Better Than Banana Bread Protein Shake

- This low-carb Banana Bread Protein Shake will hit the spot that you miss. Great as a dessert or as a treat, enjoy it guilt free! Want to reduce the carbs? See below!
To reduce the carbs of this shake you can do the following:
Use half a banana. Bananas are also not 'straight sugar' - theyre a mix of sucrose, glucose, and fructose, which is partially why it has a glycemic index of 51. This means that your blood glucose wont have the same spiking response (for most people)
Use a protein isolate with 0g carbs. The whey I used in this recipe accounts for ~8g.
Cut the almond milk. In place, you can use water and a tbsp of heavy cream

And then he cleans, because ants...
😂😂😂
I know I kept thinking the same thing everytime he wiped the chopping block
@@cynthiastratton1034Me too, lol
😂😂😉
I find myself saying in my head as I'm wiping the counter "because...ants" 🤣🤣🤣 always in my head!
My favorite food beard-man coming in with another video! I've been avoiding using bananas in my protein shakes lately since I thought they were too high carb, interesting tip about their glycemic index. I think I have to try this now.
I have an interesting experiment brewing with bananas. They are higher in carbs, but, personally, theyve been great for me. Fruits are also treated different in the body because of the nutrients, fiber, etc. Apparently scientists don't have a real good understanding as to why though
You really do have the best recipes, they’re different and creative 👍
I miss you and your channel
A new Dennis video always makes for a better day. Looks delicious! P.S. I use your ginger paste sauce (chicken and broccoli video) constantly -- it makes veggies palatable. Thank you! 😬👍💕
Awesome!
Missed you! Thanks for sharing this awesome recipe!!!
THanks!
solid video, hope you are doing well man
also don't they have respirators made for beards?
We are super HAPPY to see you back again!!
Partially back 😂
Glad to see that you're keeping keto-ness in mind for your recipes. Also might consider giving this a try when I have to make one of my 3-4 hour grocery runs instead of picking up overpriced fast food to keep me going.
Will definitely most likely be healthier than fast food too!
@@BlackTieKitchen Even beyond the nutritional contents, it's just so damn expensive. When even McDonald's is selling their Medium Fries for the price of a hamburger, you know it's time to start brown bagging it.
GORGEOUS RECIPE - Easily adapted for Keto. I use that exact butter extract and I have a banana extract that actually tastes like real banana. I think I would add more walnuts too. Delish.
Which banana extract do you use? They typically are like grape flavored things to me - taste nothing like it lol. I also added notes in the description to make it more low-carb!
Dennis ... it's OliveNation BRAND, Banana Emulsion for Baking
I gotta be honest I love the fake grape flavour of my electolyte mix. I sometimes put it in bubbly water and pretend I'm drinking Grape Crush 🤣 Now I feel judged 😆
Yes ... saw low carb adjustments ... think you mentioned them in the video.
Yo Dennis! Ive been making this recipe for a while now (thank you), but today, instead of protein powder, I used Peanut Butter powder (PBFit). Dude. It was fantastic! You should try it out!
Wow, I just found this channel and I am addicted, I really hope more is to come.
Thank you for this video. So good to see you back. I recently bought a bunch of flavorings on Amazon, and one was butter. Others were fruit flavors because I want to enjoy fruit flavors without the carbs. I can see adding butter flavor to many recipes to make them more delicious.
Yeah - the butter flavor works really really well. Ive made a chocolate cake variant that's really good!
I miss your videos. They are great and so entertaining.
Can’t wait for your next video miss you bro!!
Great to see you back. 🙂
Half back 😂
Delicious. Are you in your new home? Glad your videos are back. Great recipes. Thank you
Not yet - so my publishing schedule will still be affected :/
I did it today and is awesome, hope that this channel upload videos again, thx
Where are you !!!!
