I immediately preordered the S1, as I've wanted one for many years. Believe it or not, this will be the most affordable S1 model on the market, the small number of models currently available are from boutique manufacturers released years or even decades ago for well over $1,000.
Sam, I really hope you get the Broadway limited S1. I see they have it shown there in the pennsylvania railroad 1939 Worlds fair paint scheme. This was another Raymond lowey design and a rigid frame, not articulated.
@@SamsTrainsIf it works as BLI thinks it will it'll have a minimum radius of 18" (which I believe is 2nd radius), so it might work. The one issue I can think of right now is the s curve on Gordon's hill
The S1 is easily in my top 5 steam locos of all time. A true design icon, despite of how unpractical it was as a locomotive. I always wanted to have her in model form but sadly all of the models that were ever made of her are rare and very expensive
Great video Sam , Those Accurascale Class 60s look great ; The Class 60 in the EWS livery looks really good , The Rapido S160 in the USA Grey looks great , and please do a review on those Dapol Tank Cars
Sam, I recently got a gray Oxford N7 with factory fitted DCC sound for £110, two of the self tapping screws on the base keeper plate keep slipping out so I replaced them with spare screws from a broken Bachmann Edward. The N7 is fine now, shame about the quality issue with the screws, other than that it's a good value model.
5:23 I agree, even though I have pre-ordered a couple, the price is very steep. That said, I think the price is more inline with American or European outline models in HO, which nearly always cost significantly more, even before import charges. Part of reason for this I suspect is the different design philosophies of UK vs American/European locomotives: namely that UK locomotive engineers tended to go to great lengths to hide a lot of stuff, especially pipework, whereas American/European engineers prioritised ease of maintenance. In model form this means a lot of separately fitted details for the American/European models, thus an increase in cost. A prime examples of this is one of my favourite European prototypes, the Prussian G8.1, compare that with a similar UK prototype like the LNWR A Class (really would like an RTR model of this class) or the LNWR G2A Class, the shear level of detail required for the G8.1 is astounding.
Great video Sam, one thing I would say is that Rapido has done detachable tenders before, on their Lion models. If mine is anything to go by then their design is very good and reliable, so looking forward to the S160!
Excellent as always. You might have to do a whole new channel for American equipment 😊 I am curious if you know of a good youtube channel like yours for the larger scales of S, O, or my favorite 1 guage or G/ F? I find your style, honesty, and integrity to be very refreshing and I hope I can find more channels the are similar to yours in quality and form.
I'm definitely going to be picking up one of those PRR S1's. Its probably my favorite locomotive ever, even if the real thing had some serious drawbacks.
The Hornby TT120 Coronation loco looks amazing - at first glance the detail looked like that expected on a larger scale model. Possibly putting 2 and 2 together to make 5 but there is a rumour about a forthcoming Bachmann announcement on TT120....
Not convinced that the Bachmann Rebecca will be worth the price given the prices of the existing Thomas range, but they could prove me wrong! As far as Rapido go with the tender connection, the solution on the Stirling Single was a multi-pin plug and socket with clips either side. Actually very easy to do and super reliable, so perhaps they have refined that a bit.
Would love to see you cover more Broadway Limited locomotives in general. The regular "Paragon4" models aren't brass and much more affordable. However, Athearn Genesis and ScaleTrains also make really good American models that you may want to check out 🙂
If you get an Accurascale 60, may I suggest doing a comparison video with the older Hornby model? As for the Pennsy S1, as much as I like that locomotive, she would probably be too large and impractical for my layout. I think I'll stick with the S1 in Train Simulator.
A great summary of the railway news recently. I'm surprised you didn't mention Cavalex, as their 60s are also expected in early 2025 (one year on from their 56s). I'm not a fan of american stuff (as in, I'm generally only interested in British train stuff, not that I dislike foreign stuff), but the Broadway S1 looks fantastic, and I'd love to see a review of it when it comes out. Just had emails from Accurascale this morning to say the Andrew Barclays and the P class' have entered production, with a revised estimated shipping of Q3 2024. Meaning for once, the due date is earlier than previously expected, as when they took on the project, their due date moved from April/May 2024 to Q4 2024. I received my TT:120 class 50 from Rails on the day you dropped your review, and it looks fantastic, sounds great, but I haven't tested it running yet. I had to order the blue and grey mk2Fs separately, from Gaugemaster, as Rails had none in stock; they look fantastic, pretty similar to the mk3s in terms of specs, and they do have moulded interiors with correct seating (2+2 for standard, 2+1 for first class) despite having tinted windows. Interestingly, they also came with magnetic buckeye couplings as an alternative, which would've been great to go with the mk3s, but unlike the 00 ones and the Hunt Elites, they're directional (like Brio), so you have to get them the right way round when coupling them. So they're fine for fixed rakes, but not necessarily for rakes that get mixed around, or even coupling locos to the stock.
