That "if miles had continued to be influenced by his uncle, he would've been the next prowler" is some top tier hindsight considering Across the Spiderverse
i was totally gonna comment on this...i wonder if it was a lil hint for what they were gonna do in the future. I mean its multiverse movies, you knew they had to make a different version Miles.
I just noticed a little detail: Aaron says, as Prowler, said "I don't ever quit." But the Spider-People all say "You always get back up." The two phrases have nearly the same meaning, but are so vastly different in intent and delivery. It's a great way to contrast Prowler as a foil to Spider-Man.
omg yeah, cause it shows that miles CAN fail and be able to recover from that while learning from his mistakes whereas the prowler refuses to fail in the first place, thus not learning
Also Miles' mother states that their family motto is "we don't give up" showing that, even as a villain, Aaron still holds himself to his family standards.
The music is so good, the theme its self shows how surprised Miles is to know that his uncle is the prowler, the violin shows his sadness and how heartbroken he is, and the drums show the intensity of the situation. And when the plot twist is revealed, nothing happens until we see Miles’ face. Its basically telling us that the plot twist isn’t for the viewers, but its for Miles.
@@Eden-mn6rt If what you said was true, why didn't Peter had the same colours? Miles spider sense was slow to show his lack of experience and the colours was to show how he was influenced.

It’s crazy that you pointed out the color scheme changing. The fact that if he didn’t meet Peter and was further influenced by his uncle he would have become the prowler. Literally happened in the alternate universe in the new movie. Blowing my mind
It's entirely possible that had Kingpin's collider fuckery not taken Earth-42's genetically modified spider, that Miles-42 would have become Spider-Man. Of course, it's likely it would have been another version of Peter Parker as well
@@khora3845 Miles-42 WAS going to become Spiderman. You can see it in the beginning of Across the Spiderverse, when Spot is talking about his origins and how he took the Spider. In the black and white animation, you can see the spider about to bite Miles-42, you can tell from his iconic braids
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who found the Prowler's "siren" so impactful. It was like a T-Rex roar from Jurassic Park. It was distinctive, and changed the tone of the entire scene. When you heard it in the background, you knew it was time to run. Such a simple thing that was so masterfully utilized. The analysis of the costume color and the shift to spider-man's scheme at the beginning of the movie was a detail I completely missed and makes that scene so much better than it already was. Fantastic essay and critique.
The violin riff(?) that plays after Miles finds out who he is too... that shit hits me right in the heart every time. I've never felt worse for a fictional character, except maybe Elliot Alderson.
Also when Peter B. comes up behind Miles at the cemetery, the visuals get you to think it's the Prowler, you can even start to hear the siren but it turns out to be nothing.
Since the Prowler is a known figure in the comics, a few people already saw the reveal coming. But that didn't make it less impactful, because we saw how much Aaron meant to Miles. And I especially like how he's Miles version of uncle Ben, and that despite being a villain, it's still the tragedy of his death that allowed Miles to become Spider-Man, the hero he was meant to be. I also like how, for a movie that was mostly fun, colorful and energic, everything about the Prowler is played like a horror movie. His appearance, his main theme, the fact that he's almost always seen in the dark... we can feel how much Miles is terrified by this enemy.
Prowler also influenced miles movement. In the what's up danger clip he doesn't swing as much as the other spider people but instead parkours off the cars and buildings only using small swings to keep momentum in the air very similar to prowler
Love this point! My favorite part about reading all the comments on this video is seeing how people continue to find more and more connections that I didn’t even think of!
“It hints that if he was continued to be influenced by his uncle instead of Spider-Man, it’s possible that he would’ve become the next Prowler” The fact that he was actually right about this 3 years ago is insane.
