    Can the Watch Snob be made into a recurring character - the hat is perfect! Also, as everyone knows, Citizen automatics are the only good watches! ;) In all seriousness though - I think you nailed the argument...people who look down on someone's watch choice are likely compensating for deep emptiness in their own lives.

    Just now watching this, I'm not going to lie the watch snobs wouldn't like talking to me. My current favorite watch is my NH35A build that is a total clone of a Seiko Presage that is beyond my financial reach right now. $110 for all the parts vs $350 for "the real deal", to the snob both of those watches are probably beneath them. I really like it though because It's built to match my custom Vans. The snobs also probably wouldn't like me because in the words of the late, great James Brown "Papa don't take no mess"

    I just bought a watch not even a watch snob can hate: A Casio F-91W! 🤘🤣
    My strange odds'n'ends pile of watches can't be considered a "Collection" of any sort, stretching from a €50 Chinese Rolex Submariner look-a-like (not a pirate) to a 1970 Omega Seamaster 200. I like watches, but I'm not "In" and never will.

    Automatic/mechanical watches are fascinating from a tooling perspective, but my most expensive watch is a Casio AE-1200 that I bought a $180 stainless steel case/bracelet and sapphire crystal mod kit for. 😂 $180 ephemera enclosing a $5 movement.

    It’s been a while Matt, I hope all is well with you. I’m definitely not a watch snob, I don’t care what watches you have or wear. I will ask about someone’s watch if it looks interesting to me. I don’t have any high end watches just a mixture of quartz and mechanical, my most worn watches these days are two I have put together myself from eBay parts.

    The snobs hate me becasue I don't have a lot of Rolexes and say my collection is just shit! I have a new gold Breguet Marine, a Panerai Radomir blue dial, a Panerai Submersible navy seal watch, a 2016 Rolex Sea Dweller 4000, an old 2000 year 2 tone Rolex oyster perpetual with blue dial, a new 43mm IWC pilot's watch with their in house movement and a Longines Heritage 1945 and a Norqain Adventure sport as my beater as well as 1 G shock and a quartz tiffany dial Tissot PRX and a Grand Seiko Quartz as well. I buy what I want. Waiting on a 41mm 2 tone sub bluesy but still get my balls busted! I should just sell my Porsche and jump on the Patek and AP bandwagon too next! I am not worthy.

    I own quartz and mechanical watches as well. Both has their own positive and negative traits. Mechanical watches is not for everyone forsure. I have bought a beautiful nos vintage mechanical Doxa watch to my Father’s 65th birthday with the original suede display box and everything and he went into the shower with it on the first week. The watch is not water resistant obviously because it’s from the early 60s. The watch luckily survived it but I wasn’t happy about it at all because I have really put everything into it to find a nice but for me a still affordable piece to surprise him with a nice watch once in life. Although there are water resistant mechanical watches but I thought this will be more suitable for him, but it turned out it’s not. I love my quartz watches because of their accuracy and minimal maintenance requirements. Yes, i do have casio g shocks as well and somehow the dw5600 square is what I’m wearing the most since i got it. Maybe because it was my childhood dream watch back in the 80’s and did not have one at that time. I also have a solar Seiko pilot chronograph which I have stopped wearing daily but not because i don’t like it, it’s because i want to preserve the shape of the watch. I have a lot of good memories what is linking to this watch. I have 3 mechanical watches 2 of them are more than a 100 years old pocketwatches converted to wristwatches. One is an Omega and the other is a Systeme Glashütte. Both has original porcelain dials wich are up to 95% in shape and has a savonette movements. I love their loud ticking sound and their beauty. Sometimes i just taking them out from the box and just taking pleasure of them long minutes. The 3rd mechanical watch is a vintage Roamer dress watch from the late 40’s it has completely refurbished inside and outside looks almost like new. It has a manual unitas movement and it’s surprisingly accurate. I would like to know what do you think about marrige watches as a watchmaker. I think they are great and beautiful especially if they have all the original dials and hands like mine has. What i have experienced is swiss quartz movement are ain’t worth to buy because their quality is not the best. I had a Tissot chronograph sport watch and after 4 years it has stopped switching the date complication. The service told it needs a complete movement change what it would take 9 weeks and over $200. That was 2/3 of the retail price of the watch so i gave it away and got a Citizen ecodrive chronograph what is served me well everyday for 7 years.

