On MK1 it's more tight conservative game play, running away, overuse of kameos and same characters. From a real MK player, it feels like the combat is watered down to me. There's no back and forth with the fighting like they want everyone doing the same lame approach to fighting.
I actually started playing the game yesterday. It is very similar to the previous game but with a lot of changes to the storyline. The only negatives I have is the kampaign story mode audio quality. For some reason the cutscene audio sounds very low quality, but the minute it switches to the gameplay, then audio quality increases drastically. But other than that, MK1 is amazing!

It’s a cash grab. No intro, no outro. Worse graphics. No intro dialogue in the tower
what i like about the kameo system is that it adds so much variety to each round. it feels and looks cool to start your combo, cancel, use a kameo, and then continue it for some people ive seen to do 53% damage. Its not just an easy button, either, it requires a lot of technical skill to know when to fire it off and to hit the right buttons in your sequence. Ive been addicted since pre-release, and the training segments are really thorough

Does anyone know if in this game, you can perform stage fatalities ? I think on MK11 they added Friendships and other stuff on later updates. I wonder if they'll do that with this game.

Probably won’t be stage fatalities I’m gonna assume animalities and friendships will return tho we got hara kiri back and this game will be getting a lot more support during the lifecycle than previous titles so more will probably come a year or so into the life cycle

I love how polite most characters are. It mirrors real life. Only 3% of the population are psychopaths/dark triad anti-social. Most people prefer to not jump at every opportunity to be an asshole and start conflict.
Smoke and Reptile are good bois in this game.
And 3% is based on what ? Reported cases, mostly by woman.. if men would start sharing experience of womens having NPD, it would jump to 15%.

My only issue was I wanted 1 big roster where you choose your main and then your cameo. Not two separate lists. Yes it would have been more work, but it's their job and we're willing to pay for it so idk that's my only real issue.

My first MK since Armageddon on the 360 and I have been having a blast with it. Was on the fence about paying 100 bucks for a MK game since I haven't been into fighting games since I was a kid, but I am having no regrets. Story and lore is surpsingly intricate, combat is fun. It's difficult, but satisfying. The graphics are gorgeous and it's just fun to play. I do have some stuttering issues in cutscenes on PC, but I believe they are aware and working to fix that. There are a TON of games dropping in September and October, so hype.
Armageddon is still the best MK

MK1 weakest part is Female COSTUMES. The best hottest designs were in MK9/MK10. A MK game is worth buying just for the story mode only. It is always awesome.
Was a little upset about the ending tbh. When I saw possible teasers for onaga and blaze I was stoked but only for it to end how it did left me a little less than satisfied, but overall awesome game and great kombat.
DLC expansion coming, it ended that way on purpose with Havik.
You should also mention that certain countries with big MK fanbases (Russia and Belarus) received a version without online features, which means that more than 60% of content is locked for them (myself included). If WB locks away content, than don't allow the game to be purchased in this countries...
I really liked the story, I got to a point in the story when it really felt like MK's Flashpoint (in a good way). we came to see familiar characters' origins unfolding in different ways, like Kenshi, Havik, Scorpion and it was really cool and fun

I already deleted it off my hard drive. The only mode worth playing is online because the game lacks content. When I get off work I jus wanna game and enjoy not fight with spammers online. Gorgeous game and the animations are wicked. Its not worth the 75.

Too late, bought it months ago and wow is it fun. The story is pretty good but kind of fizzled out in the end. It's not terrible, but needed a final push. Combat is fun, characters look incredible, and the stages/background are top notch gorgeous.
The plot is just dogshit.
It ended that way because the DLC expansion is coming obviously. The ending only opened a door.

Not a single reviewer mentioning how the game has zero cross platform play. I'm genuinely confused why no one is highlighting this as it's a major flaw to any fighting game. They want to bring it post launch... but the fact on PC that it's on both steam and epic stores means there will be another nightmare scenario waiting to be revealed here if they do bring it in some form.
It’s not really an issue it’ll be patched in whilst they work out the jank cross play doesn’t really mesh with the net code currently
I grew up playing mk, so happy to see 3D characters back, but can’t help but be annoyed that shang Tsung, Quan chi and ermac aren’t base roster even though they’re huge parts of the story…. Also miss having the krypt- a cool giant puzzle replaced by singular fights with annoying projectiles 😅
Agreed, invasion is decently cool, but the krypt was too awesome and in-depth
Agree, I don’t understand it either because half of the kameos ain’t even in the actual story and just name dropped instead.
This game is amazing but........... I think I just got tired of fighting games. I used to love them and I thought this would pull me back in but I think my tastes just changed and they feel like a lot of work now instead of fun. Still a fan of what this game accomplished but man I wish I didn't get the preorder version at least.

This game has been very good, the bad ones come from it's technicals though. Slow loading times, 30 fps cutscenes, fatal blow, fatalities and even invasions kind of annoying tbh
The lack of customizations was a bit of a let down but not a complete deal breaker also i really hope they add a option to turn kameos off at some point.
What? This game sucks, the story is filled with positive-CCP-approved-behavior and horrible voice acting.
I honestly just want and open world mortal kombat these games have been playing with the same mechanics for years all they do is make the characters look different and add new fatality
At this point, I’m down to play an action adventure game set in the Mortal Kombat universe. Either you create your own character or you play as Lou Kang, Sonya, Blade, Johnny cage, subzero etc… I think it’s a great IP and deserves to be in a different genre.

Just don't buy. It's worth about 5 to 6 hours of gameplay. And nothing else. ABSOLUTELY NO CUSTOMIZATION! INTROS. ITS DESIGNED TO STEAL YOUR MONEY!!!!!!!!
it's a fighting game. you buy it to fight other people.
