Many years ago in 1991 I was laid off from a full time job and on that following day it had rained so I felt the need to preoccupy myself by doing something constructive. I pieced together an original Enterprise model kit I had had that was about 12 inches in length and completed it that same day sitting in my parents garage focusing with all my efforts into building it, painting it and decaling it. It felt good at the time to not only distract myself by thinking about what had happened but it was a feeling of accomplishment, a kind of a therapy that seemed to have helped me at the time. And I still have that model to this day as a memento.
Thank you, Chris. You wrote a classic response and a helpful explanation, glad I was not the only one going through plastic therapy. One other detail I left out was that my Mom was grilling me as to why was I messing around building a toy when I should be looking for a job.@@ChrisGurin
This brings back great memories of when I was a young teen in the 1990s building my AMT and ERTL Star Trek models. I built 1701 through 1701-E, Romulan ship, Klingon Bird of Prey, the Reliant, Excelsior, as well as the Millenium Falcon. The 1990s were great times for this hobby.
Was skimming through BSG and Trek modelling videos, stumbled onto yours. Watched the whole hour. Your way of working and (calm, quiet and rare) commenting and close up sound recording is just perfect for a relaxing afternoon. And unlike a lot of modellers, you talked about where you saw some of your skills lacking still. Very honest.
Thanks for showing your build of this kit, all those wallpaper decals are amazing. My father had a few different releases of this kit stored in his basement with dreams of building all the enterprises in one scale. He never got around to it, but I may build them. But right now, I am going to build, or finishing to build, a vintage 1/650 scale AMT long box kit my father started 50 years ago and never completed. My dad died of Covid-19 last month and after finding this kit in his basement I decided to finish it as a way to retroactively build the kit "with" my dad. I started a vlog here on youtube that will document the project and would welcome whatever insight or advice you might have about building it. Thank you.
Your patience is admirable. I recall painting all the Aztec detail on my 1/1400 "D" in the early 90ies before TNG even aired here in Germany. Your video gives me hope that large(r) decals can be done. And yes, the fine black marker for the windows was a thing even back then. 🖖☺️ Edit: Fixed spelling.
You must have the hands of a surgeon and the patience of a saint. I used to build models and I would get so frustrated especially with some of those AMT kits. Brush painting was always kind of my weakness too but I thought you did a really good job on those ships given what you had to work with.
I haven't tried applying decals since I was single digits... In my teens I didn't bother because of the pain they were when i was younger... 43 yr old me is looking at these and seriously thinking painting would be easier.
I really liked working on my AMT 1: 1400 Enterprise E. Drilled every window added LED lights and cut out pieces for the blue and red warp pylons. Was a ton of work, but the result is great.
I remember when I was a Teenager I made the Star Trek Ship set that included the U.S.S. Enterprise, the Romulan Warbird and the Klingon Battle Cruiser. The second scale model I ever made was as a younger boy in the 60's. It was the AMT/ERTL U.S.S. Enterprise. It even had a rather simple light kit for the Primary Hull sensor domes and the Warp Engine Nacelles. My First scale model was the Lost In Space Cyclops holding the big boulder over the Robinson family. ( No Chariot ).
I may have said this before but thanks for giving the colour call outs and manufacturers details. So many kits and UA-cam build reviews just say "grey" or "white" etc and others use a complex mix of their own invention. My biggest problem in finishing Trek kits has been the painting as i want my ships to look part of the same fleet. Using bespoke mixes means when it comes to touch up work i can never get the colours to match and so having a standardised straight from the bottle colour recommendation really helps.
AHA! I figured out the discrepancy with the 1701 Refit decals! The numbers actually match up with the decals for NCC-1701-A that is packaged with the kit AMT-660 (1701; 1701-A; 1701-B) ... Funny because the decals and the mold are quite different actually. I've got both kits and am hoping that doing one will help me figure out the decals on the other! Again great work! Always look forward to your posts!

Very nice post my friend!
The 1701 refit, and 1701-d are my favs in that order...I saw Star Trek the motion picture in the theatres when it came out, and I was in awe at how beautiful she(refit) looked
Thank you for posting! I am building this kit now and it helps to see how others have done things. This is kind of a re release of a kit from the '80s when there were only 3 Enterprises. I have both kits, so some aftermarket decals were bought and made a Mirror universe ship (for TOS) and an Enterprise-A from the duplicate moldings.
Those phaser strips are a pain in the rear. I bought a silver sharpie marker and went over the 'banks of all of my TOS-era craft. SO much easier than trying to hand-paint them on.
