@Max William Lauf I remember a lot of weird stuff like that they used to have basically if you lost the manual you might as well throw the game out. Think of how many games that wouldn't sell if you had to do that nowadays
For what it's worth, I was in contact with the person I bought this from, and they had zero qualms with the invoice being shown. It was an address from 24 years ago and is no longer valid anyway, and if they had a problem with it being out there they wouldn't have included it in the sale to begin with :)
Lazy Game Reviews I love the joust shirt, its one of my favorite arcade games! *Edit* lol, love watching improper hardware used for games, like gta with the pinball controller XD. This was a fun episode.
Lazy Game Reviews about philips quitting game-stuff: they sold their chip-manufacturing branch to ASM which then became ASML and it's currently the largest company in my region, they don't create consumer electronics anymore they create the machines that create chips, so your Iphone's processor is probably printed on one of those ASML machines. so that's the explanation why they don't produce gaming hardware anymore....
mine turned up today but isnt working?, im on windows 10 but it should just recognise it as a keyboard and work, do you have to use the short lead or just the long lead???
The insensitive nudge seems like a major shortcoming, since I'd think the main reason one would buy a massive pinball controller would be to get realistic-feeling nudge action. But those clicky flipper buttons look good.
It's bizarre that Philips went to all this length to make an arbitrary controller, but not also make it compatible with their CD-i system too :S It would have been perfect for the system, especially considering all the other wacky controllers it had. Also that game looks uncannily like Pinball Dreams/Illusions/Fantasies.
+eklipsegirl Yeah, I've heard of it, but never played it. I'm actually kind of happy they didn't make this controller CD-i compatible, since the system had enough controllers already.
As a big pinball fan, this looks really cool. It's totally set up like the front of a pinball machine; the plunger and the flipper buttons are in the right places-- and, if you have a good standing setup, it seems like a really good approximation of what it's like to play on a real table (as opposed to controller-manipulated simulation). Shame about the tilt/nudge feature being so difficult to use. Nudging is one of the natural things that comes with playing on a pinball machine, and it's not implemented very well (or very intuitively) on PCs/consoles.The Wii came closest to getting it right with its motion controls (via Pinball Hall of Fame), but it was a bit touchy. This peripheral could've been near-perfect if nudging was better. Laughed my butt off at the end of this, too! Thanks for putting this video together. I really enjoyed it.
Pinball Hall of Fame for the Wii is one of the few games where Nintendos crummy motion controls actually worked properly. The flippers, plunger and nudging the pinball machine felt good.

That looks like a really neat device! Epic Pinball is also my favorite DOS pinball game. I got it back in the day because it natively supported the Gravis Ultrasound.
You know you're watching someone dedicated to their craft when they print out an entire PDF manual to make a makeshift one just to show you that one page in hard copy.
Another great review. Of all the subs I have, this channel is the only one I make sure I don't miss! I wish I had that pinball controller back in the 90s because that was my favorite genre. But now it's like a niche thing.
For what its worth? This Virtual Pinball controller would make a GREAT Virtual Pinball machine!!! Perhaps with some mods, extra buttons, I think this would make a good controller for a cabinet.
Philips is still huge in Sweden. They make tv´s now mostly. BUt also the odd dvd bluray and Hifi stuff. They marketed the Magnavox stuff here aswell. So the Magnavox Odyssey 2 is called the Philips Videopac in Sweden and i think all of Europe. Philips is considered a quality brand here mostly.
Its kinda like how the Fairchild is called Luxor tv-datorspel (Luxor tv computer game) I have both of these systems, the latter new in box where i was the first to open her up!!
Mikael Andersson Philips has not made much since 1999 they out sourced it all now. They only design an invent now days. Acer bought Philips computer rights. All TVs now days Philips. Sharp. Toshiba shop brands are now days made by a company UMC. Universal Manufacturing Company. Just like Samsung out in consumers by buying Pye brand Microwave design rights of Philips as Samsung Spain was making all Philips microwaves. In fact Sony TFT televisions in Europe EU were made by Samsung Spain since 1996. Sharp bought Pioneer (Philips high end) out ad Foxcomn bought the lot out in 1996. So mass electronics these days is made by Samsung, UMC and Foxcomm. Same went for white goods. Philips is a ODM not a OEM now days. Original Design company.
Foxcomm bought the lot out in 2016. Foxcomm also make Apple stuff. Samsung OEM and ODM make parts even for competatives such as Apple, such as the new 2017 IPhone OLed screen is said to be made Samsung. Its all becoming one brand now days called China.
I have watched all your oddware episodes and I really feel this is your best one so far! Nice balance between the background info, the stuff we all love, and actual usage of the thingy you are trying to review :)
The bits where you play games never designed for the controller are always the best bits of any hardware review! I’m always in stitches laughing my head off!
The flipper buttons look and sound super authentic, so I can only assume they feel just as good. As a pinball junkie I fully support some intrepid engineer creating something similar but with a better plunger and better tilt mechanics.
Oh my god this brings back memories! Thanks for showing it. I had one of these as a kid and just loved it. Sold it some time ago but still got the Absolute Pinball disc in my collection.
As much as I look forward to your videos in general, there's something special about the Oddware reviews that just make me perk up immediately as soon as I see them in my YT feed. :)
I will admit that I watched/listened to the first 2 seconds of this video many times in a row, with headphones on, just to experience the stereo effects. It was awesome.
*plops it on table* "Made by philips" me: Philips made gaming stuff? "Of course they did stuff like CD-i" me: Right, I have only heard of and looked upon CD-i based footage every month of my past 8 years of life including AVGN and UA-cam poop videos yet my brain still gave me the initial response. Nice.
I commented this in the first place because Devil's Crush is a Pinball game! And one of the bests I've ever played! And playing it with such an awesome pinball controller would be amazing!
Philips is big on many media standards. Cassette tape is all Philips, Sony and Philips were the main force for DVD, Philips and Pioneer developed laser disc, and like you said Philips was the main force behind CD alongside Sony. Philips might actually be the most influential company when it comes to successful media formats. Certainly up there with Sony.

My first console was a Philips G7000 better known as Magnavox Odyssey 2. They kept that line going for a while in the early 80s before switching to CD-I.
Although it's obviously a niche device, and a gargantuan beast, it looks like it could provide an experience without peer in its day. Impressive machine for virtual pinball enthusiasts.
I think it could be a cool video explaining the history of Cables in computing like the speeds and size of the old stuff vs usb and sata cables... Never seen anyone talk about that before.
That thing is very odd indeed. Phillips always seemed to make weird stuff, one of my personal favorites is the Velo 1. Now they're all about toothbrushes.

I could see this being kind of cool on one of those Visual Pinball cabinets people build these days. It'd cut out the woodworking part, at least. Just lay a widescreen monitor down on its side, and there you have it.
The good ol' days of playing EPIC Pinball... I swear, playing with mom and dad back in the day with a device like this would have made the experience even more exciting to me. I know I'm 4 years late, but the tilting works really well using the handles you can see at the front, but you need to fix the controller to your desk.
"This game is NOT shareware. Please do not distribute" aaaah the good old days where games asked politely not to be pirated
There was a shareware version which included only the first table (the one played in the video). It displays that message when you register it.
