Holy cow, that must have been some heavy duty job, I don't think I would have the nerve nor the patience to build the whole Enterprise, but very good job done, 👏, well done. 😉👏 Now we all just need to move in, new home. 😉 Ha ha.
Hey John! Just had a quick question. I was wondering where you mounted your board. I have the MVE Combo board from Tenacontrols and I’m not quite sure where to mount in the primary saucer. Thanks for your help.
Nate Taylor Hi Nate, I fitted the board with hot glue onto the lower saucer half. I placed it near the dip where the planetary sensor is. Placing the board on the lower half of the saucer gave me access to the wiring/board while having the lower saucer glued onto the neck. This allowed me to continue in control of the wiring until the last moment before sealing on the top saucer. Hope it helps and thank you for watching!

Well, after studying your pictures and guidance, I posted a lengthier comment that has now disappeared. Your ship looks absolutely magnificent. Polar Lights should send you a case of free model kits in return for all the sales you have delivered, including the one I have bought! Did I understand correctly that you cut your own Aztec masks for the outer ring to repair the clamp damage to the paint?
yes, I printed out an Aztec template from starship modeller website (I think) and cut the repair job masks by hand. They were not perfect but it worked out well. Thanks for your kind words and thanks for watching.
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 Thanks for your reply! I am not ready to start, but your experience is really quite helpful. Knowing that such a setback can be managed is reassuring. I am thinking about hand-cutting some practice masks. Or else preparing an Illustrator file and having the local vinyl shop (here in NW Florida) cut some masks to test with (on a smaller spaceship, as you suggested). They say the vinyl they have would be single use only for paint masking.
At 5:58, The 4th leaf from the bottom on right hand corner of the tree on the top left should .00000001 micro meters higher. Please be more accurate to the movie. >:[
Looks beautiful, but its too flat looking. So much that could have been highlighted and weathered to bring out more detail and depth. Especially those panel lines, should have darkened those to make them pop more. LOL, but that's just my opinion.
Wow. Just Wow. I am about to start my first model soon. AMT Enetprise D 1:650. Wish i could light it, but i dont have the knowledge or know how :-(. Thanks for the video :-)

Hardest thing to track down is a 1/8 measuring spoon but always coming back to refer to your build. Orbital Drydock is sold out of the 5 colour masks at the mo but still hoping Gerry/HDA will have his available soon.
bigeasymodeling solutions on facebook have a website and sell the 5 colour mask set same as orbital dry dock but by reaper models or something close to that name. roughly the same price and I hear good things about bigeasy customer service. www.bigeasymodelingsolutions.com/products
Hi John - hope all is well with you these days as a married man! Nearly at the start for my own 1/350 refit but just wondering what white you used for the base colour? Was thinking Tamiya flat white but it only comes in those tiddly wee jars.
Mine took less than 1 minute. I used the medium replicator in engineering. Seriously though, an absolutely fantastic build, and the documentation is wonderful. Everyone can see this was a true labor of love, from the moment you opened the box, until the final UA-cam upload. Thank you for sharing with us.
perfect! I used diffused LEDs which are like pre-sanded for even light distribution. They seemed to look nicer than the clear ones I tried but that is just my preference
Great video, thanks. I have just bought mine (2009 version) however can't seem to get hold of the 5 colour Aztec masks from Orbital Drydock - they say out of stock. I hope I can still get them as I really want to do a 'motion Picture' version. I shall come back to this video when i begin my project. :-)
Just threw all my modeling stuff in the trash. I mean why bother, can't compete with this kind of fine work. J/k I use to be a model builder back in the early 90s. I have the kit just waiting to see how I'm going to go about building it. I was thinking of making the Star Trek VI Version
I have watched your slideshows alot and the one question I have is how did you connect the top and bottom saucer together with out clamp marks around the edges?I would be really grateful if you could answer this questions for mw! Thanks you great professional job! Should win alot of awards!! Gus Dielens
Hi and I'm happy to answer your questions if I can. I clamped the saucer to try to have minimal seam work but as you can see that did not end well. As a matter of fact, mostly the saucers can be "snapped together" and glued totally without any clamping necessary, a mistake I would not make again for sure. Learn something ever build and try to grow skills along the way. Most of all, HAVE FUN thanks for watching. John
I just bought it - still waiting for it. But could you tell me if you used polytranspar or PearlEX for the aztecs? Or something different? I really like the paint job on this one
Thankyou! I used tamiya TS-13 gloss during sealing paint and decal stages then tamiya TS-79 Semi gloss to finish. The tamiya TS spray cans are hot lacquer type paints so testing is needed before using them on other paints.