I love basically everything about the Prowler, but I think my single favorite aspect is the fact that there was still a single shred of hope for his character. Even after who-knows-how-many villainous acts, even after vowing to never quit, even knowing it would go against everything he's built up and probably ruin him... Aaron still loved Miles enough to throw all of that away, even if just in that one moment. To let his nephew go in that most critical turning point. It would have been easy for him, as a person, to think he's gone too far to do the "right thing" and just break down. But Aaron doesn't; he knows exactly what he should do- what he WANTS to do- and he does it. It's a choice that costs him his life, but it's never too late to try and do the right thing. To be a better person. I think that's a powerful message.
I think he redeemed himself with this act and he would have lived after knowing miles was spider man, he might have even changed his ways.. i mean he sure as heck wasnt going to go against his own nephew, also i thought he would have wanted or even liked miles following his ways so then maybe they would have made a good crime fighting duo

I feel like it's also worth mentioning that the prowler's motif mimics Miles' motif. Miles has a brassy motif that starts at a note, goes down a note, then come back up. @@SocraticCinema I can't really take the credit for the observation though. A channel called sideways does a great video about the sound of the spiderverse, aptly called "The Sound of the Spider-verse", in which he talks about the use of motifs throughout the movie. @@analytixna6610 well for this movie it's reserved for miles. Also, I mistyped, the miles motif goes up and down while the spider motif goes down then up.
I know that this is a bit of an ADHD moment, but a couple of the shots in Aunt May’s house caused me to notice a detail: Uncle Ben was a military veteran. Look at the triangular case with the American Flag stars visible. That exact thing is given to family after a veteran had passed away
Makes you wonder if Spider-man could be given a similar flag. You gotta think, he fought for the country as well, just in a flashy way where he could be scrutinized by the public far more than most.
@@jjcymbolic Not officially. It would have to be like a technicality of his sacrifices. Same with any other hero. Captain America would, since he is a legit US Military veteran.
Also, I noticed that the first time we see Aaron, he's wearing a light purple shirt and green track pants. I love the subtle hints like that throughout the movie.
5:50 never fails to make me so incredibly impressed at how much emotion the animators were able to convey with LITERALLY JUST EYES. This movie is perfect
On paper, the sentence "The death of Miles' villainous uncle is what inspires him to reach his potential as a hero" makes no sense or sounds like it'd be lazy writing, but it really is beautifully executed in the movie. What I loved is that how deep Aaron was as a sort of tragic villain. Based solely on his interactions with Miles and how he was willing to let Miles go when he realized he was spider man, we get the sense that he's still got a good person in him. It may not justify or absolve him of any wrong doing he's done off-screen, but like you said, we get the sense that he was just like Miles. Made some mistakes and bad choices, never had the chance to turn his life around and became what he is now. Whereas Miles had his "turning point" by meeting spider man. It gives us some depth to what Miles could have been, but it also gives us sympathy for what Aaron never became . It's very sad because it's so real to life that sometimes our experiences and circumstances shape us, rather than our character.
Likewise, I had never noticed that detail. I think it is an earmark of a great movie that a detail like this isn't necessary to enjoy the movie, but makes it that much better when it is recognized. It really was an excellent movie. :-)
Donald Glover played the Prowler in Homecoming. This often gets unnoticed. He even mentions his nephew and how he doesn't want him to get hurt in the interrogation scene.
Black Friday 8 nah, I feel like that was one of the bigger moments in that movie? I feel like anyone who knows the Spider-Man universe caught that; everyone was so hyped bc before Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movie bc there was a petition to get Donald to play Spider-Man lol
Around 5:30, notice in the scene where Miles' uncle has a secondary lighting source cast on his face in the shade of purple, hinting at his true identity in the scene.
I’m watching this after across the spiderverse -- when you said “the prowler is what he would be without direction” YOU GOT THE PLOT OF THE END OF THE MOVIE
It's really impressive how this video's critic was three years ago and now after watching the second movie, you nailed the points that are in the story before it even came out
Coming from a very causal fan of Spider-man, I think my favourite part of the relationship between Miles and Arran is just how emotional it all was. The fear Miles felt was so real. Miles tripped, he stumbled, he hind in fear and froze in terror. Mile's fear established the Prowler as a serious threat, one that scared me more than any other. On the other side of things there's the tragedy of their relationship. They truly had a bond. Arran encouraged Miles and was truly there for him. Miles looked like his whole world came crashing down the moment the Prowler took off his mask. Once the realisation that his nephew was Spider-Man Arran stopped, he looked *horrified* and all he could do was step back and look at Miles. The two of them never got the closure they both needed and wanted. Despite being the villain the Prowler's death was one of the most gutting.
