I actually really like what they've done with Quagmire. In recent seasons, they've made his bedroom life less of a defining characteristic and actually made him a competent, interesting person as well. I think this also puts less of a negative stigma on unconventional thinks, which I think is a great thing 🙂

Flanderisation. Characters getting more flawed means more conflict which means more stories. I'm fine with them doing that but it's best when they change direction at some point to make that character start becoming a better person.

I think it's slightly unfair to compare Brian and Quagmire crush on Lois since Quagmire loved her before peter and her were dating while Brian was rescued knowing that is Peters wife. Quagmire just didn't move on for a LONG time

I know that many people absolutely loathe that episoe with Quagmire's sister but when it came out it really helped me at a time where I was a young guy with an heroin addiction stuck in a physically and emotionally abusive and toxic relationship. I cannot watch it without crying.
I'm happy they changed Quagmire for the better. I have noticed this. He still has his bad moments but episodes like last season episode when he and Lois went to a reunion together. He didn't pull any moves even though that was his trait since the early years. And surprisingly lois wanted Glenn to hit on her!! Not a good moment for her in that episode.
To be fair there was an episode where he hooked up with that woman from the apple store and she turned into more of a freak and abusive than him and she smacked the heck out of him. Of course they never had a "Oh my gosh that was horrible I realize how bad I've been to women and I need to correct my behaviors" moment. But he's also shown a respect for the sanctity of marriage, I recall a rant he spewed to Brian about how marriage is a sacred vow and it should never be trampled upon hence why he had never gotten married. He didn't want to bastardize that union, he knew how he was, and he made a conscious choice to stand behind his morals. He's definitely become a far more enjoyable character as he's grown.

Yes, but (as far as I can remember) he never tried to force himself on her or have an affair with her except for times when he had her consent such as when Peter got amnesia. Brian on the other hand has repeatedly confessed to Lois and sexually harassed her several times. I don’t condone Quagmire’s actions, but I don’t believe he’s as bad as Brian in that field.

Imo Quagmire's best episode was when him and the guys traveled to korea, where it was revealed he used to be an actor there and had a genuine relationship with his co-star. It proved Quagmire has the capability to settle down and stick to one woman. I also like how his addiction stems from his abusive upbringing his mother inflicted on him, showing he's not just an addict for the sake of being an addict

I'm honestly surprised that Quagmire's change in character has continuity. Because while Peter and Lois becoming the worst parents in history has no turning point to where it got to that point, Quagmire with a pet cat is a clear turning point in character. That and he actually acknowledges that he was a shitty person and wanted to change that vs just, "Yup, this is the character now." Which is wild when after so many seasons, continuity is meaningless. Also, I think the episode that acknowledged Quagmire in the Me Too Era was the one where he starts dating a woman who treats him like he treated women. I think it was called "Quagmire's Quagmire."
I think Quagmire has become more likable the last couple of seasons. He no longer is just sexual innuendo jokes and he has more of a personality. We actually got to see why the other characters in the show like him and are willing to hang out with him. Before he got a cat, it seemed weird that he and Cleveland were best friends.
Quagmire went through Lois's trash for more then just toenail clippings and hair. He also took her discarded makeup sponges and shoved them down his throat which he mentions when they are searching for evidence to find out if Peter killed Lois in the two part episodes where Stewie kills her (or at least tries to).
One of my favorite scenes that showed how much his character has evolved was the one where he is powerwalking with Donna exchanging sassy oneliners about people disrespecting them. Everything that was great. He was doing some very healthy activity aside from sex with an attractive black woman, clearly respecting her and being friendly, confirmed they do it regularly, and the icing that it is Cleveland's wife; the guy who broke up with Loretta because of her affair with Glenn bringing out her worst character. Donna likely shot down his advances with her no-nonsense character, but if that happened let's be honest, them remaining friends is something the old Glenn wouldn't even consider.
I watch the Quagmire/ Brian confrontation once a while because it was amazing and exactly how I felt about Brian without being able to put it into words myself.
It also doesn't make sense considering everything Quagmire has done until then. All his words to Brian can be used on himself. It's like the writers forgot which character was saying all those things to Brian
I think fleshing out Quagmire this way was one of the smartest move the show runners had made. The biggest cases in point would have to be his relationship with his family - his mom, his (other) mom, his sister, and his daughters. In every episode where either of those family members are featured, we see exponential growth in Quagmire overall.

