There was a particular summer, before the Spurs decided to make him the #1 option, where studying MJ in the post was the main focus for Kawhi. Summer after that was spent studying more current players on how to draw fouls.
This may be a hunch but I feel like their hand size also help. If you watch easily both Jordan and Kawhi grip the ball, it allows for an easy smooth shot on the fadeaway and focus on footwork.
Yup it's the hand size, there's a video of Old Jordan past wizards era teaching the fundamentals of fadeaway, in the video he says he shoot with his 3(thumb, index and middle) fingers only to control the movement of the ball.
I watched Game 1 Rapt. VS Bucks and thought, hmm...Kawhis Bodylanguage reminds me more and more of MJ...in the next Moment i See your Video! So Cool Bro! Your Analysis ist very interesting!
When I was balling 20-25 years ago, I used to try a lot of his turn-around fadaways. I can tell you, he expends a lot of energy performing them, especially the ones where he spins in the opposite direction than normal. Just amazing!
thanks for the great video! just subscriped. these MJ alike shots was exactly what i was thinking about while watching Kawhi in the playoffs. I also notice that kawhi has been trailing when the defense forces him to shoot after hanging more time than regular in the air. The shoot is coming short. But Kawhi is being really impressive and i think he is about to dominate the hanging in the air fade aways and become even better. Cheers from Brazil
@@brianmontgomery580 3 is more than 2 if all of it goes in though. But Harden has a record of bricking multiple threes in a row, 22 consecutive threes missed in a playoffs series, a 0-11 threes in 1 night. damn
And people say that Jordan’s game won’t be relevant in this era. Kawhi’s a testament of how effective Mj’s game is-- in any era. I’m also waiting for that big man to mimic Kareem’s sky hook as well as Hakeem’s post moves.
I don't really think or has to do with Kawhi's vertical ability but more because of his shot. MJ had a clear two motion shot which allowed him to more easily hang longer on the fadeaways. While Kawhi is more in the one motion/two motion shot area kinda like Klay Thompson
I wanna see a video that explains how you do your analysis. Some of the details you talk about and explain seem really tough to make good conclusions about (like when you explained why the second foot is farther back). So I'd love to learn your process because I think it could probably be applied to many things.
A really good way to absorb contact on a layup is to actually create the contact yourself and give a little bump to the defender. If you know that there will be contact, if you initiate the contact you will be in control and throw your defender off and go up for an easy layup. Also, that way you can create the contact on the drive but before the actual finish which requires precision. If you wait for contact while going for a layup, that contact will come when you're finishing the layup and throw your shot off, and the defender will be in control.
Two things often overlooked, Mike moved away from defenders when performing his turnaround fadeaways or moving to get an open shot. He was very apt at making his defender pick his own help defender to create spaces to shoot..
Great video! Kawhi has a dope ass game much better than Lebron! But if u breakdown any video of any player u can match it to another player from a past generation. So much ball has been played u can even match the spots the shoot from.
Dope vid I don't save alot of things from UA-cam but this is getting saved .....the fade away is my go to move during runs at the YMCA done right its impossible to stop
@1:29 that hangtime is why V.C still has a sweet jumper. His and M.J's leaping ability allows them to still see the rim as the defender is already coming down.
Hal Jordan Don’t listen to the media. Pippen is a great defender but Jordan was every bit the lockdown defender pip was. Jordan won dpoy and had two seasons with 100 blocks and 200 steals.
Kawhi creates more contact on his shots than Jordan cos the NBA allows offensive players to extend through the elbow to push off defenders now, which they didn't back then. You still can't extend past the elbow today, but that elbow push-off (forearm shiver) is relatively recent and a big advantage for offensive players.
MJ did have more hangtime and in general had more athletic ability than Kobe did. Which speaks to just how athletic MJ was because Kobe was a phenomenal athlete.
just so I can get comment # 223, I'm glad you made this video. Kahwi is looking like he "knows" he will beat his defender much like MJ. I hope he starts to play with his prey.
Kawhi is already doing what MJ is doing but man, seeing the two immediately after another shows you how refined MJ's game was. Kawhi moves so stiffly while MJ is just silk. Kawhi can get to this level of refinement though. He works hard enough and it shows.