Wow, breathtaking work. You are a pro. Specially in the setback moments. I bet everyone gasp during those parts of the video. Thank you for creating and sharing this video. 🖖🏻Love Long, and Prosper.
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 nonetheless I've been inspired. There's an empty area in my room that Enterprise will look amazing in. These StarTrek ships are the most unique in SciFi history.
Fantastic! Phenomenal work and persistence! I think this is the most beautiful rendition I have seen yet. Your attention to the Aztec paint job is far better than those Aztec decals.
GREAT SHIP! the best I have seen by far!! interested in doing my own..less model, how much can I expect to pay for supplies? that includes paint lights circuit board Etc? also your Flair for presentation is unsurpassed congrats
Hi Robert, Thank you for the kind comment. Much appreciated. Regarding building the model and supplies, I cant really put a exact price on how much I spent on this build, nor would I want to incase the mrs reads this :) I can say the supplies had been built up over a couple of years with regards to the tool used. I did buy the model and the lighting board and most of the paints and mask sets at different intervals throughout the previous year to spread the cost so I was not paying out a big lump of money at once for everything. It would be a good idea to start small, maybe a car with headlights, or a plane with flashing navigation lights, something like that and build up your supplies and skill level over time. The more projects that are done the more experience you get as well as tools and equipment along the way. Things like the lighting board and mask sets come from overseas (USA) so its best to "be sure" its a hobby you want to stick with before spending lots of money. This was a model I wanted to build as its one of my favourites, but I had to build up to it and do smaller kits and smaller lighting projects before I was ready to tackle this model. I hope this has been useful to you and if there is anything else just shout. Thanks again. JP
First off- gorgeous work! I've got one old these kits in my backlog, but I need more practice at painting before I feel like I can sit down and do it justice, but this is definitely inspiring! Second off- Man, the Jerry Goldsmith score to that first film just gives me chills.
Personally, I HATE the Aztec pattern. Always have. You are the first person I've seen do it 'properly'. I still don't like the pattern, but I do admire your skill in making it look good. Best I've ever seen. Well done.
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 I agree! I have always thought that the Aztec decals look absolutely terrible, and I build and paint my starships without them (by the same token, mine have always had a color scheme closer to what ST: Discovery does on their ships, but years before there was a ST: Discovery show), but your paint job is absolutely beautiful. I wish I had the skill to do something like that, I bow to your superior talent. :)
I am a total beginner with virtually no model building supplies or experience. Before watching this, I was thinking "Yeah, the 1:350 refit with lighting would be really cool to do." After watching this...LOL. I am running away in fear. Your build looks gorgeous, and I am not shy to say something like this is far out of my talent range. It seems like the painting is the most troublesome part from watching this.
Yes, the shimmering paintwork on this particular model is very taxing. My advice would be to start smaller with a 1/1000 or 1/2500 scale starship and try to put that together and build your skills from there. Try to just assemble the model and get it finished to the best of your ability. You will learn more about each project by mistakes and encountering problems. I am still learning every day with this hobby. Best of luck to you and many thanks for watching.
As a small boy, I was absolutely in love w/the Enterprise. I used to put pen drawings of her on the fronts of my school note book binders. And then in 1979, or was it 80? ... The first movie came out. And I was absolutely flabbergasted to see the new, refit ship. I was simply in awe. And to this very day, it's my all time favorite version of the beautiful lady we all call, The USS ENTERPRISE 1701.
Amazing work! I have the slightly later boxing with the white plastic. £15 from a local market stall about 10 years ago. Bargain! One day, she will be built. How strongly does the saucer attach to the neck? My biggest fear is that it would snap over time.
If you make sure all paint and primer is removed from both the neck pins area and saucer holes area where the parts join, (as with all glued sections) I use cotton buds dipped in acetone to carefully make the areas bare plastic, and then I use tube model glue like revell or humbrol not quick setting or thin glue. This makes the bond overnight, molecular and it welds the parts together really good. I've had no problems and the model still sits on the base beautifully. Thanks for watching and good luck.
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 Thanks. I have considered a 5 minute epoxy to add further reinforcement, but if yours is still holding up it's probably not needed. I also noticed that you left out the windows. Great idea, masking those would be a nightmare. Did you glaze them after with Clearfix or other canopy type glue? Will have to get it done one day. Not sure my electrical skills can do the model justice at the moment. My other half will probably kill me though when I do. She tutted at a small Jet Provost appearing on a shelf. A 3-foot Enterprise will push her over the edge!
Would love to see spacedock around it. Small removable shuttlepod, magnetic attachment for transfer of Adm. Kirk and Cmd. Scott as well as a Vulcan shuttle 😁😀😍
Impressive build. Your attention to detail and commitment to getting it right are commendable. I have seen many builds where the nacelles are neither level nor positioned correctly above the saucer. You got that right as well. Also nice images to display your work. Great job!