His creepiest line is when the Griffin's need him to babysit the kids. He opens the door in a robe and agrees to see them that late at night but he says this: um well sure but according to Meagan's Law I'm obligated to tell you that...you know what nevermind c'mon in!!! When I first saw that I laughed really hard...like wtf!?!
I love Quagmire. I don't know how Family Guy makes the most outrageous predator somehow lovable. I think they made the right call scrapping the "me too movement" idea. I don't see how they could've dealt with it and not gotten rid of Quagmire completely. I also share his hatred for that pretentious fleabag. Ugh, he's such a douche! I can't stand him. Btw, Glenn wasn't wearing an ear piece when Lois helped him during his date. They were texting.
They could have make him meet one of his victims and finding out how her enitre life was changed because of being r ap ed. He is already portraied as a pretty empathic person towards people around him, so he could have empathy and feel bad for his actions in some settings. For example, if this person was one of Lois'es friends, and she could tell him about her problems not knowing that he was the one who did it. So when the victim meet him, she'll get scared and reveal the truth, but have her reasons not to go to police (to not send him to jail. For example, she could have a public career or a carrer in a dominated by men field). After that he could have understand what he was actually doing and suffer the conseqenses in the best traditions of "crime and punishment", wherr the worst punishment is not jail, but living with understendmand of what you have done.
I always thought his "me too" episode was the one where he met Sonya, the lady who locked Glenn in her storage shed at the end of the episode. I guess it would have been on a more sensitive topic than violence, which makes sense. Maybe he would have been in an encounter with a woman he didn't like, so that would have been the subject of the episode. Or maybe a past victim telling him how he hurt them.
I wish they gave a character arc to Brian where he betters himself as a person… or dog after seeing how Quagmire has. Brian finally considers how awful of a dog he has been, and apologizes to many of the people he has wronged at the end of the character arc. Some forgive him, some don’t, and he completely understands why. Oh well, iT’s JuSt A cArToOn AfTeR aLl.
Also in the episode where Quagmire had a crazy girlfriend she actually told him to have sex with Ida and later into the episode he said “ my dad might be pregnant”
Quagmire is definitely my favorite character, partially because he grew from his original personality. He’s the only main character in the show to do that(Stewie could also be counted, but I miss the evil baby personality).
Honestly I'm super happy to see Quagmire becoming a more human fleshed out character. He's always been one of my favorites, as problematic as he is, but seeing him having growth; being called on his BS, giving him layers... all that is great development. Doesn't excuse all his bullshit, of course, but at least there are some reasons to point to and go 'Ah That's Why, now let's work on it.', as oppose to it... just being there. Now all I need is to see Meg get this development. Then I'll have both my favs being better off.
Though tbh, I think it is hard to judge current Quagmire based on early Quagmire, just due to how much of a different character he has become. He pretty much took over Brians original role, which makes their rivalry even more funny.

The writers forget a lot of things about the characters that happened in earlier seasons/episodes like the recent Brian being afraid of the shower when he’s been shown numerous times taking them with no problems, Stewie not knowing how to read but knowing how in previous episodes. Then there’s Quagmire and his new “equipment” but in the episode where Ida got the surgery and went to the Griffin’s, she says that it was still there but they just inverted it (prompting Stewie to try that). So what does Quagmire get?
The ad transition is so funny. You said "he probably got so many viruses" and I went from thinking STDs, to going "oh weird to talk about his computer health lol" then it hit me. XD
I will never forget the implication that Quagmire found a cheerleader bound and gagged in a bathroom stall and decided to take advantage of her. Still one of the most shocking moments in the entire show.

Family Guy to me anyway, is a show that’s devoid of character development and is all just mean spirited jokes and tasteless shock humor; however Peter's friends, Cleveland, Quagmire, and Joe are characters that I have adored throughout the show’s history.
He started off Flanderized. So the only thing they could do to Flanderize him is to do it to the only quirk he had: Characterization. They Flanderized full circle.

