I got my NES for my 10th b'day in 1992. My Mum (sadly no longer with me) took me to Toys R Us, but unfortunately they didn't have any consoles left in stock on the shelf. They did however, offer us the display model unboxed, and threw in Solar Jetman along with Mario Bros. Man, I love that game! It took some getting used to the control of the pod. But I have such fond memories. I recently played through it on the Xbox via Rare Replay, even though I still have my original copy!

Battletoads is the obvious best game, Snake rattle n roll a close-ish second. Probably the two games I played most on nes, other than Mario 3. Lot of people complain that Battletoads is too difficult but much like alot of games from the time, it's all about memorization. The enemies, even the bosses, do the same pattern every single time. I beat it when I was 10 after lots and lots of practice.

Such a great game. I played this game so much and actually got to the point where I could go through every level and get to the moon without dying. But I never could beat the giant foot on the moon. If your rapid fire tongue hits stopped for even a split second, the foot’s health would fully recover. And it was impossible because of the foot constantly moving, moon physics, and asteroids launching at you from four directions.

The guild challenges were a nice twist, though got a bit ridiculous later on, especially with the already janky platforming. That game caused a lot of conflicts/choice words between us, but once we got passed the ice level and the rat maze (those circular gears chasing us), we knew we could do it! The trick was each one of us was in charge of a section of the screen (Wookie Hole). Once he mastered the turbo tunnel, that level actually became one of the easy levels. I was fortunate enough to find the Rare Collection for Xbox One. So many great titles that I will have to dig deep into like Snake Rattle and Roll.
Another great ranking video as Rare was so great for the NES and beyond.

Wrestlemania Challenge was a lot of fun once Nintendo Power advertised the secret that allowed your tag team partner to enter the ring and interfere in the match. Total game changer.

W&W3 is pretty damn amazing when you get into it, but the huge open world stuff will throw some players off. Underrated gem in my opinion.

I feel the same way! It's a game that you have to really delve into to appreciate although I'll admit that it's a polarizing game (definitely doesn't feel anything like W&W1 and 2). But I'll never forget the feeling I got when I defeated that huge dragon in the lower dungeon and started to make way back up the secret passage to fight Malkil (sp?). I recall my hands being quite sweaty due to the excitement of finally having a chance to take that villain down!

@@tigmo55 Oh yeah, that long road to get to the final boss is memorable and tense. I admit I probably wouldn't have liked W&W3 if I didn't try to get into it, but it is very fun when I understood and got into it.

One of my all-time favorites is missing - Rare developed the NES port of (Sid Meier’s) Pirates!, which was published by Konami under the Ultra label. David Wise even reworked a bit of the music from Pirates! in the score for Donkey Kong Country!

12:59 I wish Metroid did the different gravity in different places. A gravity suit that actually manipulates gravity instead of just walking in water which is lame IMO. Great vid!

Wonderful idea and a fantastic video, John! I was hoping that you would eventually do a Rare NES video and this one was a blast to watch! There were even a few games on this list that I didn't know (or simply forgot) that Rare developed! I agree with your ratings almost across the board although I'd have to bump Snake Rattle 'n Roll to the A tier. I love that game immensely and I finally managed to beat it after 30+ years of trying! :) Battletoads totally deserves an S and R.C. Pro-Am II is definitely an A. As far as Wizards and Warriors goes, I actually am a fan of the third game but at the same time, I completely understand your point. It is an oddball for sure. Something about it really drew me in though. Great list in any case!
