There couldn't be a more fitting location for this collaboration. When No.4's last boiler ticket expired, I'd seriously wondered whether I'd live to see it back in steam. Congratulations to all, in offices and workshops, who made this possible.
Well now I know and this wonderful clip shows the old loco completely comfortable in it's historic home from home.
OK ... got to ask .... any news on No.5's wonky wheel?

Small technical question: My understanding is that the FR uses vacuum brakes and the VoR uses air brakes. I'm therefore curious as to what method is used to allow Palmerston to control the brakes on the VoR stock.

You are quite correct. There is a compressor in the van that generates air and a slight modification to the locomotive allows it to operate the air brakes.

Are locos from Ffestiniog compatible with Vale of Rheidol given the slight difference in gauge?

160 years old! Can it be said which parts are still original?

Does it really matter? So long as there is continuity with the original parts, it’s still the same locomotive. We as humans are continuously shedding parts of ourselves and growing new ones as we get older. And even metaphysically, can you truly say you are still the same person you were 10 or even 5 years ago?

@@connormclernon26Aye ... but steam locos tend to leave major attention better than they started out, whereas our dodgy DNA mitosis generally guarantees things go t'other way!

Were you thinking of the old joke: “this is my favourite broom. Had it for years. Its only had six handles and three heads”

It wasn't my intention to question the age or start a philosophical discussion. I was just asking because I was curious which parts actually can be used for such a long time. Certainly not the boiler, and certainly not the sheets for the cab and the tank. Both were later additions anyhow, and AFAIK the frames were replaced relatively early in the locomotive's life. But what about the wheels and axles? Or the cylinder blocks? The chimney?

@@fritz46Likely no more than a few ferrous castings and very improbable cylinder or valve chests would be on that list. IIRC, not even No.4's wheel centres are original, so you'd be looking at perhaps the handbrake stanchion and smaller levers and brackets.
FWIW J.I.C.Boyd commented that the Festiniog (one 'F' back when he wrote his histories) never 'rebuilt a locomotive, they 'renewed' it.