Class 60 : Accurascale strikes hard ! Including the pricing ! Rapido : I'm in for their S160, I would be able to compare her with the Roco model I have (in Italian livery). There is a BR4 model that I can use, my pick. I just need to update my shopping list by now... A little bit high priced, but I hope the quality will be here. Review planned for her Sam ? I have their fireless locomotive on my shopping list, that would give me a preview of what they can do with the S160. Not a fan of the Thomas franchise, but a review of Rebecca would still be interesting for me. Your choice Sam. TT still revving up, good for this scale. OO9 and N not forgotten, good... I'm in for the Dapol 14 tons, I'll buy some of them next month. My EFE Bloaters are on the run from TMC, expected next week. So, Hornby had finally paid someone to write their blog. It's a tredn here, the first examples they pull out of the assembly line are riddled with faults, but the next ones on the production line are good... Anyway, wow on the Coronation class coaches. If they don't botch the manufacturing, that would be a superb model in the "must have" category. The Pennsy Duplex is a real beast, if you can have your hands on one, that would be great !
Thanks Oliver - yeah incredible stuff isn't it? That would be very interesting - how is the Roco model? Yes all being well I will get one to review! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It's claimed the S1 Duplex reached 152mph, a lot faster than Mallards 126. However it was against the law in the US to run trains this fast so it never set a record. Pennsylvania Railroad got fined as it was for going too fast.
Ah the S1, to my knowledge takes the prize as the longest non-articulated steam locomotive ever at 140' 2", the only one to beat it was some steam turbine thingi. The fact that the model will be able to take 18" radius curves is truly remarkable.
I’m actually working on an HO scale model of the s160 2-8-0. It uses a modified IHC 2-8-0 chassis and several 3d printed body parts, including the tender chassis. I have already acquired the chassis, cut the lead weights, designed the models for the 3d printed parts, and replaced the original idler drive axles with driven ones. I still have to get the motor and the 3d printer itself in order to make the shells and tender chassis.
The Acura Scale detail behind the grill is innovative plus new and anything new is exciting. I am also happy to hear you are contemplating doing some American releases and reviewing locomotives plus rolling stock. I am very interested in this obviously being from the states. Regardless I enjoy your model railway news segments and look forward to the next installment. Talk about new and exciting, I think the Hornby coaches, if they come to fruition as presented, have stepped up the game for all other manufacturers with the interior and hot foil applications. These coaches may be my first ever Hornby purchase and I'll worry about the flanges hitting the sleepers later if the problem exists on my HO track. Great presentation, Jersey Bill
More recent higher quality OO scale models have moved to RP25-110 wheel profiles as in the specifications of the Accurascale 60 class diesel. Unfortunately Sam does not appreciate the significance of using this really great wheel standard but focusses on detail parts etc and also using a caliper to measure back to backs rather than using the much more instructive NMRA standards gauge. Mostly OO scale have been using RP25-110 for the past ten or twenty years for newer high quality products so no problem even running on code 75 track.
That problem of the wheels on the sleepers has taught me to never buy any used equipment unless I KNOW it's of late manufacture. I have several Lima wagons that sit on a siding because the wheels are to "flangeful" and the Frames are too stiff to pry the wheels out for replacement. While Sam still uses the back-to-back measurement, I check any new gear for the NMRA flange standard, and nearly always have to adjust any Hornby gear, otherwise they ride up on Peco bullhead points and crossings.
Broadway say 18" radius curves. I think 2 of the driving wheels are flangeless, but you can replace them with flanged wheels that come as extras with the loco. In saying that I think the one I ordered will spend most of its time on the display shelf.
