I'm a fan of Boston Dynamics's robots, but seeing how the Chinese government is using them to force residents to stay starving inside their apartments during the Shanghai 2022 lockdown is a sad reminder that these robots will mostly be used by governments and companies for evil purposes. But any way good joke.

What they are releasing though is me being in my safe space and creative space with something that I love and being passionate about sharing it with others. Q: How would you get into robotics if you're in the life sciences?
Most of my career has been in labs and clinical environments, which seems pretty separate from the more hard engineering of places like these.
Being brutally honest, it would be difficult, more than likely you'd have to go back to school and get one of the following: Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, an ECET related diploma, or a Bachelor of Mechatronics.
Your experience would come in handy for sure as I'm sure it's taught you problem solving and good analytical skills, but you're right, that field is quite far removed.
If you're really interested you could try to teach yourself basic digital electronics and become familiar with embedded programming on resource limited platforms like microcontrollers. There's a bunch of free courses online, you could start with something super simple like an Arduino and graduate yourself to more industry standard controllers like PICs or TI based ones. Once you have a basic understanding of digital electronics and embedded systems you could start looking into more exclusively robotics based subjects like motion and path profiling, again, lots of free courses online that usually have a name like "Robotic Applications" or something along those lines.

Hey man,
Depends on what he's interested in, personally I find learning pure programming without some sort of application a little boring, but he might not be the same.
I think embedded programming is a little bit more fun because you get to see directly how the hardware in a device interacts with the software- so I can give you advice there.
Look around for some simple projects you and your son both might be interested and start from there. For example, you could create a timed LED strip that flashes some sort of colored pattern.
For a beginner microcontroller I would recommend an Arduino which can be a good platform for learning C or C++. A cheaper alternative is a buying a Ti microcontroller and using "Energia" which is basically an Arduino port. Alternatively you could get something like a raspberry pi which is actually a mini computer, but you still have access to GPIO ports to interact with external peripherals like LEDs, temperature sensors, accelerometers, etc... On a pi you can also write your code in Python instead of C or C++ which might be a bit more beginner friendly.
This might sound a little like gibberish but Google "beginner Arduino projects" or "beginner raspberry pi projects" and try to find something you and your son will both be interested in making together.

I'm interested in the fact that you got into the field without a college degree. Any time I ask about this field people make it seem entirely impossible to enter if you don't have a cs, electrical or mechanical engineering degree.
@@SpecialSalads actually I'm an electrical engineer that's my proper title, I just didn't update linked in because I barely use it. I started as a technician 15 years ago and have been on the engineering design team for about 4 years now! Totally can be done, and I'd say it would be faster if you had a degree, it sure took me a really long time to work up to engineer but I loved being a technician too!!
Yeah for me I got a head start by going to a technical high school, where I graduated with multiple industry certifications in computer repair which very much applied to my first technician dog working on littleDog at BD! In high school I even learned Solidworks. I was a technician for about 11 years, started as a very basic junior tech then worked my way up. I've been on the engineering design team for about 3-4 years now. The biggest thing is doing projects on the side/your own time that prove your real life skills, since even having a degree doesn't guarantee you have hands on real world experience.
@currupt I wanted to add another important thing... for me I was lucky enough to get in on the ground floor at BD, before we were famous... And take on a very basic role. I would say if you want to go to the no degree route that's probably important, it's hard to get in the door at high profile places until you've got a good resume and title... Working your way up in a company is the route I and others without degrees at my company went. There are maybe 3 of us at the moment in the engineering side without degrees out of 400, so it's not common but not impossible (we've all got 10+ years of professional experience tho too starting as technicians)
@@cassiemckay Thanks very much for the in-depth response! I've been following BD since their first upload on youtube, I've always thought the stuff you present is super cool. I really like working with electronic and mechanical systems, it's very satisfying to fix something. College never seemed like the right fit for me, so I assumed I just couldn't ever get into robotics. It's cool to see someone who is a real example to the contrary. Thanks again for answering my question.
@@cassiemckay woah you really grinded fot that long, that's difficult. I didn't think companies did that anymore nowadays. they seem to want people to get all the degrees first instead of letting people learn on the job, even in more practical fields like engineering :/