Holy hell, this is such a well done analysis. There are so many things here that I never would have put together, but here you are pointing out that this movie is even more genius than I thought. Good work, I can't wait to see more from your channel!
One thing I love about this film is how they frame the twist that Prowler is Aaron to be a big shock for those that don't know, but still hits hard for those that already know the twist from the comics. When the twist is revealed in the apartment, it allows those in the dark to be surprised, but also focuses specifically on Miles' reaction for the ones who know. So instead of thinking "yeah, I know already," they can still feel the impact of the reveal through Miles and how devastating it is for him
He saw miles as a small boy in a store bought costume, prowler wasn't following orders and revealed himself so he was killed. Sounds way too hardcore but that's how it is.
Perhaps to Kingpin, failure/a disloyal subordinate is a bigger problem than a troublesome kid. He was ready to shoot Doc Ock when it looked like the collider experiment had horribly backfired.
4:15 : "this provides further evidence that if Miles had continued to be influenced by his uncle, he would go on to become the next Prowler" DID YOU JUST---
Quick note: The distorted "siren" sound is actually a sound of an elephant! You can find a video on youtube how much work was put into creating this sound! I really recommend watching it.
This aged really well with across the spiderverse confirming your suspicion that he would have become the prowler without the influence of a spiderman in his universe
After the new movie across the spider verse has came out you were right. The shifting of miles color from purple/green to red and blue he was suppose to be the next prowler
With all of the points provided in this video, it’s surprising how much foreshadowing there was in Into the Spiderverse for miles becoming the Prowler at the end of Across the Spiderverse. You basically called it when you said Miles would have become the Prowler if he continued following down Uncle Aaron‘s path.
I can't decide which is more amazing, Into the Spider-Verse, or this essay. It hit all the points a good video essay should: confident argument, creative editing, soothing coffee-house background jams, and, most importantly, the feeling that there is so much more to learn about what I previously thought was absent from a film. My favorite point, and a certified James DeLisio trademark, is your discussion of motifs. This movie is sonically a masterclass on how to blend the style of filmmaking one uses with the music choices throughout the movie. The Prowler's horn was always something that stuck with me when I watched, and now you made me see why I loved "What's Up Danger?" as much as I do. Great job bro, keep growing and improving, and, like Uncle Aaron said, never quit.
4:20 this point is actually confirmed in sequel across the spiderverse [SPOILER] where we learn that in earth 42 miles never get's bit by spider hence becoming prowler himself.
What's so amazing about these details is that even though we never noticed them, our brains did, and that is what makes the movie so powerful! You don't need to understand it to feel it, it is completely accessable, yet understanding it makes the creation that much more amazing. This is the best super hero movie to date, and it sets a high bar!
4:02 such a foreshadow/prediction of what’s revealed in Across the Spider Verse, amazing. Miles likely becoming the Prowler reminds me of Eon from the Ben 10 series, who is basically a non-omnitrix holding but time warping evil Ben. They also have a purple/green theme but separated.

joshua moore That’s a great observation! Motifs are always my favorite part of a movie, so I love hearing different takes on them!
@@SocraticCinema I can't really take the credit for the observation though. A channel called sideways does a great video about the sound of the spiderverse, aptly called "The Sound of the Spider-verse", in which he talks about the use of motifs throughout the movie. Someone else in the comments of that video was the one that pointed out that the prowler siren was a distorted miles motif.
It's actually not a miles motif. It's the "hero" motif. So take that one in.
