In 1988/89, i took lessons from Joe when he taught at Cambridge music in Porter Square. I was about 17, very much into stuff like Racer X, but had never ever seen someone do that style in person. I'll tell you, he was just as good then, as he is here. He had a bit more of a Gary Moore vibe then, but man could he play the guitar. He had EVERYTHING down, just an extremely gifted & hard working dude. Joe was also very laid back & nice. Back then he had a BC Rich Gunslinger & an awesome yellow ESP strat. He let me play the ESP & BC Rich, like it was no big deal (here, take my guitar!)
I'm a Berklee student and I had Joe in my second semester. He really is an incredible player. He's still into Gary Moore (and Yngwie, of course), but he taught me a lot of Blackmore stuff. Very nice guy, too. Only Berklee Private Instructor I know of that lets you play with dirty distortion during a lesson.
Absolute shred master. My dad (lead guitarist in local bands for over 30 years) saw him live and he said it was an absolute spectacle. "I couldn't believe my eyes." He said.
Wow it's amazing how many put this down. I would almost sell my soul to play like this, and you guys (that probably just picked up the guitar and discovered Yngwie) have a long way to go. Joe Stump isn't just some guy that picked up the guitar and said i'm going to copy Malmsteen. He is a professor and a true neo-classical guitarist.
haha wouldnt it be awesome if you could just pick up a guitar and be like " im just gonna copy yngwie" ? i sure wish i could do that. people who put this down have yet to realise how hard it is to play like that. years of dedication and practice, training your ears your fingers, it takes time, time most people arent willing to invest in stuff they would classify as important to them. just enjoy this good man doing his thing, its amazing.
Yngwie this and Yngwie that. This is Joe Stump, a flat out talented guitarist. His shows are outstanding. Go check out Black Knight's Castle. Joe is a master! I saw him a few weeks ago and am headed to BKC this weekend to see him again. Rock on, Joe!
Joe actually began to play like this after hearing Uli Jon Roth in the 70's, pre-Yngwie. Yngwie also credits Uli with inspiring his own playing. We are all inspired by someone.
I just rediscovered Neo classical metal and I love it. Cascading Arpeggio and speed riffing are not dead. It’s not noise, it’s heavenly. When I see young players like Max Ostro showing up and playing Yng effortlessly at an early age. Bravo is all I can say.
Joe rules, I studied under him for a minute. A great teacher who was always kind and realistic, despite his own really amazing talents. I'm in a band now that plays large venues and tours regularly (i've toured all over the US and Europe), but I owe a lot to this guy and his enthusiasm, his technique, and his overall willingness to pretty much say, "hey anyone can shred if they work hard enough."
Just listen to Where No men dare shred, the Dominance factor, Je t'aime, lost soul, the dark gift, Pharaoh's delight and of course End of an Era which is for me his most amazing masterpiece, just to name a few, there's no rock guitar player who has ever created songs as good as these ones, unbeatable! absolutely the best! He outperformed other players such as Ynwie a long time ago, he has his own style and even some thrash influence which I like a lot. JOE you are my favorite guitar player!!!!!
Thanx for this wonderful upload... I love Joe,he is a GREAT musician/player...and wonderful person... Met him in person in Holland 2 years ago..a great guy.. All my best to you Joe,rock on bro.. JimiBax68
Being listening to both Malmsteen and Joe Stump for years, yes, he does play a lot like yngwie- but he doesn't sound the same- still has his own identity and some of his early stuff is really amazing and melodic,,
Kills me, all these comparisons to Yngwie.. It's called the Harmonic Minor scale, it's called Neo-Classical, it's called studying the Masters of Classical music, Joe is great and he's one of the finest Neo-Classical musicians out there.. I bought all of his CDs and they're grand.. I very much like Yngwie Malmsteen as he crushed me with first solo album, it had an incredible impact on all who'd play the genre.. Yngwie isn't Joe and Joe isn't Yngwie and I'm so glad because I can listen to more Harmonic Minor compositions, the "Thinking Mans" scale.. I'd take this genre over any other music, Neo-Classical Melodic Fusion Shred RULZ!!! Regardless of who is playing and with no comparisons as who's better, it's about the music.. Neo-Classical MUSIC!!!
+TheShredfester I agree with what you say... but the reality is Yngwie wrote the book for this kind of playing. He took things to a new level. He is Joe Stump's main influence. I love Joe Stump, he's a great player and a great person. The neo-classical genre is my favorite too. If you get a chance checkout George Bellas, Kelly Simonz, and Katsu Ohta they're brilliant players. Cheers
+epic103 Got all of George Bellas' CDs and his guitar study course, he's a very sophisticated player and his compositions are futuristic and at the same time well rooted in the classical time period as well.. I certainly enjoy his playing and his tone is wicked.. I'm down with all the players you've mentioned, Kelly and Katsu are stellar.. The Japanese understand great musicianship and the beauty of incendiary fretboard wizardry melodic fusion shred!!! They get "it"!!! Yokozeki, Shima, Marco Ferrigno and Vinnie Moore, Chris Impellitteri, the Neo-Classical isn't leaving anytime soon.. Takayoshi Ohmura is a samurai as well..
I have been reading all of the comments and I have to say yours cut to the chase, yes you can see he loves to play guitar and that deserves respect.,I have heard him play stuff that sounds nothing like Yngwie and it was quite brilliant
He sounds better on crappy equipment than most guitarists on a $10,000 rig. It just goes to show that guitar lessons are a better investment than high end gear until you get to where your playing deserves the expensive stuff.
This guy was my teacher one semester at Berklee. I was super into John McLaughlin and was hoping to get tips on picking technique. I remember he would start the metronome, and then start picking patterns that were completely irrelevant to what the metronome was doing. One time I busted out a little Sixteenth Century Greensleeves, and he asked me to show him how to play it. Good times.
man, this guy plays Yngwie stuff better than Yngwie does haha I've noticed a lot of people getting upset because people compare him to Yngwie but how can you not? their bends, scale choices, phrasing, everything is so similar. I will say that Joe's technique seems to be a good bit better. I would also bet that Joe is faster as well. Not super crazy about all his music but I am learning from it and he's a super nice guy. I've exchanged a few emails with him. Very down to earth and cool person. I found out we have the same picking technique where the movement is based only in the thumb and index finger, no wrist movement for the speedy shred runs.

just curious to know, did you have to pay higher rates to learn from him?