Yup he's a little robotic but hopefully will be able to upgrade to T-800 for smooth movement. Mj's smoothness became the basis for his other nickname "The Black Cat"
i honestly dont think it will happen. the smooth jordan you see in this video is the late prime version of himself which was already stiffer than the 84-93 version of himself simply by adding too much muscle during the off season of 95.84-93 jordan was absolutely the smoothest bball player ever existed in the history of bball, with so much finesse in every aspect of the game. if leonard could not do that in his athletic prime he doesn't stand a chance to get to jordan's level. you can tell that leonard has some 'bad' habits that will prevent him from getting to jordan's level. he does that 'killer crossover'-like dribbles off the ball far too often without the evasiveness and sudden change of speed of tim hardaway's. with his slow footspeed his only hope to get open is to use his body to bump people off or his defenders being to slow to defend his move. jordan rarely do nonsense dribbles like that. he would just do a explosive drive off the ball and get pass his defenders with a few dribbles. jordan was all about going left or right faster than anyone could catch him in the most straight forward dribbles but it is also one of the hardest thing to do in basketball. you need to have a combination of big hands, quick reaction and good read on d, and explosiveness from stand still to full speed off the dribble with flexibility that allows you to move your feet pass defender along with your dribble, and good balance.
lol how does no one know this? Pop gave kawhi tapes of MJ to learn his footwork, offensive repertoire, and decision making. He literally learned from MJ tapes. He also studied barkley tapes.
He’s nuanced his game last year when he was rehabbing from his quad injury, 16/17 he was a little more explosive but I think he became more methodical to reduce his risk of injury, he seemed more stiff in his movements this season. Also I think this was his best year offensively I think he’s the most complete in the game besides KD (get well soon) I’ve noticed all the best scorers have an elite mid range game or a post game (Kawhi KD Bron) Steph and Harden not included because when the 3 is not falling they can be slightly neutralized. Kawhi & KD will post up or get something off the dribble from the in between range to get themselves going and also can maintain efficiency because their Skillset isn’t tailored for specific things however u want they can give it to you
yah. Thing is MJ uses his big hands more effectively too (mid air adjustments, controlled one handed shots). But that's likely because kawhi doesn't have the same hangtime.
Jordan's hangtime is the secret sauce that made his fadeaway such a versatile tool. Kawhi's got the setup down, but Jordan could modify the shot as needed to ensure the contest was inadequate. He also had the superior shooting arc, can do it better off-the-dribble, has many more post-moves for mixups, and seems to have more overall range with the shot. Kawhi has a lot of things left to learn.
Well you I consider Kawhi's game to be Fundamentally polished. Although he is a primary scorer. The way he gets his shots, how he takes them, and how he can see a better shot for his teammates are fundamentally amazing. I am not a flashy type of player, but as my body gets alot more roughed up, my game slowly transitions into these kinds of playstyles.
What's amazing is that Kawhi wasn't brought in to be like Mike or Kobe; he worked hard to develop that mid range shot and 3pts. He's definitely come a long way since the last time he won FMVP.

Kawhi is a top 2 player in the league and the best two-way player.
Top 3.
Christian prince.
Did you watch the kuroko movie
Any team with Curry on it would be better than with Kawhi, so you'd rather have Kawhi than Durant and LeBron?
I hate that term they just stat using that term a few years ago lol either your the best overall player or you not and that is Kd or Lebron
As someone who subscribed to your channel pretty early I'm still not fully used to you talking during your videos but I'm slowly getting there lol.
There will be a mix of the two!
Me either
Me too :|
Kawhi learned from kobe and kobe learned from Mj. Kawhi wants to be a winner that's why he patterns his game to kobe and mj who are proven winners.
True
FACT
it the only blue print, that have been proven to worked winning multiple championships with different players. #fact
Man I've been saying this for years. What are people looking at? 🤦🤷
There was a particular summer, before the Spurs decided to make him the #1 option, where studying MJ in the post was the main focus for Kawhi. Summer after that was spent studying more current players on how to draw fouls.
Kawhi best in the league right now he is so smooth man. MJ without the flash
Not even close to smooth as mj but the best in todays game
alan shelly koshy of course not but similar
EVERY basketball player emulates EVERY past and present player...these “mimicking” comparisons are ridiculous, your skill set is your skill set
Not really. Name me a guy Michael hakeem duncan Shaq gloves pippen Magic Kareem copied from.
Aw ya missed including that clip of the Kawhi doing a grip & fake pass like MJ does @4:44. But I love this video and its premise, solid job.
All this praise comes when he’s not on the spurs...smh

Which is why I loathe and love him. Too bad he didn't stay with his team like they did.