@@analytixna6610 well for this movie it's reserved for miles. Also, I mistyped, the miles motif goes up and down while the spider motif goes down then up.
@@joshuamoore4971 so yeah what I'm saying is correct. There's a hero motif that is distorted for prowler and reinvented for miles

4:13 DUDE JUST PREDICTED ACROSS THE SPIDERVERSE 3 YEARS EARLY OH MY GOD
I know that this is a bit of an ADHD moment, but a couple of the shots in Aunt May’s house caused me to notice a detail: Uncle Ben was a military veteran. Look at the triangular case with the American Flag stars visible. That exact thing is given to family after a veteran had passed away
Ginger Kays great detail dude, thanks!
That's actually taken from some versions of the comics, such as Bullet Points. Apparently the main version is a former MP.
Captain America would, since he is a legit US Military veteran.
maybe youre thinking too much about it..
Yes my heart breaks every time
THIS AGED SO WELL WHAT
On paper, the sentence "The death of Miles' villainous uncle is what inspires him to reach his potential as a hero" makes no sense or sounds like it'd be lazy writing, but it really is beautifully executed in the movie.
Truly, this movie on the plot execution level is almost perfect.
4:00 I have seen a huge amount of videos about Spiderverse, yet I never noticed that detail. So awesome!
My mind was blown by this!
This was definitely one of my favorite things that I discovered while researching! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yeah same, I saw it in the movie but didn't pick up the significance until now
Likewise, I had never noticed that detail. I think it is an earmark of a great movie that a detail like this isn't necessary to enjoy the movie, but makes it that much better when it is recognized. It really was an excellent movie. :-)

BRO FULLY PREDICTED MILES WOULD BECOME PROWLER THAT IS WILD
Donald Glover played the Prowler in Homecoming.
This often gets unnoticed. He even mentions his nephew and how he doesn't want him to get hurt in the interrogation scene.
Black Friday 8 nah, I feel like that was one of the bigger moments in that movie? I feel like anyone who knows the Spider-Man universe caught that; everyone was so hyped bc before Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movie bc there was a petition to get Donald to play Spider-Man lol
THe Prowler b4 he was the Prowler..
gamerlise25 That was the prowler they even said his name was Aaron Davis
Gamerlise25 your stupid fake Spider-Man fan
@Gamerlise25 yes he was, Dumass 😂
The fact that they foreshadowed mile’s original destiny with those color motifs is insane and shows how well-thought out this movie was
It even put what Miguel was saying to even MORE perspective! Wow the did a great job with the Spiderman series
bro must have felt so smart watching the new movie
“The Prowler has only been in one movie! He can’t be the best villain in a Spider-Man movie!”
“Prowler song goes BRRRRRRRR!”
Quite literally
hearing "he would become the new prowler if he kept having influence of his uncle" after across the spiderverse is just crazy
4:00 Man predicted a spoiler without effort holyyy
holy shit, 4 minutes in and you basically revealed the ending to ACROSS the spider verse
Ended up in my recommendation...
I’m happy this was there
YOU CALLED IT MILES WAS DESTINED TO BE THE PROWLER
This man right here just predicted across the spider verse wow.
The Prowler was pretty scary and intense whenever he showed up. This movie is amazing.
Around 5:30, notice in the scene where Miles' uncle has a secondary lighting source cast on his face in the shade of purple, hinting at his true identity in the scene.
The prowler had not been introduced at that point, so what would it be hinting toward? I think your comment is a stretch.
@@Zorooooooooooooooooooooooooooo dont you think that would be foreshadowing, then?
@@Zorooooooooooooooooooooooooooo Imagine not knowing what foreshadowing is.
Nah that's just the lighting, but still that's really clever
@@goeeey Yeah, it's the lighting, but it's lighting thats also foreshadowing.
Mentioning that Miles could have been the prowler makes a lot more sense now the second movie has been released. This analysis was ahead of its time
it always made sense. thats why it works in part 2, ,miles story is well written
@@IronheartvsMiles yep! Really well written.