Bitchin work!!! I stick to my stainless steel 3D models just to avoid painting :P It’s insane the amount of detail that went into it, that’s spot on. I watched all 35 minutes to see the base...lol. PS: all the fine details but am I the only one who noticed the McDonalds looking “M” on the bridge?
Hello John. I am impressed by so much accuracy. Your model is simply amazing! You can be proud of your work. I live in France and have a chance to possess this model from POLAR LIGHT acquired on EBay (because untraceable at our home) from now on 5 years and he always rests in his box:-/. The reason is that I imagined practically all the disappointments which you met and it slowed down me in my project. The work which you realized restores me the courage to put me finally in the task and your video was a real happiness to look. Thank you
Very nice John but it is a little shame you did not use the DLM impulse engine grill replacement part, the upper bridge part looks a little odd sticking up higher but i can see why you have done this to get the spot lights to shine out onto the hull. Overall super work especially the Aztecs :)

Holy cow, that must have been some heavy duty job, I don't think I would have the nerve nor the patience to build the whole Enterprise, but very good job done, 👏, well done. 😉👏
Now we all just need to move in, new home. 😉 Ha ha.
United Federation Of Modelers One last question: What color did you use for your base coat before applying the paint masks? Thanks!
What a cool ved...at least not showing any damage on it...just a straightforward looking ship....indeed...n makes you want to go out and buil d one...which I plan to have one day soon.if Biden helps me again.....😂😂😂😂
Definitely my favorite version of the enterprise. Heres my list
1. Enterprise A
A close second: Enterprise D
3. TOS enterprise
4. Enterprise B
5. Enterprise E
6. Enterprise C
7. Enterprise NX-01
I botched my nacelles and gave up on the kit... until William Shatner came to Perth Australia ozcomiccon... one signed polar lights dish , in bubble wrap ever since with the sharpie he used 🤗 .
This is beautiful
I'm building mine at the moment. She's HUGE!!
Incredible video- so much work put in! Really amazing job!
@@misterlyle. best of luck with your build!
Great work, looks good. Love the shots you took, especially the finished model!
At 5:58, The 4th leaf from the bottom on right hand corner of the tree on the top left should .00000001 micro meters higher.
Please be more accurate to the movie. >:[
My friend, you bought the kit or made all of it. If you bought where did it go? I am a brasilian man. Thanks
It is the polar lights 1/350 enterprise Refit model. You can purchase the model from many places online, eBay Amazon ect.
Very impressive
Looks beautiful, but its too flat looking. So much that could have been highlighted and weathered to bring out more detail and depth. Especially those panel lines, should have darkened those to make them pop more. LOL, but that's just my opinion.
Fresh out of drydock was the look I was going for.
Wow. Just Wow. I am about to start my first model soon. AMT Enetprise D 1:650. Wish i could light it, but i dont have the knowledge or know how :-(. Thanks for the video :-)
Thank you. You can easily find info on UA-cam regarding lighting and battery's to start. Good luck
I have just subscribed to you and beautiful model of the Enterprise
I'm delighted any chance to look at the ENTERPRISE-CLL-1701 amazing ship she is.
Your incredible work on even the smallest of details is one of a kind workmanship. Your setbacks were hartbreaking and yet you persevered. And what a masterpiece you created. Thank you for sharing.
These kits , are 200 bucks now , omg , awesome build mate congrats to you :)
Can you put the links for the wht you used to make this model I would live to do the same
Most of what I used I showed in the video. Primer, paints pearlescent powders ect.
Thanks for watching
Fantastic, just amazing. I hope it's kept somewhere safe now :)
Just ... FANTASTIC !!! Congratulations my friend ! Oww nice music selection too !
Thank you! :)
So what did you do during the Corona virus lockdown? What Corona virus lockdown?
This is stunningly beautiful and your craftsmanship and dedication speak volumes. Thanks for sharing this!
I'll have a wee look.
Hi John - hope all is well with you these days as a married man! Nearly at the start for my own 1/350 refit but just wondering what white you used for the base colour? Was thinking Tamiya flat white but it only comes in those tiddly wee jars.
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 That link has changed. It appears that sfxmodeling is the new site.
Holy Smokes - WOW That is really amazing! I can't begin to think how long that took you. Just Wow!!!!
Gorgeous model though. Worthy of the hours you spent constructing it.
Wapr mode? Beautiful model, but the text needs work...!
R Rho Thank you so much!
What size of leds did yiu use for the various RCS thrusters? Thinking 5mm for the saucer and 3mm for the dish and nacelles?
try here. Best of luck & thanks for watching

Just threw all my modeling stuff in the trash. I mean why bother, can't compete with this kind of fine work.
