- After 1 FULL YEAR of testing this budget long range rifle through all 4 seasons, we are finally confident enough to issue our full experienced opinion on this system!
This makes shooting out to 1,000 yards WAY TOO EASY! Are you looking for a long range precision rifle for less than $1,000 that will get you on target in a hurry and is very easy to learn? The Savage Model 10 FCP-SR .308 Win with 24" heavy fluted barrel and the Primary Arms 4-14x44 FFP ACSS HUD scope is a great place to start. This is an incredible long range configuration that is very affordable. You can be hitting steel out to 800 yards or even 1,000 yards in a matter of seconds NOT minutes! TiborasaurusRex
Nooooooooo!!!
Done !
TiborasaurusRex i hope it doesn't get taking down I have been watching your video's for year's and love the information you give. Fight back if they do sir. If you go i go!
If you can’t get good accuracy from a Model 110 built in the last 25 years my friend, it’s YOU.
The Savage Model 10 FCP with a FFP Primary Arms 4-14 x 44 was my first long range precision rifle all thanks to this channel 2 years ago. Thank you Rex! Keep the vids coming and God bless. Hope to see you in Michigan at some point.
I bought my wife this gun in 6.5 creedmoor. The trigger went down to 13 oz and it shoots 1/2 min all day with hornady precision hunter and hornady match. Absolutely amazing for a $400 rifle and $135 Nikon buckmaster 2 scope
Anyone else get stoked by the music in the beginning after the many hours you spent watching his Sniper 101 series?
I’ve been shooting this rifle since it 1st entered production with the SWFA SS 10X scope and it’s just simply a tack driver with 155, 168, & 175gr match bullets. It also shoots good Factory hunting ammo into an inch all day long. Been shooting Savage since the Model 99 days and I’ve embarrassed quite a few “Schnobs” over the years with them. I have nothing against high end rifles, my late father in law was a custom rifle builder and I’ve shot em all however, I just can’t justify spending big $$$ when Savage does it just as well for 1/4 of the price. 😎
Pretty amazing for a production rifle you can go buy anywhere nationwide really.
I bought this rifle about a year before your review. Topped it with a really neat fixed 6 power Nimrod scope. Surplus off the original Galil sniper rifles. Consistent hits out to 1000. Love this rifle.
Great review Rex. You pretty much just reviewed what I'll be using. Plus I was recently told at a local gun shop that the accutrigger is now standard on all Savage rifles. And PA's 4 to 14 powered ACSS HUD reticle makes it even easier since the reticle was fully vetted & tested before it was sold on the market.
Excellent series, Rex. Thank you for your time and efforts.
I absolutely love my Savage 10 rifle in .308. It's a workhorse and Savage uses their Model 10 chassis for a ton of their models. Tons of aftermarket parts for the folks that want to get into that. That accu-trigger makes it a real joy to shoot. I was able to hit a steel bear silhouette at 880 yards (1/2 mile) the first time I shot it.
My only .30 cal can is also an SDN-6, so I appreciate you testing yours. I've had similar accuracy with mine attached. I usually shoot this rifle unsupressed, but it's nice to have the option, so I swapped the factory brake for the 51-tooth.
Just had two friends buy thinset up. They were "Zero to Deadly" in 10 min! Thanks Rex.
I have a very similar rig. Been waiting to see this. Thank You sir!
I’m glad to see this review!!! It is the exact setup I have for hunting the “Elusive Whitetail Deer”
Thanks for the review, Rex and co-conspirators. 😉
I really wish they produced this rifle in 7mm-08.
Rex, I took your first video to heart and got the rifle with the SWFA SS 10x42 fixed power scope. I'm quite pleased with it and though I like this PA scope, I don't see myself making a switch from the SWFA at all. You really did your viewers a good turn buy making these two vids because not all of us have thousands to spend but we still want workable high value systems.
Been waiting for this video thank you so much!!!!