I'm a little late to the game since this video was put out 5 years ago, but I picked up this kit a few months ago and I'm really digging the decals. I might scan them in and re-size them to fit the 1/1400 scale ships. These look much nicer than some of the other decal sheets that have come out.
I have all of those in full model size, bought separately. I also have all of the other Star Trek models from Voyager, Deep Space Nine and Space Station K-7 all the way down to the Maquis Valjean, the ST: TMP Vulcan Shuttle and the Enterprise 1701 Bridge
It's 2022 and I just got this kid for Christmas. Thankfully I'm decent at hand painting models because the decals were a nightmare. What I ended up doing was holding the decal nearby while I hand-painted the section in question. Might not be 100% screen accurate, and I still used the registry and livery decals, but the decals won't bubble off and look like cheap stickers in six months. You did a fantastic job, though. I don't know many people who have your patience for large decals.
I don‘t know how often i watched this video, but the models turned out very beautiful. I have learned a lot from you. I bought this set yesterday, so i will surely come back😅.
I had the glue together models of some of these ships the ones I had was the T.O.S. Enterprise, the Refit Enterprise A,the Ambassador Class Enterprise, the Galaxy Class Enterprise and the Sovereign Class Enterprise the only ones I never had were the Excelsior Refit Class Enterprise and the NX-01 but I hope that'll change if I can find those models.
Hi thank you for the video they look amazing i don't think i would be able to do these myself as it looks like you need a steady hand and the detail is amazing. i always had problems in the past when putting the decals on ships they would always break but you make it look so easy and as for painting never could get it right. thank you again for showing this LLAP
Enterprise-A was basically a Constitution Refit, so if it had a Enterprise-A Decal you could just place that on it. I recall getting a TOS Enterprise model a long time ago and the decals came with the 12 Original Constutution Class Starship names and numbers. So if you bought enough of them you could recreate the entire fleet that was never shown in the TOS Series.
I had the set with the TOS and movie ships and the D ship in the 90’s. It was significantly larger than the kit you showed. I had the D ship set up in my bedroom as a kid with the drive section on the stand and the saucer section hanging from the ceiling with strings.
I am actually building this now after watching your video. Been watching it over and over for reference. NX 01, original, refit, and C complete. Working on B D and E. Waiting on some liquid mask to come in that I ordered. My hand painting sucks. But I had the same problems with the C that you did. I have some damage decals from my wrath of Kahn enterprise that I might put on the C to hide some stuff. So far C is my least favorite in this set just because of the problems it gave me. My favorite has been the refit. Saving the D for last because it’s my favorite. Figured I will have a lot of experience when I get to that one. I haven’t built models in 30 years.
ModelChili Scale Models yes sir. I thank you very much. I actually laugh a little bit when I hear you talk about the kit being a pain in the ass because the same thoughts are going through my head as I’m doing it. Lol. Really enjoying your channel brother.
This reminded me that way back in the early '90s I had done a kit of the Enterprise D, that came with the 1701, same scale, as a "sidekick". TNG was on twice a day for YEARS.... but now i can stream it anytime I want, wherever I want, commercial free. It's The Future, each and every day :D Hmmm ... maybe it was the same "3pack" the presenter mentioned. Maybe we all put together the same kit back in the day?
Wow, that’s some pretty amazing work, great job at making them all look so good! I gave up with these sort of kits a while ago, as I’m utterly hopeless with the larger/wrap-around decals.
@@modelchili U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-A was the same ship model as the Refit they just added an A because the one Kirk destroyed was the Refit Enterprise before the refit had different Nacelles and a slightly smaller Saucer section and its Deflector was changed from the dish to more modern deflector
Those decals looked like a PAIN to put on. I was freaking out for you. Funny enough, the one critique I had out of all of the build was that the classic Constitution is missing the darts on the bottom of the saucer section! 😵
They all look beautiful. I built each of the models along with scratch built XCV 330, Cv6, CVN65, and the enterprise space shuttle to go with the enterprise collection.
I have all of them apart from the NX and E. I decided I was going to light them all. I realised I'd made a mistake when the smallest LED and resistor I could find won't fit in the nacelle! So naturally I went out and bought two(!) big scale clear D's and a Revell Voyager to light those up (one kitbashed as a Nebula) to get good at lighting before giving it another go. You did a really good job on all of these!
