    _And if anyone thinks the tomato was being affecting by my hand: _*_NOPE!_*
    The metal contacts are only on the inside of the sensor, not the outside. My hand wasn't touching anything but the plastic casing while the tomato was on there, and the tomato was held in place by a velcro strap. I was only holding it up so it'd be in the video frame, but before I was testing with it just sitting on a wooden table and it got the same result!
    Got the idea from The New York Times, where they reviewed the MindDrive using a grape and a wet paper towel: www.nytimes.com/1996/10/01/science/mind-control-for-pc-s-i-think-not.html

      Since you were holding the device with the tomato on top, you were affecting the tomato by subtle direction changes in your hand. The tomato might have acted as an amplifier of your brain waves.

      There are respected theories of consciousness in the cognitive science community that state that external objects such as a mouse and keyboard, should be considered extensions of actual conscious experience. As in the peripherals are actually as good as part of your mind if you're using them, so there's that too.

    Someone needs to decompile those executables and see what's actually in them. I bet all it does is check if your finger is in or not; the game plays itself.

    • @nexaentertainment2764
      @nexaentertainment2764 6 років тому +62

      There are far too many micros in the finger thing to just be sensing resistance or capacitance.
      As others have said, it's probably not a complete scam. It probably measures *something*, but that data is complete garbage and mostly random. The games likely have a bit of auto-steering or help just so it's not totally random and worthless, but who knows.

    • @guidad542
      @guidad542 4 роки тому +10

      Nah decompiling was a thing back then too and I think that the devs wouldn't just use a pseudo-randomizer while discarding sensory input altogether. I'm willing to bet it just detects a slight change in whatever it detects and then randomizes the result (maybe that's why the tongue result looked different)

    HOLY CRAP FINALLY SOMEONE FOUND THIS THING
    I remember playing this in a computer store sometime in the 1990s, with a skiing game. But I could never remember what the name of the product was, and literally every time I've ever told someone I played a mind-controlled skiing game at a computer store in the '90s they've looked at me like I was crazy. Honestly I began to wonder if I was just misremembering the whole thing or maybe even dreaming. Thank you for confirming that I'm not actually crazy.
    From what I remember it actually worked reasonably well for the few minutes I tried it. The tutorial said to relax, and to think 'left brain thoughts' to move right, and think 'right brain thoughts' to move left. I was able to actually do it kinda.

      At futuroscope in the 90s, the had paddles that a camera would sense and allow audience style games and basic forms of interaction to be fed back to one of the screens, but to be honest while the make a picture or shape games where fun for a bit. the film choice thing was like a really bad 90s FMV game that made dragons lair seem like a Tolkienesque epic
      Why bother with mind control on a digital choice when you could have analogue tactile sensors in the seat arms, meh there is no need, want a personal experience, play a game, want a collective one see a movie.

    I can’t believe you have this on here! When I was a child my class went to a local university to a science exhibit showing off cool tech and experiments. They had this on display with the skiing game and I remember as a child even thinking, “I’m not actually controlling this”. I’ve talked to people about this and asked if they remember it and they though I was crazy. I now have the proof it exists.
    On another note at the same event they had this new crazy tech called the DVD playing space jam. My mind was blown.

    Scientific minds think alike. I came to the same conclusion that you did at the end of this video. Galvanic skin response sensors are just measuring how conductive your skin is to electricity and after that it's all (weak) interpretive theory regarding how to actually translate that information into anything useful.
    your quip about the inner child wanting to believe in magic really hit the nail on the head, I wanted this to work too - even though I knew it was too simple to ever work.
    Oh and good spot on that worm 'training' program. That is the real turning point in thinking when it's so clearly programmed in a way to make you think you're almost getting it, then losing it, then you have it for a little while! They put so much effort into this deception it's very disappointing. But a great bit of history to own :)

There have been many occasions in the last 20 years where I recollected bits of that memory here and there, but I always thought it was the "WINSKI" game that was controlled by this. This was really cool to see, since it sortof confirmed a memory I had from when I was 6 years old.

    I distinctly remember using something very similar to this from the early or mid-2000s. The product was designed essentially the same, something you clip your finger into, and it came with a game which I think was meant to help people deal with anxiety, depression, emotional instability, among other issues. Much like with the MindDrive, you play the game by using the "power of your mind" to feel a certain way, thus (I guess) manipulating your body temperature, electrical impulses, and heart rate, to accomplish various tasks. My mom bought for me when I was like 14-16, and I only played it a tiny bit because I kept getting lost and thus bored of it rather quickly, even though it mostly worked ok.
    Edit: The game is called Journey to the Wild Divine. It's actually a series with several titles including The Passage, Wisdom Quest, and Healing Rhythms. I think the one I played was the Passage, but I'm not entirely certain.

    does this work in windows calibration? what it kinda looks like is that it has two contact pads that probably read how much of your finger is over the area i.e. two axes that adjust an analogue number value the more your finger contacts the pad. Kind of like on the original xbox there was a feature on the controller where it knew if you pressed the button down some or all of the way. While this wasn't used much it's a near essential feature in Metal Gear Solid 2. I bet if you try configuring it in windows it shows up as two analogue axes with numbers that increase the more of your finger is on the pad