I hate his rivalry with Brian i get it’s supposed to be a mouthpiece for how they’ve made brian’s character horrible (Because they don’t need to fix it if they’re aware i guess) but his reasons are incredibly hypocritical and it’s not treated as an interesting relationship, it’s just Quagmire being treated as a complete superior being who can’t even act civil to Brian.
At first I hated the changes to quagmire he wasn't funny anymore but then as I rewatched the episodes that focused on him and realized they tried to give him so nuance and make him more than a running joke.

There's SO MANY different avenues to explore and I don't think they could explain it comfortably in a single minute episode (or a multi-parter, for that) without stepping on toes either way: false accusations, the film industry, the sex scandals, etc.

First time watching this channel. It’s so odd to see Family Guy getting the kind of content you see for The Simpsons all over. Really interesting to see more! Also the flying attendant look it’s super cool!
It’s nice that they’ve given Quagmire more depth, but I do miss the good old days where Quagmire would pop up, make a sexual innuendo followed by the always hilarious, “Giggity Giggity Goo!” Who else but Quagmire?
People who are upset they phased out the rape jokes with Quagmire are a very worrying subset of the Family Guy fandom, one I hope the show calls out (they've called out other fans for less). He can still be hilariously perverted and not be a rapist. A lot of characters in other media are. Good video, I just wish you also examined the evolution of his relationship with Meg. Started off as just another perverted joke, then he went after her but was prevented by Peter (because fuck Meg's agency, am I right? Sorry, the ending of that episode was bad and Peter & Lois are still bad parents.) so they got that plot point out of the way… but then for the next 3 seasons they had one episode each where he was nice to Meg, even helping save her life in A Fistful Of Meg. It looked like the writers were going somewhere with this, but then that petered out (no pun intended). Since then there were some scattered indicators of being on friendly terms but nothing significant until Family Cat. And now I guess we just wait until next season. I really wish the writers would explore their relationship more, now that Quagmire has shown actual care towards her several times, now that their past interactions are even more politically incorrect, and how does Meg actually feel about of all this anyway? I keep hoping for an episode about that but last season let me down, I fear next season will too. Oh well, Family Guy writers are gonna do what they do, even if it sucks. :/ Oh yeah, and they unknowingly got married while in disguise in Con Heiress and it never got brought up again.

I like how the show expanded Quagmire's character beyond him just being sex obsessed, making him more of a 3-dimensional character. Such as showing that he loves cats, how much he cares for those he cares about (such as his sister when he killed her abusive boyfriend), that he cares about meg and has helped her by giving her advice from time to time (ik he tried sleeping w her but still), etc. By them doing this, it makes Quagmire a more interesting character and that he isn't just a pervert, that there's more to him than you might think.

Personally, I never understood the intensity of the rivalry between cat people and dog people cartoons love to show. I can understand having a preference for one over the other, but this sort of passionate hatred is ridicules. I'm a cat person, they're much more low maintenance than dogs and their simplification as snooty villains is kind of sad; my cat might as well be a dog for how much she comes up to me wanting pets, treats and cuddles. That said, dogs are pretty cool, too. They're loyal and fun to play with. My being a cat person doesn't mean I'm scheming to steal your dog or am clinching my teeth in degust whenever I see one committing the heinous crime of existing in my vicinity. In Brian's case, Glen gets a pass because he's basically human in all but appearances, but liking cats doesn't mean you have to have a seething hatred for dogs.

Of course they never had a "Oh my gosh that was horrible I realize how bad I've been to women and I need to correct my behaviors" moment. But he's also shown a respect for the sanctity of marriage, I recall a rant he spewed to Brian about how marriage is a sacred vow and it should never be trampled upon hence why he had never gotten married. He didn't want to bastardize that union, he knew how he was, and he made a conscious choice to stand behind his morals. He's definitely become a far more enjoyable character as he's grown.
He still sleeps with married women so not much respecting marriage.

Yes, but (as far as I can remember) he never tried to force himself on her or have an affair with her except for times when he had her consent such as when Peter got amnesia. Brian on the other hand has repeatedly confessed to Lois and sexually harassed her several times. I don’t condone Quagmire’s actions, but I don’t believe he’s as bad as Brian in that field.