I just tuned into your channel, amazing work, just awesome. I'm not a model kit fan, but I love Star Trek. Seeing your work and how the set looks great got me thinking about model kits, especially Star 🌟 Trek. Thank you for your great work.
Hello. Nice. I myself had some decal issues during and after applying decals to my AMT SnapIt Enterprise-D model. doesn’t have to be too darn perfect, though. The top part is nearly complete.
I wanted a set of Enterprise models that were to scale but I knew from past experience I couldn't deal with those decals. My solution? Inspired by the display models in the Enterprise D and E conference rooms and the Eaglemoss Gold Series, I painted them gold with red for the warp and impulse engines and silver highlights for things like the nacelle grilles, bridge and sensor domes where appropriate, and the deflector dish. Came out beautifully!
Great work on this video. I have wanted to get this new set for a while now and wasn't too sure about the decals. But seeing your work and the problems you overcame gives me a good idea of what I would be in for. They do look great all together. Very good video!
Thanks! I'm glad you found it useful, when I researched this kit I couldn't find many references to how the decals performed, so sharing that info was one of my goals.
Thanks for posting. Now I have some forewarning about which models are more difficult. I'm terrible with matching paint and such...I regretted buying this model kit the day after I bought it. Oh well, again, thanks for the help, I'll enjoy the little ones.
This decal universe has to be mind warping (pun intended 😂)….your eye hand coordination is extraordinary! Although you describe each problem and result, in the video all the enterprises look fantastic. Great base colors and decal work IMHO. Thank you for a wonderful video and all the tips on this phenomenal kit ! Cheers mate
I bought two of the original set, and built two of the TOS movie versions, one as "1701", the other as "1701-A". I modified the base so the extra ship could be mounted like the others. Good times. They came out nice.
The Enterprise-D looks amazing! The "too-blue" aztecing was the first thing that stuck out to me as well. The pattern on the nacelles is a bit strange as well. Despite all that, the shape and general look are fantastic. Gives a real sense of scale of this behemoth. Really like the additional details you put on like the windows. Though someone left the warp core ejection door open! 😱 You've done a great job on all the models. They start with an excellent amount of detail and you've really accented it perfectly and filled in the gaps. While I get that some of the paint jobs and detailing (e.g. phaser strip and E deflector) are frustrating, they look really good at a normal distance and hold up reasonably well to scrutiny. Really love the work you did here!
Thanks for posting this video. I bought this kit 12 months ago and after watching your video I plucked up the courage to assemble the models and start applying the decals. Unfortunately the top saucer decal for the Enterprise refit shrivelled up after applying it. So it now says NCC-1701Z - oh well.
They may still have the "B" available in the small 3-pc sets with the "A" , so I would definitely recommend trying a smooth "B". I would leave the detailing on the nacelles, however, because it looked much harder to sand without messing up the bussard collectors and aft fins.
Very cool and very detailed! I was looking at this kit on Amazon and after seeing them built I am gonna get the kit. The decals are a different story though. I might just put the name of the ship on and call it good being I have no experience with decals. I subscribed to you channel also by the way.
You are a patient person. I purchased some of the other 1/2500 ship packs and those decals sets are a nightmare. I eventually had to shelf the project. I think I have to stick with the bigger kits.
This is an impressive build. Just goes to show how big the D is compared to the rest. Didn't realise how big the NX was compared to the TOS connie. I always thought it was quite a bit smaller considering its about 100 years less advanced.
The Enterprise-B, -C, and -E kits were never meant to be wallpapered in decals this way. With the Enterprise-C, especially, I found it a great deal more satisfying to paint most of the color patterning myself, and then just apply the registry decals - much like the original version of the kit from the late '90s/early '00s. (Also makes painting the windows far, far easier.)
Hi, i think they all look great, you've done a great job i think you should be happy really.I have see modellers who do it for a living and some of their brush work leaves alot to be desired so don't worry about it.The problem is, when we see a brush stroke start to go wrong, we try to hard to fix it.That then makes matters worse when all you have to do if it is possible is paint back over it or remove and start again,it usually boils down to using a great paint brush and patience.
When it comes to model making, I'm hopeless at painting and applying decals, so if I ever manage to get this set, I'd do the gold model display from First Contact. I'd just make sure bald headed men with phaser rifles stay well away. :/
Those turned out pretty awesome IMO ... love the NX-01 just wish it was larger ... its my fav of the Enterprise designs. Probably related to my love of the Akira class or maybe its the other way around.
