As a French Canadian, both Tintin and Astérix were staples of my childhood. They are extremely popular in the French speaking communities and countries as it’s the original languages of both Tintin and Astérix.
In the Netherlands a lot of Belgian and French comics were very popular. I read a lot of Tin Tin ( Kuifje ), Asterix & Obelix, Lucky Luke and Suske & Wiske...and really enjoyed the cartoons
Asterix is barely heard of in the UK these days. The books were popular when I was growing up. But like tin Tin it’s more French were it’s very popular indeed.
Same for Germany. It was really big when I grew up, but now you barely hear anything about it. Some years ago there were asterix movies which were pretty successfull, but that really was the last thing I heard anything about Asterix.
So true! And I still have almost most of the Asterix comic books in the house. Now to buy Asterix and Smurfs games I need to look in France and Netherlands.😢
I'm from Switzerland, and while Tintin is/was well known here, I'd say Asterix & Obelix were significantly bigger and more popular. Also your pronunciaton of Obelix was quite alright.

Sensible Soccer is almost like a religion for a certain segment of UK gamers in the 90s. It was the best playing football game, hands down cos of "after touch". It was Japan+Europe exclusive...it's normally the main PAL SNES game Americans lament not having over the pond
@@bryangarcia5599 no it is not an European exclusive but if you want to play in any language different to Japanese is the way to go. It had different releases across Europe in English, French, German and even Spanish which was very strange back in those days.
To french Canadians, Astérix is very popular still. There's always reruns on Canadian francophone television channels during the holidays. The moment Astérix slap em all came for the PS4 I pre ordered the collectors edition for my son.

Terranigma is the real pal exclusive gem, yes it was also released in Japan, but the language barrier makes it impossible to play. - leaving the pal version as the only English language release!
I'm in the UK and both Tintin and Asterix are not really that big, they did have a couple of TV shows in their time, but nothing huge. Now in french speaking territories they're massive.
Cannon Fodder is the greatest game ever made! How it doesn’t exist today is baffling! The ranking system via survival was just so amazing and gave you attachment to those brave soldiers who achieved the high dizzy ranks!!
Both Asterix & Obelix and The Smurfs were super popular here in Germany when I was a kid in the 90s. I mostly remember Lucky Luke, TinTin and Spirou from comics I read in the library. The Smurfs is the only one that kinda had a revival, you don't hear much about the other ones anymore. Oh, and pretty much anyone here called it Super Nintendo or S-N-E-S. I remember being confused when a Russian friend said "Sness".
NES was always just "Nintendo" here, and SNES was just "Super Nintendo". But I never heard anyone spell out the letters when speaking Norwegian, that would sound kind of weird here. If using the shorter names it would just be Nes and Snes. Same as we say Nato, not N-A-T-O.
@@stimorolication9480 It's so interesting how it is different in every country. When it comes to just saying the word or spelling out every letter, I feel like it's pretty random here in Germany. We also say Nato, but then there's A-D-A-C or words where both are common like RAF.
In sensible soccer, you can select if teams are controlled by player or computer. Once, it goes red and is labelled C for Com, twice is blue for Player. Honestly, I still love playing it to this very day over any fifa
Cannon Fodder was a huge hit on the Amiga, made by one of the best developers of the Amiga golden age. Definitely a good time. A really unique and fun RTS-like. Asterix and Obelix are huge cultural icons in France, and are very popular all over Europe. Any new Asterix comic (which are released irregularly) tends to receive preorders in the many millions. A lot of the humor is based around puns and French politics and current-events, which makes it all the more extraordinary that they are still translated well into other languages. In France we even have a Asterix theme park, which is one of the most popular theme parks in the country. There are two very good Asterix games on the Sega Master System, which are probably the best games the franchise has ever received. Lucky Luke is another comic that has been very successful in Europe. It also had a very popular cartoon spin-off. Sensible Soccer (by the same devs as Cannon Fodder!) vs Kick-Off was, during the early 90s, a HOTLY debated issue on many school playgrounds! Sensible Soccer is indeed a game you can play, and it may well be one of (if not THE) best selling games on the Amiga. The SNES port isn't quite as good as the Amiga original, but I still find it quite fun once you figure it out. If you want to get a good British/Euro perspective of what gaming was like on the other side of the pond, check out Kim Justice's UA-cam channel. She has many excellent videos about the Amiga, SNES, and Mega Drive in Europe, including long form documentaries on a lot of major European game developers, including Sensible Software (of Sensible Soccer/Cannon Fodder fame). She also has videos specifically on Cannon Fodder and Sensible Soccer.