I still can’t believe how accurate this rifle is. I topped my off with a Barra Hero FFP 6-26x50 scope. And you are right that the magazine takes some getting use to. The first time to the range I felt cheated. Not anything to do with this rifle. I was a little upset with how much I spent on my Ruger precision and this gun is just as accurate. Check my scope base after watching this video. Nice and tight. Savage must be watching your channel.
I love Primery Arms scopes! Nice videos my friend... I've discoverd you 1 month ago... Greetings from an Army Sniper in Greece.
Lou's face, when you handed it to him. priceless
Andrew Young it's one thing to say it's his but then actually hand it over is completely different !! Heck ya get handed a completely vetted rifle from Rex Awesome!!
I've been waiting for this!
Thank you very much for doing the two budget setup videos. I have been trying to decide on a good kit that will be accurate out to 800 yards.
I have that exact rifle and scope setup and absolutely love it. I painted mine in camo.
I’ve been shooting Savage since way before they made the Accutrigger and they’ve always shot straight as an arrow. Been shooting the Model 10 FCP since the AccuStock came out in .308 and I’ve embarrassed a lot of guys with expensive rifles using that rifle. SWFA Fixed 10X on the rifle and it’s just dandy.😎
Bought one. Been struggling with replacing the stock. Like yours it is a half minute gun. So I decided to leave it alone.
I bought this rifle after you posted the first video last year. $385 after the Savage rebate! Topped it the SWFA 10x. Regularly a half-minute gun.
You really can't beat Savage actions. Even the Savage Target action wins F-Class FTR national level events. I also own a couple SWFA 10x scopes. It's my default scope. Build a gun, it gets that scope.
Mines topped with a Falcon M18+. Pretty happy with it.
Nice! I paid $900 for my FCP-SR because I wanted the older, hard-to-get AI version but I'm still super happy with it. Same scope as you. They're good guns!
PERFECT COMBO! I got a Savagr 112BVSS back in the late 90's, and I put a LEATHERWOOD 8-32X50MM scope on it instead, but just as happy :-)
Just Someguy Dude, but a Savage 10p for $500 and put a SWDA 10x42 scope for $299... You'll have a rifle that can put a 5 round group through a quarter-sized group at 100yds... If you have enough space to shoot 500-1000yds, then you'll put together AMAZINGLY tight groups...
I'm a three time savage Precision rifle builder, and I approve this message. Sub minute all day baby.
Ti-Tibo-Tibo..rus-x. Can't even type it, but you are so good at that! I learned so much from your videos. Thank you
Cool ill be picking up one of these scopes for my old Savage 110 FP ..haha made before the accu trigger but it has a pretty good factory one so and I'm used to it ...I still want a 7mm-300
Been waiting for this
I run that same glass on my 700, 308, 26” heavy barrel. I freakin love that scope.
I wish I could say the same. I purchased this rifle 2.5 years ago and had much different results. I did have the same problem on the scope base coming loose. However, not matter what I tried, could not group better than 3.5 inches. Finding a deep gouge in the barrel, I sent it back to Savage. They were great and replaced the barrel and readjusted the headspace. I was able to get roughly .75 MOA with reloads, most others were around 1 inch MOA (their guarantee with the rifles). Since then I have modified it with a Shilen barrel and MDT stock and can group .3 MOA consistently. Overall, I like the rifle and would recommend it to others, but remember if it doesn't shoot as well, send it back to Savage and they'll help you out!
That is nice ! Did you keep the plastic stock on it?
Hey REX! Huge Fan, your videos got me serious about long range almost 4 years ago now (feels like a lot longer lol) and since then I have got my father into it and its now one of the activities we share which means a ton to me as we didnt always do too much together other than hunting in the fall. I was wondering if you would consider putting a limited version of your seminars up on the internet (for sale of course, not a free thing) so that those of us who live WAY to far away to every make it out could get some of that LR wisdom. I live in the Yukon, in Canada, so odds are I will never make it down to do any of your courses but it would be awesome to have access to a portal where one could buy your theory courses and be able to take that knowledge out the range and apply it. Aside from wanting this personally I can tell you from my own experience as a Custom UAV designer and Operator that online courses can be very lucrative and require very little upkeep once teh initial product is developed and published. Either way, love your videos man and thanks for all your amazing advice on youtube over the years.
