A slight correction to that analysis: the oil depot that is currently burning furiously in Proletarsk (Rostov oblast) has nothing to do with russia's export drive. It is a strategic storage of diesel fuel that is (was!) destined to supply fuel to russian army units mostly in Donbass region. So it is actually even more damaging to russia than just hitting its oil exports.
Yeah, they can't put out the fuel tank fires, so it's a big hit.

The main goal is to stop Russian infrastructure. At present the interim goal is the kursk power plant.
The kursk power plant is the provider for the vast southern area of Russia. And with cooler weather approaching, a sizable disruption in provision would make an elegant buffer for Ukraine against further incursions or build-up coming from rostov von don which is the Russian southern command area as power would be a measured asset for the russians in the southern regions.
The resultant power projection would be neutered and with subsequent destruction of the road/rail bridge into Crimea, any movement along the southern Ukrainian border is delayed, permitting a development of further defense fortifications.
It is a peer, pat poker hand. Russia cannot retreat without embarrassing the military or political agenda but must or lose the military stationed there as they cannot resupply them. And in a transitional environment like a war, effective supply and replenishment is an essential commodity.
But fortifying a defensive parimeter around kursk and forcing the plant in a cold state while disabling key non serviceable portions, it delays repair and this at a time during winter. Further hampering Russian citizens and making plain the assertion that the strike is commercial, environmental and most importantly economical. Especially with the devastation of the oil service facility in Rostov Oblast. The winter months will be critical for Russian citizens in the south.
The base premise for this, is the vast oil reserves under the Luhansk Oblast and Donetsk Oblast provinces. Which russia sees as an economic choke point for their ability to make money. At present there is no competition. But with the eventual end of hostilities, russia's loss of these Ukrainian oblasts would hamper the economy of russia (and oligarchies) control of fuel to the west. Remember the older soviet transport fuel lines (and newer russian lines) are already in Ukraine . By keeping these oblasts and Crimea they gain the warm water ports of the black sea and by fiat a negotiated easement of passage thru the Turkish held straits without recourse.
The real reason for this war.

Exactly. These strikes aren’t random or a collective pressure on Russian exports, they are precise and strategic.
Plenty of foam on the beer no foam for the refineries. Russian authorities will export product with matches if necessary, especially if the Ukrainianse insists.
I'm trying to imagine the impact of the very idea that Moscow is vulnerable and under attack - a far cry from what anyone could have imagined at the beginning of this "3 day special military operation"

Saw a fascinating interview conducted by an Italian reporter with a Russian refugee. The reporter asked the woman how long she had been at the camp and the woman replied, "Ever since the beginning of the war." The confused reporter asked her if she had been there since 2022 and the confused refugee replied, "No, just for 6 days" referring to the actual day Ukraine troops invaded. Credible sources say Putin is _very_ aware of the gruesome fate of at least one of the autocrats you mention. The 2nd guy said Russia is still "taking" territory in Donbass. What they're doing is TRYING to take it, while incurring the largest losses yet of men, equipment, and TERRITORY. Russia is losing well over 1400 men a day, with no sign of any reduction of that number at any future point. Putin is in a desperate position.
One word can make a huge difference. Did these guys not learn that in school? Have they no common sense? In this context, that 1 word means a vastly different thing!
The difference between "taking" and "trying to take" is so VERY enormous. And on top of the lives lost and men crippled, this is costing them millions of dollars a day, even without the multimillion dollar a day sanctions. The optics of this 3 Day Operation, which has become a 3 YEAR Operation, are a complete disaster in every way for Putin.

They are, sadly, taking territory. Not much, not quickly, and at terrible cost. But claiming they are only "trying" is simply inaccurate. They have been crawling toward Pokrovsk, and if true to pattern are likely to shell it into dust. However, it and its twin city are collectively ~25% larger than Bakhmut. Russia no longer has Wagner, and are in a considerably more precarious position now wrt men & materiel. Conversely Ukraine, despite losses, have successfully retained sufficient experience within its forces. I think Russia will destroy the city, but that's as far as they'll go. I don't think they'll ever take it.

I wasted over 30 minutes watching this, only to find that it covers analysis of tactics, strategy and weapons, and not a single second on what was advertised by the title!!!! I find this misleading and disrespectful!!!!
The fact that people in Kursk don't seem to mind having Ukrainian troops moving into and through their towns will mean that the AFU can take a greater area of land with the troops they have available. Hearts and minds is the key to success here.

Ukraine were/ is given the weapons because everyone has a right to defend themselves.
If the weapons given are used to attack another country it can be seen as NATO attacking by proxy.
NATO is an alliance between members (Ukraine is not a member) to protect each other, the musketeer oath: “one for all and all for one” also called article 5 in the Washington treaty signed in August 1949.
The only time it has been used was on 9/11/2001, when the US asked for it to be activated.

European Nations must improve their ability to manufacture its own weapons and not be so dependent on U.S. weapons. Doing so will help Europe's economy and eliminate U.S. radical politics from Europe's defense. No one in the U.S. seems to understand that a victory for Ukraine would be the greatest boost to European security and save NATO billions of dollars in the long run.

We need to consider that Ukraine planned this incursion for one year and during this time they gathered substantial forces and still maintained their responses to Russian attacks elsewhere. So the Russians now need to match this new force position in a big rush or else the incursion will rapidly become impossible for the Russians to manage. And UF weaponry has evolved to be more flexible and capable whereas the Russian weaponry seems to be less adaptive and less varied.

As for Ukraine using ressources at the expense of defending Donbas, i wager that at least some ressources consist of military kit that would be of very limited use in Donbas anyways. Drone and trench warfare is not where you use high mobility and river crossing vehicles. Also with more hopeful news from the US elections coming Ukraine propably feels less compelled to be frugal with their ressources like they were forced to be last year.

I understand the theory but I don't buy it. I don't think he's going anything any time soon unfortunately. Remember, he isn't dumb and knows the game of corruption better than most/anyone. An assassination could be scary because whoever replaces him could be more reckless and hurt more people. I'd think when he gets a whiff of possible replacement, there will be a lot of polished floors next to windowsills in some very high end Russian estates.

Anything that weakens Putin weakens Trump who has tied himself to Putin at the hip. A Trump loss strengthens the democratic (EU & US etc.) alliance and Ukraine. If Ukraine can hang on to this advance until Nov. 5th it's a massive victory for freedom everywhere. That effect is difficult to quantify but shouldn't be discounted!

Where has Trump "tied himself to Putin at the hip"? Trump denounced the full-scale invasion of Ukraine two and a half years ago. The mainstream media refused to report that because it didn't fit their narrative that Trump was tied to Putin. Also Pres. Trump supported Mike Johnson in bringing the $61 billion aid package for Ukraine to a vote in the House of Representatives last April. How is that fact consistent with the myth that Pres. Trump "tied himself to Putin at the hip"?

Oligarchs are just as scared of Putin as he is scared of them. They can take each other out. The difference is that the oligarchs can have the president position filled. Putin could try to take all of their wealth but it does hurt Russia's economic success in the future.