The Duplex looks impressive, Sam. As good as the modern stuff is though, would love to see you do an episode about the old school Hornby Dublo 3 rail stuff ^.^
Sam. I’m a beginner in N Scale. Your information and broad coverage on OO is tremendous and I see you are branching into TT. Any chance of extending to N?
Hi Sam, we're being spoilt for choice! Some great models on the way and I'm glad I don't want any of the American outine models given their price. I can't afford a rake of the Dapol toplights but I've preordered a 57xx & 14xx and looking forward to my 44xx from Accurascale, Dapol & Rapido. Is it me or are Dapol lifting their prices? Cheers Sam.
The Pennsylvania S1 duplex was much too large. For example it was too long to operate in and out of PRR’s Pittsburgh station. The curves there are sharp, but PRR knew that really long wheelbase locomotives would have to operate on lines west of Crestline Ohio, which was largely straight with gentler curves all the way to Chicago.
Interesting about Bachmann's Rebecca, that is an original west country loco. Does that mean that eventually Bachmann may start using the same tooling to cash in on Hornby's cash cow. Hopefully they will, it is about time.
Just one thing of note, Rapido HAS done the detachable loco-tender connection before, at least once to my knowledge, and that was the Stirling Single. So it's good to see it back.
Have there been any updates about where Rails of Sheffield is with the final batch of Hattons coaches? I'm worried about them still not having come through yet
bachmann have also released beau, from thomas and friend and will be a limited run for now, so I'd reccoment puckung one up for review as I'd like to see how it is of a locomotive
Anyone else notice that the Rapido S160s have different builder’s plates? I noticed that one had the Lima diamond plate and another had the Baldwin circle plate.
The ongoing output from Accurascale really has me tempted to start in OO once I get my n gauge layout further along the line. A class 60 wouldn’t be overkill for a shunting puzzle right? 😊
Hi Sam, Rails of Sheffield Genesis release! Any word? Because the last update I got from Rails is "alll orders will be transferred in due course". That was months ago.

Hey Sam. Bachmann Thomas have also released pictures of their new Beau loco, the American wild west loco from a movie i think? Looks awesome. Maybe you could feature that in the next news round up
Those 2-8-0's have oddly different builders plates than "Alco"...comparing to my Bachmann GS-4, and photo's of preserved engines in my area...that builders plate on the prototype photo looks an awful lot like the builders plate for Lima(Lime-ah) Locomotive Works, out of, you guessed it, Lima, Ohio. Might have been an Alco/Lima build just to streamline it, but still, that builders plate looks very off for an Alco plate (which is circular depending on how back you go, or a rounded rectangle) Rapido best make that change. And due to it being an American kreigslok (war locomotive), It's peeked my interest, just needs down scaled to N-scale...and yeah...looking at the photos...someone wanna get a hold of Rapido, 'cuz those are definitely Lima plates, not Alco. Bro, at time stamp 5:40, it even says "Lima"...
Fun fact about the Pennsylvania S1. Its supposedly the fastest locomotive in the world. Back in the Day it got a actually speeding ticket, yes really. From the ICC, for doing 156mph AVERAGE between two stations. It was making the run Between Fort Wayne Indiana and Chicago Illinois, On a section of track that was known as "The Race Track" by Pennsylvania crews. And covered the 160+ mile run, IN A HOUR, and that includes acceleration and deceleration for the station stops at Fort Wayne and Chicago. and it averaged out on the low end at 156mph, and that is what the Pennsylvania Railroad got fined for, infact the fine STILL exists, and is in the Altoona archives. and Available to view if you wish to visit the archives in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
S1 and T1 both have dozens accounts of crushing the speed record, I'm so excited for 5550 to be finished. Both to see that gorgeous Art Deco design, and see it officially claim it's title.

The new Rapido USATC s160 also has an exclusive model from Ellis Clark railworks and not just Rails of Sheffield
As costly has it is (nearly £500), I have pre-ordered two S160s from Rails of Sheffield (5197 & 701 “Franklin D. Roosevelt”)
11:11 Sam to the rescue.
Good work fella!
Sam, I really hope you get the Broadway limited S1. I see they have it shown there in the pennsylvania railroad 1939 Worlds fair paint scheme. This was another Raymond lowey design and a rigid frame, not articulated.