Uh.... that's gonna kick everybody out of ketosis, no question. 36 NET carbs in one shake? No way. (I'm sure it's delicious though)
About 12 come from the protein powder I used in conjunction with the almond milk. I also added notes to the description on how to make it lower carb... and I also didnt claim it was keto ;-)
Yum. Thank you it looks delicious.
I am definately going to make this shake. Yum. Thanks for making some new content. It's always nice to see you creating in the kitchen.
Thanks!
Looks super-yummy!
Definitely gonna try!
Let me know what you think of it
Butter flavor is amazing, looks delicious 😍
It is, it is!
You're back! What a blessed day 😁
Partially back 😂
I’ll have to give this a shot. Never thought of adding butter extract. Also, nice nod to Good Eats with that interlude fact card & jazzy music.
The butter extract was something I wanted to play with for a long time and finally did. It's crazy how it makes the flavor pop in a recipe!
Where are you? Did you stop making videos?
I was told green banana's are very good for stomach issues especially ulcers.
I love your videos... thank you for putting in so much work to make great videos and amazing content! We love making protein "ice cream" in this house and I have some additional tips for you. I love adding fiber to my shakes as well. It's a great way to hide it and thicken it as well and you do not taste it at all. The fiber I always add is whole psyllium husk... it really thickens it. I also learned from a recipe (by Greg Doucette) about adding xanthan gum to thicken it. Then I also learned that a great ingredient to add is guar gum which adds creaminess (which you might not need specifically when using bananas, but it is helpful in my chocolate ice cream recipe). I'd recommend adding these next time to see if that makes it even creamier for you. For that amount you demonstrated in the video, I'd start with 1/8 t. xantnan gum and 1/4 t. guar gum. Good luck! I hope you try it. It was a "protein shake" game changer.
Yup, its a trick I plan on recording for a future video. The guar gum is something Ive been using for years, but as you stated - not necessary when you have fruits in the shake. Its the lack of fat and carbs that really requires the guar!
Thanks for this great idea! I haven't been using my nutri bullet and I should. Yum!
Time to bust it out of the cupboard!
Great quick and easy protein shake
Yup! And you can reduce the carbs more - I left some notes in the description if how to do so!
Just added butter flavor to our shopping list! I have some verrrrry ripe bananas staring at me and now I know what to make instead of bread. Thank youuuuuu😊
Let me know what you think!
protips/improvements - use the smaller thai bananas from ur local asian market if possible , they have a much stronger flavor , and just use a big nob of real BUTTER , grass-fed if available , personally we like some cinnamon/nutmeg but thats just a flavor add and if the bananas are sweet/ripe enough we dont add any extra sugar [unnecessary xtra carbs/calories]
This looks delicious!
It is!!
Oh yummy I have those frozen bananas in my freezer just waiting for me to make banana bread but I have plenty to do both. Good to see you.
Let me know what you think of it!
Long time no see! This looks fabulous. I think I may try it with Coconut Cream/Milk. Great to see your videos again Dennis. I don’t know what happened.
You’re looking great! 👍😎
I can try this when I do carb cycling.
Great recipe well worth a try. Just one thing, bananas are usually quite sweet to begin with. Is it possible that you don’t even need the brown sugar?
Thanks Dennis! This looks delicious and I want to try it. Is there a way to just use butter rather than buying butter flavor?
If you decide to use butter, it will likely give the shale a very oily mouthfeel, and also blow out the calories. But, if you do, i would brown 1 tbsp of butter and then add about 1/2 tbsp of it
Eyyy I have an overly ripe banana right now in my kitchen that I was gonna throw away. Gonna try this as soon as I get home tonight. Thanks for these great recipes!
Let me know how it turns out!
Dude, this was awesome! Since I had vanilla flavored almond milk, I skipped out on adding more vanilla. The wife thinks it's great and I'm definitely making some for work. Kudos to you sir!
Glad you liked it!
Whey protein concentrate is also creamier than isolates.