I've been following Boston Dynamics robotics since 2004 or so, what you have done in that time is truly amazing. And I'm really enjoying these latest videos where you're focusing on the behind-the-scenes and the engineers that are in R&D.
An idea for a future video would be to have them show you around their workspaces and the tools/programs they use.
Question: Do you track animal movement and transfer parts of it to the robots or is it a pure calculations + trial and error type developement ?

@@jonathanarreola5279 I think they haven't implemented neural networks in any area of the Spot robots just yet. The arm extension, however, might be using computer vision.
I don't know for sure, but I guess a part of both. It looks quite obvious that the walking cycle is inspired by animals that is mimicked into spot by calculations and trail and error. I guess they use a pre determine motion cycle for normal circumstances with a on-board processing system to adjust for more complex surfaces like a inclination or stairs.
the way its done is that they look at the layout of the animal (here they used a dog) and set up the joints more or less like the animal then its pretty simple the have the neural network in the robot calculate the angles and movement speed with input from a gyroscope making it hard to actually say whats being figured out by the AI through learning and what is being calculated from input by the gyro and other sensors :D
So if an ordinary person purchased a Spot, what could they realistically do with them if they had no knowledge of coding? In the future are you planning on giving it some sort of AI so it can take verbal commands from people who aren’t tech savvy?
Since it can be programmed voice recognition is one of possible programs it could run
I imagine quite a lot since, like they showed it can be controlled remotely by a controller.
I would assume they're not planning on adding baked-in AI beyond safety measures/basic object recognition and mapping. But it has an API, which means the onus is on a developer to create whatever AI they want for it, and release the software for others to use.
You're basically asking if you can drive a car with no engine.
Spot needs a program to run. A car can't run without an engine. You can make your program take verbal commands and do something, but only if you program that in.
If I had to guess they would set something up so oof you wanted spot to follow a specific path it would be a setting then just have him walk the path with the controller then it re follows that path.
I wanted to be in robotics when I was younger, but it was the 80s, robotech and transformers was my dream!

Computer engineering major here, taking a class on robotics where we each build/assemble an autonomous robot with SLAM on ROS seems like a really fun field to work on tho I don’t know how I would find a place to work at compared to general embedded systems where there are much more jobs available I may just keep it as a hobby though

Q: How might you program multiple Spots to work together for large tasks (say, picking up an object from two ends, or using one Spot to help the other to cross a gap)? How well could they coordinate?

I'm thinking, when Spot (as robot dog) will be used in space (stationary orbit of planet, of flying through deep space) where is no strong gravity vectors (like on surface in pointing down to the core of the planet), you guys should attach flexible tail (think here as cats do their acrobatic things in their lives - walking on top side of the door, or if drop them upside down, their rotate their body to land on their 4 palms).
I hope it clear enough, and helps out more for the future R&D projects.
My biggest question is how is spot manufactured? Now that you have a commercial product, how are you seeing to the development and scaling of its continued production? Is spot built by other robots? Is he hand assembled everytime? Are you finding ways to significantly speed up spot production?

Mam, I am very much interested in robotics, I love this career a lot.. I too want to pursue in a field of robotics....but the problem is I want to know how to pursue....I from India and took cs with science stream as my +2(now I am in 12th) but when I come to next step I don't know what to take, coz ppl say u cn take cs(has more hope) and cs is on demand as my btech and later go to robotics...but iam not much interested in programming though iam good in it..I want to be I the electrical mechanical post of robotics where we actually build one....can you suggest me what to do...take btech as cs or electronic and communication or electrical and electronics as undergraduate....kindly do help...