I don't know about getting one - reckon it'd struggle on my track though I could be wrong!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome! I'm sure this will also be very expensive, but readily available at least!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Please follow the S1 duplex - looks huge.
It really does!
Great video Sam , Those Accurascale Class 60s look great ; The Class 60 in the EWS livery looks really good , The Rapido S160 in the USA Grey looks great , and please do a review on those Dapol Tank Cars
Yes, follow the Broadway Limited 😊
Sam, I recently got a gray Oxford N7 with factory fitted DCC sound for £110, two of the self tapping screws on the base keeper plate keep slipping out so I replaced them with spare screws from a broken Bachmann Edward. The N7 is fine now, shame about the quality issue with the screws, other than that it's a good value model.
Blimey that's a good price indeed! Ahh that's super annoying - wonder what the deal with that is?!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes, more BLI would be great! Scaletrains, too!!
The streamliner looks ace, well worth following up please!
The s1 duplex looks absolutely phenomenal BLI should be goddamn proud of themselves 👍 (I’m just passionate about how well they do model trains)
Yeah for sure! Pretty sure those are just renders, but hopefully the real model will look that good!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains of course Sam
The Train hobby will live aslong as we live. it will always be a wanted & loved hobby!
Great video Sam, one thing I would say is that Rapido has done detachable tenders before, on their Lion models. If mine is anything to go by then their design is very good and reliable, so looking forward to the S160!
Ahh you're absolutely right - how could I forget! I also forgot they'd done it with their Stirling too... ops!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Excellent as always. You might have to do a whole new channel for American equipment 😊
I am curious if you know of a good youtube channel like yours for the larger scales of S, O, or my favorite 1 guage or G/ F? I find your style, honesty, and integrity to be very refreshing and I hope I can find more channels the are similar to yours in quality and form.
Do you know about Erics Trains? He reviews 0 gauge in the USA.
Hi, Sam Thanks for the updates, mind blowing 😅, All the best Brian 😃
Not convinced that the Bachmann Rebecca will be worth the price given the prices of the existing Thomas range, but they could prove me wrong!
As far as Rapido go with the tender connection, the solution on the Stirling Single was a multi-pin plug and socket with clips either side. Actually very easy to do and super reliable, so perhaps they have refined that a bit.
Would love to see you cover more Broadway Limited locomotives in general. The regular "Paragon4" models aren't brass and much more affordable. However, Athearn Genesis and ScaleTrains also make really good American models that you may want to check out 🙂
Now Sam that did look good, another one to try . . . Thanks Team.
If you get an Accurascale 60, may I suggest doing a comparison video with the older Hornby model?
As for the Pennsy S1, as much as I like that locomotive, she would probably be too large and impractical for my layout. I think I'll stick with the S1 in Train Simulator.
Good for Accurascale for that price of the Class 60! Other manufacturers please take note.
I use hydro dipping for rc cars and models try it Sam it’s fun to do
I've seen one or two videos of the technique being used on guitars.
Started watching this video with no pre-orders but finished watching the accurascale section and now have a class 60 on pre-order XD :)
Ah the S1, to my knowledge takes the prize as the longest non-articulated steam locomotive ever at 140' 2", the only one to beat it was some steam turbine thingi. The fact that the model will be able to take 18" radius curves is truly remarkable.
It'll probably have some sort of articulated chassis under it. The originals were notoriously "stiff", even on prototypical curves.
Yeah really like that feature - I do enjoy the American models too, so looking forward to doing more! Thanks a lot for sharing,
Sam :)
First American locomotive that l've liked the look of, but surely you would need a large layout for that to go around bends lol.
Broadway say 18" radius curves. I think 2 of the driving wheels are flangeless, but you can replace them with flanged wheels that come as extras with the loco. In saying that I think the one I ordered will spend most of its time on the display shelf.
@goarmysleepinthemud It will be interesting to see if they send Sam one to review :)
The Duplex looks impressive, Sam. As good as the modern stuff is though, would love to see you do an episode about the old school Hornby Dublo 3 rail stuff ^.^
The tank wagons seams to have a cast tank and separate chains to add on the hooks. The box is small.
Sam. I’m a beginner in N Scale. Your information and broad coverage on OO is tremendous and I see you are branching into TT. Any chance of extending to N?
