About JamesandKarla:
Hey everyone! We are husband-and-wife architectural/interior photographers based in NYC. We started our video channel to act an artistic intervention to help raise awareness of the importance of small independently-owned businesses and the unique character these shops add to the streets and neighborhoods of New York City.
In our videos we will showcase portraits of storefronts and shop owners in New York City & beyond and capture moments of city life that capture the spirit, energy and cultural diversity of individual neighborhoods. We also bring our dog, Hudson along whenever we can.
We made it our mission to thoroughly document unique 'mom-and-pop' stores when we began to notice the alarming rate at which they were disappearing. Our critically acclaimed books include “STORE FRONT: The Disappearing Face of New York”, “New York Nights”, “STORE FRONT II- A History Preserved” and “Broken Windows-Graffiti NYC”.
Come see the city & subscribe to our channel :)

Mr. Casey made me a custom stamp back in 1985 and it's still holding up.
That is so cool Noreen! We absolutely love this shop and its amazing selection of stamps!
I Love Hudson 💘
I love the Irish music ;) xxxxxxx
Bon Bon he always has Irish music playing in his shop. Extra Good ☘️!
Wow...beautiful wood rubber stamps. I hope I can visit someday. Nothing like that in SF...
My grandfather and my father used to make vulcanized rubber stamps in México but their method was different: they used some type of plaster, they used something called a cliché wich are fonts and different figures made out of lead or steel all those are in negative because once you have the form created you'd press it in the metal sheet with plaster on it that would set as a positive, then a piece of rubber sheet was put on top of the positive with a steel sheet on top of it because they would go onto a vulcanizing press.
Those rubber stamps were of the best quality you'd find in California and Baja California (México), their work was so good they had clients from the US, still to this date there are rubber stamps made in the 1950s and 1960s still in use, specially the generic ones or the stamps with rolling dates.
Unfortunately the plaster mix was discontinued in the 1990s and my dad had to stop making them, to this date we do not know the formula to make the plaster ourselves (my grandpa left a formula in a paper but we don't understand most of it). Their rubber stamps were costly so clients began to opt for cheap stamps that would last at most a few years.
Saludos.
That is so cool Mickel! We wish you were able to still make that special plaster needed for the stamp making process your family used in Mexico. It sounds so fascinating & We would have loved to come visit the shop and see it in person and purchase some of your family’s beautiful handmade stamps. We hope you can visit NYC and see Mr. Casey and his shop as it seems in many ways a lost art form. Thank you so much for watching and hope you also enjoy some of our other videos highlighting unique small businesses and places in NYC and beyond
Can’t believe I never heard of this shop!
It a real East Village gem! We would have shown you it when we walked this block together but it was closed at the time. You should have John make you a custom Barrio stamp!
I used to go when it was in west village. I need to go there!!
I used to live in the West Village in the late 90's and got my hair cut at Seventh Heaven near Bleecker. And next door at 55 Seventh Avenue was Casey's store. Just as quirky there as it is in the EV.
Oh yes nothing has changed from its beginning days! We are glad you remembered his shop and hope you can visit again!
Awesome. Love it.
What a great shop. Thanks for sharing.
Carole it truly is a remarkable shop! We find something to purchase every time we visit!
Keep it John! Wonderful
I been to another rubber stamp shop in NYC, many times and as some previous comments, I also never knew or heard of this fine rubber stamp shop.

Thank you so much for the love Lori! Please let the owner John know it was us that sent you. We are sure you will find lots of gems there!
I really enjoyed seeing this behind the scenes video. These are the types of stores that define the flavor of NYC. I'm feeling the need for some rubber stamps......who knew! I will check out his website.......love the Chrysler Bldg. stamp. A kiss on the tip of his nose for Hudson!
We are so glad you enjoyed watching Renee! We couldn’t agree more with you that this is the type of store which defines a neighborhood. We moved to the East Village because of s as lol the great quirky stores, art galleries, cafes restaurants and clubs it had. Although many have closed over the years, others have taken their place and it is truly a special neighborhood! And yes the Chrysler Building stamp is a beauty!
Oh and also forgot to say that Hudson sends big kisses to you!!
i want to do this for hobby and business I am a rubber stamps collector. There is poor information about how to begin with something like this. I love this video
We are glad you loved our video and would like to start your own rubber stamp making business. We hope you also enjoy watching some of our other videos highlighting unique small businesses in NYC!
Hi. I am also a collector of old stamps. I'm from Poland. I used to play stamps with the photopolymer method, but it is much easier to make them with the flash machine. Except that they are still expensive machines. I haven't tried laser cutting on a plotter yet.
So resourceful of you to find such an interesting rubber stamp shop. Thanks for this awesome video. Hug Hudson for me, pls!!!
This rubber stamp shop is a true East Village gem! Thank you so much for the great feedback and hugs for Hudson who sends you big kisses!
Can they make a rubber stamp of my dog's face?
Yes John certainly can! All you need is a good photo which he can turn into a black and white image to make the stamp. Definitely contact him. The website link is in our video description !
