The A plot should have been the whole episode. Can't this show just have a special that has a main focus anymore? They've done it before, like with the "Road to the North Pole" and "And There Were Fewer," and those are some of the best episodes.
the most confusing part for me was when Patrick said there's no way to get a pumpkin over 20 pounds but Joe was able to naturally grow one that was 307 pounds before it was destroyed
Me personally I found that part confusing in a funny way, but maybe that’s why I like family guy. It’s confusing in a funny way and my adhd benefits from it lollll
I'm surprised they never did the whole "Rupert comes alive for real" storyline until now, we see gags, but not an actual storyline that involves him coming alive, I wish it sticked longer thou.
I think that a cooler twist for the Joe subplot would've been a revelation where despite their disagreements Joe and Bonnie really love pumpkin contests and that they plotted together to have Bonnie pretend to seduce Joe's rival in order to prove that he was cheating and get him disqualified. And that way the punchline of them saying "It's just pumpkin stuff" would be that it really was just "pumpkin stuff" (maybe with that being their code to know if Bonnie finally figured out how he was cheating).
If only this happened I wouldn’t have put two and two together and came to the conclusion the writer have a cuckolding fetish and use Bonnie to express it. Seriously though that would have made for a better ending then just them hammering home the fact bonnie will sleep with anyone who’s name isn’t Joe Swanson.
Yes, it is really annoying. It's actually worse than what they do in futurama with Hermes. I mean, Bonnie little wants to go out and murder her husband. That tells you how bad it is.
@@Dashiell777 like at least in Futurama (not sure if it's got worse in the Hulu episodes) the wife still loves Hermes, it's just a case of barbatos slim being eye candy
i just kinda wish they'd just support each other again like in the earlier seasons. i hate watching bonnie be bitter about marrying joe and watching joe having to take the insults. it's not even funny, it's just sad. like how it was sad watching meg be abused by her family all the time.
Are we finally getting Brian’s “Faster than the speed of love” book, Rogers “Ricky Spanish” outfit on a clothes hanger, Mr Meeseeks Box, Duff beer can, and Rogers golden turd in your new room?
@@LydiaLovesTimelines I will say you didn’t mention that Chris using nunchucks isn’t just an oddly specific joke but also a call back to a previous episode where Peter looks out the window to see Chris using Nunchucks as Peter’s past self once did. So it shows that Chris still uses nunchucks and has improved upon the skill
In honor of Scoobtober, I’d love to see a Scooby-Doo timeline. As well as either a Scooby Snack, Scooby’s collar, one of the Mystery Machine’s flowers or a toy replica of the Mystery Machine in your new set up!
Some of the moments in this episode for me were when stewie was talking to Brian about them being sunny and Cher I spied Lisa Simpson Easter egg which made me cackle and then a scene that didn’t land for me was the scene when after Rupert came alive he said he was gonna eat Doritos and then they had to bring in darn commercial voice which really sometimes wazzes me off. From the minute Rupert said he was gonna eat Doritos. I knew that voice was coming but either way nice to see the griffins again.
I think you should definitely add the butt scratcher and also the rake that always hits sideshow bob in the face, a gold fish bowl as a nod to Klaus, Louise’s hat from bob’s burgers. I also want to reiterate someone’s desire for a miniature mystery machine, and/or scooby’s collar.
For your background I’m thinking maybe a crabby patty on the table , B-mo on the shelf, a poster of Terrance and Philip on the wall and somewhere one of those things to put pencils in but have a wand from fairly odd parents added in to it?
There's this joke in season 10, episode 5 "Back To The Pilot" where after Brian stops 9/11 he insists the world is a better place for it, so him and Stewie go 5 years into the future where they see Family Guy has become extremely streamlined, formulaic, and "lazy". Peter holds up some double sided tape and says that should give them about 7 minutes of material, which should get them to the Meg kissing story, Cleveland comes in says it's nice to be back of Spooner street, and then Peter announces "Here's a cutaway." Cut to Peter in a blank white space, he says "Matthew McConaughey is terrible." and that's the cutaway joke. This Halloween episode feels like that, not necessarily lazy, cause it's not, but just incredibly streamlined/cut down. Like it should've been an 45min - hour long special, but due to it being the standard episode runtime they have to jam everything in as quickly as possible, there's no time for it to breathe.
For your background: maybe a mini fridge with duff beer, Pawtucket Patriot Beer and a can of Slurm would be cool, although I don't know if you could get copyright problems with that.
I have some problems with this episode too. It felt too much like a regular season episode. They should of made it double the length (45 mins), changed the intro, and experimented more with the stories. I agree, the Rupert story could of become something scarier with blood and gore, and I don't think the Joe pumpkin story is needed at all, even though it is related to Halloween. When I first heard of this special, I was thinking the same as you. I was hoping for a "Treehouse of Horror" deal but they were like nah. Great video, Lydia. I enjoyed your latest review.
