- Protests in Israel are continuing despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to delay a key part of controversial plans to overhaul the justice system.
On Monday night, the prime minister said he would pause the legislation to prevent a "rupture among our people".
In unprecedented events, the country's biggest trade union called a strike, and Israelis watched society close down around them.
The co-ordinated action was designed to push Mr Netanyahu back from the brink of pushing through the reforms by the end of this week.
Opposition Leader Yair Lapid called it the "biggest crisis in the history of the country".

65% of the Israeli population voted for this coalition. Yes there are many thousands who lost who are protesting but what are they protesting about? They are protesting because they don't want democratically elected politicians to choose judges. If you don't have democratically elected people choosing judges that means that there will be unelected people choosing judges. That would be against the law in France and the UK and the USA so why should it be different in Israel?

Yeah...I wouldn't be convinced by a promise to merely delay the end of a democracy I lived in either. They need to replace and refine significant elements of the whole political apparatus that has brought them to this brink in order to really get away from it and be safe to 'go back to normal'.

This is what happens when you don't have a constitution which puts limits on the government's ability to impose this kind of tyranny of the majority.
A constitution wouldn't do anything, Russia has a constitution that explicitly enshrines freedom of speech and a free press believe it or not, and look what's happened there. It only exists so they claim to have one but is conveniently ignored or 're-interpreted' whenever it suits. The only thing that keeps governments in check are the opposition and ultimately the people. The supreme court is also suppose to prevent government overreach, unless the government overreaches and tries to overrule them, as what happened here.

@@explorer47422 A constitution is not a panacea, but it is certainly a start. In other words, it may not sufficient for democracy, but it is usually necessary. The American constitution establishing an independent Supreme Court and giving it power to strike down overreaching attempts by other branches of government has been a hallmark of US democracy and has worked remarkably well for over two centuries. As far as the government of Israel's attempts to overreach its supreme court are concerned, this very exercise is made possible by a lack of a constitution in the first place, proving my point.
Kudos to the Israeli people for keeping up the demonstrations until this horrendous plans by this right wing extremists government is scrapped and gotten rid of. Keep the fight going.

I'm glad the Israeli population is not being fooled by political maneuvering, be strong and fight for your democracy.
It's just an unfortunate fact that Netanyahu was re-elected, but for anyone that is still wondering - the only thing that stops far-right movements from taking power is force. Better if it happens in numbers and overwhelms them, worse if violence is necessary to overcome numbers, but they leave no other options.
I really wish there were better ways to handle these people, who are essentially radicals, but time and time again they prove that there is not. Left to their own devices, they'll overturn every aspect of democracy to take power, and unfortunately it seems most modern democracies failed to build themselves proper defenses and proper effective laws and institutions to deal with anti-democratic action fast and in strong enough terms to stop proposals like these from surfacing.
If the people want to stop far-right figures from using all their weight in politics to turn it into an authoritarian dictatorship, trampling over any democratic structure, institutions, laws, rules and whatnot, it will have to be by force, because they are also willing to use force, power, money, violence and hatred for their purposes.
There is an ongoing weaponization of politics, of misinformation, of FUD and hate speech, conspiracy theories, along with racism, prejudice, sexism, puritanism, religious zealotry and other factors to take power going on the far right, and they have been gaining territory with it.
If people don't fight against it now, they will take over and dictate the future, which is a quick path for extinction.