Asterix also had a great arcade game by Konami. Cannon Fodder and Sensible Soccer were indeed among the most popular games on the Amiga, and those are still the best versions. However the Mega Drive port of Cannon Fodder plays pretty well and looks as good. Even Mega-lo-Mania plays well on Mega Drive. Super Nintendo unfortunately wasn't as well suited for Amiga ports due to the low screen resolution. I have never been able to get into any console ports of Sensi. SWOS on Amiga is the best. It even filled up our PAL screens with full 320x256 resolution. Perfection.
@@stimorolication9480 oh yeah I forgot about the arcade game. You are absolutely right, that was a great game. With great animations that really capture the feel of Asterix. And yes that is a good point, the Mega Drive was very well suited for Amiga ports. Another World and Flashback both play better on the Mega Drive than the SNES, I think (Flashback is fine on the SNES, but the MD version is better; Another World on the SNES had too much lag imo), and I quite enjoyed the Mega Drive version of Leander too. It also had some pretty decent PC ports. I like that with the older generations of consoles, like the SNES and Mega Drive, each console had a very strong identity of its own. You recognize a Mega Drive game or a SNES game when you see and hear it. Different graphics, different sounds, but also different in which genres and styles were more common. That's probably one of the reasons people are still so attached to those two consoles after all these years. I love both, because they each have their own strengths, and very strong and unique game libraries that feel very different. 😁 And while it's not a console, that goes for the Amiga too. Unique sounds, unique graphics, and a wonderful game library with some really unique and fairly experimental games (Sensi and Cannon Fodder included).
@@Jayce_Alexander I agree with every single word. I had lots of games for the Amiga, in large parts due to the rampant piracy. We had very few games for the Mega Drive, and didn't even have a SNES. It's been great getting to know all those console games I missed out on, and love both platforms now.
Spirou is more pronounced as "Spee-rooh" He's not from the same creator as Tintin (Herge) but quite a lot of other artists (from whom Franquin is probably the most noteworthy) worked on him.
when selecting your team in Sensible scoccer, you have to press the button twice to make it controlleble.. C = For computer P = For player controlled 🙂
Sensible Soccer was definitely a huge deal in the UK. In the early days you were either a Sensible Soccer guy or a striker guy. I enjoyed both but I played more Sensible Soccer on the PC and I had to have a special boot disk just to have enough system resources to run it. Then International Superstar Soccer turned up and changed the game. I too was waiting for Terranigma to turn up. And get a phat S tier.
I enjoyed Daze Before Christmas probably more than I should have just because of the scenes in between stages; something about Santa acting as a badass action hero just cracked me up, and the power-up that turns you into... Satan Claus? Not sure what that was supposed to be. I could've sworn that I'd seen Waterworld, too! Might've been in Nintendo Power, though; sometimes, they had games they thought would come out, but never did. Excellent soundtrack, though.
Asterix and Obelix are ultra huge duo in Europe, double thhe strange to see only of them running around alone. ( btw if you have not seen the old cartoons and the French movies, you're missing out a lot. Like really really reaaaaally a LOT !
I love that you're covering PAL regions games too. As much as love MJR and crew, most of the content, such as the hidden gem videos, seem to be based around the US merket (which is understandable, obviously)... BUT, as a 35 year old Brit, who still has no idea why Final Fantasy VI is regarded a better game than VII, I say 'hats off, Sir!!"
Sensible Soccer is perhaps the best Football game of all time, you definitely need to play it. When selecting teams make sure to mark one as player team and one as computer. You probably set both teams as computer.
I always forget that Mr. Nutz is not a PAL exclusive, though that's the version I bought. That U.S. Mr. Nutz was super expensive back when I was looking for it, I'm sure that NTSC version is a ridiculous price now. It's a fun game, even the Game Boy Color version is really close to the SNES port.
While CANNON FODDER and THE HUMANS were PAL exlusives for the SNES, they both were released here in the USA for the Atari Jaguar. In fact, The Humans (released here as Evolution: Dino Dudes) was originally developed for the Jaguar, having initially starting its development as an Atari Lynx game, and then shifted over as a Jaguar project.