But as Lydia says, Family Guy does crazy stuff all the time. That makes it difficult for them to do anything extreme enough to break the mold. In this episode, they have Rupert coming alive, which certainly is not something we'd see in real life. In a normal show, that would be unique enough.
I’m surprised you didn’t love this episode! From a lore perspective, we got some really important information. We learned Peter’s exact weight is 307 lbs and Rupert’s real name is Jerry
This might sound like a strange thing to put in your Back Room. But I was wanting to know if you could put a picture of Mr. Weed Peter's old boss.. I know he only appeared in the first couple seasons of the show, but I thought he was really funny. And I. Missed him and I thought it would be a great throw back😅❤
I like the idea of Stewie bringing Rupert to life and him trying to kill Brian, but yeah, like you and maybe some other viewers, I was expecting more. As for the whole “Joe’s giant pumpkin” plot, doesn’t that remind everyone of a certain Hey Arnold episode?
You need a little Larry the leopard from The Cleveland Show for the background room!!! Such an underrated show and I love how much you reference it in these review!
One thing I don’t like about this episode is that they’ve done the Rupert plot so many times in different fonts (Penelope, the turtle, the terminators, etc)
Such a shame that this ended up being such an underwhelming episode! I could be wrong but to me this is a sign of Family Guy possibly moving exclusively to Hulu like Futurama did when it came back. It feels like fox has other shows that are its priority right now And I think the rerun still stream pretty well for them. Anyway, yeah, I can’t say that I’m really surprised that this episode wasn’t that good that’s why I haven’t watched Family Guy in the number of years regularly. Although being such a fan of your work does make me wanna get back into it more like I keep saying all the time. Thanks as always to you and James for the hard work, Lydia!
Things to add to the set!! The Simpsons: Bart’s slingshot Family Guy: Rupert American Dad: Stan’s gun South Park: Cheezy Poofs Bob’s burgers: a burger or Gene’s megaphone
You should put a Krusty the clown doll from treehouse of horror a meeseeks box from Rick and Morty and a scratcher from family guy in your new backround
I really hope they do an episode where Joe actually leaves Bonnie and show in the end Joe is doing incredibly well and find someone better, while Bonnie is doing terrible and struggling. She is the worst and most annoying character then Lois....
I have a question and a suggestion. First, what is your favorite Chimpokomon from South Park?🤔🤔🤔 Next, whatever your answer to the question is should be next to Rupert on your new desk. (Congrats on getting a new desk by the way, curious to see what other references you put on it🐈⬛)
I honestly love the idea of Rupert coming back, and the B plot being Joe's pumpkin.. but when I saw it was still 23 mins I knew then it was gonna be a normal Family guy episode. I was hoping for it to be longer and a bit more creative. I felt like Seth and the rest of his team pretty much got lazy with it. Yeah I'm gonna still watch it but still... Lol 😊
For an idea for something in your new room background, how about a large wall portrait featuring characters whose voice actors have passed away to honour there memory and show they will always be apart of us in these shows.
Items Id like to see in the new room: Lion-O's gauntlet (Thundercats) Orko's hat (He-Man) The Number One Dime (Duck Tales) Bottle of Gummiberry juice (Gummi Bears) Brontosaurus Ribs (Flintstones) Picanic Basket (Yogi Bear) I know youve not really covered these shows at all but I think the room might look good with a touch of 80s in there 😁
The highlight for me was hearing British actor Sir Derek Jacobi as Rupert especially since i know him best as the Narrator of In the Night Garden so it was rather refreshing seeing him play a villain in the form of Rupert
It really is apparent that Brian really can’t do anything in the show now if it involves stewie. his whole thing in the episode is that he realizes that stewie is his only friend which by that point shows how far the series has come when the showrunners have now forgotten that Peter and Brian were the best friend duo of the show since the conception.
Before I properly watch this, I must say I'm astonished to see Herbert The Perv back. I also want to say that if having to rush these reviews is too much for you, don't do the reviews because I think I can speak for all your followers when I say that the last thing we want is to cause you unnecessary stress. I can just imagine how your future will be there probably one day we’ll make a Chuckie crossover
this is easily my favorite family guy special so far, however rupert trying to kill brian was an interesting idea because while watching it i thought they were gonna kill off brian again.
I suppose this Halloween episode special is okay though it was only a 22 minute long usual instead of a 45 or 50 minute special! If only this series needs new writers and maybe new animaters. But i still give this a A+
You should add Bill Cypher from gravity falls into your background. Hes kinda known for showing up everywhere so it would be really fitting. (Hidden would be best)
Haven't laughed this hard at a family guy episode for awhile. That part where Stewie sings cher while crying was gold and literally the best joke they had in the years
I uhhh... I have seen a husky kid in a shop going HAM with nunchucks specifically around Halloween. My shop has a tools, archery/hunting and air weapons part that I work in, we sell katana and nunchuck too of course. I last year around this time handed a kid some foam training nunchuck starters and he went absolutely ham with them doing tricks, going behind the back and over the shoulder etc cus he knew how to use them but didn't say right away. So yeah I HAVE seen such an oddly specific scene as that lmao.
