Black ice is recently frozen and can be as thin as 2 inches! Do you think you want to try Nordic or wild ice skating? Make sure to try in groups if you do!
That is correct. We skated on a river with ice so thin that you had better not stop... or the depressed ice might break. Thankfully, the river wasn't very deep.

If you fall through, you should turn the way you were coming from, put your upper body on the ice, make your body parallel to the ice and kick your feet to propel yourself up onto the ice. If there is a strong current, do not panic, and try to keep part of your body above water and hold on to the ice. It will be difficult to hoist yourself up so hopefully you have some friends around. When I was a child I lived at the edge of a lake. We used to play hockey when the water froze. All the children learned these sounds. Our parents would teach us to listen to avoid these areas. I would never intentionally look to skate on ice like this, but it’s definitely an art form. Not for the faint of heart.
What's really cool about those sounds is they propagate more quickly than the speed of sound in air. I used to throw firecrackers at (far thicker) ice and those fracture sounds would always precede the bang just enough to tell. It's subtle but if you throw further it's more noticeable.
I always used to go down to the lake in the winter and throw rocks across the lake while the ice was thin. The sound it made kept me there for hours! It was so truly fascinating and such memories!
@mydriedtears lol. I live in Canada, my city has a big lake, and lots of canals, and every winter they put the flags on this one canal and people all go skating and play hockey on it. I grew up skating on frozen lakes lol. It blows my mind that a lot of people have never experienced such a thing, when it's just such a commonplace activity here lol
i started doing ice swimming in the pond at my house regularly. the thing that kills is if you cannot control the stress ur body experiences in ice cold water. if you can relax and shape ur mind ur just fine, even if you fall through the ice. all you have to do is dry up, get dry clothes and drink smth warm withing the next hour. ice bathing is actually very relaxing and calming, while also giving you an intense high, if the heads underwater. PS dieing due to cold in water, is one of the most comforting not cruel deaths.
When I was 16 or 17 I had a few opportunities to do this in New Jersey where I grew up. It was a surreal and beautiful experience; the ice was smooth as a sheet of glass and with little effort I was flying along a frozen lake in the early-morning sun. I remember feeling so alive.
You should hear the sounds made by thick ice that is not covered by snow, on a really cold day at sunset. It's like these sounds, but fuller and with much more reverb. As it gets colder, the sound gets higher and higher in pitch, and if the ice is thick enough it truly sings.
It was pretty shallow, u don't just die in cold water, a large adult should have 5 minutes where they're warm enough to save themself. Also he's Norwegian so he probably has protective blubber.
I love the fact that literally everyone in sweden always warn about skating on thin ice and now it’s like “hear the otherworldly sound of skating on thin ice” lol
Going off subject from the video but here in the UK there was 4 little lads 6, 8, 10 and 11 that lost there lives falling through the ice. One of the lads legs fell through and as the others went over to help they all fell in. Just putting this out there to remind people that frozen lakes can be dangerous and please make sure kids know this. Kinda random but when I was young i used to go sliding across frozen ice, even though I was told how dangerous it was as a kid I never truly recognised it. Rest in peace😔
I think it is absolutely irresponsible to put this video out without a massive disclaimer in front of it to not do this. I expect people to think that shallow ice is somewhat safe to skate or walk on now, while it is actually superdangerous if you fall in. There is people and animals dying each year and there is people testing the thickness of the ice thoroughly before deeming it safe. The recommended ice thickness by DLRG (German Live Saving Organization) for still lakes is 15 centimeters and for flowing water like rivers it is 20cm. Show what happens if people break into the ice, it is superdangerous. Frankly I expected more from National Geographic. Some kid or young adult will see this - mimic this and potentially die.
@@TheRealPacMan01 maybe they follow G I Joe training? purposefully miss them to herd the enemy back to their line so they all can live to fight another day.
when I was a kid we had a gym class about "how to get out if you walk through the ice" - essentially you jumped into a drilled up hole in the ice and had to climb out with safety-picks. I don't know if they still do it in Swedish schools but it sorta helped to have that knowledge as a kid if you would ever walk through the ice
He wouldn't be as confident as he is without falling through countless times and handling the situation like a pro. The video could have been better if it ended with him breaking through and proving that, though.
I think they mostly mean the process of researching for a good and suitable spot to skate in the right thickness which means a lot of calculations and a lot of mistakes as well. read the whole article on their site it's interesting :)
When learning long distance skating like this it is recommended you try going through the ice. It's done in a group, with all the safety procautions needed and then you willingly skate out on thin ice, fall through and experience the shock and the cold. That way, you won't panic as much when it happens for real. Because when skating on lakes like this, it's not a matter of if - but when, you fall through the ice.
I know it's a joke, but you don't need to put weight on ice for it to make those laser sounds. If you stay quiet and sit by a lake it will do it on it's own also, though not as often or as intense of course. So technically, it might not stop :D
This is one of those things like cave diving or wingsuiting that I'm sure is really fun and fulfilling when you pull it off but comes at the cost of potentially instantly killing you if you make the wrong move.
I was just thinking about this. Wingsuiting, skydiving, caving all get a big “nope” from me, but this… for some reason there’s something deliciously tempting about it, even though I’m aware it’s very dangerous.
Don’t think it’s a drone since it would be audible, unless the sound effects were dubbed in, timed properly, after the fact. But it could be, NatGeo is pretty high-budget.
Dante Lamar Problem is, I don’t see it as a joke. Anyhow, old comment, doesn’t matter anymore. Not looking for the good ol’ UA-cam comment drama. Have a good day, sir.
The trick is to go fast, that way the ice does not crack. The danger is that you can't stop, because then you go through. I have never done it myself, since ice like this is really rare these days :(, but my father has had the ice crack into stars under his skates back in the 70s.
If you stay close to the shore you will be fine. Also if you have sharp object with you like ski pole you can pull yourself out... if the ice is thick enough... and it's not. So stick close to the shore or prepare to break the ice all the way to the shore.
I remember these sounds along the creek we grew up on in Wisconsin. There was an older gentleman by the name of MacGowan, who through generations acted our first trusted sign the creek had frozen safely when we'd see him skating up the river. Often, throughout the season, we would travel out, with wonder and caution, onto the black ice into the middle where you could watch the river bubble passing below, taking care to listen to the ice. When a weakness split through, it was like a shotgun, and then a reverberating singing back across the frozen water. It was a sound like no other, unexpected and almost otherworldly, but it meant, without question, that we had not heeded the wisdom presented before us.
I was kind of assuming it was so thin that he had to maintain a minimum speed to keep from falling through... guess it wasn't that cool after all. Oh, well.
the world is beautiful in so many ways thank you national geographic and youtube for the content and platform for us to share the beauty of the world together.
I do this at night, then it gets slightly terrifying. Clear skies, moonlight, stars above, and the cracking sound the ice that breaks underneath your skates is fantastic.
That's not warning sounds. That's the song of the ice. If you watch closely, you'll see the ice sometimes wave up and down as he skates over it. All part of the beauty of skating on black ice.