Very nice guy, too. Only Berklee Private Instructor I know of that lets you play with dirty distortion during a lesson.
Joe's a great guy. I'm taking lessons from him at Berklee right now. He's a great teacher on top of being a world class player.
I had classes from him at a Berklee summer program and he is amazing he makes everything look so easy.
Absolute shred master. My dad (lead guitarist in local bands for over 30 years) saw him live and he said it was an absolute spectacle. "I couldn't believe my eyes." He said.
I love Joe Stump. He's like all the good parts of Yngwie and none of the bad.
I like ynwie too but you are for sure correct. I like joes playing better . I bet he just had a shitty agent who was always drunk and coked outb
I think he likes donuts too.
Yeah, he probably likes donuts, unlike Yngwie
@@poopityscoopity2042 donuts suck. so does dimebag
If it wasn't for yngwie mate.
Amazing technique and command of the instrument. Very inspiring player and seems like a great guy also. Keep rocking Joe.
Who cares who influenced him, the man can play! Cheers from Texas!
I like how at the end he asks, "How was that? Was that good?"
Umm, Hell yeah Joe! That was friggin' AWESOME!
Congratulations. You're a sheep.
WildBillJP Congratulations, you're a punk ass little bitch.
What are you on about mate? Joe is a world class player, just because somebody enjoys their playing...makes them a sheep? Gtfoh
He just played 8,774,859,345,00.6 notes.I counted every one.
How?
David Heller Protip: He lied.
Jajajaja
Joe is amazing, to say the least! He is one of the most fiery, passionate guitar players with runs that send shivers up one's spine!
Total BEAST MODE! WOW! So awesome.
Very inspired 😃😃😃 I love joe's neoclassical shreds

Damn, he makes it look easy.
I counted , he played a million notes in this song.

Never bored hear him...so much talented player 👍🎸
No doubting his talent. I like his playing a lot, just as I also like Yngwie's. I don't see why someone can't be a fan of BOTH.
Joe keep doing what your doing and the world will be a better place to live in
Thanx Joe✌️
Fa king incredible!
I'm 74 and still practicing this stuff...!!! 😱😂
Shred til you're dead...😇🙏💓
I cant even understand how I mist this guy. my new best, all his albums are perfection. just wowwww
I watched Joe play live at the bar in Indiana a few years ago. He was fantastic, flawless and fast.
One of the greatest neo classical guitarist ever.
3:15 thru 3:20! Five seconds proves he's not from this world! Absolutely love watching him play
😢
Met him several times. Super guy, very humble
Inspirational performance, fantastic playing!
Killer playing One of the Best
Flawless as usual!
This talent is just other worldly.
His economy picking is so unbelievably tight. I'd kill to be able to be that accurate.
23 thumbs down???? Come on, one can NOT deny his talent. Rock on Joe!!!

Great Guy!! Great Player!!

AWESOME
The song is called 'Bullet Train'. Thanks for the comments! Joe is AMAZING and an incredibly cool and nice guy!
The most bestest player ever
the most bestest comment ever
Браво, СТАМПИЩЕ!!!!!
there is nothing worse than the comments sections on musicians. the snobbery is far too real.
He sucks
+Jimmy Landa that's an understatement
Yeah, too many "experts" from idiots who are probably envious of his playing, so they feel the need to pick him apart
@@landajimmy lol...

awesome!
I had lessons with this guy, great instructor.
Bad ass! Thank you. I like looking at picking hand. I am learning your guitar book.

well its cool. i like them both!!!

Monster Player!!
YJM is my icon and legend, but Joe Stump is a beast!
He did the same for me, he is the best guitar player and I love his music.
lol what's funny is that at the end he says how was that?... FUCKING AWESOME THAT'S WHAT IT WAS!

Luv the way you tremolo WITHOUT touching your whammy bar!
wow, Joe is an amazing player, his style is very aggressive , i totally dig it.

Of course he will ask you that, he's a big blackmore geek 😂 some of his song convinces me that he holds Blackmore more than Yngwie tbh
Just because one person creates a style doesn't mean someone else can't play it much, Much better. Perfect example right here. Rock on Maestro Joe!
Nice ❤️🎹🎶😊👍
Holy feck. My mind has just been blown into bits.
+Mini Forklift Ⓥ holy feck ?heehehe
That look of pure bliss on his face while he shreds, reminds me of Dick Dale's performances :D

He sure is! Thanks for the comment!

Fucking beautiful.
One hell of a nice guy rock on
He's the best! 😀😀
@jfutach YES! Joe Stump is freaking great. Such tasteful and melodic chops. I can hear a little bit of Paul Gilbert in his playing style, too.
Pretty quick fingers there, might give Paul Gilbert a run for his money
grandiosa tecnica
Just out of the camera's eye... there is a guy on each side with a fire extinguisher just in case the guitar's neck catches on fire!
Same! ;)
This is some epic shit