Picked up the same rifle the day after Christmas for $379 after $100 savage rebate. Field and stream exclusive with a heavier bull barrel which is threaded. Mine doesn’t have fluting on the barrel or a detachable magazine. From what I’ve read these exclusives are usually made by savage with last years spare parts for the big box stores. I mounted a Tract Tekoa Hd 4-16x44 BDC scope that uses Schott glass with weaver tactical 6 hole rings. Gun shoots great .I’d have to pay 2or 3 times more to get a slight edge in accuracy. These guns are hard to beat for the price to quality ratio.
buddy2280 “last years spare parts”?
How utterly ridiculous.
The “special” was their model 10T. It has a heavier barrel, without fluting.
The muzzle on the model 10T has a muzzle diameter of 0.85”. It’s the heaviest barrel variant they make.
The model 10T was built for cabellas. It came in 308 or 6.5CM. 4 round mag not 10.
The 10T is identical to the predator max line of rifles, without a camo stock.
The 10T is the cabellas special. Came with 5R rifling too.
If you’ve got 6 lands and grooves they aren’t the 5R profile.
The rifle Rex has isn’t the cabellas special. The 10t has a thicker, heavier barrel than the fluted barrels.
Man I wish I’d have had this video a couple months ago! I have the Savage 10T which is a Cabela’s exclusive with a 5rd mag and no fluting on the barrel, though otherwise the same. I also had the scope base come loose after a hundred rounds or so. Degreasing and using loctite is definitely necessary, but other than that it’s a great budget option.
You can also buy bottom metal for this rifle, mine now takes AICS magazines, not those cheesy Svavge mags
Speaking of the scope mounts, a friend of mine brought me a Remington 30-06 to zero for him for deer season. Bore sighted it and the first two rounds were touching. I thought, awesome we got this, made adjustments and fired 3 rounds that were all over the place. While scratching my head I looked down at the rifle and the scope had slipped backwards in the rings over an inch. Come to find out it was a package deal and I pulled everything off and remounted it. Shot like a dream. If someone does purchase a rifle that has any scope or rings or bases, always take them off and remount.
You look like Ray liota in goodfellas with that sport coat!
I've got the 110 tactical 20 inch and love it
I like the circles that represent the size of a persons head for ranging a target.
Thanks to Rex's instructions and tutorials. From Dick's, now at Field and Stream: I bought 2 Savage VT-308 24" heavy barrel accutrigger for $399.00 on sale during Christmas.. Put a SWFA 12x42 mil-rad scopes on sale too, $249.00. My son has exact same set up. My son's is the better of the two, but both shoot 1/4 inch groups with Federal Premium 168gr Sierra Matchking at 100 yards. At Ammo and ambient temp at 68 degrees, muzzle velocity range 2697, 2697, 2697 2706, 2687 with a Magneto-speed. My muzzle velocity was little wider 2674, 2665, 2630, 2666, 2643. Both zeroed at 200 yards. I have shot both at 500 yards and very tight groups at 2.7 mils: vertical 2 1/2 inches spread, horizontal 7 inches spread. They both also like 168 A-max Hornady (not the Hornady Black). Hope to bring them soon to a farther range. I only wish I had ranges that went further.
Just picked up the 20” version of this super excited with an swfa 10x42 i hope i can use it to learn on for awhile its the new version with the accu stock hope that doesn’t change anything
Great video, its hilarious, i just shared the old video with someone looking for this kind of a setup this morning!
Staying tuned for the painting video!!
Frank Plissken same here I'd like to know the proper way it should be done .
Rex did a video about sponge painting an AK and it turned out basically invisible! Go to his painting playlist and check it out!
Frank Plissken I've watched most of his videos guess I missed that one Thanks !