@Nima Elyasi actually his shot coach had him put it in front of his face because he kinda put it above his head
@@anthonynorman7545 It's the Spurs fault he left. Get mad at them.
Michael Jordan no it’s not he wanted out spurs couldn’t do anything about it
Mj passed the torch to kobe then kobe passed it to kawhi. You are right sir. It is still from Mj.
This may be a hunch but I feel like their hand size also help. If you watch easily both Jordan and Kawhi grip the ball, it allows for an easy smooth shot on the fadeaway and focus on footwork.
Great point.
Yup it's the hand size, there's a video of Old Jordan past wizards era teaching the fundamentals of fadeaway, in the video he says he shoot with his 3(thumb, index and middle) fingers only to control the movement of the ball.
Dude great vid. Kawhi is seriously a top 5 scorer in the league when considering scoring skillset.
I watched Game 1 Rapt. VS Bucks and thought, hmm...Kawhis Bodylanguage reminds me more and more of MJ...in the next Moment i See your Video! So Cool Bro! Your Analysis ist very interesting!
kawhi studied mj tapes to learn his moves. srsly. they were given to him by pop.
I just need to take a moment to gasp at how godly MJ was, especially with that fadeaway. Those clips are actually making me emotional...
When I was balling 20-25 years ago, I used to try a lot of his turn-around fadaways. I can tell you, he expends a lot of energy performing them, especially the ones where he spins in the opposite direction than normal. Just amazing!
So far it's working. May God continue to favor this young humble man, aka "The Klaw"
thanks for the great video! just subscriped.
these MJ alike shots was exactly what i was thinking about while watching Kawhi in the playoffs.
I also notice that kawhi has been trailing when the defense forces him to shoot after hanging more time than regular in the air. The shoot is coming short.
But Kawhi is being really impressive and i think he is about to dominate the hanging in the air fade aways and become even better.
Cheers from Brazil
Kawhi weapons are more deadly than Hardens three steps back.
Kawhi will eat Harden 1-on-1 any day
Nor Priest he’s also bigger so that helps in the 1v1 situation
nothing is more deadly than a step back 3. kawhi’s fadeaways and pullups are nasty, but 3 is always more than 2
@@brianmontgomery580 3 is more than 2 if all of it goes in though. But Harden has a record of bricking multiple threes in a row, 22 consecutive threes missed in a playoffs series, a 0-11 threes in 1 night. damn
@@brianmontgomery580 A stepback 3 better than a fadeaway lmao this little kids.
@@bernarddelossantos8083 even though a stepback 3 isn't better than post fadeaways with high iq, kawhi can the shoot the 3 very efficiently
And people say that Jordan’s game won’t be relevant in this era. Kawhi’s a testament of how effective Mj’s game is-- in any era. I’m also waiting for that big man to mimic Kareem’s sky hook as well as Hakeem’s post moves.
I know! If only Giannis devoted himself to studying Hakeem and Jabaar in the same way Kawhi did with Jordan/Kobe.
Robin Bartels yup... with his physical ability he should be able to do it..
Robin Bartels omg can you imagine Giannis with a sky hook?....
@@robinbartels5501 only of Giannis accomplish the Dirk fadeaway
Dude, i was waiting for this vidéo so long. You the first lauching a comparison the git. So thankfull....made my life complete.
I don't really think or has to do with Kawhi's vertical ability but more because of his shot. MJ had a clear two motion shot which allowed him to more easily hang longer on the fadeaways. While Kawhi is more in the one motion/two motion shot area kinda like Klay Thompson
Kawhi got everything but a one motion shot.
@@kingphil4073 not enough hops
I wanna see a video that explains how you do your analysis. Some of the details you talk about and explain seem really tough to make good conclusions about (like when you explained why the second foot is farther back). So I'd love to learn your process because I think it could probably be applied to many things.
You've been straight grinding lately! Love the work!
Nice work bro keep grinding but can u make a vid about absorbing contact while doing layups? Or have a drill bout it thankss
This video articulated so many of our thoughts so clearly. Thanks for this.
Very nicely done, sir! You didn't diminish one to elevate the other.
@1:29 that hangtime is why V.C still has a sweet jumper. His and M.J's leaping ability allows them to still see the rim as the defender is already coming down.
that's a great point man, V.C ol' as dirt thow, but hmmmm good work if you can get it 🙌🙌🙌🙌
No one will be better than MJ but Kawhii have a lot of years to prove himself ....

