  • One of the compositions that TM Krishna performed at his concert at Kala Mandir in Kolkata was "Jambu Pathe Mam Pahi" in Ragam Yamuna Kalyani, a supremely beautiful Muthuswamy Dikshitar kriti, pertaining to one of the five elements, in this case water.
    Krishna was accompanied by Akkarai Subhalakshmi on violin, Arunprakash Krishnan on mridangam and Chandrasekara Sharma on ghatam. Tanpura support was provided by Krishna's student Vignesh Krishnamurthy and Ritwik Pal.
    This concert was the finalé to Experimenter Gallery's 10th Anniversary celebrations and was curated and co-produced by First Edition Arts.

    I have always found such a stand out seperation in TMKs performance of krithis. He is really trying to explore the depths of the subliminal nature of the composition and its place within the raga through his own vulnerable and exploratory nature. Truly moved to tears in certain parts of this rendition.

    This rendition brings out all the bhakti and emotions of the song that would make Dikshitar proud. TMK clearly has put all that he has got in every note, pushing himself to the limits emotionally and physically which moves and directly touches the audience. The "gap" was him collecting his energies, thoughts, emotions before unleashing it again musically. I was waiting in anticipation and bated breath, as did he co-artistes on stage who were also clearly moved as well. While the "gap" may be unorthodox, the comments on its inappropriateness is profoundly misplaced.

Otherwise refrain from generslly grabing the mic because it is accessible. There are too many voices in this world that are not expressed, not all the expressed voices are meaningful. I agree that there is a failed experiment or two (maybe the almost-nerival and whatever tadarananana he does at anirvachaneeya nada bindo to disturb the flow of the kriti) in this rendition, and there is definitely a lapse of musical judgement. There is, however, nothing preposterous about him having giving it a go. The rest of the composition- it felt beautiful. The sensitivity of TMK's accompanying artists-- especially, Vid. Akkarai Shubhalakshmi and Vid. Arun Prakash-- makes this rendition touching.
    Those comparing this rendition to those of Vid. DK Jayaraman and the other musicians who refer Vid. DKJ's notations must be mindful of differences the same composition can embody across baaNis. Here, in particular, we should be mindful of TMKs adherence to the SSP when it comes to Deekshitharu's kritis (which is probably as close to the original composition as it can get).

      A respectable opinion worded elegantly 🙏. I, for one, found this rendition to be resoundingly majestic and extremely memorable. The reason for this reply to you is about the point you make about 'Anirvachaniya Nada Bindo'. I think that part is one of the highlights of this performance and many other fellow viewers have appreciated it. It is quite beautiful in its own way. Krishna's personal and unorthodox touches are one of the things that make him a unique artist. It reminds me of Pandit Kumar Gandharva of the Hindustani tradition who was also known for similar experimentalism. I am not comparing them at all of course, please do not misunderstand 🙏. Finally about the 'almost neraval' comment, as per my observation, Ragam Yamuna Kalyani is almost always sung in such a manner. It is sung with mostly sangati based expansion. Very rarely you see a full fledged Neraval and Kalpanaswarams in this Ragam. It would have been a treat if Krishna had done that but it's fine enough. I think the best way to describe T. M. Krishna and his music is 'quite odd but hauntingly beautiful'.

    • @AnoopKashyap
      @AnoopKashyap 4 роки тому +3

      I don't think one is 'technically superior' over the other. Each artist makes an aesthetic choice on how they sing, few sing it slowly, many sing in madhyamakala. It's completely fine if you like one over the other.
      Also if you listen to what TMK says about art 'reaching the masses', he says it's only the duty of the artist to take his/her music to the masses, the masses may completely reject the music and that is okay as well.

    • @sixthsense66able

      @@sreekrishnasaikolipaka7020 I think the beauty of TMK's music is that without going into ANY technicality, without knowing anything about any raaga, his music is mesmerizing. You don't have to share with your friends if you don't appreciate it. I feel sorry for your friends. His idea was not to take music to the masses, per se, I would say, but to break a monopoly that exists in this field, and expose it to the masses. Whether or not they like it should NOT be any artist's concern. To his eternal credit, TMK went beyond that concern and we listeners have benefited immensely. I agree with Shreyas K, though I lack his expert knowledge. Once TMK has transformed a composition, difficult for others to match it, to my ears and emotions.

    Mr.TM Krishna can explore the Raga to his heart's content but certainly this style of concert does not evoke devotion in the listener as it is originally meant to.These compositions are divinely inspired. Accomplished carnatic singers like Krishna must remember to pay homage to the composer which is very sadly missing in his style of concerts.