I'm honestly surprised that Quagmire's change in character has continuity. Because while Peter and Lois becoming the worst parents in history has no turning point to where it got to that point, Quagmire with a pet cat is a clear turning point in character. That and he actually acknowledges that he was a shitty person and wanted to change that vs just, "Yup, this is the character now." Which is wild when after so many seasons, continuity is meaningless.
Also, I think the episode that acknowledged Quagmire in the Me Too Era was the one where he starts dating a woman who treats him like he treated women. I think it was called "Quagmire's Quagmire."
I think Quagmire has become more likable the last couple of seasons. He no longer is just sexual innuendo jokes and he has more of a personality. We actually got to see why the other characters in the show like him and are willing to hang out with him. Before he got a cat, it seemed weird that he and Cleveland were best friends.
Quagmire went through Lois's trash for more then just toenail clippings and hair. He also took her discarded makeup sponges and shoved them down his throat which he mentions when they are searching for evidence to find out if Peter killed Lois in the two part episodes where Stewie kills her (or at least tries to).
One of my favorite scenes that showed how much his character has evolved was the one where he is powerwalking with Donna exchanging sassy oneliners about people disrespecting them. Everything that was great. He was doing some very healthy activity aside from sex with an attractive black woman, clearly respecting her and being friendly, confirmed they do it regularly, and the icing that it is Cleveland's wife; the guy who broke up with Loretta because of her affair with Glenn bringing out her worst character.
Donna likely shot down his advances with her no-nonsense character, but if that happened let's be honest, them remaining friends is something the old Glenn wouldn't even consider.
I watch the Quagmire/ Brian confrontation once a while because it was amazing and exactly how I felt about Brian without being able to put it into words myself.
It also doesn't make sense considering everything Quagmire has done until then. All his words to Brian can be used on himself. It's like the writers forgot which character was saying all those things to Brian

I think fleshing out Quagmire this way was one of the smartest move the show runners had made. The biggest cases in point would have to be his relationship with his family - his mom, his (other) mom, his sister, and his daughters. In every episode where either of those family members are featured, we see exponential growth in Quagmire overall.
In Family guy, you can only really look up to Ida's bravery and Jillian's kindness and that's about it.

I love Quagmire. I don't know how Family Guy makes the most outrageous predator somehow lovable. I think they made the right call scrapping the "me too movement" idea. I don't see how they could've dealt with it and not gotten rid of Quagmire completely. I also share his hatred for that pretentious fleabag. Ugh, he's such a douche! I can't stand him. Btw, Glenn wasn't wearing an ear piece when Lois helped him during his date. They were texting.
They could have make him meet one of his victims and finding out how her enitre life was changed because of being r ap ed. He is already portraied as a pretty empathic person towards people around him, so he could have empathy and feel bad for his actions in some settings. For example, if this person was one of Lois'es friends, and she could tell him about her problems not knowing that he was the one who did it. So when the victim meet him, she'll get scared and reveal the truth, but have her reasons not to go to police (to not send him to jail. For example, she could have a public career or a carrer in a dominated by men field). After that he could have understand what he was actually doing and suffer the conseqenses in the best traditions of "crime and punishment", wherr the worst punishment is not jail, but living with understendmand of what you have done.
I always thought his "me too" episode was the one where he met Sonya, the lady who locked Glenn in her storage shed at the end of the episode. I guess it would have been on a more sensitive topic than violence, which makes sense. Maybe he would have been in an encounter with a woman he didn't like, so that would have been the subject of the episode. Or maybe a past victim telling him how he hurt them.
At the time Quagmire made that roast, he did nearly everything he accused Brian of to worse degrees.
I wish they gave a character arc to Brian where he betters himself as a person… or dog after seeing how Quagmire has. Brian finally considers how awful of a dog he has been, and apologizes to many of the people he has wronged at the end of the character arc. Some forgive him, some don’t, and he completely understands why. Oh well, iT’s JuSt A cArToOn AfTeR aLl.
Also in the episode where Quagmire had a crazy girlfriend she actually told him to have sex with Ida and later into the episode he said “ my dad might be pregnant”
Quagmire is definitely my favorite character, partially because he grew from his original personality. He’s the only main character in the show to do that(Stewie could also be counted, but I miss the evil baby personality).