Closest thing to MJ since MJ hands down.
Have you heard of Kobe Bryant?
When Doc Rivers made the statement about Kwahi being the most like Jordon he ever seen, it was so much talk about it.
I’d say Kawhi is a Jordan/Pippen hybrid.
Has Jordan’s killer mentality and offense vs Pippens defense.
And Rodman's rebounding!🍻
Hal Jordan Don’t listen to the media. Pippen is a great defender but Jordan was every bit the lockdown defender pip was. Jordan won dpoy and had two seasons with 100 blocks and 200 steals.
yeah Jordan was a defensive beast too. and No One will ever come close to Rodman on rebound...
There is a clip of MJ doing a fadeway vs Bullets in 97 I think. Jordan is floating so back on his fadeway. His hangtime is just insane.
Jordans air time is a phenom yet to be seen until this day. Constantly doing it through his whole career.
MJ was allowed to do it in his day. In fact, MJ could literally shove you out of the way and not get a whistle. He was nice!!!....And protected.
Awesome analysis. I knew MJs shots looked smoother but couldn't put my finger on why until now.
0:44 y'all notice how MJ sneaks in two quick steps to get deeper position 👀
Sneaky
The art that every goat centender must master.
well someone made a vid about it. i always was drawn to him. i grew up watching MJ.
Kobe actually thought him most of these moves, in which Kobe got it from MJ.
That one two dribble jumpshot of MJ was deadly ... i was so kawhi learned that ... kobe had that too
Really like your videos! Minimal design, shorter than usual and with enough content and detail. Keep on!
The fadeaway for perimeter players is like the hook shot for bigs. Unstoppable when done right, but not used enough.
Fantastic video... but just one thing: "hangs a split second longer ...insane stuff that only MJ can do.." ... Kobe
OK OK... “almost no one but MJ.”
Pop gave Kawhi, MJ and Kobe tapes and told him to watch and study. And we are finally starting to see the similarities
That coma is really badly placed though
Check out our journey with our vlog series! 🙏🏻 ua-cam.com/video/dz-D_wlqpDo/v-deo.html
Excellent work
Kobe be like "i got MJ move but i have no MJ palm, you better be greater than me bruh. "
Your color grading is on another level
Kawhi trained by the mamba Kobe Bryant thats why he moves like mj
lol how does no one know this? Pop gave kawhi tapes of MJ to learn his footwork, offensive repertoire, and decision making. He literally learned from MJ tapes. He also studied barkley tapes.
A few years ago, Kawhi said in an interview that Pop wanted him to watch a footage of MJ's moves and Michael Jordan was Kawhi's favourite player.
love the comparison and music
He’s nuanced his game last year when he was rehabbing from his quad injury, 16/17 he was a little more explosive but I think he became more methodical to reduce his risk of injury, he seemed more stiff in his movements this season. Also I think this was his best year offensively I think he’s the most complete in the game besides KD (get well soon) I’ve noticed all the best scorers have an elite mid range game or a post game (Kawhi KD Bron) Steph and Harden not included because when the 3 is not falling they can be slightly neutralized. Kawhi & KD will post up or get something off the dribble from the in between range to get themselves going and also can maintain efficiency because their Skillset isn’t tailored for specific things however u want they can give it to you
I've been saying this for years. And he's the one guy with MJ huge hands that can do the things MJ did.
yah. Thing is MJ uses his big hands more effectively too (mid air adjustments, controlled one handed shots). But that's likely because kawhi doesn't have the same hangtime.
@@played0ut yeah , sad. Still great how he's using his body as optimally as possible though.
Kobe move like Jordan, Kawhi think like Jordan
Best comment
Love this comparison type video!!
Great video, learned a lot
Damn that center of gravity thing makes sense lol
Nice analysis !!!
From MJ to Kobe then to Kawhi
⛹🏀⛹🏀⛹🏀
MJ : Kobe : Leonard
Good analysis. He worked with Kobe a few summers ago so Kobe probably showed him MJ video along with physically showing him.
Thanks for sharing. It is great.😁
when you make the comparisons, is when you can enjoy how much explosion and jump Mj has
it would be awesome if you could do a video about absorbing/creating contact in the paint
I thought im the only 1 seeing the similarity. I love their game simple moves. Although jordan does it with a bit classy
GREAT VIDEO!!!
Brilliant breakdown.
