  • One of the most annoying tasks on your tractor typically involves attaching or detaching implements with your 3 point hitch. Believe it or not, your three point hitch is more complicated than you might believe. I found that to be true myself when researching for this video. There's a lot of tips and tricks that might make it easier for you to connect attachments to both your three point hitch and to your PTO. If you'd like to see how to connect an attachment to a three point hitch, then you'll get to see that as well.
Not every three point hitch is created the same, different sway arms and turn buckles, even some that have a feature called Hitch Assist, and of course, everyone's favorite, hydraulic top and tilt! So, thanks for taking the time to check out my video, I hope you find it helpful. If you like what you see, please consider subscribing, giving it a thumbs up, leave a comment, and check out the other videos on my channel! Hope you have a great day!

Hey! I really enjoy your videos and i finally subscribed! Keep them coming! About me. I am a suburban guy who bought lake property in Oklahoma where nothing is level. I bought my first and only tractor last year. A 2019 John Deere 3032. I added the hydraulics for the grapple, that I also purchased along with the loader and box blade. The grapple is fantastic! I also bought a quick hitch and a quik Knect hitch for the PTO. I am a pretty handy guy and can make most stuff work, but the day I got the quik Knect hooked up was amazing. I spent a few months until my quik Knect came in wresting with the stupid PTO on the brush hog and got to the point where I wasn't going to use my brush hog because it was such a pain. This could be a topic for a future video. I also installed my own grill guard to protect the front radiator etc, by welding a piece of expanded metal to the front frame and painting it John Deere green it looks like it came from the factory, even thought I am not a great welder. Paint covers up a lot. Thanks again

Ha! "Park your implements on a level ground." I backed into the machine shed at Grandpa's place last week to hook up to his bush hog. He parked it on the level, dirt floor of the machine shed, but sometime in the previous century a tree had grown in the bit of soil the shed now covered, a large tree and Grandpa had parked the bush hog on top of it, dropping the drawbar onto the old stump. With the shackle sitting on the stump the rest of the bar had about four inches of clearance from the dirt floor. A couple of floor jacks and various bits of cement blocks and I got it high enough to attach and pull out. You guys and your new fangled ideas.

You suggested working with the 3pt implements on a level surface and with a pallet under the implement. I would additionally suggest adding a set of 1000#, 4 wheel moving dollies under the pallet to make moving the pallet easier on a concrete barn floor, or just screwing some wheels on to the bottom of the pallet. The dollies are usually around $20, so it just seems easier. SO much easier to position the implement in place.

That thing at 14:55 is a real work saver. I can't count the amount of times I've had to bump my tractor a little bit back, a little bit forward, a little bit back again, raise the hitch, lower the hitch,..... just to hitch up an implement. It would be especially useful for a guy like me that has a really touchy back. I can't tell you the number of times that I've thrown out my back for a few weeks, just mounting my back blade for winter.

On my 4310 I bought another adjustable lift arm for the left side, the arms are identical, it serves multiple purposes not just helping hook ups . I can angle any attachment up or down on either side for lets say my grader blade because I can't go up steep hills pulling a lot of gravel. One of the best things I ever bought. At the time it was about $100 . May be more now.

Another interesting video Courtney! When I was looking to trade for a new 4052R, the dealer had a new one on hand that was all decked out with a lot of extras on it along with the “Top and Tilt” option, with an offer I couldn’t refuse😉. How handy it is! It’s one of those...”I wouldn’t have ordered it, but now that I have it, I don’t want to be without it.” Not only for hooking up implements with quick hitch, which is a breeze, but for blade or box blade work, 3pt. forks, carryall, and I use the top link in float position for bush hog mowing (allows easier turning and uneven terrain). In addition, the two hydraulic remotes allows for using remotes for other implements as well. I use them with a stump grinder that requires 2 remotes.

I spend AT LEAST 15 minutes hooking up my brush hog to the PTO every time on by Kubota BX2680. Yesterday, I threw up my hands and was going to buy a $400 PTO quick-connect. Tractor Mike showed a neat trick where you painting the splines on the outside of the coupler on the brush hog side and you showed me that I can put the PTO at mid-machine and turn the tractor spline shaft AND I don't have to hold down the button until I'm ready to fully seat everything. I put the two ideas together, rotated everything into position and just hooked it up in under 10 seconds. Taking it off was just as easy! No more trying to find the button and my hand being in a VERY akward posiion. BOO-YAH!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! (I guess I should actually read the manual now, huh?)
PS- DO you have caps for sale? I'd like to buy one to support you.

It can also help to rotate the pins which let each side 'float' a little so you can move each arm a little independently to get the lower links attached. Then you can just pick it up a little, reset the pins and Bob's your uncle.

Wish I had this when I got my first tractor, a new JD1025R, last year. 3-point attachment is something that most tractor owners take for granted but for a first time tractor owner, even with the owner's manual, it can seem daunting. Next time though, maybe talk more about uneven surface hook-ups... It's ironic that, when we start out, our storage yard is usually at the worst state of practicality since we know f-all of how to operate our machines. Your garage set-up is inspiring but I prefer your few "in the field" videos. Thanks for the presentation.

Finer note on the top link. The whole idea of the patent for the 3PH is that the implement when pulled through the ground (visualize a plow) wants to rotate up out around the lift arm pins. The upper link stops this and pushes into the tractor. We all think of the top link as lifting the back end of the implement but when engaging the ground it is the opposite. It is above the axle so it pushes into the tractor. The higher you raise it the more it pushes in. Prior to the 3PH it was common for tractors to wheelie and flip over backwards killing the operator if they didn't get the clutch in fast enough. Ferguson (massy Ferguson ford Ferguson etc. ) figured this out and his patent means the modern 3PH prevents this. Higher up for heavy DRAFT ie. Hard to pull not Heavy physically which you want a lower point for.