Please keep a close eye on the S1 project from BLI
Hi Sam, we're being spoilt for choice! Some great models on the way and I'm glad I don't want any of the American outine models given their price. I can't afford a rake of the Dapol toplights but I've preordered a 57xx & 14xx and looking forward to my 44xx from Accurascale, Dapol & Rapido. Is it me or are Dapol lifting their prices? Cheers Sam.
The Pennsylvania S1 duplex was much too large. For example it was too long to operate in and out of PRR’s Pittsburgh station. The curves there are sharp, but PRR knew that really long wheelbase locomotives would have to operate on lines west of Crestline Ohio, which was largely straight with gentler curves all the way to Chicago.
haha fascinating - it sounds deeply impractical!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Impractical sums the S1 to a T!
Interesting about Bachmann's Rebecca, that is an original west country loco. Does that mean that eventually Bachmann may start using the same tooling to cash in on Hornby's cash cow. Hopefully they will, it is about time.
Sounds like an interesting idea.
Another fine production!!!! Please review all the suggested products tell Chole hello
Sam, you hit me hard with the surprise backhand that we're already halfway through this year.
Ow.
Yes, please follow the S-1.
What about Calax model class 60 did they not announced their model before Accouscale announced, who pitched who??
Just proves that curasale are the same as the rest. They relentlessly and needlessly smash their competition.
That's a good question - I'm not sure about that one!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Anyone else notice that the Rapido S160s have different builder’s plates? I noticed that one had the Lima diamond plate and another had the Baldwin circle plate.
I hope Sam does a review of the “fireless” locomotives. I’d like to see these in HO-scale, and with Kadee knuckle couplers. 😊
That Accurascale class 60 looks fantastic, I've got to grab a couple of them, although Cavalex have a very similar looking model coming out too that looks very nice, I might get one of each
Yeah! Will be interesting to see how the Cavalex one comes along - will have to start covering their stuff!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrainsif it's anything like the wonderful class 56 they recently released it should be well worth getting. And yes, it would be interesting to see your opinion on their models
Hi Sam I would love you to review the Broadway Limited duplex I have quite a few BLI models and this looks like one I would happily add to my collection. Cheers Steve
Hey Sam thanks for the heads up on what's going on! Just thought I'd let you know Sonic Models are releasing a Large Prairie loco in N gauge very soon. I've pre ordered mine from Rails of Sheffield. Love to see a review of that loco! Regards Terry.
Excellent video Sam. We just need the other scales being covered as well and this would be even better. Now you review N and OO9, it would be great to see them in the news.
Why do you never mention Cavalex models?
Good video overall here Sam, only one locomotive addition for me this month that being the new Black 5 from hornby, went with the BR late crest named version The Glasgow Highlander and it’s excellent, main thing i have been focusing on is sound decoders for me, currently 7 of my locomotive have been fitted with sound with decoders ranging from hornbys HM7000TXS ones to ESU ones.
Ahh sounds great - have you got that one now then? Did it run okay??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam you forgot one of the Rapido S160 Variants
Aka WD No 2044
Wich is a clark railworks exclusive
This S1 is getting me very excited
Then have a cup of tea and a lie down...
im following the s1 project religiously. its my favourite american design.
Awesome!! I think it'll be awesome :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wouldn't that mean it was a hell of a lot quicker than the Mallard? why does the S1 not hold the record
@@liamastill6733 Because every time its brought up people claim that the Dynamometer car Mallard pulled, That was 20+ years old and rarely calibrated is more reliable than the most accurate form of time keeping in the world at the time.
@@liamastill6733 Because it wasn't done in a proper speed trial. (Downhill, and ruining the engine.)
You've already cut and pasted that same diatribe on every video and public forum you can find.
I'll do a cut and paste as well: " However, no records exist to lend credence to the story."
Sam please follow the S1 project. I know you may never get to review it but it is such an important loco in history and I want to see justice done to it. Thanks for everything!
Unfortunately the class 60 is not my era, but I bow before Accurascale, this is what I call a reasonable price for a super detailed loco, well done to them…
Personally not interested in the US material, but once in a while for the US fans why not.
Perhaps you forgot to mention the new tea wagons from Depol, if not already done, saw them today pass by in a mailing from Rails…
Anyway interesting update as ever👍