We miss you :(
Looks delicious, however, the carbs (even net carbs) blow me away. You didn't (or I missed it) say how many ounces the micros are based on, but I am guessing 8. If I can find a way to bring down the carb count (I always use total carbs) and still have your delicious looking (and I'm sure tasting) shake I would love it. I took have a sweet tooth, well several sweet teeth and this would fit the bill.
Thank you as always for you awesome videos.
You can use half a banana. The whole (large) banana is about 30g, and that protein powder specifically is about 8g of carbs (2 sugar). You can eliminate the carbs from the protein by used a pure protein isolate which should have zero carbs. You can also use water and heavy cream and eliminate any carbs from the almond milk! Bananas themselves are super interesting - the 30g is not just straight sugar, its a mix of sucrose, fructose, and glucose so its not the same as eating a 'sugar' carb! Hope this helps!
I updated the description to add these notes! I meant to talk about it when I recorded it... but... I did it live 😅
@@BlackTieKitchen Thank you for this information. I will give this a try, and I am sure my sweet tooth will rejoice in this shake.
Sounds very good.
It is!
Missing you and your videos. Hope all is well.
Thanks Dennis. I think I'll have to use just half of a Banana...super sensitive to sugar (simple carbs) in any form with my form of Diabetes. But I've been looking for a delicious protein shake that I can use as a breakfast on the go or a mid day snack, love Banana bread and this looks like it will hit the spot. Giving it a try today. Just have to defrost a small ripe banana. Also presuming that your carb and protein counts are for the whole shake and that looks like way more than 8 oz. Will probably be 2 snacks out meals for me. 🥰
Use the banana frozen! I also added to the comments some strategies for making it lower carb!
@@BlackTieKitchen You are so AWESOME ❤
My mom makes the best banana bread in the world with chocolate chips and walnuts. I have found good banana flavoring from olive nation(it is not a candy fake flavor) but the muffin part of the recipe is still eluding me. It is one of those thing I will cheat with at the holidays...and yes, it's worth it!
Agreed on the worth it lol. Just work around it!
And he cleans 😅🤩
Fructose is much more glycating than glucose. Further, the HbA1c test is not sensitive to the glycation caused by fructose. So the fact that fructose does not raise your blood glucose is irrelevant. It is still doing damage. It is just off the "radar" for typical measurement techniques. Your blood glucose meter or your CGM does NOT tell you the whole story. This shake looks delicious but I would not consume it if I were seriously trying to reverse metabolic issues or lose a bunch of weight. If you are in maintenance and metabolically fit, this might be a nice treat once in a while. That is my opinion, YMMV.
Brown sugar! Who'd a thunk it? You of course. Looks yummy!
It makes the difference!
Quick question, do you have any references about banana not being a high glycemic index food? It’ll be awesome if you could do a video about it
I wish I could eat bananas, but that would make my blood sugar crazy for about 24 hours. I think I’m going to try this but substitute frozen pumpkin for the banana and use my pumpkin spice protein powder. With a dollop of whipped cream, I’m guessing this will taste like pumpkin pie!
Yes, it will! I actually have a pumpkin pie recipe that Im saving for.. you guessed it, thanksgiving 😅
We need you back 💔💔💔💔💔💔
Another good video. Thank you. And why does Dennis clean? 🐜
😂😂😂
Hmm I wonder how it would be with a piece of ripe plantain-that nice rich plantain flavor?=).
Lol probably not a good idea
Yay!--The BEARD is still there! HA! Luv the shakes! 🥤🥤😎
😂😂
Love your videos…
Alton Brown vibes ❤
😢 too many carbs for me… but looks delicious. I fell off the wagon over the holidays and just now getting back on.
I added some info in the description to cut down on the carbs - might help!
I’ve been wanting to buy banana food flavoring which is Natural and artificially flavored. They don’t really explain much on the ingredient list so I wonder how many carbs are in the food flavoring mixes
I'm going to tweek this..for my Ketoness... everything except banana..and no banana flavor..I agree it's gross..but I will add some brown butter that I make...and maybe more nuts...