Happy Easter John! Great feature showing gebs24. Keep the retro game/system talk coming, I have picked up allot from hearing your gaming history and know how! You introduced me to congo bongo I had never even heard of it. One of my favorite arcade games now! Equally as cool to hear about the places you were playing arcades/ buying your retro games! Like burger chef! That was new to me, great history to find. Some Atari 5200/7800 jaguar content would be cool or sega 32x/Saturn. Or expanding to vinyl records, vintage toys etc
Your giggle at 16:20 almost had soda coming out of my nose.. I'm not sure if you do these things to intentionally be funny or not but they make me bust out laughing. 🤣🤣🤣
In Sensible Soccer when you choose a team, you have to press the button TWICE, so the C next to the team name becomes a P. This way you tell the SNES which team is controlled by the Player and by the Computer.
A lot of what you say is from the UK, isn't. Europe is a collection of countries, and games came from the likes of France (infogrames) and Germany (Factor 5) amongst many others. You need to do a bit more research here
Sensible Soccer did come out in the US, but it’s called Championship Soccer ‘94. And like others have said it’s really good and well worth giving it another try!
- I can't help but when I look at Archer Maclean's Dropzone that the Astronaut guy looks like the character from the NES game Solar Jetman. 😃 - Also wasn't Tintin on the cable station The Family Channel back in the 90s?🤔 - Man that Winter Gold game looks incredible for SNES graphics and visuals at that time. Interesting exclusive games. Surprised some of these didn't make it over here. Thanks again for making this video JohnRiggs. ( P.S. By the way I loved Waterworld as well. Kevin Costner was good as the main character and Dennis Hopper just always plays the best flamboyant villainy characters. 😀)
Spirou is also a Belgo-Franco comic like Tintin but from different creators. The graphical style is very different but I understand how they look similar in game form. Both are focused on adventure and have a journalism/investigative theme. But Spirou is more modern in its humor and have more wacky/fantastical characters.
I dont know what's going on with your play of Sensible Soccer but it's one of the best football games pre-Fifa and International Superstar Soccer. I'd argue it IS the best football game pre-FIFA and ISS. The best version was Sensible World of Soccer for the Amiga - you could play 20 seasons of a career.
Asterix and the Vikings is a decent modern Asterix movie if anyone wants to check it out. If you get the English dub, Paul Giamatti is the voice of Asterix.
For the Waterworld thing maybe your video store had imports? I remember mine did and they would come with a region converter. The ones you had to put a local game in the back slot and the foreign one in the front.
I've always been amazed at how much of the "bande dessinée" stuff has gone unnoticed in the US and UK. Anyone could say that they have something against the French (or Belgians) 😆
That Winter Gold seems hella impressive, that probably would have been popular here. Surprisingly good frame rate and playability for a game of that type since most of these games were like half the frame rate.
Yeah, Dirt Racer and Winter Gold are Super FX games. I agree Winter Gold is really cool, I should spend more time with it, as well as with Super Dropzone. I own boxed copies of both, but haven't played them much so far.
Tin tin popular in most of Europe, not UK. Astrix is crazy popular in France. Not UK. Smurfs is big in the rest of Europe as well not UK. Also, Europe and UK even though one and the same are worlds apart. With the vast majority of stuff. And finally, whilst over remember that there is England, Ireland/northern ireland, Scotland and Wales. The UK is not England. Many peeps from the US seem to think it's one place. People get very angry when you say they are English, when they aren't (Scottish and the like)
TinTin is based on a Belgian comic book series as is the Smurfs and Lucky Luke. While the same writer worked also on Astrix comics but these are from France. Spirou is also a Belgian comic but the writer is French I think. I loved these comics as a kid.
Spirou is just like Tintin a Franco-Belgian comic strip. Same with Marsupilami if you remember that one. Asterix is very popular in Europe, and that one is also Franco-Belgian. Comic strip, cartoons, live action films and a big amusement park near to Paris. Like your Liverpool stuff. Having a baaaad season though.

Cannon Fodder originally came out for the Amiga. It also came out for the Genesis known as the Mega Drive in Europe.
