    I will start by saying I cut my teeth on 30/06 for hunting and .308 for military use, so I have extensive experience with both. I took 6.5 Creedmoor with a heavy grain of salt and skepticism until I finally bought one for whitetail hunting. Up until this point I had only used the 30/06 to hunt whitetail and 7mm Rem Mag in Colorado to elk hunt with, I really didn't understand the use or need for the smaller 6.5 at the time. I purchased a Rem 700 SPS ( garbage trigger and stock ) to start as a base rifle, first day I put over 60 rounds through it and was very impressed at its performance and comfortability to shoot for extended round count, It didn't beat me up. I could easily and comfortably hit targets ranging from 75-400 yards ( about the limit of my realistic hunting range ) in field positions..not from a bench or with the aid of ridiculous pillows. My confidence began to grow and since then I have put close to 1000 rounds on my hunting rig and taken several large whitetail deer with ease. I truly believe that 6.5 Creed, when kept within its limitations ( deer-sized game ) at reasonable ranges it's extremely hard to beat especially with the availability of the ammo ( well maybe not at the current time ), light recoil, flat trajectory, bullet selection, SD, and short action provide a light handy rifle with medium-range capable killing power. I think where the " wheels fall off " people try and take it out of what it is designed to do...... it's not an Elk cartridge, sure it will work in a pinch but it's not ideal. Overall for whitetail, mule deer, coyotes, antelope sized game it is truly a great overall package.

    A 143gr ELDX starting out at 2700 (not maxed) in a 6.5 CM will have 1500lbs of energy to 450yds. 2000fps to 600yds. Probably one of the most popular hunting cartridge setups. Basically the Precision Hunter load if you're buying off the shelf.

      The BC is good but it does not reliably stay together which is a HUGE deal on thicker skinned game like Elk, Moose, and Bear. Has it been done? Sure. But it’s not been done more times than it’s been successful. I have 2 friends that both didn’t retrieve their cow elk with boiler room shots in the 6.5 PRC at 280 and 320 yard shots. We assume the ELDX basically blew apart on impact which left no real blood trail.
      They have since switched to Terminal ascent and are very happy with last seasons results 👍🏻

    This is the best type of information on youtube, for shooters that have not taken the time to learn or do not have the experience to know these things! I am a seasoned hand loader/ lead slinger but I am very much looking forward to seeing lots of bullet testing!! Would love to see this with the 243 win.! Bad bullet selection has caused poor hits on a lot of game. Your testing could help lots of people!! Thanks, Brian

      @joelodjick230 4 роки тому +1

      Man is that ever true. Most of the time when you hear about game lost with a 243 and you ask about bullet construction you get a "huh?" in return...Yup someone shot a game animal with a varmint bullet, I am sure. Whatever was cheapest in the store.
      Load that thing with a 95 grain ballistic tip or a partition of similar weight (or a Barnes etc) you have yourself a rifle.

    • @Gunrunner223
      @Gunrunner223 4 роки тому +2

      Exactly right! Bullet construction, is the #1 attribute, of a good hunting gun. My dad shot a few deer with 243 100gr corelokts, and the deer never left a blood trial. They died, just had to find them by tracks! He switched to a nosler partition, and started getting pass through shots, and blood trails. On the same note, 25yrs ago, a friend shot a deer with 7mm mag 140gr ballistic tips, shot was in the shoulder, but bled very little, tracked about a mile till blood finally stopped! I couldn't believe a 7mag couldn't bring him down, but another guy killed the deer that evening with a neck shot. My friends ballistic tip, had exploded about 1 1/2" into the shoulder, with no vitals damage. Lesson learned..the faster and or lighter the bullet, the tougher it needs to be constructed. My rule of thumb is, 2400-3000 fps/ use a lighter built ,ballistic, or accutip, or SST. Above 3000fps, use a bonded or partition, or thicker jacket bullet. Sorry for the long reply, I'm a gun nerd. Have a great day

      Where did you get the number for the energy required to take down elk or deer? I'm not doubting it, but I also know of people who have killed deer with .357 Mag at close range. That is only about 700 ft-lbs versus the 1000 ft-lbs you recommend. Why do you think the extra 40% energy is necessary?

    A couple examples - here, you say 6.5CM has around 2,100 rds of barrels life, while your cartridge profile says around 2,400; & I've noticed your recoil ratings on 7mag & 280 AI are a little different between 2 different videos.