Savage makes a great rifle for the cash. I am on my 3rd. A mk2 22lr, 111 300 Winchester Magnum and 110 BA 338 Lapua Magnum.
As a newly married guy, with my first child on the way...i appreciate the budget approach. Im looking to outfit my Savage 10T with the similar Apollo scope they are coming out with for 6.5 CM.
preparedDUDE thanks
nc_classics _ love savages for the Money can't beat them!
Can't wait to get mine next month.
Alot of people don't realize that you can get great accuracy out of these budget minded rifles and it also helps to practice at the range
In my opinion Savage Arm’s makes one of the best firearms in the business. Another one is Weatherby.
My Savage BA-110 in 338LM with a Vortex PST Gen-ll FFP 5-25x50 is an unbeatable unstoppable combination!
Ive got that exact scope on my model 10 ba stealth it is scary accurate i love it
Awesome rex you the man
Nice review Rex, thanks!!! Could you PLEASE also do a review on the Remington 700 VTR rifle in .308 Win. ...PLEASE???!!!
I have this rifle topped with an Athlon Argos btr and love it. Although I plan to get rid of the junky mag. Going with accurate metal dbm.
Also, my rail came loose as well. It's worth mentioning these are egr 20 moa rails on these particular rifles.
On mine i upgraded to a accurate mag bottom metal and it works awesome with the aic mags
I boguht this rifle on sale and i LOVE it. Only thing im not keen on is the mag and the slop in the bolt but it JUST WORKS and you get waht you paid for. I ended up giving it to my father to get him out tot he range because he refuses to buy a range rifle and tries to shoot long range with his ultralight hunting rifles.
I have one of these rifles with the super sniper scope and it is pretty much a tack driver!
solid report
From John Lovell to brother Rex, good to see you commenting on the cream of the crop, Mrgunsngear. You're definitely among them. God bless you, sir. And thank you for serving.
Dang Rex after I watched your initial video when you posted it I bought the cabelas exclusive savage model 10T, swfa 10x42 ss optic, Burris xtr rings, and a Caldwell xla bipod. It's a great little shooter I got about 650-700 in it, my only downside is it's not threaded because at the time of purchased it wasn't an option for that model.
Nice video and good shooting
My Savage rifles are unreasonably accurate for the price I paid for them.
Cole Dedhand I have heard the same thing.
Cole Dedhand my Savage 300 win mag and 338 lapua are sub minute to 700 which is as far as I have pushed them.
Their rimfires are good out to 400 yards also. At 100 yards with the cheap plastic stocks, they are sub MOA if you do your part and use sufficiently powerful optics.
I’ve been shooting them since the Model 99 days and you are absolutely correct. I see zero reason to pay more or own anything that costs more.
Less then 5 min says 308. Thank you! Is the best gun store firearm for distance. Everyone should know this!
That is the most beautiful plane powerful rifle ✌️😉
Same issue with my 338 stealth the base came off also the screws only threaded in like 3/16 I went with the nightforce mount and the problem was solved
I have a similar set up only with the 110 Storm Southpaw in .30-06 and have the same observation about the first shot through a cold bore is off slightly and the rest are grouping at around .86" at 100yards with cheap walmart tier hunting ammo such as PPU 150gr softpoints or Winchester Super-X 150gr powerpoint or whatever they call the same stuff.
My Thompson Center Compass in .308 shoots lights out with lighter bullets and cost me less than $300. It also is threaded barrel for suppressor.
Mike Simpson the compass is a hunting rifle. Skinny pencil barrel built for hunting.
Meaning taking a single shot,and maybe a follow up shot,but that’s it.
My brother has a compass in 22-250,and I’ve got a couple of dimensions. One in 243,the other in 7RM for the mountains if I’m stuck pushing bush.
The savage above isn’t built for the same type of application. The savage is built to handle more rounds in succession,to be more consistent even when very hot and the model 10T was the rifle offered to police services.
So your compass is a great entry level hunting rifle.