Great job...
Let me know how it goes! I added some notes in the description to make it more low-carb!
Was the breakdown of carbs and protein for the glass you poured or the entire amount you mixed up.
For the entire thing. Also, about 12g of the carbs comes from the protein powder I used in conjunction with the almond milk. You can reduce that even more - I left notes in the description that I didnt mention in the video
is there a reason to use butter flavour instead of just butter? ty for your insight!
Calories. Butter will also add a lot of fat, which will give a very waxy mouthfeel. And, since you are mixing it with ice, even if you melted it, youd probably start to get little chunks of butter as it solidifies, which isnt fun to drink 😂
@@BlackTieKitchen OOOOOooooh! ya - hard pass! haha! your solution is the smart way to on all counts! ty 4 the insight!
Yummy.. Voy pa ya!! Lol
jaja
Yum this looks great - will be giving it a go soon.
I was just watching one of your older videos and then jumped forward to this one. I really prefer you talking in your own voice and not the faux fancy English accent. Much more authentic.
All your other videos are awesome too - personally I just found that a bit off putting
bro come back
👍
Was that a little nod to Good Eats near the end?
Probably? lol
The overripe banana on my counter trying to slink into the corner...
GET BACK HERE! 😂
Dennis where did you go😪
Any updates ? Kinda missing your posts... 💖✨💞💫💝
So why is this called a "banana bread" shake when it just seems like a standard banana shake recipe. Where does the "bread" part come in?
It says better than banana bread
I expected to see a different background- a Georgia mansion style home! Lol
lol definitely not a mansion, not a big time youtuber 😂
New videos anytime soon? Have you decided to move on to something different?
Man, where have you disappeared?😢
Miss your videos😢😢😢😢
Where are you? Waiting for some new content
thanks daddy 🥳🥳🥳
Allergic to whey. Egg white protein instead?
Should work fine! If its unflavored, you may have to add more vanilla flavor and sweetener
Where'd you go? Miss your content. I had just disavowed you! Hope all is well!
I'm new here. Is he coming back? 😅
where u been
Miss your cooking skills and quirky humour
I'm going to try this, but I'll be adding a raw chicken breast and black pepper. Extra nutrients. #gains.
Yeaaaaaaah buddy
🤣
Can you just add melted butter?
No - because it will solidify in the ice cold shake, leaving little globs of cold butter which are rather unpleasant
i thought whey protein was super high glycemic???
Why would it be high glycemic? Its pretty much straight protein. However, there are certain brands that have a huge amount of carbs to make it taste more like a milkshake, so you have to avoid those
@@BlackTieKitchen apologies... wrong words... articles and videos said whey protein spikes insulin, and may even contribute to insulin resistance, so not suitable for keto. So I have avoided it for years, and when a recipe uses it, i recently heard you can sub for egg white protein powder. Do you think that would work?
It should work, yes!
i just saw another video saying whey protein spikes insulin really high
Where are you!!😢😢😢😢😢
You ok? Been gone a long time
what the heck is butter flavor
Where are you? I MISS YOUR FACE 😢
Busy :( have a lot planned tho!
Uggggggggg you’re killing meeeeeeeee 😵😵💫😫😩
your still in the old house. when you moving into your new place and how is the new job going.
Slowly and quickly, on all fronts 😂
@@BlackTieKitchen🐢🏎️💨
You forgot the🍒
Yes 😂🤦♂️
You still alive bro?
You were on your way to become the "Alton Brown" of low carb. I don't know what happened in your life to just give it all up, I know your last video said "new job". Not only did you get ppl excited on keto items that taste as same as the real deal (ice cream, pasta, pizza), but I dont know if you realized just how lucrative this would've been for you. You would've easily had a over 500K followers by now. Six to seven figure sponsorships from Keto and low carbs brands; ad revenues; kitchen appliance companies, your own cookbook etc...
What happened to him....is he dead?