    I love my 28 Nosler. A big part of felt recoil is the design and setup. I have to be careful taking it to the range because hitting the 1000yd target is so easy and satisfying with it. I can easily run throu 100 rounds. 10 range days and I'm rebarreling. It is immensely effective on game, and my particular rifle recoils less than any 30-06 I've shot. 175 grain bullets.
    I also have 6,5 Creedmoor and .308. I use the 6.5 for confidence. I use the .308 to work on skills.

    • @Nick-sx6jm
      @Nick-sx6jm 4 роки тому

      Just got a 28 nosler. So you usually get about 1000 rounds before you rebarrel? How much do the groups open up before you call it for the barrel and do you do like 3-5 shots before letting the barrel cool or after every round? Havent been able to find anyone who has burned out a barrel yet so im pretty curious.

    • @ChristopherKnN
      @ChristopherKnN 4 роки тому

      @@Nick-sx6jm Personally I try to go easy on it. I will run 1 mag/5 rounds, then switch off to another firearm while it cools. I have a carbon wrapped barrel on mine, so it can be very difficult to judge barrel heat... no perceptible mirage. Barrel erosion happens at a different rate for every barrel, but can be increased by heat and pressure. A "burnt out" barrel is also subjective to a person. It involves the expected/needed accuracy for the intended use. I have approximately 400 rounds through mine and I can still place 5 rounds under 1.5" at 300 yards. For a hunting rifle that is exceptional accuracy. I live in west Texas, 300 yards is often a close shot. I would never consider 28 Nosler a competition cartridge. It is capable of being very accurate, but you would be re barreling every 3-4 weeks.

      its not that its impossible its that its a bad choice of a caliber for extended ranges. yes it'll kill if placed correctly but the farther it is the more time that animal has to rake a step, turn its body, change something you didn't anticipate. and ultimately hit it in a not so perfect spot. leading to either an extended blood trail or worse yet not finding it and it dying later on never to be claimed and gone to waste. its this scenario anyone with true ballistic knowledge would choose a higher energy round . bragging about distance shots with a small round is literally putting a flag on your back saying i risk wasting animals because i willingly choose inadequate rounds .

      Joel Odjick, while I agree the 6.5 CM and 6mm CM cartridges have superior external ballistics than the old 30-06, those same modern hunting bullets for rapid expansion for the 6.5 and 6mm can also be had in the .308 diameter as well. However, the PRIMARY difference is not bullet construction offerings between the two cartridges, but rather in case capacity. 6.5 and 6mm CM at ~43 grains will never have the capability to hold 57 grains of powder like 7.62x63, even if a reloaded were to hotrod the cartridge beyond SAAMI pressures.
      Granted, it is possible to throat the chamber of a 6.5/6mm CM longer, and seat bullets at longer COAL, at compressed powder chargers, however the .308 win parent case still will not have enough volume to approach the old 30-06. Indeed, the 30-06 is a very inefficient cartridge for it’s powder charge compared to modern cartridges (like 6mm ARC for example), it still is a better choice for knocking down big North America game like elk at short distances.
      I’m actually in the process of building a PRS rig in 6mm CM, for local matches, and I think it is important to use the correct tool for the job. The modern CM chamberings were specifically developed for competition purposes, in which using a 30-06 would be an absolutely terrible choice.

To complete the puzzle in the pursuit of ultimate accuracy and precision, you'll need a good chamber/throat design, a straight barrel with correct hardening and clean rifling, a concentric action, a stiff stock/chassis, and concentric ammo. Something to remember is the greatest accuracy enhancement device in the last century is the keyboard. Lots of shooter claim .5moa or better. Very few can produce that over and over. Many rifles will occasionally produce a .25moa group, few will do it consistently. Better to ask the guy bragging about it to produce a target with 5 5-shot groups on it. • @Gunrunner223
      @Gunrunner223 4 роки тому +3

      When a barrel burns out, it mostly won't be visible. The term burn out, means that the barrel has lost accuracy. Example, a barrel that shot 3/8" groups consistently, starts shooting 1" or even worse. Barrel burn out in extreme accurate rifles may only show 1/4" loss in accuracy to be considered burned out. Bullet speed, chamber pressure, and rate of twist, all contribute to burn out. 220 swift, and 243 win are considered real "barrel burner" cartridges. Even "burnt out" barrels may still be accurate enough to be used for hunting, just doesn't have the dime size groups that it once had. Hope this helps. And I'm not an expert on the matter, just a gun nut! Have a great day

      @@Gunrunner223 In addition, when a barrel starts to get used up, it needs more cleaning more often.. 10 shots and clean? Etc. But it's all relative to what accuracy you expect. 2" is still well enough for deer/elk at 100-150 yards, so some people will probably never have a rifle not usable for their hunting.
      we had a 308 with 20 000 rounds through it, it still performed 0.5" 5 shot groups (hunting stock, so it has never been much better). But i had to be cleaned inbetween groups, or it opened up after 5-6 shots. But that rifle would be okay for many years hunting but for ELR etc where you spend 100+ rounds a match without cleaning it would not work.