The model 10 above is more along the lines of a precision rifle. And based on its accuracy and consistency the term “precision” absolutely fits describing that savage
Heck yeah!!!
Re: Your comment at the ~9:15 mark, that is why I glass bed everything on my rifles. Any pillars and recoil lugs are an absolute must and I also glass bed the scope base to the receiver and the rings to the base. Nothing is moving, or can move for that matter. It's tight.
I do the same
I've owned three. Getting ready for number four.
Have some fun with that can. Get some 220 grain Lapua subsonics and watch that gun work at 100 yards. Shhhhhhh
Love my savage rifle's model 12's are very accurate!
love mine, I have one in 308 and 6.5 CM
Another great buy even cheaper yet is the Mossberg Patriot rifle it isn't a heavy barrel or threaded but damn it's accurate and very affordable I payed like $250. With a not to great scope on it for hunting, but even with crappy scope it performs well.
In regards to “budget” precision rifles, i am a huge fan of Howa. Outstanding rifles. I put together a very nice mini precision rifle with their Mini Action in 6.5 Grendel. Too much fun.
LastCaress7 Haha that's funny! I asked Rex about that rifle and caliber as a training rifle for my girl and my kids to start shooting longer ranges.
Its a really pleasant gun and hilariously accurate. I set mine up as a trainer and just for fun gun too. Handloads for the rifle make it seem like a custom rig. I added alot of stuff to the rifle but its still factory action and barrel. Your family will love it!
LastCaress7 Sir, how much did you pay for the 6.5 Grendel Howa?
Roger San Gabriel $409 on budsgunshop.com I think Howa has either quit importing these rifles or discontinued them. You can still buy the action itself at brownells.com too.
LastCaress7 From what I can tell the ballistics of the 123gr Hornady ELD match and a match 170 to 175gr 308 are pretty similar. With only about 10in more drop at 800yrds than a match 308.
The reason I choose the Target cam over a high end spotting camera was two reasons, price of a good spotting camera and limited range to clarity, and mirage, which mirage at Fort Gordon is significant because of the humidity in Georgia. And also I have no one to spot for me.
Rock On!!! Thanks for follow up!!!
I really enjoy ALL your excellent videos. One question---do you ever take a breath between words? LOL
Nice review and God bless.
Half moa, Rex you should reload for that rifle and refine a load. It'll be boringly accurate. Good video bud, I love my Savage
savage and primary arms stock just went up , i'm not buying anymore stuff because Rex said so, waittttttttttttt, brb my order just came, ty Rex gd news is great news now a days
love all you review and insight. Wanted to ask what's a good 556 bolt action rifle that you would recommend?
I picked up a mod 10 Ba stealth in 6.5 creedmor for the RX-17 02 live fire. The rifle shoots 0.5 moa or better, the butt stock kinda sucks and the front of the chassis is a little to flexible. If I could do it again I'd buy a cheap mod 10 and a different chassis like the Mirage URL. But who can complain over 0.5 moa for $950
Thanks so much for your input on these entry level rifles. I bought a SWFA 12 fixed based on your reviews and put it on a Savage model 10 walmart special in 243.. I consistently out shoot my nephew and his Remington 700 with vortex optics.. I would like your opinion on the best Savage bolt in 243 for long range target.. I checked and this model 10 FCP does not come in 243.. I reload and want to stick to one caliber... If possible I would like to go not much above 1000 $.. And anything less than that would be great... Thanks again Rex... I really like your videos....
This is the first one of your rifles I have seen in a bit. I like the hair cut, no homo.
Nice video.
Well.....it doesn't get any cheaper than the 6.5 Creedmoor TC Compass for 150$ after mail in rebate :-)
Hello Rex, do you recommend changing the stock to a modular chassis? I like my savage and the bolt is smooth as hot knife on butter. Just interested in your thoughts. Thanks
I like Rex he's down to earth kinda guy
I got one of those before it was cool.
No ruger predator in 6.5 CM?
Hell, my pic rail on my Savage Mk II FV-SR came loose due to greasy screws after about 900 rounds. And it is a .22 lr. So I can just imagine how quick yours worked loose.
