How to change rear shock absorber on VW PASSAT 5 (B5) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

You don't need the sockets for the nut on the end of the shock. A crescent wrench and a 16 or a 17 mm (depending on the old and new replacement) wrench works fine. I just completed this on my own B5.

Yeah or just a ratcheting combo wrench and holding the top shaft with locking pliers (vise grips). On the old one I just remove the nut with an impact driver, I don't suggest installing the nut on the new one that way it could ruin the seal on the compression rod if it spins it.