Awesome scarf! Love how you ranked the Man UTD game F before playing it. 😂 You certainly are a Liverpool fan 👍
I LOVE TinTin. One of my favorite properties. :)
You need to do a bit more research here
Cannon fodder was available in the US on the turbographx 3DO and jaguar
Sensible Soccer did come out in the US, but it’s called Championship Soccer ‘94. And like others have said it’s really good and well worth giving it another try!
Tintim Cartoons are fantastic. Real, real classics with captivating and eye-catching stories for all ages.
My sister and I used to play a lot of Asterix & Obelix when we were kids. It's fun but gets so difficult after a few levels.
- I can't help but when I look at Archer Maclean's Dropzone that the Astronaut guy looks like the character from the NES game Solar Jetman. 😃
- Also wasn't Tintin on the cable station The Family Channel back in the 90s?🤔
- Man that Winter Gold game looks incredible for SNES graphics and visuals at that time.
Interesting exclusive games. Surprised some of these didn't make it over here.
Thanks again for making this video JohnRiggs.
( P.S.
By the way I loved Waterworld as well. Kevin Costner was good as the main character and
Dennis Hopper just always plays the best flamboyant villainy characters. 😀)
We had a Hanna Barbera land in Houston back in the day. That was neat. I liked Waterworld also... and Postman.
Spirou is also a Belgo-Franco comic like Tintin but from different creators. The graphical style is very different but I understand how they look similar in game form. Both are focused on adventure and have a journalism/investigative theme. But Spirou is more modern in its humor and have more wacky/fantastical characters.
Super International Cricket, Rank A. Doesn't fail as a cricket game.
@Jimmy R Howzat!?
Dropzone was on the C64. I've always thought it came after Defender, but we're talking months only.
That Arsenal quote from the IT Crowd made me laugh. 🤣Thanks John!!
Daze was an Australian exclusive from what I read. I've never seen a copy in the UK.
YES!!!!! A new ranking video🤟
You missed all the English Hudson and Konami exclusives. Bomberman 3, twinbee, the fireman etc. All great games.
My father has a longtime friend in Switzerland. every year or so id get a package with an Asterix comicbook in it.
I just deep dived into European exclusives on my emulators, this list is well timed! Cannon Fodder is definitely getting checked out first!
Ahhh a fellow man of culture... Riggs, I don't have you pegged as an IT Crowd fan... Black Books and Father Ted are gold too.
Love me some Riggs ranking vids. Would love to see Colecovision, SMS & Genesis games get the Riggs ranking treatment one day ;)
As an Australian Super International Cricket was my jam
I thought “Ryan Giggs Champion World Class Soccer” was a PAL exclusive too? I had that at the time, assumed it was UK only.
Germany checking in .Happy Eastern John🐰🐰🐇🐣
I was wondering when your next ranking video was going to happen. Thank you for the great content my brotha
I'm pretty sure there was a Waterworld SNES here in the US. I'm pretty positive I rented it from Blockbuster. I definitely remember playing that game.
For the Waterworld thing maybe your video store had imports? I remember mine did and they would come with a region converter. The ones you had to put a local game in the back slot and the foreign one in the front.
Probably should wait 'til the end to comment, but Cannon Fodder was originally an Amiga game, and supports the Mario Paint mouse.
I've always been amazed at how much of the "bande dessinée" stuff has gone unnoticed in the US and UK. Anyone could say that they have something against the French (or Belgians) 😆
Especially since Lucky Luke (Wild West) and The Blue Coats (American Civil War) take place in the US.
Hah! I went to the Smurfs museum in Brussels while on sabbatical. Surprisingly, I was actually very impressed.
Cannon Fodder is an Amiga game. One of the best.
I played Cannon Fodder on my DOS PC growing up. It was a lot of fun, though I doubt it would control as well with a SNES pad.
Astrix , cannon fodder amazing games, F1,Brian lara and kick off were pretty good too
OMG you never got Cannon Fodder!?! It’s an aiming games and one of the big ones from my childhood! Also looking forward to OLL 23 see you there!
I'm surprised there were no comments on the Waterworld soundtrack. Game may not be great, but the bgm is iconic.
People get very angry when you say they are English, when they aren't (Scottish and the like)
I have a PAL Super Mario World. Found it in a used book store in Arizona
That cricket gameplay is gold
Played Canon Fodder 1 and 2 on Dos back in the day. Amiga/Dos game ported here. nice.
LOVE the Scarf Riggs!!!! YNWA Have fun. in jolly ole England