      That was a great read, thanks for sharing. I do have some similar issues with some of mine where I don't wear them because I worry about damaging/scratching etc.
      Regarding your marriage question its straightforward for me as I'm more new school. A big no no. I prefer complete originality. However I do know that the old way of watchmaking is all about functionality. Marriage watches fall under 2 conditions. Either blatant manipulation to run up a price of a piece or a more similar case of making a time piece do it's job and work! and work by any means. As times have changed I do believe that originality has also taken the lead in how things are expected nowadays.

    • @NZotyoka81
      @NZotyoka81 10 місяців тому +1

      @@HorologyBiology Thank you for taking time on me and answering onto my question. I know marriage watches are pretty much dividing the watch community, but i do see the beauty of this genre. Naturally I prefer the originality too so mines are totally unmodified except the cases. I have never interested of thoes pieces what has aftermarket dials. I also hate to see some people or companies carving and chiseling the old 100 years old movement in order to creating something unique. That’s what i call butchering. Giving a new case to a pocket watch without any modification is giving a new life to these pieces what would otherwise just rotting in a dark drawer somewhere which is a bigger loss in my humble opinion. A lot of them has lost their cases during WW2 especially here in Hungary and around this part of Europe. People had to use their silver and gold watch cases as a currency to buying food. So many of them ended up in a dark drawer or a dusty attic because of that. I took mines to an old watchmaker and he told me that is more possible both of them had silver or gold cases. The Omega is not really special piece but not common either because it has a savonette movement as I mentioned earlier. The Systeme Glashütte is my special piece because it has a very beautiful movement with a swan neck shape adjustment part which i don’t see on too many. Wish i could show you some pictures about it. Anyway, i love them and i will keeping them on that shape. My marrige watch grail is a Le Phare minute repeater chronograph complication. It has to most beautiful and breathtaking movement and sound what i have ever seen. Sadly their prices are skyrocketing now. Thank you for taking time on me again.
      Have a beautiful day!

    Pissing off watch snobs is like 90% of the reason I even post on social media anymore.
    In my opinion people should buy and wear whatever watches they get they most joy from. I don't care if its a digital watch from walmart, a cheap automatic from china, a repo/clone, a seiko mod, an homage, a genuine lux brand, or a piece unique from Patek Philippe, if it makes you happy I'm happy for you.
    Though I will say the rich douches who use their watches to 'flex' on less fortunate are horrible people that that's why I love to rile them up so much.

    I only buy watches for my personal taste, and it's getting a bit wacky :D, I'm really getting into vintage watches.
    I have casios, pagani sub copy 9and to be honestt I love it!) a few quartz fakes from china that wouldn't fool a blind man....... but I like them,.... a nice vintage 1960's oris, but my buying habbits are more a case of what I can afford rather than what I would love to own.
    A Rolex?... sure I'd have one if I had the money to waste on a watch, I'd buy a few others before that though.
    But even If money was no object I just don't get blinged out watches covered in diamonds etc .....richard mille honesly looks worse than a "looky loooky"! booby G from a beach vender in spain. and don'tt get me started on such things as Jacob and co................ Utterly silly things although the calugular has its charms:D ), but who in ther right mind would spend 1m+ on a watch?
    Would I class myself as a watch snob? maybe I do cringe a bit at fashion brands sush as amarni love others like cartier).
    I think in my case it's not snobery but rather tthe fact I work for a living and after bills etc I'm not stupid with money.

    I find the cheap watch snob thing to be kind of hilarious, as it spawned out of UA-camrs trying to make a buck with affiliate sales from aliexpress and the like. Then it became a bit of a movement. In reality, who cares about any of this - wear what you want to wear and don't pay attention to those who want to bring you down.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  9 місяців тому

      You said it right! It is hilarious for sure, I can think of a few UA-camrs (no names) that blatantly fall under this category where they are doing all they can to cash in on the constant Ali express companies throwing their watches at them for free to push push push.

    Not just watches but also horological tool snobbery is just as bad, just because the guy isn’t showing off a £500 set of screwdrivers he can’t do a professional service! The whole horological spectrum is stuffed with snobbery imo.

    I have no interest in any Rolex models because of the following: they look utterly dated, all but one come only on a bracelet for which I have a general dislike of ( I am a strap guy ) and they are all polished. I like my watches brushed or blasted. So I am more in a Breitling camp when it comes to luxury watch brands