Their still running with shields down of course we are one big happy fleet Enterprise C is my favorite starship it reminds me of a hot rod sleek and fast stay the course Bruce
Mate, you're awesome!!!! love your vids!! I also love how you know when to stop(if you know what i mean). i'm a bit of a perfectionist and i'm sure you are too. your videos showed me how to deal with things that don't always go the way i want them to. perfection is a good goal whilst building model kits or anything ! but sometimes you just have to let it go. the things you make( including the stuff ups) are unique to you. thanks for the great vids man. keep it up!!!!! :) sorry for any errors - wrote this very quickly :)
Beautiful work on these. I was curious how a blue basecoat would look on the D and I may give it a try on mine, knowing it will look a bit bold in person. Thanks also for the heads up on the issues with the C decals.
I will admit I am probably in the vast minority when I admit I actually liked the design of the Enterprise-C more than the D.....but my favorite is the E. It was just so sleek and sexy!!!
I think the E looks nice, but it seems overdesigned and overstylised, the others all manage to look practical as well as stylish. The E feels more like a movie design rather than a vessel designed for a real life purpose. I never liked the D when I was young, because it looks 'fat' compared to the original Enterprise, but looking at it now I think it suited the show perfectly and it's definitely an iconic design.

My favorite has been the refit. Saving the D for last because it’s my favorite. Figured I will have a lot of experience when I get to that one. I haven’t built models in 30 years.
Awesome! I'm so happy you found the video useful, it makes it all worth while! 😃
It's The Future, each and every day :D
Hmmm ... maybe it was the same "3pack" the presenter mentioned. Maybe we all put together the same kit back in the day?
Built and painted this set for a friend a year ago, that enterprise C was a grade-a pain in the arse :D
Wow, that’s some pretty amazing work, great job at making them all look so good! I gave up with these sort of kits a while ago, as I’m utterly hopeless with the larger/wrap-around decals.
Thanks!
Yeah I noticed!
They all look beautiful. I built each of the models along with scratch built XCV 330, Cv6, CVN65, and the enterprise space shuttle to go with the enterprise collection.
And who could forget the HMS Enterprize?
@@EpicMan-ci7jf Yeah how did I forget that!?Built that to.
@@CybercoreTheta Nice!
I am very surprised at how good those ships came out. Round 2 really went all the way on those decals, they really make the ships pop.
Yeah they add a lot to the finished look!
always good to see another left-hander at work!
Indeed!
Thank you. :) I'm not brave enough to start lighting these yet! Maybe some day.
The models are fairly substantial. I thought they would be tiny ,but they are pretty big. Thanks for the video.
I just tuned into your channel, amazing work, just awesome. I'm not a model kit fan, but I love Star Trek. Seeing your work and how the set looks great got me thinking about model kits, especially Star 🌟 Trek. Thank you for your great work.
Thank you, always nice to hear it being appreciated by non-model builders!
That is cool how they are all the SAME SCALE so they are proportionally correct. My how D is huge compared to the original!😲
Hello. Nice. I myself had some decal issues during and after applying decals to my AMT SnapIt Enterprise-D model. doesn’t have to be too darn perfect, though. The top part is nearly complete.
I think you put yourself down to easy. I think they look way better than anything i could do at my level
I brought and built this kit just because I saw the video. The kit was amazing
Awesome! It's a great little set once finished.
Thanks for the video, very nice to see all the Enterprises together!
Glad you enjoyed it!
One solution for the Enterprise C is weathering, after all, the only canon reference we have for this ship, well, she was in pretty bad shape!!
I actually asked my Instagram followers if I should give it the "Romulan treatment" or not. Most voted for not. 😁

That's exactly what I did with my Enterprise-C... battle damage covers up all those little mistakes!
@@PetersaberHD WOW AMAZING
@@KZ-no4rk thanks!
Pretty amazing job there dude, really love them
Thanks!
Thanks for posting. Now I have some forewarning about which models are more difficult. I'm terrible with matching paint and such...I regretted buying this model kit the day after I bought it. Oh well, again, thanks for the help, I'll enjoy the little ones.
The first three Enterprises weren't too difficult, maybe just try those!
Wow, you did really beautiful work on this kit!
Thanks!
That NX01 is really amazing - great job!
Thank you!
Cheers mate
Good job! From one hobbyist to another, I know just how much work that was!
Thanks! It sure was 👍
I bought two of the original set, and built two of the TOS movie versions, one as "1701", the other as "1701-A".
I modified the base so the extra ship could be mounted like the others.
Good times. They came out nice.
