When John Deere's iMatch . . . Doesn't. (It's like when 'plug-n-play' doesn't plug-n-play!)

  • The John Deere iMatch system is designed to enable the operator to drop-n-swap a host of 3-point hitch attachments with ease.
    So how is it that a brand-new John Deere iMatch hitch doesn't couple up with a brand-new John Deere fully hydraulic blade?

    I wanted to comment on your snowplow ride along video but you have comments turned off. So I'm going in the back door.
    First; you brought back many memories from when I was young. Only difference is we had a Ford 9N.
    Second; you may have saved my THOUSANDS by an off hand comment about front chains on you JD. I called my JD dealer and was adamant that you should NEVER put front chains on a JD 4WD tractor.
    Thank you.

      Huge thanks for letting me know about the comments being turned off. Have corrected that - and found it as well on some other videos. Really appreciate you pointing that out.
      And on the tire chains - what a coincidence - just had the conversation with my dealer today and got the same advice. Stay away from the front chains or exactly like you said - risk blowing that front differential, twisting up an axle or other really ugly and expensive stuff.
      They do stock them for those who insist beyond all practicality.
      Not knowing any better years ago, I ran front chains on an old snow plow truck I had - and you guessed it. Goodbye axle and u-joint.

    Instead of grinding down the nut , would it have worked to trim back about 1/4" - 1/2" of the blades top link attachment area (to pin's double gusset plate) to allow proper iMatch connection?

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  Рік тому

      That would definitely have been a better solution - and one that my dealer did - no charge when the JD went back in (c/w blade) for some warranty work.
      Huge thanks for tuning in and being part of my journey and the shared wisdom of the community!

    Hi Howard!! 😀😀
    Good to see you buddy!!
    It stinks when quick hitches aren't quick.
    I'm glad you were able to grind enough off the nut for it to fit. I might have considered grinding the bracket on the blade if the quick hitch didn't bother on anything else.
    Glad you were able to make it work.
    Take care my friend!!😀😀❤

      And a wonderful last-day-before-December good morning to you Al!
      Yeah - I use that bracket for other implements as well so had considered grinding it but then looked at other ways around it. I've got a specialty bolt store in the area, so finding bolts that have a thinner head should not be too big a challenge. While I'm sure it will be fine, I don't like to butcher a nut as badly as I had to this one.

      Hahahaha! I've had some big learnings recently along the theme of 'assume nothing'. There have been some real surprises with new equipment components that have left me shaking my head.
      Spoiler alert. Upcoming video about one more little surprise/design flaw.

    could have moved the hook up. there's a reason the plow has two holes for the upper link.

      Huge thanks for tuning in and commenting. I think you've just inspired me to do a "Part 2" video on this.
      Your suggestion is right on the money - - - and at the time that I was making that video, I was halfway done doing exactly what you suggest, but paused and went to look at some of my other attachments. That caused me to do some grinding. Subsequently, when the 4066 was in the shop for some warranty work I took it in with that blade attached, and the dealer had no further suggestions after I explained the issue and my solution.
      To explain further, here's my situation.
      1) I've intentionally standardized around the Compact Series (1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 models) of John Deere tractors - both in terms of the tractor unit and the attachments and currently own a 1025 and a 4066. I intentionally sold a 5000 series simply because it was not a ready fit with most of my attachments.
      2) I have five key John Deere purchased attachments for the rear of the 4066 - all of which have been purchased and branded either John Deere or Frontier and designated as being compact tractor series specific attachments.
      They are: #1 landplane, #2 root rake, #3 9' blade and #4 - a ballast box. Also, #5 a 4000 series aerator/seeder.
      Interestingly the ballast box - which is what most frequently attached to the tractor has no other top pin attachment point on that ballast box. Meaning - if I'd moved the hook as I first intended and as you suggested for the blade, there is simply no way to quick attach my ballast box - or the aerator/seeder.
      And I forget which of the other implements I mentioned has a lower attachment point than the one I'm using as the only alternative.
      Confused and perplexed? So am I.
      Meaning, the entire point of the quick attach for multiple John Deere/Frontier implements seems to get lost quickly . . .

    • @dirtbeard108
      @dirtbeard108 Рік тому +2

      @@howardkettner I understand. I have to share implements between a 1025r and a Kubota. I use pins for the imatch hook instead of bolts for quick changes.

    Are you sure that lowering the top link bolts down a hole wouldn't have accomplished the same thing as grinding the bolts? That's what it looked like in the picture.

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  2 роки тому

      You landed in the same place as I did in terms of Option 1. The challenge however is that while the side mounts have multiple positions, the actual hook/shank on the iMatch where the blade needs to 'seat' only has two holes in it. Meaning - once I move the bolt out of the place it currently resides - I have no place else to secure it without drilling the 1" thick hook/shank.
      Meaning - my only alternative would be to raise or lower the hook/shank - which means that the iMatch would then truly not match up with the attachment points.
      My solution will be to go to a fastener specialty supplier and get bolts with heads and accompanying nuts that are 1/8" less in height.
      Small things matter, and I remain confounded as to how a John Deere branded iMatch and blade are not totally compatible.

      @@howardkettner have you shown this to your john deere dealer? Curious what their response would be.

      @@darrinrussell3526 You can bet your bottom dollar I will. I like and appreciate the folks there a ton and my intent will be simply that another customer does not experience what I did.
      Not their fault that the manufacturer sends them two components that I special ordered in, but which arrive 8 weeks apart, and I pick them up separately assuming they will be plug-n-play.

      I just find that stuff like this is so disappointing. There's a Netflix movie out on the Boeing planes and what was behind the two crashes. Without stealing the punch line, there used to be something like 18 quality control people assigned to each plane being constructed, and the new owners cut that back to something like two, and fired or demoted QC people that brought them bad news.
      I think that Boeing is not alone. How can companies sell good that they clearly have not field tested?
      And Frontier/John Deere are not alone.
      Wife and I just bought most expensive kitchen stove we've ever purchased, and for 6 months we've gone without it working properly. Finally repair guy showed up - and you guessed it. Factory wired it wrong.

      That is certainly my initial reaction - until I discover it let's me do the thing I like second best to operating equipment - that being to dig out my tools and raid my bolt bin and see what I can do to solve the design mystery . . .
      It only gets really annoying when I'm on a tight timeline, or it's something that inconveniences/frustrates Coral. I always appreciate her operating equipment and getting stuff done, and I want her to consistently have a good experience doing that.

    I ran into the same issue with 2 or 3 non-John Deere units called a "Quick Hitch" from different manufacturers. The problem was caused by the upper hook on some models being too close to the hook mounting bolts. I also found out that implements need to be "Quick Hitch compatible in order to work. Below is a link to the video I did on Quick Hitches. Maybe it will help
