    Why 3 locos for such a short train. Surely Britomart or Maid Marian could have managed that load on their own?

      The dry weather meant that Maid Marian with no spark arrestor could do no work so Blanche was added to ensure no loco would throw sparks from working hard.

    How does the throttle work on the double fairlie? Are both engine sets working at the same time? It appears in some shots that only one set of cylinders is getting steam at a time...but maybe I'm just misunderstanding how they work...

      Each power bogie has a separate regulator.

      @@FfestiniogWelshHighlandThank you so much! Although, that raises more questions for me... Do you have any recommendations for further reading about how these locomotives work? They are beautiful machines!

    That lorry lifting up Maid Marian at such an angle like that has to be one of the most scariest things I've ever seen 😳 😂😂😂

    Are there any original Spooner outline farlies left in existence?

    • @FfestiniogWelshHighland
      @FfestiniogWelshHighland  Рік тому

      That depends what you mean. Livingston Thompson is in the National Railway Museum at York and is the least altered. It is in more or less the condition that it ended service prior to preservation.

      @@FfestiniogWelshHighland I mean an original Farlie. Still in the condition it was built in.

      In that case the answer is no.

      The Little Wonder which was the very first 'Spooner outline' loco only lasted a few years and after that came a continual evolution of the double Fairlie design. The Ffestiniog is and always has been a working railway so improvements where possible were and are vital. The basic design of Merddin Emrys, David Lloyd George and the new James Spooner II is very faithful to the Victorian design.