When I was a child I lived at the edge of a lake. We used to play hockey when the water froze. All the children learned these sounds. Our parents would teach us to listen to avoid these areas. I would never intentionally look to skate on ice like this, but it’s definitely an art form. Not for the faint of heart.

@@killdizzle It makes sense how the thin ice could reverberate making that noise. But 10" thick? That doesn't make sense. I call BS.
What's really cool about those sounds is they propagate more quickly than the speed of sound in air. I used to throw firecrackers at (far thicker) ice and those fracture sounds would always precede the bang just enough to tell. It's subtle but if you throw further it's more noticeable.
We used to poke the ice and drop in firecrackers under water to listen to the pop and crackles near shore. Fun times back then

You should hear the sounds made by thick ice that is not covered by snow, on a really cold day at sunset. It's like these sounds, but fuller and with much more reverb. As it gets colder, the sound gets higher and higher in pitch, and if the ice is thick enough it truly sings.

I love the fact that literally everyone in sweden always warn about skating on thin ice and now it’s like “hear the otherworldly sound of skating on thin ice” lol
Im from Sweden and...what...4,5 cm is not thin ice...
There needs to be more awareness of the dangers of ice.
The wave-like movement of the ice is so evident at 1:44 wowwww

"Learning from your mistakes", would be a short, cold lesson.
when I was a kid we had a gym class about "how to get out if you walk through the ice" - essentially you jumped into a drilled up hole in the ice and had to climb out with safety-picks.
Jens Reuterberg Wow you had a very different gym class from mine
When learning long distance skating like this it is recommended you try going through the ice. It's done in a group, with all the safety procautions needed and then you willingly skate out on thin ice, fall through and experience the shock and the cold. That way, you won't panic as much when it happens for real. Because when skating on lakes like this, it's not a matter of if - but when, you fall through the ice.
Its all fun and games until the laser sounds continue even after he stops skating
I know it's a joke, but you don't need to put weight on ice for it to make those laser sounds. If you stay quiet and sit by a lake it will do it on it's own also, though not as often or as intense of course. So technically, it might not stop :D

The trick is to go fast, that way the ice does not crack. The danger is that you can't stop, because then you go through. I have never done it myself, since ice like this is really rare these days :(, but my father has had the ice crack into stars under his skates back in the 70s.
I go on ice to fish every winter. That sound is very common and happens with thick ice too from the pressure on it causing lots of little cracks.
