What gets lost about Jordan is that outside of his otherworldly athleticism and unyielding need to win at EVERYTHING, he is easily one of most fundamentally sound players of all-time. He hardly ever put a foot wrong in terms of his footwork, the correct angle is always taken, he’s got a mastery of the glass on both his flip shots and his jumpers. MJ’s post game is preposterously potent. His defense divine. His passing? Unbelievably undervalued. By the time he finished his second 3peat, he had every trick in the book and written an entirely new one all his own.

I’ll be honest: I wasn’t sure I could ever get myself to do an MJ video. The task seemed too daunting. His skillset sits somewhere between sublime and supremely spectacular and trying to parse pieces of his game seemed insanely difficult. Then @zhugelianges and I got to talking and both our channels love a good player-centric post up compilation. Obviously, Jordan is just the best to ever do it, so why not him, right? Z decided he was going to do the low post stuff and so we agreed I’d do mid post stuff. I found it a little difficult trying to determine which shots to include because some start in the low post and work out to the mid post while others begin further out and work in…so I guess a conceit I used was that so long as it either began or ended in the low to mid post, I could include it. Yes, the video is a little bit messy in terms of different styles but I wanted to include as diverse a selection as possible (#12, #45, rookie to young MJ features, some clips that had to leveled all the way up from 360p, to final Bulls season Jordan). If you’re a post up purist, you’ll probably recognize that the moves might not really be post ups, but it’s MJ so just enjoy.

@high horse Yeah true, In his early years he jump too much on his shot, in later years he developed it and jump a little (except from a fade away). In his early years his play style is more on driving to the basket and minimal in shooting
Most of his jumpshots in his younger days look more like floaters where hes hanging in the air off balence like that Craig Echlo shot & he was good at banking shots off the glass wit these high degree off balence jumpers where hes relying on his leaping ability changing directions in midair then shooting a fundamental textbook jumper
It wasn't just the 3 ball, his overall midrange jumper wasn't there yet & he took years to refine his mechanics so the jumper can be reliable. In his younger days, hes overwelming guys in the paint wit 1 little fake or jabstep would be enough for a defender to bite on it & he can counter by just jumping over u wit an offbalence shot shot off the glass like Duncan. Even when he got the ball in the post, didn't really need fancy footwork, wit his athleticism he could just drive middle or spin baseline

high horse YOU don’t know what you’re talking about because you clearly didn’t pay attention to MJ in his college days. He already was accustomed to most of these post moves by his sophomore year, which is what OP was referring to, not his shooting mechanics. Yes, his shooting form developed considerably in the nba but reverse pivots, dream shakes and shimmies, drop stepping (no one could drop step on a dime off a turnaround feint like MJ until Kobe emulated it in his later years), one dribble pullups, using frames in the low block...he already had a fundamental handle on these techniques in his rookie nba season. His post game footwork and IQ was unmatched as a guard.

Jordan mastered imo one of the toughest yet most essential parts of the game- the mid range. He OWNED every inch of the space 15-20 feet out. Years later this still leaves me in awe. The GOAT

It's funny because, back then, no one even called it mid-range. That's just what people shot. 3pointers really didn't have a place in the game, other than end of half or game desperation, until after they moved the line in for 3 years to encourage teams to take more 3s.
@Gibran Camus I hope you say the "best" was Wilt or something (and I wouldn't agree, but I can understand it) because LeBron is not better than MJ. Not stat-wise (outside of longevity stats for the most part), not achievement-wise. I've seen some LeBron fans saying that LeBron was the best and MJ was the greatest, but that's a BS attempt at logic which is really a back-handed compliment in disguise. If you're the GOAT but somehow not the best, that implies you had more help and/or faced weaker competition, and when you actually look at stats like all star appearances and opponent records as well as team ratings, LeBron did not have less help nor did he actually face tougher competition overall.

That's why he's less prone to injury. He moves very smooth and natural.

Would've been nice to see him play live but I had a little bit of Kobe then the Lebron+Curry Saga, so I can't complain. Game doesn't look as fluid as it used to though, the midrange isn't nearly as prevalent :(
He played on a very rough era of basketball yet hes postup moves are so smooth. No unnecesarry elbows, no pushes, no offhand unnecessary holds almost no intention to initiate fouls. Just purely beautifull mastered post moves. GOAT🐐

That's what I love about Jordan's game, his post moves/fade away and his post moves up-and-under how he scored. Video is 8 mins long and he scored in different ways using the same move from different angles of shot selections and footwork. His game was just artwork

MJ’s foot work was impeccable and he had a counter for every defensive adjustment possible for his fade-away. Simply the GOAT!
Jordan had the best body control, and footwork, of any shooting guard I've ever seen. His fade away was so "lethally accurate" because of his ability to turn (and jump) with enough height to fade, and still have enough strength in his wrists to shoot the ball in proper form. The 🐐

Jordan's post game was poetry in motion, especially in his latter years with the Bulls.
MJ was such an efficient scorer due to him mastering all the fundamentals of basketball. No wasted dribbling or moves which along with his superb athleticism then you have the GOAT. Kids these days want to do all kinds of dribbling and pull up for a 3pt only lol while lacking so much fundamentals of the game. Majority can't even shoot mid range jumpers.

You’re 100% correct. Use to be on a basketball court the fastest way to move the ball was passing to a teammate. Now players are way more likely to hold onto the ball for one on one match ups on a spread floor. Zero fundamentals.

Why can't ppl appreciate Kobe without trying to put him on the same pedestal as MJ. They should redo the top 10 all time and label Jordan in a whole different grade all by himself. No one belongs in the room he sits in. No one can reach the pedestal he stands on past, present or future. He's in his own world and no NBA player belongs in any comparison or conversation with him. There were plenty of times his turnarounds were blocked, by Kobe, Tracy McGrady... usually when they're on the leaning forward motion, when MJ didn't apply feeling the defense with his knee and without a little push back before turning around. But 98.7% it was successful.