J/k I use to be a model builder back in the early 90s. I have the kit just waiting to see how I'm going to go about building it. I was thinking of making the Star Trek VI Version
its all about enjoying what you build. if you have fun doing it that is all that matters! Im happy to answer any questions you may have.
John
faastic, i wanna do it couse my first work with this model don't go well. What color have you used for the external?
I mixed up tamiya white 90% and tamiya grey 10% "roughly".
I wanted a slightly off white colour but just white would work fine.
I just bought it - still waiting for it. But could you tell me if you used polytranspar or PearlEX for the aztecs? Or something different? I really like the paint job on this one
pearl ex pigments.
Amazing! What did you use for your gloss coat?
Thankyou! I used tamiya TS-13 gloss during sealing paint and decal stages then tamiya TS-79 Semi gloss to finish. The tamiya TS spray cans are hot lacquer type paints so testing is needed before using them on other paints.
Amazing work, well worth the watch... Thank you for sharing your adventure where few will go! Live long and Prosper!
Manny Grillo Thank you so much for your kind comment. I am glad you enjoyed the video. 🖖
Wow, breathtaking work. You are a pro. Specially in the setback moments. I bet everyone gasp during those parts of the video. Thank you for creating and sharing this video. 🖖🏻Love Long, and Prosper.
Thank you very much. Not a pro just dedicated and slightly OCD. LLAP
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 nonetheless I've been inspired. There's an empty area in my room that Enterprise will look amazing in. These StarTrek ships are the most unique in SciFi history.
Just starting with modelling....but this is absulutely fantastic! I almost started to cry by the brilliance of your build!
Fantastic! Phenomenal work and persistence! I think this is the most beautiful rendition I have seen yet. Your attention to the Aztec paint job is far better than those Aztec decals.
Doug Mappin Thankyou Doug. I appreciate your kind words and I am pleased you enjoyed the slideshow.
GREAT SHIP! the best I have seen by far!! interested in doing my own..less model, how much can I expect to pay for supplies? that includes paint lights circuit board Etc? also your Flair for presentation is unsurpassed congrats
The same here
Personally, I HATE the Aztec pattern. Always have. You are the first person I've seen do it 'properly'. I still don't like the pattern, but I do admire your skill in making it look good. Best I've ever seen. Well done.
Thanks! :)
man I wish I had the talent/skill to build something like that, epic job
It is gorgeous. Have you ever thought of making them and selling them to others?
Thankyou! Im not into the hobby to make money. I solely do it for enjoyment and for something to do in my spare time.
I am a total beginner with virtually no model building supplies or experience. Before watching this, I was thinking "Yeah, the 1:350 refit with lighting would be really cool to do."
After watching this...LOL.
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 yeah, thanks for the advice. I will give that a shot on a smaller one.
just finished watching this. speechless. superb. awesome.
i remember first seeing the refit enterprise, i thought the saucer rim was 4 decks.
refit enterprise is a small starship, but the most beautiful
Astounding piece of work, and a credit to your tenacity and perseverance. Just one, tiny complaint... Why no pics in the dark?
Good point!
Great job!
Many thanks!
You should be proud.
Fantastic work!! You really can tell where the hours and hours (and hours!) of work went!
+James Jacob Cheers James :)
Bitchin work!!! I stick to my stainless steel 3D models just to avoid painting :P It’s insane the amount of detail that went into it, that’s spot on. I watched all 35 minutes to see the base...lol.
PS: all the fine details but am I the only one who noticed the McDonalds looking “M” on the bridge?
yes, there are a few "M" shapes on the bridge, nothing to do with a fast food chain LOL
@@JohnPetrySPECIES8472 I've been wondering why there are McDonald's arches on the Enterprise.
Now that is a great looking Enterprise, very professional indeed. Tremendous work my friend.
Thank you!
Thank you
Je vous remercie!
I am glad you enjoyed the video. Its great to hear that it might inspire you to build the model yourself. Good luck :)
Best spaceship ever next to reliant and show real or sci fi
Yes, the Enterprise fleet are just brilliant and I have to agree The 1701 Refit is in my top 3.
Very nice John but it is a little shame you did not use the DLM impulse engine grill replacement part, the upper bridge part looks a little odd sticking up higher but i can see why you have done this to get the spot lights to shine out onto the hull.
Overall super work especially the Aztecs :)
your modeling skills are absolutely beautiful , can you build one for me and how much would that cost ?
Thank you for your comment. Unfortunately I only build for my hobby and not professionally. There are some great builders out there like trekworks. I hope you find someone reputable to fulfil your request. Many thanks again.