Honestly I'm super happy to see Quagmire becoming a more human fleshed out character. He's always been one of my favorites, as problematic as he is, but seeing him having growth; being called on his BS, giving him layers... all that is great development. Doesn't excuse all his bullshit, of course, but at least there are some reasons to point to and go 'Ah That's Why, now let's work on it.', as oppose to it... just being there.
Now all I need is to see Meg get this development. Then I'll have both my favs being better off.
Though tbh, I think it is hard to judge current Quagmire based on early Quagmire, just due to how much of a different character he has become. He pretty much took over Brians original role, which makes their rivalry even more funny.

The writers forget a lot of things about the characters that happened in earlier seasons/episodes like the recent Brian being afraid of the shower when he’s been shown numerous times taking them with no problems, Stewie not knowing how to read but knowing how in previous episodes. Then there’s Quagmire and his new “equipment” but in the episode where Ida got the surgery and went to the Griffin’s, she says that it was still there but they just inverted it (prompting Stewie to try that). So what does Quagmire get?

Family Guy to me anyway, is a show that’s devoid of character development and is all just mean spirited jokes and tasteless shock humor; however Peter's friends, Cleveland, Quagmire, and Joe are characters that I have adored throughout the show’s history.

I hate his rivalry with Brian i get it’s supposed to be a mouthpiece for how they’ve made brian’s character horrible (Because they don’t need to fix it if they’re aware i guess) but his reasons are incredibly hypocritical and it’s not treated as an interesting relationship, it’s just Quagmire being treated as a complete superior being who can’t even act civil to Brian.

At first I hated the changes to quagmire he wasn't funny anymore but then as I rewatched the episodes that focused on him and realized they tried to give him so nuance and make him more than a running joke.
He's the opposite of Brian. He became a better character and less creepy whereas Brian turned into a worse character who is way creepier.

There's SO MANY different avenues to explore and I don't think they could explain it comfortably in a single minute episode (or a multi-parter, for that) without stepping on toes either way: false accusations, the film industry, the sex scandals, etc.

People who are upset they phased out the rape jokes with Quagmire are a very worrying subset of the Family Guy fandom, one I hope the show calls out (they've called out other fans for less). He can still be hilariously perverted and not be a rapist. A lot of characters in other media are. Good video, I just wish you also examined the evolution of his relationship with Meg. Started off as just another perverted joke, then he went after her but was prevented by Peter (because fuck Meg's agency, am I right? Sorry, the ending of that episode was bad and Peter & Lois are still bad parents.) so they got that plot point out of the way… but then for the next 3 seasons they had one episode each where he was nice to Meg, even helping save her life in A Fistful Of Meg. It looked like the writers were going somewhere with this, but then that petered out (no pun intended). Since then there were some scattered indicators of being on friendly terms but nothing significant until Family Cat. And now I guess we just wait until next season. I really wish the writers would explore their relationship more, now that Quagmire has shown actual care towards her several times, now that their past interactions are even more politically incorrect, and how does Meg actually feel about of all this anyway? I keep hoping for an episode about that but last season let me down, I fear next season will too. Oh well, Family Guy writers are gonna do what they do, even if it sucks. :/

I like how the show expanded Quagmire's character beyond him just being sex obsessed, making him more of a 3-dimensional character. Such as showing that he loves cats, how much he cares for those he cares about (such as his sister when he killed her abusive boyfriend), that he cares about meg and has helped her by giving her advice from time to time (ik he tried sleeping w her but still), etc. By them doing this, it makes Quagmire a more interesting character and that he isn't just a pervert, that there's more to him than you might think.
Maybe their trying to give Quagmire a spin off by experimenting with the character.

Personally, I never understood the intensity of the rivalry between cat people and dog people cartoons love to show. I can understand having a preference for one over the other, but this sort of passionate hatred is ridicules. I'm a cat person, they're much more low maintenance than dogs and their simplification as snooty villains is kind of sad; my cat might as well be a dog for how much she comes up to me wanting pets, treats and cuddles. That said, dogs are pretty cool, too. They're loyal and fun to play with. My being a cat person doesn't mean I'm scheming to steal your dog or am clinching my teeth in degust whenever I see one committing the heinous crime of existing in my vicinity. In Brian's case, Glen gets a pass because he's basically human in all but appearances, but liking cats doesn't mean you have to have a seething hatred for dogs.
As a cat owner myself Quagmire nailed how addicted we are to our 😸