    • @leadcloud
      @leadcloud 4 роки тому +1

      @@johnwaw6363 it's not really a metal issue, it's just a wear issue. Any barrel in any gun will wear out slowly over time. Even though bullets are softer than the barrel, they do still apply enough friction to the surface to cause very slight wear. Higher velocity rounds apply much more friction to critical areas, with much more pressure behind them. Over time that will erode away the rifling and the throat of the barrel. In your typical semi-auto combat rifle you won't see this until you hit many many thousands of rounds, but it will happen. But with precision rifles, small amounts of wear can make big differences in grouping, especially at extended ranges, so the barrels are considered "worn out" after a much lower round count. For extreme examples of wear, look up barrel inspection videos on high round count machine gun barrels

To shorten it up a bit the standard bolt firing pin hole is to large for CM’s for some reason which causes extreme primer flow, pierced primers, and sometimes even primers blown out of the pocket. I recently found and started watching your videos and have enjoyed all. I d like to add my opinion and experience with the 6.5 Creed. I have two target rifles both chambered in this caliber. I purchased a Ruger Precision and later had a custom rifle built. Seems this caliber has a love / hate reputation. I agree it has some good qualities but has been given others that not only aren't feasible or ethical with the Creedmoor they shouldn't be practiced with any caliber. I had heard of but didn't know what BC was or how it applied to bullets and shooting. The 6.5 Creedmoor as most know was created for target shooters as a inherently accurate cartridge ( it is) and it is comparatively flat shooting if compared at 1000 yds. or more just as it was designed to do.
    The reason I feel this round got the negative image with some it has is the difference between target shooting and hunting using it. At reasonable and ethical hunting distances, I consider 400 yds.max most traditional deer calibers 270 , 7 mag even 308 do shoot flatter and for hunting only and more suited. Recoil has been another good issue and I know some handle better than others but hunters don't as a rule fire nearly as often nor number of rounds compared with target shooters, a positive factor firing typical numbers and allowing bullet impacts easier spotted. Ballistic Coefficient , BC is important only to target shooters at ranges farther than 600 or so yards and this is where the Creedmoor shines and also I believe where it got the reputation its capable of taking game at extreme range. There is so much involved trying to put a hole in paper at long range even shooting with rests front and rear where conditions are known , shoots aren't hurried and I haven't seen a target move at all or unexpected. Lastly I believe it's uninformed or irresponsible use that's given the 6.5 Creedmoor it's larger than life and unappreciated, even hated reputation.
    Thanks and I notice some sp. mistakes and its not my poor grammar but typing skills or lack of so bear with em please.
    Great hunting or shooting and do so wisely and safely.
    Also I apologize for length but remembered something important and that's the difference in bullet selection. Target rounds high BC bullets are thin fully jacketed that cut air and wind well but aren't designed nor should be used hunting large game. Pick well designed expanding ones for hunting.

      Like most rifles, there are a lot of variables in barrel life. One thing that makes a huge difference is barrel temp. I have somewhere upwards of 2000 rounds through my 6.5cm and it too still shoots better than the guy behind the trigger, but I treat my barrel like a baby bottle. I set my wrist on the barrel after each shot and if it’s uncomfortably warm the rifle is allowed to cool before more shooting.
      I have buddies that shoot F-class that were seeing throat erosion after as few as 1000 shots and unacceptable accuracy between 1500 and 1700 shots. The general consensus among the group is that
      1) they have to shoot even when the barrel is fairly hot, especially in summer matches.
      2) the unburnt powder leaves the cartridge at just enough of an angle to sort of sandblast the throat slightly before it continues down the barrel and burns up.
      Once they switched to the 6.5 PRC most of them were getting much longer barrel life even though it’s a faster cartridge.
      The talk got a lot more technical than that and pretty much went over my head so I hope I got that last part right.
