The first time I played this, the combination of my faction ability and the techs acquired in the first few rounds created an engine that sent me down an unexpected - and, I had assumed, doomed - path of area control through which I won handily, with only the four Lv1 techs, two or maybe three Lev2 techs, and a synergistic combination of achievement cards that I was able to dominate. My initial takeaway was exactly the opposite of yours - that the area control portion was hugely important, and the tech tree was a thing on the side. Since then every game has been different, and no one single strategy has been dominant. As much as I've enjoyed it though, I never find myself requesting it.
actually, the pawn can stay on the same action in Basic spacefaring, but it must move to an open hex spot on the board. so if all 4 spots are currently occupied for the Research level 1 for example, then you couldn't do it again, but it 3 out of 4 spots were occupied, you are allowed to move to the 4th spot and do research level 1 again.
Tech Tree The Drinking Game: 1. Take a sip every time Alex says "tech". 2. Long sip every time Alex says "tech tree the board game". 3. Call ambulance.
Currently my number 3 game and I could see it moving to number 2. I love the balance between the tech tree and area control. It's wonderfully balanced and you can't ignore either and expect to win. So easy to get to the table and teach too and a really intriguing puzzle based around a fairly simple ruleset.
I agree that the game feels slightly limited, with only two modules to manage (tech tree and area control), but that is not necessarily bad for a retail game. Compared to crowdfunded games that give you a whole lot of content to entice you to back them (and the additional content leaving much to be desired in some instances, if not always), retail games have the space and time to slowly build upon the foundations set by the core game through the introduction of expansions at a later date that, most of the time, improve the gaming experience.
FYI, Cthulhu Wars appears twice on your review board. Once in the "Left" column and once in the "Kept with No Review" column. Of course I'm assuming it left for good but just a FYI. Well while I'm at it you might want to remove the duplicate Horrified (Left and Left with No review).
One other thing people might not like. There is a lot of text in this game and reading. I noticed some people are not a huge fan of that. But for me it's one of my favorites.

There is an expansion coming soon that will address everything you don’t like about the game.