4:14 bro literally predicted across the spider verse
I’m watching this after across the spiderverse -- when you said “the prowler is what he would be without direction”
YOU GOT THE PLOT OF THE END OF THE MOVIE
That is genuinely insane how you called that
Prowler's sound design gave me intense chills when I Was In the theater.
It's really impressive how this video's critic was three years ago and now after watching the second movie, you nailed the points that are in the story before it even came out
4:14 THIS MAN PREDICTED EARTH-42 MILES 3 YEARS AGO LMFAO
Came back after seeing the second one to say HOW MUCH they doubled down on that color scheme around miles’ path
"Into a hero that would make his uncle proud"
* Crying *
Did this man just predict that Miles would become the prowler 3 years early
yes
That bit were you talked about miles becoming the prowler aged amazingly
Bro predicted the future on the miles prowler thing
4:14 aged really well after Across the Spiderverse
Mans called him “Wilson Frisk.”

this video aged sooo well
This man was right, people was saying he was wrong, prowler is badass
One thing I love about this film is how they frame the twist that Prowler is Aaron to be a big shock for those that don't know, but still hits hard for those that already know the twist from the comics. When the twist is revealed in the apartment, it allows those in the dark to be surprised, but also focuses specifically on Miles' reaction for the ones who know. So instead of thinking "yeah, I know already," they can still feel the impact of the reveal through Miles and how devastating it is for him
Spoliers for Across the Spiderverse btw
"If Miles were to continue to follow Uncle Aron, he would become the next prowler"
Extremely true statement
I was just thinking that that’s crazy
Am I the only one who's questioning why KingPin killed Prowler, his OWN man, instead of the enemy, Miles?
He saw miles as a small boy in a store bought costume, prowler wasn't following orders and revealed himself so he was killed. Sounds way too hardcore but that's how it is.
My theory is that Miles' dad was originally meant to be the one who took the shot, but they didn't want to make it that dark.
Jr gre@t theory
amazin ness KingPin knew Myles was his enemy, he said "what are you doing? Take him out!" Before shooting Prowler
Perhaps to Kingpin, failure/a disloyal subordinate is a bigger problem than a troublesome kid. He was ready to shoot Doc Ock when it looked like the collider experiment had horribly backfired.
The way he flips off of roof tops and flips backwards is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen
Haha
Hahaha!
Ahhahahh

crazy after watching across the spiderverse, bonkers
The Prowler was my favorite part of Spiderverse
There's no such thing as a perfect movie, but Spiderverse comes pretty close.
Quick note: The distorted "siren" sound is actually a sound of an elephant!
You can find a video on youtube how much work was put into creating this sound! I really recommend watching it.
4:14 Listen again to this statement AFTER you see Spiderverse 2 👌
This aged really well with across the spiderverse confirming your suspicion that he would have become the prowler without the influence of a spiderman in his universe
The way miles defeats the final boss is also inspired by his uncle's "move".
With such an exaggerated swagger of a black teen
It's actually Peter b Parker's move
@@notthecat9719 they are almost same

After the new movie across the spider verse has came out you were right. The shifting of miles color from purple/green to red and blue he was suppose to be the next prowler
This aged so well. Hard read on miles being the next prowler
This video hits even harder after watching Across the Spiderverse
4:15 He actually predicted the sequel.
Bro spoiled across the spiderverse for himself by making this video
Loved Prowler. Was like Spider-Man’s Deathstroke and uncle Ben rolled into one. And his theme tone was so chilling and dark. Was so good
Ain’t no way this man predicted the whole next movie 4:17
You were so right with the prowler colours at 4:14 lol
Dude, you were spot on! You were ahead of your time.
Charlie Heatherly review the Fred trilogy
Well spoken, seconded 🤘
I believe one of the creators said Prowler's siren is actually a distorted elephant call. It's so unsettling and unfamiliar, it's great
4:00 after seeing across the spiderverse, this was spot on!