I've never in my life seen any non-center come close to being as dominate as Jordan was in the half court. A lot of the younger kids think he was "slower" because he didn't play in a high tempo offense. This video illustrates clearly why he didn't need too, and why he wouldn't want too. He saved that energy for defense.
I've seen enough. Im convinced. He is indeed an offensive Maestro. I like guys like LBJ, but majorities of LBJ's highlights are clearpath lane drives overpowering weaker defenders and mostly coming off a screen in the halfcourt set. Add the threes to that lately, now that is Lebron on the halfcourt set. He improved a bit on the post because of his size, but not yet on the level of MJ and Olajuwon. The closest I've seen mastering the up and under, head and shoulder fake and with a phenomenal footwork like MJ and The Dream was Kobe.
Thats correct i believe of lebron was drafted to bad team in the west he would be not far from mj. I say this bc without the easy path to the finals he wouldnt have that horrendous finals record. Lebron didn't exactly work on his post moves and jump shots until his 2nd stint with the CAVS.. this is exactly why he was exploited by DAL and SA's defense and dared him to shoot.. having said that, LBJ is way more efficient in his scoring now compared to 10 yrs ago..

One of the reasons mj was so accurate on his postup turnarounds (he's just a shade under 50%) was that his shooting wrist was VERY strong. So he could jump out of the gym to get separation with his fade, but he would still have very good control over his shot when he flicked his wrist. This actually doesn't get talked about a lot.
The reason a lot of other perimeter players struggle a lot more fg-wise when they try to shoot a fadeaway is because they have to use their arms a lot more, lessening the amount of touch and control.

Do y'all realize only a handful of players in NBA history could effectively perform the moves MJ did in this video? And Mike did it every single night.
No one can duplicate that. Even Kobe. Because you need 1. 48 vertical. 2. Big hands WITH soft touch. 3. Ultimate body control and quickest neoreflex like a cat. 4. Footwork. I m not even talking about the ultimate work ethics yet. Many great players only have some of this but not all. It’s God given gifts plus hard ass work.
Kobe was way better shooter than jordan, if kobe made that his staple it would have been easy for him. Kobe used to use it but it wasn't his "go to". Kobe used everything in Jordan's arsenal, Jordan even said Kobe is the only person he thinks can beat him one on one because he knows all his moves. Phil said Kobe is a better shooter and stats even prove it. Jordan had maybe 1/2 step on kobe on everything besides shooting in their primes.

As much as I love a savage dunk or block, there's probably nothing prettier on a court than a well-executed mid-range fadeaway. Kids today love the three and for good reason but I still love the mid-range two, primarily because of MJ.

It’s cool seeing how in his early days he had a lower set point and he would have to jump higher and square his shoulders mid air to make the shot while in his older days he would jumped less and had a higher set point and only squared up with the follow through. I am a diehard MJ fan - this is the best MJ highlight video that I have ever seen - the mastery of the craft, the footwork, the head fakes, ball fakes, putting that body on the defender and backing them down, the finishing touch, using the left hand to create distance between the defender, using that glass, and all the other crazy sh*t he did while in mid air - you can see more confidence in his (back to the rim game) later in his career - earlier he would just post up and go up in the air and stay in the air 20 minutes until the defender has eliminated his own self out of the play, then shoot 🤣 - later on, he was backing the defender down using a lot of body contact and footwork to score - MJ23 G.O.A.T.
I just found myself smiling from ear to ear...so many jump shots with hands directly in his face, heavily defended and he absolutely owns them! He was such a beast!! Zion needs to emulate everything MJ does here, no 3's, just power moves and short jumpers!

If you contest too early, he will fake, do a step through and lay/dunk it in. If you contest late, he will fadeaway. If you contest at the right time and play good defense, he still makes it. A defender can literally do nothing about MJ except to just hope that he misses. It’s mind-blowing.

@@calebroca5134 If you are great at it, its the most efficient way to score the ball. Many times analytics guys look at percentages but since most of them never played they never factor in energy expenditure. As players age you understand that you only need to put as much energy into a play as needed to be successful on that play. When MJ caught the ball on the pinch post he became a 3 dribble or less player. Very little energy is used and playing from there he´s able to get 30 points on 30 to 60 dribbles. Also means the player only needs to be quick for 2 steps so being able to score from that part of the floor also slows the effects of father time. James Harden takes 30 dribbles in 2 or 3 possessions alone. Gret players when they get into the early to mid 30´s need to learn to play in burst. 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 8 minutes... When you can score 14 or 15 in a burst without moving it means you have a few more burst on the offensive end or can buckle down for a few possessions on the defensive end.

@@sareaper69 Exactly and that´s why Phil challenged he and Kobe later to become efficient at playing from the pinch off entry passes and guard around as opposed to consistently using time and energy to attack off the dribble from the wing. That season there would be times where they´d erase a double figure deficit in a blink because it was entry, one/two dribbles and score.

The game had to be so fun being that good. I don't know why nobody has ever asked him that. I don't think I'd ever leave the basketball court if I could do these things.
His footwork and mid range was beautiful. He may not have had a high percentage 3 point shot but he could definitely make 3s if wanted too but from mid range he was fucking amazing.

This is the stuff a lot of his all-time highlight reels miss. Perfect efficiency, creativity, and fluidity. Mike wasn't just the freakiest athlete of his time, he was an absolute technician, master of his craft on both sides of the ball, and a psychotic competitor. He's the GOAT and it isn't close.