I also think given how Joes rival was called Patrick I wish it was Lois's brother Patrick returning as he was voiced by movie star Downey Jnr. in his first appearance having Howerton voice a redesigned Patrick would be a neat callback
Kinda wished that they did more with this special. Like since it's a Hulu exclusive, they could have made this an uncensored episode and not worry about TV censorship. Just let out a few F bombs or something. Something that sets it apart from a regular Family Guy episode... This just feels like it was made to be aired on Fox until Disney decided just to dump it on Hulu and call it a Hulu special. After this, i dont have high hopes for the Christmas special..
if it was the first or second time the joke was included, i would've actually enjoyed the whole bonnie cheats on joe bit. the shot of bonnie stroking mccloksey's chest and saying "its just pumpkin stuff" did get a giggle out of me, but the fact this is the 20th cheating gag just dampens the entire joke imo
I completely agree with you. When I heard they were going to do some exclusive episodes for streaming I got excited, especially because in the buildup to the release they said they can actually do stuff in these episodes that they can’t do on TV. Honestly the only “offensive” thing in this episode was the Herbert scene and they’ve done a lot worse in regular episode episodes. So now my hopes for the Christmas episode that’s going to be streaming exclusive are not as high.
“Are those Yeezy’s?” “They’re cheaper now” Was the best part. I enjoyed the episode though. However my favorite “Rupert is alive” moment was when Rupert had a muscular body and he and Stewie were having fun at the beach.
This is wild. i saw the poster for this, and every time i clicked it, it took me to the other Family Guy Halloween episode where Stewie doesn't know what Halloween is
Honestly I really liked this episode, but I do see where it falls flat compared to older Halloween specials. But compared to most of last season, I do think this was still slightly a step up. I mean, Stewie as Cher just made the episode for me, especially when he was singing 'If I Could Turn Back Time' while drowning Rupert 😂 . But yeah, the pumpkin plot was a dud, for sure.
I don’t know, I think people forget during the early seasons that Joe could get his walking ability back through surgery, but Bonnie stated she wanted her husband back and tried to cripple him again by shooting his spine, she was so bad at aiming that he took the gun and did it to himself. Point is he could walk if he wanted to, but we don’t see any coming back to this idea, he preferred to go to Niagara falls and felt miserable instead
I wonder if there's going to be a Christmas Hulu Exclusive Special, same goes for any kind of holiday like Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Spring Break and Easter. I mean due to all of the South Park Exclusive Specials on Paramount, Simpson Exclusive Specials on Disney Plus, Harley Quinn Exclusive Specials on Max and that one Velma Halloween Special exclusively on Max, and sort of the series finale of the show due to it being cancelled, maybe Family Guy could have Hulu Exclusive Specials, same goes for Kite Man Hell Yeah, X-Men 97 and Bob's Burgers.
I feel like this episode would have improved significantly if it was Joe's son Kevin growing the pumpkin for the contest as having taken up gardening as a way to soothe his PTSD
I enjoyed this episode but was disappointed it wasn't an hour long. When they called it a special i just assumed it would be longer than a regular episode
The A plot should have been the whole episode. Can't this show just have a special that has a main focus anymore? They've done it before, like with the "Road to the North Pole" and "And There Were Fewer," and those are some of the best episodes.

Rupert with a knife reminds me of the game naughty bear for some reason
Found your channel recently and really enjoying the vids❤
I completely agree with you. When I heard they were going to do some exclusive episodes for streaming I got excited, especially because in the buildup to the release they said they can actually do stuff in these episodes that they can’t do on TV. Honestly the only “offensive” thing in this episode was the Herbert scene and they’ve done a lot worse in regular episode episodes. So now my hopes for the Christmas episode that’s going to be streaming exclusive are not as high.
“Are those Yeezy’s?”
“They’re cheaper now”
Was the best part.
I wanna see a mini petercopter
ooo! i need some rick snd morty rep in the background. how about a plumbus?
Bart's skateboard in the background would be cool
Halloween on Spooner Street will always be the best Family Guy Halloween special in my opinion.
I also really like that tom tucker cutaway!!!!
I guess this is the Ted animated series they were talking about
I feel like this episode would have improved significantly if it was Joe's son Kevin growing the pumpkin for the contest as having taken up gardening as a way to soothe his PTSD
Brian already had a fake mustache. Remember "where's my money?" They had a missed opportunity to reference that
I enjoyed this episode but was disappointed it wasn't an hour long. When they called it a special i just assumed it would be longer than a regular episode
A frame photo of your Simpsons avatar.
A model of the petercopter would be fun to see in the background.
Put a stewie catchphrase like “What the deuce”
