    Dudes! I just found your channel and subscribed. I want to say your video about the journey of a suicide survivor really spoke to me. As I have struggled for year with certain things and drums have been my passion and the thing that helps me get through. I've been on a journey for years trying to get to the place you're at. Don't necessarily want to be famous just want to play and play regularly and everywhere with awesome people making awesome music lol. This video here spoke to something that I've found to be true, I've never been good at rudiments and sticking but have always played the way the song feels and what's needed just happens lol I can't explain it... Either way, you have a new subscriber so keep the videos coming and thanks for saying it's not your fault!

    • @joshuajosiahcolumbus
      @joshuajosiahcolumbus 6 років тому +6

      Steve F Totally the opposite for me, once I discovered rudiments and everything I could with them I had more inspiration and ideas than ever before and my entire vocabulary on the drum set has been expanding 3 fold ever since, rudiments are the key my passion is burning hotter and brighter than ever

    • @schaddalton2506
      @schaddalton2506 6 років тому +2

      Nope. It's not to say they are the be-all-end-all, but there is exactly ZERO to be lost and infinite possibilities to be gained by learning your rudiments and finding ways to incorporate them into your playing. It's definitely hard work, but hiding behind some [talented] guy on UA-cam confirming your bias and being proud that you've chosen to limit yourself probably isn't the best tack.

    • @michaelbosch1474
      @michaelbosch1474 6 років тому +4

      The rudiments are like the alphabet of the drumming language. If you didn’t know your alphabet, and how to say the letters and combine them to form words, you wouldn’t be able to talk. It’s the same with the rudiments. If you don’t know your drumming alphabet, you can’t really speak through your instrument very well, if at all. How can your passion show in your playing if you can’t communicate it through the drums?

    • @lunamcgrath3266

      most rudiments i find pretty useful, except the stupid ones. Some of the compounds like cheeses and stuff can definetely improve technique though

Anyways I would love to see you tackle another Dream Theater song. None of the new crap haha, something like "Learning to Live". Anyways keep up the good work Harry!

  • @ctromanus

    Disagree on the rudiments piece. If you just want to keep time playing 2, 4 with basic fills and a crash here and there fine, maybe rudiments aren't that important, but I find rudiments provide the hand speed, dexterity and control needed for more interesting grooves. My question to you is what exercise(s) can you recommend to eliminate limb dependance issues? I got it bad, and I want it gone. Thanks, and I'm happy you're back.

    Yeah, fuck the rudiments, when I first started drumming, my instructor was all practice and no fun. He didn't even want to let me on the set before I hammered out rudiments for weeks, so I quit the lessons since I was young and impatient. Now 10 years later I have wrist problems and still don't play with proper technique with my off hand. I agree rudiments aren't everything, but without a solid foundation of technique I feel like I set myself up for a hamstrung drumming experience. These days I do rudiments as a warm-up and then jump on the set and play songs. Just like anything, get the basics down, but don't obsess over them.

      @WallyPeterson 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I've actually been playing for over 30 years (yeah I'm getting old) and am completely self-taught. I knew what a paradiddle was but couldn't do more than one or two in a row at any decent speed. Just started taking things more seriously in the last 6 months (haven't played for the last 3-4 years and just got another set around Christmas) and now I'm finally working on things like rudiments, stick control, how to hold the sticks, and so forth, and I've seen significant improvements. I've always been pretty decent (just have a knack for it) and played in lots of bands over the years, recorded several albums in the nineties, and others have always been very complimentary, but now I really see where I'm deficient and it's nice to finally feel like I'm becoming what I would consider "good" myself.