Awesome :)
From memory the base for Enterprise D was duck egg blue on the larger early 90’s kit
It was actually azure blue
The Enterprise-D looks amazing! The "too-blue" aztecing was the first thing that stuck out to me as well. The pattern on the nacelles is a bit strange as well. Despite all that, the shape and general look are fantastic. Gives a real sense of scale of this behemoth. Really like the additional details you put on like the windows. Though someone left the warp core ejection door open! 😱
You've done a great job on all the models.
These look great, but I hate doing decals.Nice job.
Thanks!
Nice! Some real talent there. Those transfers I'd mess up straight away and chuck the whole lot in the bin lol... you have so much paitence!
Thank you!
Saw this on Amazon for about 70$ and I think that's worth it, I can't wait to pick up my own
this set looks awesome. they should make klingon and romulan collections too.
When I built the ENT-B in 1/2500, I sanded the raised detailing off, and it was well worth the effort! it looks much more realistic!
They may still have the "B" available in the small 3-pc sets with the "A" , so I would definitely recommend trying a smooth "B". I would leave the detailing on the nacelles, however, because it looked much harder to sand without messing up the bussard collectors and aft fins.
Very nice job!! Did you ever make a video on making you NX ship?
The 1/1000 scale one? Yeah it's in my Star Trek playlist. :)
You did one hell of a job on all of them friend 😮
Thank you!
Very cool and very detailed! I was looking at this kit on Amazon and after seeing them built I am gonna get the kit. The decals are a different story though. I might just put the name of the ship on and call it good being I have no experience with decals. I subscribed to you channel also by the way.
Thank you! Hope you have fun with it!
You did amazing work! Never end by pointing out what you could have done. I see perfection. RWB ❤
Thank you so much!
I just ordered this kit I can't wait to see what this kit offers I hope this review can give me some help on building theme.
Just got the Enterprise D model to build, also got the original Enterprise and the 1701-A. These all look amazing mate 👌🏻
One released in the 90s the refit enterprise had the 1701-A decal
I wish Polar Lights would do a 1/350 Ent B (Excelsior). Great job on all of the girls.
I'd love a 1/1000 scale Enterprise D.
@@modelchili Im thinking about the doing the Eaglemoss TNG Enterprise at 27" long.....its just a pain to wait for a monthly delivery.
You are a patient person. I purchased some of the other 1/2500 ship packs and those decals sets are a nightmare. I eventually had to shelf the project. I think I have to stick with the bigger kits.
Thanks! It can be a challenge for sure.
Oh boy this is a treat! I know what I'm going to be doing for the next hour.
UA-cam actually notified me for this vid.
Good old UA-cam. 😁
Thank you, I appreciate it! :)
I had that kit with the TOS, refit and D...it was really fun to do!
Thank you! Grab yourself the 1/1000 scale NX-01, I have a video build of it!
Patience and finesse. Agreed that such skill are required when modelling. thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Got this one for Christmas! Very excited to start. This video is a must watch for that. Thanks for uploading!
Cool, hope it helps!
LOVE the Graphic on the back of the Box. Great Stuff.
Their still running with shields down of course we are one big happy fleet Enterprise C is my favorite starship it reminds me of a hot rod sleek and fast stay the course Bruce
your videos are so satisfying to watch.
Glad you like them!
*You get my **_HAIRY BLUE THUMB of ENCOURAGEMENT!!!_* ⭐😃👍
Cool!
sorry for any errors - wrote this very quickly :)
Thanks for the feedback! I do value finishing a project over getting every little bit perfect, because as you say you don't know when to stop.
Beautiful work. I hve done this kit myself and it was quite enjoyable, albeit without applying the base coats. Thank you for sharing!...
Nice, thanks for watching!
Was thinking for the "Glowing" areas maybe a metallic base coat with coloured wash on top would work well?
Beautiful work on these. I was curious how a blue basecoat would look on the D and I may give it a try on mine, knowing it will look a bit bold in person. Thanks also for the heads up on the issues with the C decals.
I will admit I am probably in the vast minority when I admit I actually liked the design of the Enterprise-C more than the D.....but my favorite is the E. It was just so sleek and sexy!!!
Nope, you're not alone. D was a bit wonky shaped. C looked much better, but E was/is the best of them.
Blasphemy!
@@andrewdevine3920
That's your opinion. Not everyone agrees with it. Loved TNG, but I always thought 1701D looked wonky and malformed.
I really liked the C model. Did not like the E model; too something.
We’re gonna need a new set of these
