Hear the Otherworldly Sounds of Skating on Thin Ice | National Geographic

- This small lake outside Stockholm, Sweden, emits otherworldly sounds as Mårten Ajne skates over its precariously thin, black ice. “Wild ice skating,” or “Nordic skating,” is both an art and a science. A skater seeks out the thinnest, most pristine black ice possible-both for its smoothness, and for its high-pitched, laser-like sounds.

Black ice is recently frozen, and can be as thin as 2 inches and still support the weight of a skater. Like a dome or arch, the support comes from the sides rather than the top, and the water underneath prevents the ice from breaking. But, experience and careful advance planning are key. Factors including temperature, atmospheric conditions, and even satellite images of the Earth’s surface are considered. It’s complicated, but appealing to mathematicians like Ajne. Even with preparation, there’s a risk of falling in… So it’s best done in groups, for safety.

@@antonio39776 It's really incredible, Antony. I could listen to it for hours. Hard to describe what it sounds like unless you hear it. It's like muffled whale sounds or something.
Yes, we lived near a small lake and at times you could hear the ice boom from our yard on a quiet cold winter evening. We also skated and walked on the lake. It was about 10 feet deep in the middle and mostly 2 to 6 feet deep. Huge cracks would develop.
I love that sound. For those of you unfamiliar with thin ice, always wear "ice picks" -- always! It's the rule in Scandinavia. Had a guy go through the ice out on our lake. He saved himself in an instant 'cuz he had ice picks. He was out in a jiffy -- albeit cold and wet.

I just introduced my 9 year old grand daughter to these sounds thanks to your video. She is amazed and stunned. Thank you for making this video because so many will never live in places that get cold enough for this to happen. Even as a little kid living in Alaska I got to see the neat things extreme cold and water can do; I was even able to show my kids some of those things while living in Missouri in the 90s.
Jep showing a child how stupid and dangerous some people are... 😂
Going off subject from the video but here in the UK there was 4 little lads 6, 8, 10 and 11 that lost there lives falling through the ice. One of the lads legs fell through and as the others went over to help they all fell in. Just putting this out there to remind people that frozen lakes can be dangerous and please make sure kids know this. Kinda random but when I was young i used to go sliding across frozen ice, even though I was told how dangerous it was as a kid I never truly recognised it. Rest in peace😔
There needs to be more awareness of the dangers of ice.
I think it is absolutely irresponsible to put this video out without a massive disclaimer in front of it to not do this. I expect people to think that shallow ice is somewhat safe to skate or walk on now, while it is actually superdangerous if you fall in. There is people and animals dying each year and there is people testing the thickness of the ice thoroughly before deeming it safe. The recommended ice thickness by DLRG (German Live Saving Organization) for still lakes is 15 centimeters and for flowing water like rivers it is 20cm. Show what happens if people break into the ice, it is superdangerous. Frankly I expected more from National Geographic. Some kid or young adult will see this - mimic this and potentially die.
I enjoyed the lack of narration in this. Just hearing the lake sounds was all that was needed
Didn't even think about that but now that you say it, yeah, narration would have ruined this video!

What's really cool about those sounds is they propagate more quickly than the speed of sound in air. I used to throw firecrackers at (far thicker) ice and those fracture sounds would always precede the bang just enough to tell. It's subtle but if you throw further it's more noticeable.
We used to poke the ice and drop in firecrackers under water to listen to the pop and crackles near shore. Fun times back then

i started doing ice swimming in the pond at my house regularly. the thing that kills is if you cannot control the stress ur body experiences in ice cold water. if you can relax and shape ur mind ur just fine, even if you fall through the ice. all you have to do is dry up, get dry clothes and drink smth warm withing the next hour.

You should hear the sounds made by thick ice that is not covered by snow, on a really cold day at sunset. It's like these sounds, but fuller and with much more reverb. As it gets colder, the sound gets higher and higher in pitch, and if the ice is thick enough it truly sings.

I’ve fallen through ice when skating on ponds and lakes before. If you fall through, you should turn the way you were coming from, put your upper body on the ice, make your body parallel to the ice and kick your feet to propel yourself up onto the ice.
If it keeps breaking, keep swimming and break the ice in front of you with your arms if you are close to land (Moving towards the land, obviously)
If you cannot kick and propel yourself on to the ice, then rest your sleeves on the ice, and hopefully they will freeze onto the surface and you will be able to pull yourself up.
But really make sure you turn around and try to get onto the ice you were on before you fell in, because you know it’s solid and it most likely won’t break.
If there is a strong current, do not panic, and try to keep part of your body above water and hold on to the ice. It will be difficult to hoist yourself up so hopefully you have some friends around. If not, don’t panic and try to get yourself on top of the ice. Be patient.
It’s very surprising when it happens, and it is VERY fast. You fall straight through. So decisions must be made quickly, no room for panic.
J M Good to know. Thank you.
Your mention of the currents got me scared.
Sipu97 It isn’t often that there are strong currents, unless you’re on a river or certain parts of lakes/ponds, but like I said there’s no room for panic. Just remember your training, young padawan
ohevshalomel No problem, hopefully someone who reads this remembers it if they fall through thin ice!
J M Thanks, I guess :D It's a good thing that there aren't really any rivers where I live, only lots of lakes and I know where the currents are :) I think I would start to panic while underwater but after that I think the worst would be over. I saw my father slip on the edge of our hole in the ice a couple of years ago and like you said, it's very fast. He was up on the ice in no time, luckily.

Ze German would use *an article*. Lack of article makes Russian head-voice.
Wow didn't expect to see you here.
ice poseidon ?
Mr. Gold that's crazy because I did too, there is no other way.
I imagine swimming in those skates would be difficult.
you can quick release them
What?
You can't swim in that thick ice
Leif Vejby The point of this entire video was that the ice was thin...
@@retinaturner3284 Wasn't thin, it was almost two inches.
I remember those sounds from my youth in the Netherlands. Ice skating on black ice has become rare because of rising temperatures. But I have never skated on deep water with less than 7-10 cm (3-4 inches) of ice. And then you had/have to be lucky to be one of the firsts to have smooth ice (in an ice skating crazy country).