Go on Rex.....put a tie on!
Awesome...
Hey REX what are your thoughts on a little 6.5 Grendel bolt action to reach out to 800yrds? My sons want to learn how to shoot out to longer ranges. I figured that would be a good place to start. It looks like that Savage you've been testing but its about a 30% smaller rifle.
I bought a savage model 12fv in 308. After i ran 5 rounds into it i was on target. My first group was 6 shots into exactly one inch. Since I've broken it in, it's shooting 3/4 inch groups with the factory stock with good ammo. When I'm doing my job. A 3/4 moa shooter. With hornady match ammo. Then I bought a mdt chassis. Shooting half moa now. Got a clamp on muzzle brake ordered. I'm hoping to shoot 3/8 groups. I'm not sure you can improve on half inch groups with anything. I'll let you know if it does
I was planning on buying a vortex pst gen2. So the new question is: should I save my money, buy the PA scope and save for a few years until I can spend a few more thousand dollars, or can I go ahead and buy the vortex?
Any chance for a look at the Bergara B-14 HMR? That one seems to be getting a lot of hype on the interwebs.
I own the 6.5 version. If you know your fundamentals of marksmanship mine is .50-.75 moa easily. Wish they made it with a 24" barrel.
I think this rifle is discontinued, is there another which is comparible? The Savage 110 tactical perhaps?
I was told in a certain situation that, weed by two steps on the stride, for hundred yards ,apx, ?
Enjoyed the video, need some professional guidance with a scope. I bought a Savage M-11 .243 Win Cal Trophy rifle and my question is what do you think would be a great scope for a Savage of this caliber. Thx for help. It came with a Nikon 3-9x40m but I didn’t really like it.
*Hey Rex!* have you looked into the Choate tactical stock for this rifle? I absolutely love mine! Thanks again for being a source of info for the average man, that's some saintly work!
Rex, this is tremendously helpful for folks like me who enjoy the precision rifle discipline but don't have the budget for Surgeon, AI, etc. I have the older FCP-SR (the one with AI bottom metal and mags in a digital camp stock) and the SWFA SS 10x42 scope. Love the setup. Would you recommend that I swap my SS for a Primary Arms? Part of me is interested in learning the basic fundamentals of ranging, etc on the mil reticle, but it's hard to argue with the all-in-one convenience of the ACSS reticle.
Sam, this isn't Rex, but maybe I can help. The ACSS reticle in the PA 4-14x44 HUD DMR is an amazing piece of design work by Dmitri over at PA; it is currently pretty much state of the art for what it is, regardless of cost. That's proven by the fact that prestigious manufacturer Trijicon licensed the ACSS reticle from Primary Arms. It is easy to use, fast, and works really well if used according to the PA instructions. Optimal system if you don't want to have to get on your windage/elevation turrets too much, or do a lot of math and calculations. However, as Rex states in the video, a BDC is really optimal inside a 1000-yards. After that, you are going to want a more-precise set-up because there are so many more variables in play once you reach that distance or farther.
Hey i think i have a video idea that would get you alot of views and help us alot and that video is a long range build of the mossber patriot in 308, i know you usally like to use savage and alot of more expensive rifles but it would really help me and many more people out if you did a long range build for the mossberg patriot 308. Thank you and hoping to see a video on those lines👍🏻
Does it look like the left handed bolt model will clear the illumination knob on the PA 4-14x scope???
I have the 20” version of this rifle. When shooting it, the enlarged bolt knob scrapes skin away at the back of my trigger finger between the two most medial knuckles. Is anyone else having this happen, or what am I doing wrong while shooting? I don’t have this issue with any other rifles of mine.
Pretty cool for the average lazy "sharpshooter"! Buy this Savage .308 and this whizbang reticle clean the greazy screws and loctite the rail and go ring steel out to 800yds! This is what every farmer, cowboy and weekend warrior should buy, and go protect their homestead with, when the aliens invade!