Don’t have a quick hitch but keep a length of 1” pvc pipe handy to spread the lower attach while backing. Each implement has its own length of pipe.
I use a heavy. chain on the top link for my flail mower, tiller, grader, planter and well everything. The chain will lift the implement as needed and float it over uneven ground. Use of a split link makes easy to adjust the length of chain although by now, each implement has the desired length already attached to the top link.
On the sliding pto attach, I pull back the collar and then wrap a zip tie around the shaft to keep the collar back while I slide the shaft forward onto the splined drive.

Hello I have a question on the three point lift on the tractor, the part that is part of the tractor that the side links connect to (sorry not sure what they are called, i will call them the three point lift points). Should the right and left three point lift points be level from the factory? i just got a new 1025R and the right side looks lower then the left side. this can probably be compensated by adjusting the right side link, but should this be the case, or should the tractor lift points be level from the factory? Really enjoy your channel, and thought you would be the person to ask. would appreciate any comments you have. thank you,

Top link...you mentioned the pitch...so when the top link is longer the arena drag sits more even?? I would like to have the roller in the back have more pressure on the ground to compact the arena footing

Not sure, maybe try and see if putting the tractor in neutral (parking brake set) works?

  • @thoubias

I guess it is not as important with these smaller tractors, but with heavier tractors and implements, when attaching and detaching the PTO shaft, all the 3 points of the linkage should be attached, and it should be made sure that the tractor implement will not be able to move, when you are attaching and detaching the PTO shaft. You do not want to get crushed in there!

Yep, top & tilt is expensive, and not 100% necessary. But if you want to make something like a box blade an absolute pleasure to use properly, there is no substitute! And if you "amortize" the TNT's cost over the 15+ years you'll have your tractor, their not that bad. Finally, If you really want your TNT to perform at its best, be sure it has "dual piloted check valves" on both cylinders. These absolutely lock the cylinder in place once you've set it where you need it until you override that setting with your SCV controls.

I'm not 100% on this, but as I recall that 3PH rate of drop setting is dependent on the weight of whatever is on the 3PH. Set it at that 2 second drop rate empty, hook onto 500 lbs of weight, and the 3PH will drop like a rock in free fall. 😉

I agree. ie. I make mine drop quickly when using a box blade to reduce humps when the rear tires go over something; not as fast running a brush cutter. The 3 bottom plough makes it drop like a rock.

You CAN do real work with a Quick Hitch! I use mine as a logging arch. No huge trees but if my hitch can hold up the 700# flail mower, it can lift one end of a log to drag it out where I can cut to length for carrying with the forks on the loader.

  • @garyreinke5161

The problem that I have had is the quick hitch bottom hooks are fixed in width and do not easily accommodate all implements. “Pat’s Quick Hitch” attachments in my opinion are better and more adjustable

The tractor’s 3pt hitch arms actually GO INSIDE and are surrounded by the black steel framing of the quick hitch on either side. In the video, it does look like he attached the right side 3pt arm to the inside of the tractor arm, but again, if you’ll look closer, the tractor’s 3pt arms are sandwiched between the gap in the quick hitch so the pin actually passes through 2 holes on the quick hitch and the tractor arm for a total of 3 round opening per side. I hope this helps both of you understand the illusion of the quick hitch seemingly being attached per your comment and helps the gentleman who created the video understand why you asked that question in the first place. Thanks!

I don't know about you but I don't want to have to start and stop my tractor 4 times just to attach an implement. Today I attached my chipper without even turning the tractor off. As long as there's no one near the controls, nothing is really gonna happen. You have the tractor in neutral, park brake off so you can move the tractor slightly (if you have a small one), PTO on mid setting so rear PTO is free to spin, rear link arms at the lowest setting so I can move them. AND I don't even have a quick hitch.

Great video, and so beneficial to the tractor community! Makes me glad I just ordered 2 implements (Brush Crusher 4215 and Pallet Forks) from Good Works Tractors! (And BTW, to interested readers, Courtney beat the price for the Brush Crusher, and CRUSHED the cost for shipping [pun intended], vs my "local" dealer. Try him out -- you'll no doubt be glad you did. Oh, and GWT is right at 1000 miles away from me!)
    So anyway...
    1) Love the fly's part in the video, but did it remind anybody else of the final scene with Norman Bates in the holding cell in the original Psycho (ua-cam.com/video/dYDxxHrlmUg/v-deo.html)? Just sayin'.
    2) Is there a trick like the mid/rear PTO switch for tractors with no mid-PTO (e.g., 3038e)? I spent the better part of 15' yesterday trying to hook up the PTO on my stump grinder, and finally gave it up for another day. VERY frustrating!
    3) I know what you MEANT about the quick hitch, but since I have one (not yours, but very similar), I feel compelled to mention that they are not that foolproof for older and/or non-QH compatible implements. That's still a frustration, even with a QH (unless you know something I don't!).
Again, thanks for your service to the tractor-owners community!

    • @GoodWorksTractors
      @GoodWorksTractors  4 роки тому +2

Haha, thanks for watching Tim, good stuff in your comments. I'm not aware of that PTO trick on machines with only rear PTO. Perhaps try putting the transmission in neutral with the parking brake set? The other thing I do in that situation is to get the 3 point connected and raise the implement just slightly off the ground. Enough so that you can freely spin the shaft of the attachment and get those splines to line up.
Yes, quick hitches are designed to work with quick hitch implements. I wouldn't say the quick hitches are fool proof, just not designed to work with non-quick hitch compatible attachments.
      Have a good one Tim!
